Lightroom on a netbook

Hi
I know it would be slow, but is it at all feasible to run Lightroom on a netbook with a 1.66 ghz processor with 1 gb of RAM and 250 gig hard drive?
Andrew

I have a Dell Mini running Win XP.  I have a post on this forum about how to make it work just fine.
Here's the brief steps.
1.  Right click the desktop .
2.  select Properties.
3.  Click Settings.
4.  Click Advanced
5.  Click Monitor.
6.  Uncheck "Hide modes that this monitor csan't display.:
7.  Return to "settings."
8.  Set  Screen Resolution to 1024 by 768
9.  Accept all and return to desktop.
Now you can get to all functions in all programs by scrolling up and down -- a little slow, but it works fine.
My Dell Mini even accepts xRite Eye One software and the monitor is calibrated -- not as good as my 24" Dell computer, but  dammed good.
It  runs LR 3 Beta 2 just fine.  I hace not updated the LR software yet.
I have my catalog and images on an external hard drive so each comnputer can run LR with no sync problems at all.  There is no probflem about merging the mini  catalog with my main computer catalog -- it is the same catalog.s
It is a great solution for field work.
Good Luck,
Wil

  • Lightroom using only one core?

I am new to Lightroom, and a very ametuer photographer. I'm running 3.4.1 on a Win7 machine. I'm discovering that it is a very resource intensive program, and realizing that I may need to upgrade my computer to even utilize it. Before I do that though, I'm trying to figure out why Lightroom only seems to be accessing one processor on a dual-core machine. After I've had Lightroom open for a bit, when I click into a folder to view the photos in it, even when there are only 3 photos in the folder, it is taking up to 20 minutes to load the thumbnails. When I open task manager, one CPU is running at nearly 100% and the other one is barely being used. Lightroom basically shows up at 50% (though sometimes up to 53%). Any idea why this would be the case?
I've got a fairly small catalog (less than 10,000 photos) and I've got plenty of room on my hard drive. I may need more memory, but considering nothing else is running, Lightroom shouldn't be that desperate for space. I want to confirm that the 64bit version was installed, but I can't seem to find a way to confirm that.
    Thanks for any thoughts.

I'd suggest a tool like Spotlight On Windows (it's free) that will show what's going on in your computer at a fairly detailed level with simple graphics.
    http://www.quest.com/spotlight-on-windows/
And to look at the process in detail. Microsoft's Process Explorer (procexp.exe) from the SysInternals tools.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653
Memory is certainly the first suspect, but I'm running fine on a machine with only 2G of RAM.
Over 248000 photos in my catalog, and the database is on a local disk while the images and XMP files are on a NAS.
My CPU is a quad core 2.5GHz Xeon, max cpu use is 44% and I get the grid of all images ever first page display in 20 seconds.
However I am using Windows XP and I suspect that Windows 7 might be struggling on your PC.
I daren't upgrade my machine to Win 7 because it works with XP - ain't broke, won't fix it
I did try quickly a 5000 image catalog on my netbook with 2G RAM and it was slow, but then the whole netbook is slow with Win7 and 2G whatever I do with it
By slow I mean about 2 minutes to load the initial grid view of all my images taken in 2011.

  • Camera Raw on a Netbook

Don't know if this should be on the feature request forum or here in the general discussion?
However as it would not be a 'feature' more a stand alone application then this might be the best place -
With the rise of the use of Netbooks, running bare bones applications, would it be possible to have Camera Raw as a stand alone application?
So that event/press/holiday photographers could have a workable system - most netbooks come with 160gig hard drives, plenty of space for a days work, all that is needed is some picture editing software which works (GIMP and Picassa are not in the ball park unfortunately) FTP and Emailing software already exists. ITPC captioning software already exists. Bridge is still slow in comparison to PhotoMechanic.
Lightroom needs a higher screen resolution than is available on most Netbooks 1024x600. It also does a LOT of stuff that just isn't needed when you are out on the road.
I am well aware of the limitations of using a small screen, with limited colour profiling capabilities, the slowness of the Atom chip etc. however the needs of the 'Road Warrior' are well met by Netbooks due to their size and long battery life, existing software other than a working image editor.
Of course it would not be a massive market, however it would be a premier one and I suspect a new one, as the people buying 'Camera Raw LIte'!! would of course have either LR or PS one their full sized systems, 'CRL' would do one thing and one thing well and fast with minimum resources.
There are people who do use CS 4 on Netbooks and they say that is runs ok, however if there was a 'bare bones' application which did one thing and did it well and at speed, then there is, I'm sure a definate market. It could even be a testing ground for an iPhone application - you may laugh but PhoJo is used on an iPaq handheld. http://www.idruna.com/pocketphojo.html
If any of the Camera Raw team wish to contact me off list, I would be happy to talk through a few ideas.

