Lightroom OEM vs Off the Shelf

I purchased Lightroom 5 from an Amazon vender. The case is labeled, "FOR OEM BUNDLING ONLY" and "For bundling with computers, digital cameras, scanners, and inkjet printers only. Not to be sold separately." My question is: Does this disc contain the same full version of Lr5 that I would get if I bought it off the shelf at a computer or electronics store?

yes - the software is the same (and is complete). granted you won't get all the same "trimmings" (documentation, packaging, ... ) along with it.

  • Can I buy an upgraded 13" MBA right off the shelf?

Hi, this will be my first time to buy a macbook that's why I'm not sure how it really goes. I am planning to buy a 13" MBA with Core i7 and 8GB RAM upgrades when I go to Hongkong this March. Can I buy it off the shelf? or do I need to order it first and have to wait for few days?
Hope to get our response. Thank you!

short answer - you will have to customise it online
they sometimes have popular upgraded models in stock but less common configurations are usually online only. with the model you said i would say theres a slim chance of getting one off the shelf. it would also depend on the store (e.g. the big one in new york probably has all models in stock whereas some small store in a shopping center in texas somewhere probably only has a couple)
one more thing - if you researched it already then just ignore this but i'm not sure if you can do the order & collect in hong kong or if its for US only, apple like to give the yanks lots of nice treatment then taunt the rest of us with them

  • Off-the-shelf products that can access DNG's XMP?

I'm sorry if this is off-topic.
I'm a photographer who uses DNG as my raw file format, and puts various things, (name, copyright statement, website, keywords, etc), into the DNGs, in the form of XMP. (Using Bridge + ACR). Then this XMP eventually gets into the PSDs, JPEGs, etc.
I do so on the assumption that in future I will be able to get off-the-shelf tools that will do something useful with this. Asset managers, etc. Or perhaps tools that will add to it - for example, adding GPS log data. Etc.
But this assumes that embedded XMP will be accepted as something that (non-Adobe) off-the-shelf tools will handle, perhaps routinely. I simply don't have a feel for whether that is the way the industry is going, or whether it will be concentrated in niche and specialised and bespoke tools. I would appreciate information of "routine" take-up.
    Thanks.
(PLEASE don't give me a sales-pitch for XMP! I'm beyond the need for that).

Thanks, johnbeardy. (And thanks for your recent suggestions, you know where, for classifying support for DNG, and even XMP).
I am building up a picture here that the key to a sustainable DNG-based workflow isn't simply to have lots of tools, (by that I include "full blown applications"), that support DNG in some form. It is to have tools that can also exploit, in & out, the XMP metadata within the DNGs.
The vision I am getting of the desirable future of raw shooting has DNG at the centre, as a container for the raw image, a lot of XMP metadata of various sorts, plus some other stuff. It isn't a product-centred vision, it is a DNG-containing-XMP centred vision.
I suspect that this will be a hard vision to explain to others! You, and AlaskaBob, and Peter Krogh, and some, (probably not all), people in Adobe, won't have a problem - in fact, I'm a bit late on the scene. But there are very many people who can't even see the strategic advantages of DNG, let alone DNG-containing-XMP!
    Very illuminating! Thanks.

  • Off-the-shelf graphics cards... any luck with Lion?

I've been hearing online ramblings about Lion being compatible with some off-the-shelf graphics cards and Wikipedia says the Radeon 6XXX HD cards are compatible, but has anybody tried any cards that aren't clearly labeled as Mac compatible?  I know, I know, only the "Made for Mac" cards are supposed to work but I'm hearing too much online to be satisfied with that response at this point.
The GT 120 is just tired and I want the power of the 5870, but $400+ feels unfair.  I know it's only been out for a day, but I'm already itching to hear if anybody has tried anything new with Lion.

