Lightroom Performance with Yosemite

Is there a performance advantage or improvement for Lightroom running with Yosemite? Currently running Mavericks.
Thanks.

Hey pschooner,
Thanks for the question. I understand that you are experiencing performance issues with your Mac running OS X Yosemite. According to the following resource, you Mac definitely meets all of the system requirements:
Apple - OS X Yosemite - How to Upgrade
http://www.apple.com/osx/how-to-upgrade/
I see that you have already checked your disk with disk utility. The following resource provides some more steps that you may want to try:

  • Poor performance with Yosemite and early 2009 Mac Pro

I have an early 2009 Mac Pro with the following specs:
    - 2.66 GHz Quad Core Intel Xeon
    - 10 GB of 1066 MHz RAM
    - NVidia GeForce GT 120 512 MB
    - 256 MB solid state drive for my system partition
    - Two monitors connected, each at 1680x1050 resolution
Back when I was running OS X 10.7 or 10.8 I found that for every day tasks the performance using my computer was adequate. However, starting around 10.9, and even worse since upgrading to 10.10, thinks have gotten painfully slow. To give an example, activating Mission Control can take upwards of four seconds, with the animation being very choppy. Changing tabs on a Finder window can take two seconds for the switch to happen. Just switching between different windows, it can take several seconds for a window to activate. It's gotten to the point where I'm having difficulty working. So I'm thinking of upgrading some of my hardware.
Given my specs the weakest link seems to be my graphics card, and all of these issues do seem to be related to graphics. So my questions are:
    - Do you think upgrading my graphics card will substantially improve things, and is there anything else I should upgrade?
    - Is this slowness just the result of the computer being nearly six years old, and no upgrades will really improve things that much?
    Thanks in advance!

Between Setup Assistant, and your existing system "untouched" (or use CCC if say you want to use an existing SSD for the system) there is no reason it should be a lot of work setting up. Have you ever used Migration or Setup? it has also gotten better.
Also, having 10.9.5 on another drive and running DU - and TRIM _now_ would be helpful.
Looking at just what gremlins you have running around inside your current system is not bad but.... sometimes the "long road" turns a shortcut into a dead end, and avoiding doing what seems the long road and hardest gets you where you want to go: a solid stable system.
Less is more. Most systems have more than needed and they get in the way and can cause trouble. Even handy "widgets" and those things that monitor system functions, even disk status. Which is why I like seeing a separate small system maintenance volume just for the weekly checkup. 30GB is more than enough so just slice out a partition somewhere - on another drive/device.
Those things, more so than and a lot cheaper than a new GPU. If  your SSD is two years old, the 840 EVO from Samsung is down under $120 for 250GB, or use one for Lightroom / Aperture / iPhoto or scratch.
One person was complaining about sluggish window issue and thought it was the driver. Turned out It happened in ONE APP, not everywhere - very telling - and the app in question needs update. Adobe updated CC (for Windows) last month to finally support dual Dxx and some of the newer AMD GPUs - can the mac be far behind?
10GB RAM? that would not be 3 x 4GB or any combination using triple channel memory.

  • IMac crawling with Yosemite

I have a 2010 iMac with 8GB of RAM, 115 GB available on HD. Since installing, my machine is crawling. I sometimes get down to 15MB of RAM. Constantly running Memory Cleaner. Even my Ethernet Internet is slow (4 Mbps down, .10(!) up), running through Airport. Is there anything that I can do short of re-installing Mavericks? I have run verify disk permissions, have all media on an external. Oh, and I am constantly booted from iCloud and iTunes...have to enter passwords daily.

  • Problems importing photos to Lightroom 5.7 on iMac with Yosemite

I have photoshop 5.7..creative cloud and it is installed on a iMac late 2014 27 retina display with Yosemite operating system.. Lightroom seems to work fine except it will not impost photos from any camera I load up to it.. I can upload photos to iPhoto but not to lioghtroom.. any suggestions?> Thanks

That doesn't make any sense. If you can load the images into iPhoto, you should be able to load them into Lightroom. What I guess is going on is that you have the wrong destination folder selected in Lightroom. If your destination is in a place where Lightroom cannot write files (this is true for both the windows and mac os versions) it will throw an error that it cannot read the files. Very counterintuitively it will then tell you that because it cannot write to the location. So check to make sure the destination selected is in your home folder (typically inside Pictures) instead of the root level of your hard drive or another location where it shouldn't go.

  • Is Lightroom 4 compatible with Yosemite?