    Any thoughts Eric or Thomas?
    Is it possible?
I'm pretty sure that there is a market, I know that the photographers working in London are seriously looking for a 'better' solution than FULL Photoshop.
Whilst it is workable, there is certainly a speed hit, I would assume due to the way PS is written and it's 'expected' use against a Netbook running an Atom chip - a couple of years ago 1.6 GHz was a pretty respectable chip speed and PS just flew along.
The netbook is the fastest selling category of computer and it's market continues to grow - out of that market I would imagine that there are a sizeable number of people who would like a 'simple' photo editing program optimised for a simpler workflow. In addition to news, wedding and event photographers out there, there must be 'millions' of amatuer photographers who go on holiday who want a photo editing system  which would work on a netbook.
    Thanks for any feedback

  • Lightroom won't recognize directories or import RAW

i am unable to import RAW photographs that are already on an external drive, imported by another program via a netbook in the field. Gives no error message, just won't recognize the directories. Will recognize JPEG though. Taken with a Canon xsi. Lightroom is on an HP laptop with plenty of oomph. Have been using Lightroom v. 3.4.1 with no prior problems for thousands of photos, now all of a sudden...????
just completed installation of LR v. 3.5 and same issue: unresolved.
any help would be MUCH appreciated!

the external drive is an WD Elements that connects via USB. The directories are fine on the drive. The raw photos show as .cr2, but without a thumbnail. I'm not sure if the other program changes the file names... No -- they don't appear to be any different than the ones LR imports fromt the card...
apologies: the directories that lightroom will not recognize also contain jpegs that don't come up either. Sorry!
    thanks ;-)

  • Lightroom license question

Just purchased Lightroon 5.3 for my primary computer (Win7, 64-bit) and also want to install on my 32-bit WinXP portable netbook, which I understand is permitted by the license agreement.  However, I don't believe my netbook will handle 5.3.
Have downloaded 3.6 trial version from Adobe onto my netbook and have asked Support how I might register that version, but they informed me that Lightroom 3.6 was not available (??) and were otherwise uninformative.
Does anyone know how I might legitimately use 3.6 on my netbook using the license for Lightroon 5.3?
    thanks in advance,

Correct. Lightroom 5 will not run on Windows XP.

    What Geoff said.
You cannot use your LR5 serial number to license a lower version of LR (LR3 or LR4) on your Netbook. LR5 serial numbers only work with LR5.x.
Unfortunately, to use Lightroom on a second device, you'll have to upgrade your Netbook to Win 7 or replace the Netbook.

  • 11" MBA and LightRoom 3

Would a maxed out 11" MBA run LR3?
I am looking for a small portable machine to download images from a CF card so they can be transferred to external drives. Additionally, I'd like a machine that can do quick, minor photo edits with LightRoom 3 while on the road.
Either of the MBA's should run e-mail and allow you to surf the Net.
    Thanks,

    Still not recomend 11" MBA?
I think the screen size and your tolerance of it is going to vary between individuals. For example, my wife who uses a 13" MacBook as her primary computer and hardly ever connects it to a monitor (and who has better eye sight than me) absolutely loves the 11" MBA. She has zero problems zipping around applications and screens, it's second nature.
My co-worker who sits in front of a 30" Apple Cinema Display at some ridiculous resolution couldn't stand the computer after about 30 minutes of usage. I suspect some of that frustration was the smaller keyboard, he felt a bit more comfortable with an external keyboard but the angle of viewing (he's a tall guy) was uncomfortable after about 15 minutes.
I agree the portability of the 11" is very attractive, it's like carrying around a little notebook only it's an actual computer. I suspect, however, that there might be a flood of "gently used" 11" MBAs on eBay in 3-6 weeks though from people who have grown uncomfortable with the smaller size and thought they could maybe use the machine for more than it was capable of or require the larger screen.
Recommending a machine is a tricky proposition, what's good for me might be horrible for you. For example, I lugged around a 17" MacBook Pro through Manhattan on a computer rail for 2+ years and never once did it bother me. Yet there are some people that think the 15" MBP is bulky to carry between meetings in the same building.
I really think, given the nature of the 11" that it's one of those computers that you really need to spend some time with to see if it's right for you. I remember when I got my first netbook (on a whim, wanted to see what the hype was about). I had it returned within 24 hours, I hated the keyboard and screen size.

