Lightroom not importing or recognizing photos

Hi there,
Lightroom is having some serious issues importing photos from my Canon 7D. In the import window, only 2-10 photos will show up with thumbnails, the rest all say "Preview unavailable for this file."
If I select the ones with thumbnails, and say "import,"  a window comes up that says:
" the following files were not imported because they could not be read"
I'm using a Mac OS X Version 10.6.7
Processor 3.06 GHz Intel Core i3
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!
Jill

You need to determine if the CR2 files are ok and LR can’t see them due to file-permission issues or file-system corruption or hardware or driver problems, or if the CR2 files are corrupted and unrecognizable as RAW, the latter being much more serious.
First, you might post a download link for one of the files to the forum so others can examine it, to see if it seems ok or not.  If you don’t have your own large-file-hosting site, then you can use www.YouSendIt.com to upload and send the file to your own e-mail and then post the download link, here.
Many programs that claim to handle RAW files merely know how to extract the camera-embedded preview, which is a JPG, so to test for RAW data corruption you can try Canon’s Digital Photo Professional software that came with your camera.   Open one of the files and see if you use DPP’s File / Convert and Save to export a JPG from the RAW file.  The initial thumbnails in DPP come from the embedded JPG so that won’t tell you too much, but to save as a JPG, DPP will have to make sense of the RAW data.  If DPP cannot Export a JPG from the files, then the files, themselves, are probably corrupted.
If the CR2 files seem ok to DPP then please describe more details of the process you use to import them, initially, on the netbook, and then again on the other computer.  I have an XSi and always use a card-reader and Explorer to copy the files to my external hard-drive then Add (import) from there.  I keep my photos and LR library on an external hard-drive so I can work on them between several computers.
If the files seem ok on one system but not the other it could be a permissions issue, but since you don’t use LR on the netbook something else may be occurring that is more complicated.

My iPhone 4s is not importing my latest photos into iPhoto, though it opens iPhoto as if it were going to do it.  When I plug my iPhone into my iMac, it opens iPhoto, but then it does not import my newest photos.  Any fixes?  This used to work fine.

I have experienced the exact same thing... I figured out a way around it, which seems to work every time. 1. quit iTunes
    2. open iPhoto
    3. unplug the iphone usb cable from the computer
    4. turn your phone on, and unlock it.
    5. plug in the usb cable. after about 10 seconds or so, iPhoto should prompt you with items to import. -p

  • Does not import all JPG photos from local folders

    Hi,
Using Lightroom 5.3 under Windows 7.
Photos are located on local disk.
I received a selection of photos from our research project which I want to import.
Most of the photos have been imported correctly.
However, import of some 500 photos fails.
"synchronize folder" detects the new photos (501)
"synchronize" command reports that "no photos or videos were found to import"
Windows security settings on the files are all the same (inherit from parent folder).
Disk has enough empty space left (56 GB)
The photos are in Jpeg format, typically around 500 to 2000 kB each.
Produced from Photoshop CS5, up to 3267x2244 pixels at 300 dpi.
Photos open correct in other viewers.
    Are the any limitations to
    - folder and file name length?
    - spaces in file names?
    Thanks in advance,
    Roger.

JPGs will not import for one of the following reasons
you have shot JPG+RAW on your camera and the Lightroom option is set only to recognize the RAWs but not the JPGs from the pair
the JPGs have previously been imported into Lightroom, and so Synchronize or Import will not import them a second time (nor is there a good reason to import them a second time).

  • Lightroom not importing all photos from the SD card

I have been using light room for a month now, importing photos from my Nikon's SD Card. All was going well until today. At first it seemed like lightroom could only see the first 144 photos (up to DSC_0217) as that was all that showed in the lightroom Library for last import. But when I looked in the Hard Drive and today's folder I could see all the photos (an additional 70 or so) had been imported to the hard disk. I tried moving the missing ones to a new hard disk folder - then an import from that folder, but light room thinks they are already imported.
Any ideas where they may be? I attach a screen shot - but doubt it will help?!?

LOL - 353 photos, thats the 140 or so from today and all my others. Then I see that the sort order is date stamp, and my missing photos are out of sequence. If I sort by filename then I get what I expected to see ... my new photos at the bottom! Looks like something happened in the EXIF data as the time stamp should be sequential with the the filename! No worries, thanks for making me see the big picture

  • Lightroom not importing photos.  Gray box appears.

I was tethering to Lightroom and suddenly the program failed to import photos.  All that would come up was a gray box.  I tired everything.  I re-started the program, my computer, my camera.  2 days later, and I still cannot get an image to show up in Lightroom.  Any advice?

    Thanks Keith,
I talked to a support person, and it turns out that my cache was the problem.  He re-named it and I am back in business.  Thank you for your help!

  • Lightroom 4 will not import any new photos from Camera or a folder, "could not be read message" or "could not copy to requested location message"

One day everything worked and the next everything except importing new photos worked. What could be the problem? Did a recient Adobe update do this?