I really want to install Yosemite, but I depend on Lightroom 4 for work.  Has anyone installed Yosemite and is Lightroom 4 running fine?  I can't install Yosemite unless Lightroom 4 works perfectly.
    Thanks.

    Please be careful
I am an Adobe user CS5 and LR4
I upgraded this evening and now have no CS5!!
An Adobe agent has just told me that LR4 is NOT compatible with Yosemite!
The same agent felt it would be a good idea for me to pay Adobe $400 to upgrade to CS6 and then I could use LR4 and PS!!!!!!!!
    I am disgusted

  • Yosemite, poor performance with Apple TV

I usually use my apple tv as second display over wifi with my MacBookAir6,2 13'' 8GB RAM but today i installed Yosemite from App Store and i can't use my apple tv as a second display because the video streaming is really slow and is really annoying work with that performance, i tried to use mirror display over airplay too but i had the same issue. it a problem with Yosemite ?? when will apple repair that ??. I also tried to use the P2P airplay without my wifi access point only with my mac and apple tv but its the same issue.
I really miss when apple worked with almost any problems.

I've got the same problem, and what I have discovered, guys:
Home Sharing in iTunes is switched on in 2 places
    1. In the File menu is the global switch
    2. In the iTunes Preferences on the Sharing Tab you can switch on the sharing via LOCAL network! And if you look at the STATUS in the bottom of that window, you most probably will see "On, no users connected"
That means, that probably our Apple TV is working so slow under Yosemite because it is streaming all the content via the INTERNET rather than doing it via our LOCAL networks!
I tried to select "Require password" there.
And no device in my network was prompted to enter the password! That also confirmed that my devices were not even trying to connect to my iTunes library via the LOCAL network.
After that I tried to switch off the Home Sharing on my other computer. Then tried to connect to my iTunes library, and BINGO it ASKED for the password! Now the iTunes is showing that 1 user IS connected:
And streaming started to work much faster!
The only problem - I cannot do the same on my Apple TV. I cannot switch off the Home Sharing on the Apple TV and still see the iTunes Library. I can only do so on a computer. :-(

Snow Leopard's Startup Disk pref can’t see Yosemite volumes. So the only way to switch from Snow Leopard to Yosemite is to do what Niel mentioned. Doesn't matter whether it's connected by USB or Firewire, although performance via FW would be faster.
Are you saying that Yos/10.10, as a volume located in a mounted external drive won't appear as an option in Snow Leopard's Startup Disc, in Sys Prefs? I've never heard this one before. AFAIK any mounted volume, regardless of OS, should appear there. I would think that, if it appears in the Boot Picker/Startup Manager it would also appear and could be booted to from Snow's Startup Disk. I can't test this myself, since I don't have Yos. Is what you are saying documented somewhere?

  • Adobe Photoshop Elements 12 does not work with Yosemite 10.10

My Adobe Photoshop Elements 12 does not work with Yosemite 10.10 nor does my Premier Elements 12. When I try to start them up I get the error message. After uninstalling and reinstalling a few times its still the same. Strangely enough PSE 11 seem to work with Yosemite.  I uninstalled my Premier Elements as well and it behave the same way. How do I get a new copy of Premier Elements 12 to reinstall?

Just to further test what is happening to my iMac on Yosemite is I downloaded the trial version of Photoshop CC and when I go to launch it it gives mr the same error message as when I try to launch PES 12 or Premier Elements 12. So whatever the problem is it involves all three and so upgrading to Photoshop CC doesn't even help.  Could there be an Adobe file damaged or missing somewhere that is common to these and yet does not effect Revel and Lightroom?

  • FAQ: Will Lightroom work with my camera, or Why won't my raw files open?

    What is a raw file?
A raw file is the unprocessed data that was captured by your camera sensor when you took your picture. The only settings on your camera that apply to this file are aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. This means that any effects you may have applied to the file, such as white balance or black and white, may not appear in Lightroom. Your camera will create a JPEG copy of your raw file with all current settings applied and save that within the raw file for use as a thumbnail by most applications. When you first view a raw file in Lightroom, you will see this thumbnail, then Lightroom will read the raw data and create its own thumbnail, which may have a different appearance.
How does Lightroom work with raw camera files?
Lightroom interprets the raw data and makes image information out of it. But every camera has a unique sensor and thus has a unique form of raw file. Even though camera manufactures may use the same file extension each time (e.g. Nikon raw files are always .NEF), each camera model has a different way of storing information. Because of this, we must continually update Lightroom for new cameras. As we add new cameras to the list (over 300 now) we update our published list of supported cameras.
Will the raw files from my camera work with Lightroom?
To determine whether your camera is supported by Lightroom, check this list:
    Supported cameras
Go to Help > Updates to install the latest release. You can also manually download and install Lightroom updates:
    Macintosh
    Windows
What if I own a previous version of Lightroom?
Supposing you have a camera that came out after the release of a newer version of Lightroom, so that your version of Elements is no longer recieving updates, you have two basic options:
Purchase the latest version of Lightroom that supports your camera.
Use the latest version of the free DNG Converter (for Macintosh or Windows)
You can convert your files to the universaly compatible DNG format (the files will work with any version of the Lightroom). See In depth : Digital Negative (DNG) for more information.