  • Lightroom not importing or recognizing photos

    Hi there,
Lightroom is having some serious issues importing photos from my Canon 7D. In the import window, only 2-10 photos will show up with thumbnails, the rest all say "Preview unavailable for this file."
If I select the ones with thumbnails, and say "import,"  a window comes up that says:
" the following files were not imported because they could not be read"
    I'm using a Mac OS X Version 10.6.7
Processor 3.06 GHz Intel Core i3
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!
    Jill

You need to determine if the CR2 files are ok and LR can’t see them due to file-permission issues or file-system corruption or hardware or driver problems, or if the CR2 files are corrupted and unrecognizable as RAW, the latter being much more serious.
First, you might post a download link for one of the files to the forum so others can examine it, to see if it seems ok or not.  If you don’t have your own large-file-hosting site, then you can use www.YouSendIt.com to upload and send the file to your own e-mail and then post the download link, here.
Many programs that claim to handle RAW files merely know how to extract the camera-embedded preview, which is a JPG, so to test for RAW data corruption you can try Canon’s Digital Photo Professional software that came with your camera.   Open one of the files and see if you use DPP’s File / Convert and Save to export a JPG from the RAW file.  The initial thumbnails in DPP come from the embedded JPG so that won’t tell you too much, but to save as a JPG, DPP will have to make sense of the RAW data.  If DPP cannot Export a JPG from the files, then the files, themselves, are probably corrupted.
If the CR2 files seem ok to DPP then please describe more details of the process you use to import them, initially, on the netbook, and then again on the other computer.  I have an XSi and always use a card-reader and Explorer to copy the files to my external hard-drive then Add (import) from there.  I keep my photos and LR library on an external hard-drive so I can work on them between several computers.
If the files seem ok on one system but not the other it could be a permissions issue, but since you don’t use LR on the netbook something else may be occurring that is more complicated.

  • Runtime error in starting Lightroom

I receive the following message when I try to start Lightroom:
    Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
    Runtime Error!
    Program:...Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 1.2\lightroom.exe
This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.
Please contact the application's support team for more information.
Lightroom ran well for several days and then failed to open with the above message.
I have tried everything I know to do (uninstalled and reinstalled the application, restored the computer to a restore point before Lightroom was originally installed, etc.) and do not know were to go from here. Suggestions would be appreciated.
I am using Windows XP sp2 and have 4 GB of ram and 250 GB of hard disk space.

  • Lightroom imports photos to wrong folder

I've been importing lots of photos from my hard drive into lightroom and been moving/renaming them in the process. I only got lightroom a few weeks ago.
This has worked fine but i've recently imported a few hundred photos off my iphone and doing the same thing - move and rename. The trouble is, these photos keep going into the 2009 folder, instead of the 2012 or 2013 folders that they should be. When i look at the photos, they have the correct name, and the capture date seems to be correct, its just lightroom keeps wanting to put them in the wrong folder by year. Does anyone understand why this might be happening?
naturally I want all my photos sorted into the right date folders as this is the way ive decided to organise my photos...

hmm so still not making sense. it keeps wanting to import my photos into the wrong destination. have removed all the photo from lightroom. how do i change it so it automatically puts the photos into the corresponding year/month they were taken..
I understand its something in the import settings/destination but cant seem to change this. not sure what parts of the import box your wanting to see Dj.
the structure now is my pictures/2009/21-7-09 then its creating new year folders and sorting them within this 21-7-9 folder..
    can't see to change this?

Can someone please let me know how I can fix this error and open my Lightroom?  Thanks.

You might be quicker help posting in the LR forum rather than the ACR forum, but I believe the way to fix this is to delete the preview cache.
    Find your catalog folder.
    Close LR.
Within the catalog folder, delete the FOLDER called Catalog-Name Previews.lrdata
    Start LR.

I selected yours as the correct answer because of the webpage you provided, but I cannot understand that what "only use it on one computer at a time".
