Lightroom Photobook issue - undoing a saved book?

I am using Lightroom 4.3.   I am using it on a PC.   In the past, I have used Blurb booksmart to make a photobook.   However, since Lightroom 4 offered it, I decided to make a photobook within Lightroom.  Before starting,  I put my photos in a Collection set which contained multiple collections in order of the what I wished to appear in the photobook.  I started populating the photobook from the collection set.   As I was finishing for the day, I did not know whether it should be saved or not.   So I saved it under "create saved book".   It saved it as a book.  By the way, I did not know where to save the photobook so I saved it within the collection set.
I then went back to the collection set and suddenly something was happening.   Afterward, I noted that the auto layout was putting this collection into a photobook, plus all the other collections within the collection set.   I do not now seem to be able to undo it.   Also every collection is locked into a separate photobook - though an unsaved version.   I now do not seem able to access the photos in the collection set.
After saving my original photobook which was not complete, I had wanted to go into the rest of the collection folders within the collection set and continue to populate the photobook with the photos.   However, I do not seem to be able to finish the original photobook as after the auto layyout, each of the collections are now in the initial stages of being a photobook themselves.
Can anyone help me please.

I had the same problem - and eventually worked out a pretty simple answer! :-)
You'll see a folderfor your saved book, which will indicate the number of images stored with it. In Library mode, just drag the additional images to the book folder and you'll see the number increase accordingly.
It's pretty smart too - and doesn't seem to duplicate images if you drag an existing image into the book folder.

  • How to import new photos in a saved book in lightroom 4

    Hello!
I created a book in the lightroom 4 book module using a photo catalogue. This photo catalogue is updated with new photo every week in the library module, and I would like to be able to use these new photos in the book module. Is there a way to sync the library and book module so when I add some picture in my catalogue in the library module the new photos will appear in the book module?
thanks a lot for your help
    Regards
    Richard

    Hello!
No replies indeed. I can't believe there is not one person in Adobe who can't answer this basic question!! No answer on adobe TV either!! So does that mean that when you start a book project you have to make sure that you have all the photos you want to include in your book with no option to add new or better photos? I can't believe such a good software can't offer this option. COME ON GUYS!!!!!!!!!
As for your blank filmstrip, are you sure the book you are working on is selected?
If you find how to import new photos in a saved book please let me know!! I 'll do the same by posting a note here.
    Thanks a lot!!

  • How can I add new images to a saved book in Lightroom 4? Help please!

As the title suggests, I have created a saved book in LR4. I saved it not because I had finished but because I wanted to protect my work to date. Now I cannot add new images, although I can work with (move and remove) the exisintg images in the book.
I'm new to LR and can't help but feel that I'm missing something obvious. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks
    Graham

Graham, switch to Grid view and drag the new photos to the book collection, which you'll find in the Collections panel.  Then flip back to the Book module and you'll find the photos sat there in the Filmstrip waiting to be added to the book design.

  • How changes the collection of a saved book in Lightroom?

I started to created a book in lighroom and did not use a collection. When I saved* the book Lighroom put the used photo in the book in a collection. But I want to see
all the photos and not just the used photos. But i can not change the collection! (when i changed the collection a new book is visible and my saved book will disappear )..
How can i set the option that not only the used photos are visible in the collection?
*(Lighroom ask me when i saved the book to only show the used photo, and i said yes, but now i want to changes that, so i can see all my photos to add more new photos)
I like to hear from you..
    Thanks

I want to use an existing smart collection for creating my book. This is a book that I'm editing and making new additions. The smart collection continues to grow as I set keywords on pictures. Unfortunately, since I saved the book now there is no way to use my smart collection. I had to manually add files to it.
Arrrrg, I want my book to use the existing smart collection. Only when I publish should it limit it to a photoset.

