Lightroom on a Mac and PC?

I've been evaluating Lightroom on my Windows XP PC.  I've been using too many tools to process and index my Nikon NEF files.  I like what I see from Lightorrom.
I'm in the market for a notebook to take on the road with me for jobs.  I'm stuck between deciding between a Mac or a PC notebook.  My budget is about the price of the 13" MacBook around $1300.  My questions is the following.  If I move to a Mac and keep my PC at home, can I easily sync the databases between the two operating systems?
the other side to this is, my wife has a 24" iMac, that I could swap my PC with, so that would fix that issue, but that means a lot of formatting of computers to get them nice and clean.
My last question is, How many copies am i allowed to install?  Do I need a license for my notebook and PC, even though only one would ever be used?
Thanks in advance.

The format of the catalogs is exactly the same, so there is no real difference between syncing two databases whether you do the same platform or mixed platforms. You do have to think about how you would sync though. There are several methods and they all have their advantages and disadvantages.

When I last read it, the license allowed you to install on two machines as long as you are the user, so you should be fine.

  • Can I use Lightroom on my mac and my pc at the same time with only one subscription?

    Hello everyone,
for five months now I have a Creative Cloud subscription for Lightroom and Photoshop. Till now I was just using it on my PC. Now I've bought me a MAC and would like to install Lightroom on the MAC either. Do I need a second subscription for MAC or can I use my subscription on the MAC and PC simultaneously?
    thx for feedback

If you are asking if you can be running the subscription software on the two machines at the same time, the answer to that is no.  Per your license you can only be using one of the installations at a given time.
If you are asking if you can have the software installed and capable of being used on both machines then the answer is yes... you just cannot have both machines in use  running the subscription software at the same time.

  • Using/Syncing Lightroom 2 with Mac and PC

I'm using Lightroom on a couple of machines. My main desktop is a Mac and a Mac laptop while on shoots. I have a partner in the office that works on a PC to work with clients, is there a way to sync the Lightroom catalog between machines, like between the Mac and the PC if they're on the same network?

I too am having difficulties with this. I used to have a PC desktop & laptop, and used sync products such as Microsoft Live Mesh and/or Foldershare to sync the catalog between my two machines.
I have recently replaced my laptop with a MacBook, and now have problems with synced catalogs. On my MacBook, it shows that it cannot find the picture files imported on my PC, and my PC cannot find picture files imported on my MacBook. Its ultimately due to the pathname associated with the picture (i.e. a MacBook does not have a C:\... in the path).
Is there any solution to this to allow the PC & Mac catalogs to sync between machines seamlessly?

  • Adobe Lightroom 4 for Mac and Windows, can I install the same license on both systems or only 1?

I just purchased 1 full license of Adobe Lightroom 4 and I can see there's an installer for Mac and Windows.
does it mean I can install on both systems or my license is only valid for 1?

  • Lightroom 4 on MAC and Photoshop on Creative Cloud?

    Hi,
I've purchased a copy of Lightroom 4 and it is installed locally on my mac and I'm looking at subscribing to photoshop via the creative cloud service. I don't to subscribe to the whole suite.
Is the integration between the locally installed product and photoshop in the cloud the same as the integration between two locally installed products?
For example can I still select two photos in lightroom and select merge to panorama in photoshop or do I need to have the creative cloud version of lightroom as well?
    Thanks!

Adobe Cloud apps are locally installed (other than the web based services).
The difference between Cloud and perpetual licenses is the licensing mechanism.
Adobe ID for Cloud (Photoshop's Cloud activation mechansim calls home via the internet each month to check your membership is current) and serial number for perpetually licensed apps.
The code in the perpetually licensed and Cloud software (both installed on your local machine) operates identically regardless of how you've bought the software.

    Yes.

  • Lightroom 2 for Mac and OS X Spaces

    Hi,
I have a problem with Lightroom 2 and OS X Spaces:
After starting Lightroom I navigate to another virtusl desktop (OS X Space).
When I want to go back to Lightroom I would normally use Command-Tab or click the Lightroom Icon in the Dock. The Lightroom menu is displayed, but I am not automatically switched back to the desktop (Space) where Lightroom is running - as I would be with any other Mac application I know. I have to switch desktop manually.
    Anyone else see this?
    Any fix possible?
    Best regards,
    Jeppe

I think there is another thread about this problem. I notice it too. However, CTRL - # does work to switch you back and forth within the different spaces and that's what I'm now doing. I also make sure and run Photoshop and any other related software tools within the same SPACES space that LR is running. I run LR in Space #2. So CTRL-2 quickly switches me back to LR from any other application. CMD-TAB however will not switch me back to the proper SPACE where LR is running unless I'm already there.
How LR manages to break this nice feature within the Apple OS, I've no clue. But, broken, it is.