Tried a XFX HD 4670 Radeon. Once booted everything works fine. Here are my findings:
No boot up screen (therefore ability to change start up drive) expected based on other discussions
The card seems to think that I have a second monitor connected - and I was not able to find a way to make it think otherwise.
Overall the card was speedy and boosted my xbench and geekbench scores - but for now I am back to my GT120..

  • Best $3K off the shelf system for CS5??

    for us newbies...what
would be the Best $3K off the shelf system for CS5??
    thx

    ok...dell and hp steal
you blind on necessary upgrades...is the customer support and "security" offered by
them a good enough trade off with the "build it yourself/have it custom built" danger of not knowing what to do if/when things go wrong?
i am just looking to do low level (but high quality) professionasl stuff...i.e. budget weddings/training/memorials/recitals etc. and feel i am not far enough along on the high tech learning curve...but moving as fast as i can.
ALSO...and maybe this is another conversation...but:
is the miniDV tape (for SD and HDV) about over now and are we comletely into the "tapeless" video era?
    thanks for all your help.

  • How to manage NOT off the shelf applications

How do I manage applications that are large and not "off the shelf"
For example I want to be able to look at my ERP and CRM systems and see which servers it is installed on, who supports it, when the contract is due etc. I will have a Development, QA and Production environment for each system.  Can this be accomplished
with system center?  Or is there a plug in that will provide this level of functionality.  In the past I have seen products that allow a parent to be set up that encapsulates all of the files for such an application.
    Thanks,
    Martin

If you want to report something, you first need to get that information somehow stored on to those servers so that ConfigMgr can read it. ConfigMgr isn't out of the box solution for everything, it always needs some configuration to get the desired results.
If those applications you mentioned populate some information into the windows registry or WMI, it can be collected with ConfigMgr. If not, you have to create a custom method to do so (script).
Here's a tool that can convert registry keys into WMI and after that the information can be collected with ConfigMgr:

Here's an example of populating WMI with custom information and collect it with ConfigMgr:

  • Off the shelf Flash chart with live update and slider?

Does anyone know of any good off the shelf Flash line chart
    that has
    1. Live AJAX-type update of data (without reloading entire
    Flash chart)
    2. Horizontal axis slider to be able to zoom in (like the
    time slider on Google Finance)
    I have been using
    XML/SWF
chart chart but find that its live update is clunky.
Is doing a custom chart our best bet?

    Hi,
it was a bug, corrected in patch 4.0.1 (bug 9868860), see http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/developer-tools/apex/application-express/401-patch-166923.html#BABJCAFA.
It's why it don't works with APEX 4.0.0.

  • Off the shelf portable-ish computer?

Hi there, I'm looking to purchase an off the shelf, somewhat portable computer to run flash media live encoder for some webcasts.  I will probably be using the black magic or osprey capture card.  I figured the i7 chips are enough power, but I cannot tell which of the computers have a direct line of access to the processor from the PCIe slot.  Perhaps I am asking for too much out of a small form factor computer and I'll need to get a desktop, but just wanted to see if anyone out there is using something like this.  I will need to buy two of these machines so that I have a backup.
Also if anyone has a laptop solution with a capture card that accepts HD-SDI, i'm all ears to that as well. Thanks for your help everyone.  I appreciate it.

To add to my comment above, I just tested the new Dell Precision M4600  (2.3GHz Sandybridge quad i7-2827QM) laptop with the Blackmagic Intensity Shuttle USB 3.0 device and seems to work great.  I tested with the Kulabyte encoder and Blackmagic 8.x drivers, but since FMLE also seems to support the Blackmagic drivers I suspect it will work as well.
The Intensity Shuttle is USB powered and has HDMI, Composite, and Component (HD) inputs.  Blackmagic also has the UltraStudio SDI which is a USB 3.0 SDI capture device and is USB powered and they have the UltraStudio Pro which is like the Intensity+SDI, but this one is line powered.
This laptop also has Firewire and an ExpressCard slot so you can use Firewire capture devices, PCI capture devices like Blackmagic in an expansion box, or USB 3.0 capture devices.