These messages usually mean the destination folder does not have WRITE permission. Change your permissions. (It's possible that it stopped working because the destination folder was accidentally changed, in which case you may only need to change the destination folder back to what it was previously)

  • Lightroom not going to next photo after deleting a photo

I would have sworn that for a long time (at first) when I'd delete a photo from disk Lightroom would automatically go to the next photo. That's not the case now. I delete a photo, and then lightroom goes to a black screen that says "no photo selected". If I use the right arrow it goes to the very end of the whole collection (which is problematic when you're going through 3000 photos, and then you try to find where you finished). Otherwise,  you have to find and click on the next photo to display it. This is a pain. Anyone know how to get it to just go to the next photo automatically upon deleting a photo?
    Thanks, Ester

I am deleting it with the Delete button. Then a message pops up saying 'do
you want to permanently delete from disk?' I say "yes" , and it goes to
blank screen saying "no photo selected". I'm not sure a screen shot will
help you since I can't document with keyboard buttons I'm pressing in a
    screen shot...
Any thoughts as to how to get it to go to 'Next photo' instead?
    Thanks, Ester

  • Lightroom not importing all images

I have a folder of 900 small jpegs in a folder on desktop.
Lightroom is only importing 898 of them. I don't have the energy to decipher what 2 are not getting imported. any idea out there? thanks.

How many images do you see in the Import dialog? Any duplicates? Are there any JPEGs which might be imported along with the Raw?

  • Lightroom not "remembering" orientation of photos?

A few days ago I opened a wedding that I was working on and Lightroom started to rotate all my Portrait images back to landscape.  I had already corrected the orientation of the photos days ago.  I was about 2/3 the way through all my images when this happened.  Fortunately all my other adjustments, exposure, cropping, WB etc were kept.
If I open past shoots now, the same thing happens.  Again, all the other data is kept, just the orientation is going back to default.
Is there a chance that I have a corrupt catalog?  Can I load one of my backup catalogs that I did prior to this happening?
    Thanks,
    Brian

I'd first suspect the image Previews being corrupt, especially the file:  Previews.lrdata/thumbnail-cache.db
Try deleting the thumbnail cache, reopen LR, and choose a folder to rebuild previews, to check if that's it.

  • Not importing titles with photos

My wife recieves numerous emails with photos and imports them to iPhoto 9.1.5.  The preferences are selected to import the titles but the pictures come in with generic titles only.  When checking the mail download folder the titles are displayed correctly.

If you drag the photo from the email to the Desktop what is the file name that displays? If it's the title you want then import from there and see if it is kept.

  • Lightroom not importing from DXO Optics 9.5

I want to occasionally use DXO Optics for some lighting affects, artistic affects and noise reduction.
Watching videos and reading about the process I should be able to select export to DXO from LR, do some work in DXO then export back into LR.
The first step sort of works but doesn't auto load into the Customize window of DXO (all the videos show this as the starting point for DXO). It does start a Project called Lightroom(n) though.
The last step, export to Lightroom doesn't work. After the image is processed and saved LR is automatically brought to the front of my desktop but no import occurs. I have to synchronise the folder.
    Has anyone else tried this?
    What am I doing wrong?

  • Lightroom 5 and location of photos

    Hi everyone.....
I plan on buying Lightroom 5.  I have never used Lightroom before.
I have limited space on my primary C: drive. However, I have 3 other drives in my computer where I keep my photos.
When I install Lightroom and attempt to organize the photos will Lightroom wither copy or move the photos onto my primart C: drive where Lightroom would be installed. I rather it wouldn't as I have limited space on the C; drive and the photos would soon fill up my C; drive. I would like to keep my photos on the other drives in my computer. Can this be done?
    thank you

When you import the images, Lightroom does not import the actual photo into the catalog, it generates thumbnails, and leaves the images on disk untouched.  Afterwords, if you manipulate the photos under the "Folders" section, then it will move, or delete, or edit photos on disk.  This feature is one of the main reasons I switched from iPhoto and Aperture to Lightroom 5.

  • Lightroom will not import my photos.   It did up to a week ago.   I have changed cards and cameras (both worked two weeks ago).   I can import the photos to Picasa and iPhoto

Lightroom will not import my photos.   It did up to a week ago.   I have changed cards and cameras (both worked two weeks ago).   I can import the photos to Picasa and iPhoto.   I get the following error message:
Some import operations were not performed.
The following files were not imported because they could not be read  [followed by a list of the files I wanted to import]
Thumbnails show up.  LR just will not import them.
Any idea what is going wrong?

If the Import button is not clickable, that means that Lightroom thinks you have no new photos to import (one possible reason is that they are duplicates)
So, you need to figure out why Lightroom thinks that. The way I would do this is to search your Library module for at least one of the photos, by file name. To do this, you would follow all 4 of these steps in sequence:
Click on All Photographs in the Catalog Panel on the left of the Library Module
Turn off all Filters (Ctrl-L or Cmd-L once or twice)
Expand all stacks: Photo->Stacking->Expand All Stacks
Search for one or more of the photos using the Filter Bar (press backslash), search by File Name

  • I can not import photos into lightroom 4.4  Had no problem before this time.

I can not import photos into lightroom 4.4  Had no problem before this time.  I have camera raw7.4 and use a NikonD7100.  I have a Mac using 10.6.8.  I can see the images and selected for import in Lightroom, but after I check "import" I get a message that Lightroom could not read the files.  This happens with both raw and jpeg files.  Thanks for a repl

thanks for the reply. would you please tell me how to check for the folder to have write permission.  I have done the same settings as before but this time does not transfer.  It says can not read files with a code "298".  I can see the thumbnails on the screen prior to trying to import the photos, also can see them with the card in the camera and using the view mode.  I have up to date camera raw 7.4 for my Nikon D7100 and the settings allow for 7.1 and above