Can I perform tethered capture from my camera to Lightroom?
Lightroom has the ability to automatically import images from your camera, as you shoot, life. To learn more about setting up and useing tethered capture, please see Import photos from a tethered camera. This list shows all the cameras that Lightroom supports for tethered shoooting:

Will Lightroom help me automatically compensate for the image distortion caused by my camera lens?
The Develop module of Lightroom includes Lens Correction which can read what lens was used from the metadata. With this information it can pick a profile that will reduce distortion caused by the curvature of the lens. For a list of which lenses are supported by which camera bodies, see this list:
    Lens profile support | Lightroom 4, 3
If your lens is not currently supported, you have a few options:
    Apply the lens correction manually
Use the Adobe Lens Profile Downloader (Download: Mac, Win) to see if someone else has created a profile your camera and lens
Use the Adobe Lens Profile Creator (Download: Mac, Win) to make your own profile for your camera and lens.

From reading Vista forums support for SSD is one of the things Vista SP2 and Windows 7 hope (need) to improve upon. I was in a similar discussion once befoe on SSDs:

"My guess is that [Samsung and Microsoft] are maybe working on the OS recognizing an SSD with a 4K-byte sector size instead of a hard disk drive with a 512-byte sector size," Wong said.
Sun is already working with Samsung to bulk up SSD support on the ZFS (Zettabyte File System), which is included in the Solaris OS, and will also be supported in Apple's upcoming Mac OS X 10.6, codenamed Snow Leopard. Sun is adding capabilities to boost the durability and performance of SSDs on ZFS-based operating systems. For example, Sun may add defragmentation capabilities for SSDs, which organizes data in a particular order to enable quicker data access.
SSDs were not considered ideal for defragmentation because of limited read-and-write capabilities, Wong said. However, Samsung and Sun in July jointly announced an 8G-byte SSD that bumped up durability from 100,000 read-and-write cycles to 500,000. That brings defragmentation in SSDs closer to reality, which could improve its caching and provide quicker access to data. Sun plans to put SSDs into storage products later this year.

  • Unhappy with Yosemite's "new" Pages? Or the "new" photos?

ME TOO! I cannot tell you how much Yosemite's version of Pages *****. Here's why:
It has been redesigned to work more like the mobile version. Bad idea right out of the box. Think about it. No matter how handy it may be on occasion to do a simple card or similar thing on your iPad or iPhone's Pages, please tell me exactly how anyone would find it better in any conceivable way than doing it on their computer, with it's full fledged programs! Why would anyone (especially those who work with words and graphics) prefer the new version that oh, just like the mobile one, has FEWER features, not MORE, than the previous version? The inevitable will soon happen: you resort to time wasting work arounds or be forced to look around for a better program that is full featured and well organized. But that's also a time waster.
I am also unhappy about how Apple has ditched iPhoto and Aperture. That said, as a long time user of Aperture, I was already resigned to using another expensive Adobe program (Lightroom).
As disconcerted as I am about things that Apple has done or may do in the future, I went out and bought two new Apple computers. My 2008 Intel iMac died and my husband's 2002 Powerbook was unbearably slow. I got a new iMac for me, and a Macbook Air for my husband. Without considering any windows computers. However, since it has become clear that Apple will do whatever it wants, no matter what long time users, often professional, need.
I think Yosemite is OK as an upgrade operating system and the presence or lack of the transparency it had, is a design issue that is not of great importance to me. But the dumbed down software? Now that is a gripe.

Is there any fix to this, though? I had a perfectly fine template for my newsletter, and trying to get it to work with Yosemite is a nightmare. OK, end of complaint. Is it possible to get text to follow onto the next page? That's my immediate problem. Also, I am saving constantly, but if I make one little change to a page, it seems to screw things up several pages away - I want those pages to stay the way they were. Deadline approaching!