  • Is there any off the shelf credit card enryption/decrption tool available ?

Since, Credit Card (CC) processing is very critical , my company is looking for options which are available in the market -ready to use !!!
Is there any off the shelf credit card enryption/decrption tool available ?

    What is "credit card encryption/decryption"?
    1) Are you willing to encrypt and decrypt credit card numbers in a safe way, to store them in a database?
    - JCE and crypto
    2) Are you willing to communicate with the credit card companies to perform credit card transactions in a safe way?
    - Contact them; there are third-party companies that sell solutions for communicating with Visa, Mastercard etc; the credit card company can tell you what company they recommend
    3) Are you trying to validate the credit card numbers (no online processing needed, just validate the card numbers in Javascript)
    - search for Luhn's algorithm

  • Merge operation in Lightroom cc turn off the active filter

Merge to HDR / Panorama turn off the active filter in LR

Yes, this is to prevent confusion when the merge result falls outside of the active filter and is thus hidden from the user.  Sometimes it will, sometimes it won't - so we chose consistency of behavior.
You should be able to prevent this by clicking the padlock icon in the upper right of the grid view and filter area. This will lock the filter.

  • Upgraded MacBook or off-the-shelf MacBook Retina?

    Hi everyone,
I'm about to replace my 6-years-old MacBook White (Early 2008) with a laptop. I'm hesitating between two options:
    1. 13'' MacBook Retina, i5 2,4 GHz, upgraded to 256 SSD and 16GB RAM, 1590€*
    2. 13'' MacBook non-Retina, i7 2,9GHz, which I'd upgrade myself replacing SuperDrive with a 120GB SSD (Mercury EXTREME Pro 6G) and getting 16GB RAM. The total cost (incl. tools and postage for SSD+RAM) should amount to 1614€*.
    * Prices for Belgium, including a 8% discount that my company gets with every Apple purchase. Unfortunately I'm not able to purchase a laptop from any other country
    in favor of non-Retina:
    - faster processor & SSD
    - 2.4x bigger hard drive
    - Ethernet port (no adapter needed)
    - repairable (= longer lifetime?)
    in favor of Retina:
    - great screen
    - faster Wi-Fi
    - better graphics
    - better battery life (7 instead of 9 hours)
    - Thunderbolt 2
I'll be using my laptop browsing the Web, text editing, almost always having multiple tabs and apps open. I'll occasionally be doing some photo editing (Adobe Lightroom). No gaming, no video editing.
Now, I'm honestly stuck here. Non-Retina seems like a faster and more durable machine (but is it, actually?). Retina is obviously tempting because of its screen and the ease of not having to change the RAM and SSD myself.
What are your thoughts on this? Any help would be appretiated...

    kakkerpolakker,
between these two MacBook Pros, the Geekbench 2 benchmark rates the non-Retina model at an average of 10% faster than the Retina model. I don’t know whether the non-Retina one is more durable or not, but it will certainly be easier to repair, since its RAM is socketed rather than soldered, its battery is screwed in rather than glued in, and upgrades for its industry-standard SATA drives are much easier to find than PCIe SSDs in the Retina model would be. If you’re not heavily invested in Thunderbolt hardware yet, then in my opinion the difference between Thunderbolt 1 and Thunderbolt 2 would not be an important differentiator between them, particularly since you’re apparently not planning on doing tasks that would require intensive throughput. The Retina model’s faster wi-fi would require the availability of a router that supports 802.11ac to take advantage of it.
My preference would be for the non-Retina model, mainly because I dislike the reduced user-repairability of the Retina models; but of course that might not be as important a feature for you as it would be for me.

