Lightroom Photo Transfer Question

I am transferring photos to a new computer.  All files have been transferred other than the Lightroom file.  It is approximately 15 gigs.
My question is whether or not it should be transferred.  Does this contain pictures or is it simply comprised of backups and previews?
Thank you in advance!

That folder contains your catalog and the previews folder. It needs to be on the new computer. After you install Lightroom on the new computer you can just double-click on that catalog and begin using Lightroom just as you did before. Perhaps the following will give you a better understanding of how to move your Lightroom to a new computer:

  • Photo Transfer Question

How do I transfer a photo from my Mac Book to Photos on iPad2?  I do not want to transfer all photos, but some.
I tried searching old threads, but didn't find an answer  that fit my needs.
    Thanks!

Where are your photos stored on your Mac?
iPhoto is included with every new Mac purchase. iPhoto is a photo storage/management app that can also be used to import photos from a digital camera including from the iPad's Camera Roll.
If you aren't using iPhoto, I suggest giving it a try. When importing photos with iPhoto, Events are created by selected dates for the photos imported with a preference setting for this. Existing Events can be combined or an existing event can be split into another Event. You can also make liberal use of iPhoto Albums for select photos - similar to creating an iTunes playlist for select music. If you use the Mail app on your Mac for email account access, you can select photos to be emailed direct with the Mail app from within iPhoto, and you can add select photos or an entire Album to be uploaded to FaceBook or Flickr direct from iPhoto. And iPhoto includes a Places and Faces feature.
When using iPhoto, under the Photos tab for your iPad sync preferences with iTunes you can transfer all photos in your iPhoto library - all photos, events, albums, and faces, or you can transfer select events, albums, and faces. Your chosen order of photos in the Events and Albums in iPhoto selected to be transferred to your iPad will be reflected with the Events and Albums on your iPad. To remove an Event or Album from your iPad, deselect the Event or Album under the Photos tab for your iPad sync preferences with iTunes followed by a sync.

  • Adobe Lightroom Photo editing question! Help please

Hey there, I'm trying to find a way to edit a certain part of a picture rather than the whole thing. For instance, if I want to make a small area black and white, while I increase the saturation of another area, and decrease the temperature of another area. How do I go about selecting only part of the picture, edit it, and then revert back to the whole picture and edit another part of the same picture? Please help me. I am using Adobe lightroom.

Is there any way to get a square section and edit it? I watched the movie which was extremely informative but still there was no way demonstrated to edit a particular area besides by using the mouse to just paint over it or drag through a huge section of the picture.

  • Photo Transfer to 5G Questions

I'd like to download photos from my digital camera to my 5G but don't really wish to spend $50 Can for the adapter that Apple sells. Was wondering then if my camera USB cable and iPod USB cable could simply be connected with a USB female-female connector or, does the Apple camera adapter perform some sort of signal processing?
Also, I can't figure out what initiates the photo transfer - there seems to be no menu options for it in the iPod. Or, does the transfer take place automatically when the camera and iPod are connected?
    TIA for any help.........

    Hi Laurie,
After you plug in the camera adapter the iPod goes to an import screen where you select Import to copy the photos to the iPod. I believe the connector is the only way to have this work (a dock to usb cable won't do the trick).

  • How do I manage Lightroom photos when using 2 computers, keeping all edits made on either one?

Based on http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1308132?tstart=0 I decided to add each question seperately:
Hello, I'm quite interested in buying Lightroom 5.2. I tried the RC which ran out now. Yet, I have a several questions that I can't really find good conclusive answers to, that I'd like to get answered before buying LR. Please don't write maybe like this or that (assumptions), since I don't want to start my whole workflow and then realize that I have to change everything around, so please answer, if you know for sure that something works and you are, preferably, using that method too.
This is the biggest question, where I mainly want a conclusive answer:  How do I manage Lightroom photos when using 2 computers, keeping all edits made on either one of them, using the same photos for editing. I won't use DNG. Details: I mainly use my older MacBook Pro, but would like to be able to use my PC as it's way better (Specs: i5 2500K, 16GB RAM, SSD, USB3, nVidia GTX 560 TI etc.). I have 2 external HDs that I could use, one for Backup and one for the actual Photos/Edits. I'll probably need to use it as my internal HDs are quite full, and I can't just delete stuff or move it to an (Developer programs, Lossless music, etc.).
Based on this, how do I back up the whole thing e.g. Photos folder (all photos and edits, and preferably presets too)?