  • "Saved" Book in LR4B has disappeared

Wondering how I can retrieve the book I was working on in Beta 4.  Working in Windows 7.  Had been able to move between modules okay, Library > Book > Develop, and back and forth and so on, and everything seemed to be working fine.  Had been able to click on the "saved" book I was working on and have it load properly while working on it, loading photos, configuring pages, etc., but now the book does not load.  It shows up in the menu, but all of the pages I had added and all of the photos and text that were "saved" are, alas, no longer there.  The film strip at the bottom still shows the photos that had been added as well as the photos yet to be added to the book,   Just no layouts of what I had done, just new , blank layouts.  Any help in retrieving what I have done up to this point?  Thanks

Just had my book project disappear from the LR4 book module. Wait, that's not entirely accurate. The book project is still in the collection and the filmstrip still shows the number of times each image is included in the book, but the book content is gone.
Here's my recreation of the last steps before the pages went missing.
I have two books in the collection- one intended for print, another for electronic publishing. The content is identical. Once I finish an area in version A, I mirror the steps in version B by jumping back 'n forth between collections to repeat the steps. I finished a final tweak on the manuscript- font size, color, leading, kerning, baseline, etc. in version A and was beginning to copy the manuscript over to version B by Copy/Paste when the book pages went away. The last step I performed: In version A on a full page of two column text- approximately 400 words, I highlighted the entire text (ctrl+a), copied the text to the clipboard (ctrl+c), then double clicked version B in the collections pane to changes sources. When version B opened there was a blank cover, and two blank pages in the workspace. When I double clicked back to version A, hoping to refresh the program, version B was identical to version A- blank cover and two blank pages. None of the steps I've tried to undo the glitch have worked.
Hopefully someone will come up with a fix for this. The information must still be embedded somewhere in the library. I just need LR to see it and call it back up.
In the mean time, I've got a couple of ideas people can use to help minimize the setback, should it happen to you.
1- Set your catalog backup to: Every time LIghtroom closes. Go to Edit>Catalog Settings... At the bottom of the pop-up under Backup choose: Every time LIghtroom exits from the dropdown menu. Click OK.
If you loose your work you can open the backup catalog and hopefully you won't have lost too many steps.
2- Save a PDF version of your book as you progress. At the bottom of the Left Module pane click Export Book to PDF... I'd recommend also not overwriting the PDF backup when you do this in case the export fails. Save at least one redundant backup.
If you loose your work and the back up isn't recent (or working), you at least have one copy to work from in PDF form.
3- Write your manuscript in another program, such as Microsoft Office or OneNote, then copy/paste the script into the pages in the Book module.
If you loose your work, it's just a matter of copy/pasting the copy back into the book once you rebuild it to that step.
Best of luck, and if anyone hears of a fix for this, please let everyone know.
    Best,
    CS

  • I can not access existing library folder when editing a previously saved book, please help

    Hi
I am a 3rd year University student, brand new to lightroom and am creating (trying to) create 3 books for my final university assignment.
I have created and saved "RABBET FINAL", and then carried on with the next 2 books, I now would like to go back and add more images to "RABBET FINAL", but when i select the the library folder I used previously called "All that i have", it automatically opens a new unsaved book. I then try to click on my saved book "RABBET FINAL", and it changes a library folder to a folder which only the images which are already in "RABBET FINAL"
When I hover the cursor over the library folder at the bottom, it says "ALL that i have + unsaved book. Is this the issue?
The BOOK also has a "+" next to it, is this causing it not to allow me to select from a different library?
    I hope this makes sense.
    [email protected]

A saved book behaves like an ordinary collection.
In the book module click on RABBET FINAL in the left hand panel. It will have a double page book icon if it’s a saved book. Now right click on that saved book and choose Set As target Collection. A plus sign will indicate it is the target.
Now return to the Library and the folder with the images you wish to add. Use shift-click to select (highlight) the images you want or Ctrl+Click for individual non-consecutive images. With all of them selected press the B key and you should see confirmation that they have been added to RABBET FINAL.
Return to the book module and click on RABBET FINAL and you should see your extra images in the film strip. Click on add page and drag each image from the film strip up on to the new page. Be careful to click in the center of each filmstrip image and not one of the thumbnail icons.