  • When I try to make a time lapse in lightroom it cuts off the end of the video

In Lightroom 5, (It came with Photoshop Creative Cloud), I upload a series of photos, edit them together, then select slideshow and a Template Bowers - User Template - 23.97fps Time-lapse, downloaded from, https://www.youtube.com/redirect?q=http%3A%2F%2Flightroom-blog.com%2Fpresets%2Flrtimelapse .zip&redir_token=U79NuJdMuv4axu4RigPjzH5hxpd8MTQxNzI1NjExM0AxNDE3MTY5NzEz
I then export the video it processes like normal. BUT when I watch it back it misses out the end of videos. I am an  A-Level Student and I need to use this for my course, please Help.
    Alex O'Sullivan

If you have creative cloud, there is a far better way to make a time-lapse using Photoshop. The Lightroom way works but is a very slow kludge that creates files that you have to recompress to make them work. I would only use this if you don't have Photoshop or quicktime Pro. Here is the first link that shows up when I google "creating timelapse with photoshop": http://photofocus.com/2014/02/06/assembling-a-time-lapse-video-in-adobe-photoshop/

  • Help with Off the Shelf Computer for CS5

Greetings, I am an amateur wildlife videographer. I currently edit HD footage (both tape and card) using CS4, but will be upgrading to CS5 after I get a new computer for it. I have just started to look and have some questions!  I am looking at HP's HPE390t (WIn7 Ult 64bit) Intel Corei7 960X six core Extreme Edition (3.33GHz, 1.5 MB L2 + 12 12MB shared L3 cache Memory 24GB DDR3 HD 2TB Raid 0.  Now comes the question which Nvidia graphics card  should I consider? I am looking at GeForce FTX 285 or better, also considering Quadro FX 3800. Any help is appreciated! Thank You Jean matusik

  • How well does Final Cut Pro X run on an off-the-shelf 21.5" iMac?

I'm looking at purchasing an iMac for video editing projects but my budget is very limited. How well does a plain-jane iMac 21.5" (SATA 5400 RPM Drive, Iris Pro Graphics, 8 GB RAM) run FCPX?
Currently at my office I'm running FCPX on a Mid-2010 model with the 3.06 Core i3, 4GB of RAM and a Radeon HD 4670 256 MB. It is more than adequate for my needs in both FCPX and Motion 5. Will the current base model compare favorably to the one I'm already using?

    Ian R. Brown wrote:
Most of the drives in MacBookPros were only 5,400rpm and I don't recollect them causing any problems with editing.
Yup, depends on simplicity and what you can "get away with".

  • Off the shelf XY gantry system controlled with LabView

I am looking for an XY gantry system that I can easily control from labview.  I need a workspace of 11 by 16 inches with minimum clearance of 6 inches.  I was wondering if anyone has used a commercially available XY gantry or has any experience with an XY gantry.
I have found these two tables/brands that already have LabView drivers
    http://www.zaber.com/products/product_detail.php?detail=G-LSQ450D450D&tab=Series%20Features#tabs
    http://www.techno-isel.com/tic/Catdas/Gantry3.htm
And this one that looks promising too
    http://www.animatics.com/en/products/table-top-robot/animatics/table-top-robot/2-axis-ttr-xy-configu...
Both Zaber and Techno Linear do not know of anyone in my area (Loveland, Colorado or Denver area) that I could go visit to see a table and I would like to see a working system before making a decision to buy a new system. I have not been able to talk to an engineer/technical sale representative at Animatics yet.
I am looking at using the XY gantry to position a sensor over a tray of parts to measure some properties of the parts.  The system I am designing does not need an high accuracy table (+- 0.005" is fine).  I would prefer to spend about $10K for a XY gantry table including any required controllers and hardware.
    Thanks,
    Brian

You have a good start, but 2 other things that you need to consider are your load and speeds required.  This will determine the mechanics of the gantry(ball screw, acme screw, belt, bearing type, etc.).  It will also determine if you need servos or you can get away with steppers.  You then need to figure what kind of motion you need.  Point to point moves can be accomplished with non-interpolated controllers, but any kind of coordinated motion will need a motion controller that can do true interpolated motion.