I believe it should be possible to work cross-platform without having to relink files each time, or without having to keep exporting/importing the catalog, by keeping the single catalog and the image library on the one external drive which is then switched between systems as needed.
Obvious first requirement is an external drive that is formatted in such a way (e.g FAT32) that it can be used on both platforms in read/write mode. Given that, if the catalog AND the images parent folder are both established at the same level in one overall parent folder, then it should be possible to take advatage of Lightroom's ability to use relative paths rather than absolute paths to detect the images, no matter if the drive is named (Mac) or lettered (PC). This is how "export as Catalog" works, i.e. it creates a "package", aka a parent folder, containing the catalog and a replica of the exported images folder hierarchy alongside the catalog. Take that "package" to another system (same OS or not) and "it just works" even if the drive letter is different or the OS is different....because the relative path from catalog to images is still the same.
I haven't tested this cross-platform (though I have between different PC systems with different drive letters) so for me it's still just a theory, but there may be others who have done this successfully.

  • Nokia photo transfer for Mac Yosemite OS

    Hi,
It seems that Nokia Photo Transfer does not work in the Mac Yosemite OS – at least it does not find my Lumia 1020. Is there any chance of getting an update – or is there any other way to transfer photos speedily by a USB cable from Lumia to Mac?
    Cheers,
    Ilkka

@Ilkko Photo Transfer 1.2.31 works with my OS X v10.10.2 and my Lumia 1520 phone with Lumia Denim as firmware. I attached the Lumia before I started Photo Transfer. Then, Photo Transfer asked me to unlock the password protected screen. Do you face any error message? We need that word for word.
If you do not face any error message, please, enbale (tick) Photo Transfer » Menu » File » Enable Logs. Then, go for Finder » Menu » Utilities » Console (left hand side, All Messages). Anything specific there? You are able to copy and paste it here.
If nothing is displayed in OS X Console either, please, go for Menu » Apple » About this Mac » More Info » System Report » (Hardware) USB: Is your ‘Lumia 1020 (RM-87x)’ listed there? Via System Information » Menu » File » Refresh Information, you are able to detach and attach your device, while double-checking the displayed information.
If your phone is not shown in System Information, did it work before? Which operating system and version?
If your phone is shown in System Information, please, we have to go for the USB Prober. However, because I have not tested that app on Yosemite v10.10 my self either, please, answer the above questions. Then, I look into that path here in more detail and give you an explaination what to do.

  • Lightroom color cast question of JPEG image

Lightroom color cast question of JPEG image
Camera Canon MKII Color Matrix Adobe RGB
Photoshop CS Color Setting Adobe RGB (1998)
Lightroom 1.2 as new lightroom user I did not think that I needed to choose a color setting or color profile until I am ready to print my photos. I have not done any preset camera calibration.
Link to my website with example photo http://www.basecampphotos.com/color.jpg
My question is why is Lightroom displaying the images with a yellow color cast ? The image is a print screen from Lightroom on the left and Photoshop on the right The color cast problem can be seen in the white walls of the stairway. Also when viewing the image with Windows Picture and Fax viewer the walls are white as expected.
Any ideas or suggestions as to why Lightroom is displaying the images with the yellow color cast or what I need to do to correct the issue ?
    Thanks
    Jim

Almost definitely a corrupt monitor profile. Time and again this turns out to be the cause of such differences between PS and LR. You need to recalibrate the monitor or if you do not have a hardware calibrator, delete the profile from windows' monitor properties pane to test and then get a hardware calibrator.
P.S since you are using adobeRGB jpegs, Windows picture and Fax viewers cannot give you the correct colors even on a calibrated monitor. Those are not color managed programs (I believe picture viewer finally is in Vista but definitely not in XP which you appear to be using). Also, PS has to be correctly set up to always preserve embedded profiles and to ask when you have profile mismatches, otherwise even PS will give incorrect color. Make sure to set this up in Edit>Color settings.
P.S.2: Make sure you are not applying defaults in Lightroom to your images either on import or elsewhere. Sometimes people by accident define develop defaults that in this case might contain a white balance shift. Go to LR preferences and open the Presets tab. Here click on "Reset all default Develop settings" and make sure that only the auto grayscale checkbox is ticked. For images that it might have already happened to, make sure to hit the reset button.