  • How do I add photos from another collection to my saved Book?

    Hi,
In my lightroom library I have created a collection set called "Wedding". As I have 1000 photos from my wedding, within this Collection Set I have created 10 or more Collections to organise these photos (Ceremony, Reception, First Dance, etc.).
I have created a new 'Book' which as expected, has created a new Collection within my 'Wedding' collection set.
When I first create the book (before saving it) it seems like I can click on a page, then browse my Collections and add the photo that I desire to the page.
After I have saved the book, I can't so this. I want to work on my book later, and use my existing organisation of photos, and add photos to my books from these collections.
I know I am missing something basic (I am new to lightroom). I don't understand why I can't add a photo to my book after I have saved it.
Each time I click on one of my other collections, a new unsaved book appears in the main project window.
I have worked out that if I copy all my wedding photos into the new "Book" collection, then my photos are available for use - but this defeats the purpose of organising my photos into separate collections, and it doesn't seem like you can create a sub-collection within the Book project.
I also can't seem to find any documentation to explain this properly.
Any help would be apreciated - or if I coud be pointed to a good resource.
    Cheers,
    Mandy.

    Thanks for the response.
I saw these discussions previously, but not of them seem to answer my question (nor confirm that what I am trying to do cannot be done).
If I want to create a "Wedding Album" book, do I have to firstly use the Library module to drag ALL the photos I may want to use into my "Wedding Album" collection (saved book) ?
This seems annoying as I have already categorisied my 1000+ wedding photos into separate Collections using the Library (so that I can find the one I want easier).
It seems as though the Book module would function much better if you could create a book, choose a page that you want to add a photo to, then browse through your pre-configured collection sets & collections, and add photos to the book from the navigation panel on the left when you have the "Book" module open. (Rather than having to copy the photo first into the "Book" 's Collection, then adding it to the page that you want)
    Mandy.

  • No Photos in Saved Book

When I create a saved book in Lightroom 5 Book Module, the number of photos is listed to the right of the saved name in the Collections list, but there are no photos displayed in the Book itself.  If I leave the Book Module and return, there is no change, all I see is the standard startup book template with a few blank pages.  Any suggestions?

It sounds like I have a nearly identical problem but no number of reboots and cold boots have solved the problem. I am running LR5 in Win7. I spent the last 2 days building and refining a book with 115 images - 3 & 4 images per page. Everything was going well. Late yesterday I made a duplicate of the book. Then I started up my machine this morning and the book came up and showed the default startup and all formatting and text was gone. My filmstrip is showing all of the images and I can do an auto layout again and LRoom will format a the saved book with my auto layout preset but obviously none of the special formatting or text appears.
I tried setting up a new book from scratch with a different set of files, saved a duplicate of the book and everything looked normal to begin with but sooner or later it looses it's formatting completely and reverts to the default layout with no images or formatting. I have been trying all day to pinpoint exactly what causes this and duplicating the saved book seems to be the culprit but it is very inconsistent. Sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't but eventually it will cause all formatting and images to disappear from the saved book leaving me back at square one.

  • I cannot export my saved book to pdf or jpeg or blurb

i cannot export my saved book to pdf or jpeg or blurb. Nothing works. If i start a new book , then it works but i would have to redo the entire layout.
Anyone have the same problem or/and anyone could help?
    Thank you

Yes i do use LR4.3 .Idid upgrade to L4 from L3 , only because the book feature,to switch from blurb to PDF. I do use mostly my own images or combination of photo montage, but sometimes color backgrounds or lightroom graphics.
I just reinstalled all my backgrounds and it seems like to work now.No explaination of what went wron (or what is wrong) as i am used to lightroom .May the fact that i am tweeking the layout (using the print layout) or the padding feature quite a bit but that's what the software is supposed to do.