  • Lightroom 4 and Yosemite

    Hi
Has anyone dared upgraded to OSX Yosemite and still maintained Lightroom 4?
I haven't upgraded to Lightroom 5 and with 6 coming in March, I won't be paying to upgrade to 5 when 6 is just around the corner.  I didn't see anything in 5 that I thought was worth the full upgrade price, so I haven't upgraded so far.
I'm pretty excited about the things Yosemite can offer Mac users BUT if it all comes at a cost to maintain Adobe products I will just have to hold off until March and upgrade all at once

Be aware of an unfixed color management big in Lightroom running on Yosemite or Mavericks. More here: Lightroom 5 ICC profiles clipped shadows under OSX
And quantization here: Jao's photo blog: Further quantification of the Mavericks color management problem
This bug has existed since Mavericks and is present in LR 5 and will kill the display of shadow areas in Develop (they will be OK in Library). I have never tried it with LR 4 but I wouldn't hold out hope. Every single Mac running Lightroom on Mavericks or Yosemite has this problem. Haven't found any exceptions yet. I think most people do not notice if you do not care much about the display of very deep shadows but as soon as you notice it you'll see it all the time. You can work around it by turning on soft proofing which will correct the shadow display but that is a kludge.

  • Lightroom3 compatibility with yosemite?

    Does lightroom3 run on yosemite?

If you have the License Key for your Lightroom 3 you can download the latest version from the link below and activate with the key and see how it operates.
Adobe - Lightroom : For Macintosh : Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3.6
Photoshop CS4 is a different issue and the License Key is specific to the operating system Mac or Win. You will first have to deactivate from the old system before you can install on the new computer.
The other option would be to have a look at the Creative Cloud Photographers plan available for a monthly subscription Photoshop CC 2014 with Lightroom included with the package.

  • Is iDVD compatibility with Yosemite?

    Hi, everybody!
When I installed Yosemite in my iMac, I chose to perform a clean installation, so I lost all of my applications. So, I tried to reinstall iDVD but I could't find it in AppStore. As I've read, iDVD really doesn't appears for direct installation, so, I installed it from my iLife CD and updated it to version 7.1.2. But, when I try to run it, the app freezes and I'm obligated to quit it (most of time, force quit) and relaunch it. But, in a few seconds (or minutes), the app starts freezing again and this makes impossible for me to use it.
I thinks it's not a problem caused by lack of memory, since I have 16 GB installed here...
Is the app compatible with Yosemite? If it is, what do you suggest for me to solve this issue? If it's not, could you suggest another good DVD creator?
    Thank you!

837.3MB for 59 minutes is incredibly small. What format are these files in?
    Formats supported by iDVD 7:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iDVD/7.0/en/6655.html
    iDVD encoding settings:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1502?viewlocale=en_US
    Short version:
Best Performance is for videos of up to 60 minutes
Best Quality is for videos of up to 120 minutes
Professional Quality is also for up to 120 minutes but even higher quality (and takes much longer)
That was for single-layer DVDs. Double these numbers for dual-layer DVDs.
Professional Quality: The Professional Quality option uses advanced two-pass technology to encode your video (The first pass determines which parts of the movie can be given greater compresson without quality loss and which parts can’t.  The second pass then encodes those different parts accordingly) , resulting in the best quality of video possible on your burned DVD. You can select this option regardless of your project’s duration (up to 2 hours of video for a single-layer disc and 4 hours for a double-layer disc). Because Professional Quality encoding is time-consuming (requiring about twice as much time to encode a project as the High Quality option, for example) choose it only if you are not concerned about the time taken.
In both cases the maximum length includes titles, transitions and effects etc. Allow about 15 minutes for these.
You can use the amount of video in your project as a rough determination of which method to choose. If your project has an hour or less of video (for a single-layer disc), choose Best Performance. If it has between 1 and 2 hours of video (for a single-layer disc), choose High Quality. If you want the best possible encoding quality for projects that are up to 2 hours (for a single-layer disc), choose Professional Quality. This option takes about twice as long as the High Quality option, so select it only if time is not an issue for you.
Use the Capacity meter in the Project Info window (choose Project > Project Info) to determine how many minutes of video your project contains.
NOTE: With the Best Performance setting, you can turn background encoding off by choosing Advanced > “Encode in Background.” The checkmark is removed to show it’s no longer selected. Turning off background encoding can help performance if your system seems sluggish.
And whilst checking these settings in iDVD Preferences, make sure that the settings for NTSC/PAL and DV/DV Widescreen are also what you want.