  • Lightroom 5 Transfer to new HD problems

I recently had a HD failure but had my LR catelogue backed up on Time Machine.  Also all of my photos were on external HD. After slowly sorting through a number of problems transfering all of my back up documents I thought I was all sorted out.  I have been working in LR 5.  A number of photos, but not all,  have the "!" mark.  I seem to be able to work in the development module and export photos without difficulty.  Today was the first time I tried to import new photos into my "My Lightroom Photos" folder which sits on my external HD.  When I tried to import and add a new folder I was prompted "This location is read-only"  Next I looked on my computer HD under Pictures.  There I have a Lightroom folder with my catelogues.  Now I see the catelogues are grayed out. Is this normal? I have been able to back up my work when quiting LR.  I am concerned that the Time Machine backup was not copied correctly to my new HD.  This was the case with my documents.  I had to redue this action by first copying my documents to another ext. HD and then importing it to my new internal HD.
Do you think this might be the same problem with the pictures folder?
    What do I do next?

Debra, at least some of your issues relate to red/write permissions on that external drive
R-click on that drive and then select 'info'.
Then look for the read/write permissions.
What you will find is that you currently have read but not write privileges.
Change you account to have both read/write permission.
That should sort the import issue.
You do need to relink those images by R-clicking on them and then anvigating to the appropriate image.
It may be easier to relink the folders or whole hierarchies if the folders are also greyed out.
I am not sure what significance the greyed out catalog folders hold but I am yet learning the ins-and-outs of Mac OS.

  • Startup Disk full. I have external backup drive. Can I delete folders in My Lightroom photos?

I am using Mac Intel OSX Lion. I received a screen message that stated my startup disk is full. I am positive this is due to my 10,000 or so photos (mostly RAW files) stored in My Lightroom photos folders. Since my photos are externally  backed up can I delete those 9000-10,000 photos in various folders of My Lightroom? And by doing this do I free up disk space in my computer's hard drive?
I might also mention that photos created in LR5 are saved to folders in the Mac's Pictures area under "Favorites." So am I duplicating, i.e, doubling the file hogging capacity, because it is in Pictures and also in LR5. Any help is much appreciated.

    Jim,
See my posted title: I backed up all 9000+ photos in 3 external hard drives. Two are full but the third still has a lot of capacity. All photos are saved in lossless .dng file. I don't have a problem going back to those external drive files if I want to do more post processing with the photos.  I fail to understand why my startup disk on the Mac is full as the great majority of file space taken up are from LR5 photos. I only have two or three Mac Applications: Swift Publisher and Quicken Essentials, both of which do not require huge hard disk space.
By the way, those 9000+ RAW files are also stored in Pictures in the Mac. 9000 files each about 20Mb I calculate to 180Gb. Am I right?

  • Need help undoing photo transfer from iPhone 4s.

Hello gang, I need some help with a photo transfer as things have gone awry!
I had ~100 photos in my Camera Roll on my 4s.  Went to transfer these to a PC, as usual; however, I did (2) thiings differently this time:
    (a) did this directly to a USB (instead of to my hard drive first).
    (b) Instead of my normal 'copy/paste/delete' I did a 'cut/paste' in order to save a step.
Well, lo and behold, these are now on my USB but each at 1KB size and when I go to view I get the message "Windows Photo Viewer can't open this picture because either Photo Viewer doesn't support this file format, or you don't have the latest updates to Photo Viewer."  My PC is running Windows 7, and right now I have about 100 photos that are not accessible.  I am not able to 'copy' back to the iPhone and at this point they are lost.
I am curious if copying directly to the USB instead of to my hard drive has generated this issue, although I do not understand why.  I have plugged in the USB to other PCs and photos are still not readable, nor are the photos still present in my Camera Roll.  Please tell me these are not gone?!
    Help!

Please, try "Photo Transfer WiFi" or "Sync Photos to Storage" from the App Store. Does it solves your problem?
I recommend you the second app. It allows you to send all your Camera Roll photos and videos to the desktop in one tap!

    OK Vicky, good clues...
    See if this helps...
Open Keychain Access in Utilities, use Keychain First Aid under the Keychain Menu item, then either check the Password under that item, change it, or delete it and start over. See if there are duplicates, should be one for Incoming & one for Outgoing.
Resetting your keychain in Mac OS X...
If Keychain First Aid finds an issue that it cannot repair, or if you do not know your keychain password, you may need to reset your keychain.