  • Can I use both Lightroom for a Mac and PC to do the same project?

Yes, as long as you have a drive that both Mac & Windows can read...LR serials are platform agnostic...

  • Lightroom installed on Mac, developer module disabled.

Hi, I have been using the trial copy of Lightroom (on my Mac) and yesterday (Tuesday) I purchased the download from Amazon and it installed perfectly.  The only problem is that the Develop module and the Map modules are showing '...module is disabled.  Please renew your membership to reactivate'.
I have followed the instructions on the help page referring to the SLStore and SLCache folders but those folders are not showing in my Finder.  Can anyone advise please?

If you have the serial number from Amazon, you could probably just uninstall the version that you have and download the trial version from Adobe and install it. Then you could activate that with your serial number.

  • Lightroom Catalogue external drive to be accessed by Mac and PC

I have Mac 10.9.1 OS and Windows 7. I have Lightroom 5 Calatogue on external firewire drive currently running from the Mac. I want to open the catalogue from my Windows 7 Lightroom 5. I can open the catalogue, but cannot see the file structure in the left pane.
Should I reformat the drive to be compatible with both platforms (after backing up of course)? What format options should I select? Is this done on the Mac or PC? Am I likely to run into any problems?
For the last few years I ran the catalogue from the PC and Mac using a firewire external drive, but this has been replaced by a smaller physical drive which is better for my travels. I used Windows XP in those days and Snow Leopard.
    Thanks in advance. Gary Wornell

It is surprising to me that you were able to get this far. If the drive is formated in HFS+ then you would not be able to view the files on the drive from Windows.
Should I reformat the drive to be compatible with both platforms (after backing up of course)? What format options should I select? Is this done on the Mac or PC? Am I likely to run into any problems?
Yes this is most likely the problem and the fix. Use Disk Utility on the Mac to confirm that the drive is currently formated with HFS+ which would be why it doesn't work in Windows.
When reformatting you should use FAT or exFAT, either one will work. You can format the drive from Windows or Mac as both OSes can do it.
If you want to avoid the headache of reformating you can do what johnbeardy said and purchase 3rd party software to add HFS+ support to Windows. Your options are Paragon or MacDrive. Normally I would be wary of this since file systems are something important that you don't want to use unreliable software for but Paragon and MacDrive both look reputable.
Am I likely to run into any problems?
I would be slightly concerned about sharing a Lightroom catalog between Windows and Mac. Hopefully Adobe does not do anything stupid to introduce incompabilities between the two platforms. Make sure to keep the version numbers of Lightroom close on the two machines.

  • Lightroom on a PC and Mac

Does the licensing allow you to do one install on a PC and another install on a Mac? I thought it was supposed to be dual platform, but just got off the phone with Adobe and was told that while the disk will install on either platform, you have to choose one licensing, so you can't have it installed on the 2 different operating systems.
Is this true? If I were to migrate to a Mac, I couldn't have Ligtroom installed on the MAc and a second install on a PC laptop?

From the LR FAQ at http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshoplightroom/productinfo/faq/
    >How many computers are covered by a single license of Photoshop Lightroom 1.1?
    > Subject to the terms of the End User Licensing Agreement, the primary user of the computer on which Photohop Lightroom (the Software) is installed may install a second copy of the Software for his or her exclusive use on either a portable computer or a computer located at his or her home, provided that the Software on the portable or home computer is not used at the same time as the Software on the primary computer. You may be required to contact Adobe in order to make a second copy. Photoshop Lightroom is sold as multi-platform software, which means it can be installed on either Mac OS X or Windows.
Which in this Forum has been always taken to mean that you can have one PC and one Mac version, the same serial number will work on both. In fact you can switch from two PCs to two Macs (if you are so inclined) with the same Serial number.

  • Lightroom with HP smartmedia server - mac and pc

    Hi Everyone,
I was considering buying a new HP Smartmedia Home Server, but before I did I wanted to make sure I could store my pics and catolog files on the server to be accessed by my mac and PC.
My wife uses my PC to put her photos into lightroom and I use my mac.  I like to be able to merge them into a catalog on the media server so we can both access and edit the pics.
Does anyone have some experience with this server or the previous releases?  There is apparently much better mac support now.
    Thanks,
    Rob.

HP's Homeservers are great for lots of things but not for what you want to do.  Catalogs still need to reside on the individual machines.  In addition, although your images can be stored on the server, you may find accessing them through Lightroom painfully slow.  Even the more current HP Homeservers are seriously underspec'd as far as performance goes.
I am not suggesting that you should avoid a HP Homeserver - I have last year's model, and it is a great solution for backups, home media storage/shared access, remote web access to files, sharing images on the web, and hosting a personal website (if your ISP allows it). Personally, the backup/restore capabilities alone have made it a worthwhile investment.  It, however, is not really Lightroom friendly for what you want to do.