  • How can I edit lightroom 5 smart previews on mac book pro (mbp) when the lightroom 5 master image files are on my external hard drive is disconnected from the mbp

How can I edit lightroom 5 smart previews on mac book pro (mbp) when the lightroom 5 master image files are on my external hard drive is disconnected from the mbp? So far when I try to disconnect the external HD from the mbp, I get the following pop up window: The disk "external hard drive A" couldn't be ejected because "Lightroom" is using it. Quit that application and try to eject this disk again. When I do that and restart Lightroom 5, the Adobe Photoshop Lightroom - Select Catalog screen pops up but doesn't list my external hard drive A as a choice.
I've reviewed Adobe's Lightroom Help | Smart Previews Lightroom 5 web page and still haven't been able to figure what I'm doing wrong. Any help would be appreciated.

Your internal HDD. by default, is named 'Macintosh HD'. From what information you supplied, it looks like there is already a Lightroom catalog installed on you local (internal) HDD using the standard naming convention Adobe uses as well as a Lightroom catalog on your external drive which you created. To be sure of which catalog Lightroom is loading when it starts up, To do this, start Lightroom as you normally would. After it starts, select the Lightroom menu item, then select the Catalog Preferences item and finally, navigate to the General tab. The Location information will tell you exactly what catalog Lightroom is opening by default. This will likely be the Photography Mac Book Pro Versions catalog on your external HDD. Once that is confirmed, you are ready to proceed. As an additional test/verification, you can shut down Lightroom and, this time, start Lightroom while holding down the ALT/OPTION key. This will cause Lightroom to pause and display a screen which will allow you to chose a different catalog to open. Navigate to the /Users/[user name]/Pictures/Lightroom folder and select the Lightroom 5 Catalog.lrcat file. When Lightroom comes up, there should be no previews or folders as this catalog should be empty. Now you can be certain which catalog is being used and which catalog has all your data and you are ready to migrate your current catalog. Shut down Lightroom.
To migrate your current catalog, use Finder to locate your Photography Mac Book Pro Versions folder on your external drive. Select the folder and select COPY from the context menu. Next, use Finder to navigate to the /Users/[user name]/Pictures/Lightroom folder on you internal HDD. You can start at the Macintosh HD level and work your way down by opening each level (Macintosh HD/Users/[user name]/Pictures). Select the /Pictures folder and then select PASTE... from the context menu. When the COPY/PASTE is complete, you should see the following files on the Macintosh HD:
    Macintosh HD/Users/[user name]/Pictures/Lightroom/ and
Macintosh HD/Users/[user name]/Pictures/Photography Mac Book Pro Versions
The Macintosh HD/Users/[user name]/Pictures/Lightroom folder will contain the empty default catalog the Adobe created when Lightroom was installed and Macintosh HD/Users/[user name]/Pictures/Photography Mac Book Pro Versions will contain a copy of the catalog you created on your external HDD.
You are almost done now. Make sure your external drive is still attached for this step. Restart Lightroom using the ALT/OPTION key again. When the Select Catalog screen appears, select the Choose a Different Catalog button (lower left side). When you do, a Finder window will open to allow you to navigate to a catalog of your choosing. Navigate to Macintosh HD/Users/[user name]/Pictures/Photography Mac Book Pro Versions and select the file Photography Mac Book Pro Version.lrcat. This is the copy you just created. Select the Open button and Lightroom should start. You should see all of your previews and settings just as before. Also, in the left hand panel, all of your folder should show up and none of them should be dimmed and none of your previews should display a small exclamation point badge. Either a dimmed folder name or an exclamation point badge indicates that Lightroom can't find the associated image file. If everything looks good, go to the Lightroom menu, select Preferences and then select the General tab. Under Default Catalog, select an option to either load the LAST catalog opened or select the Users/[user name]/Pictures/Photography Mac Book Pro Versions catalog from the drop down. Shut down Lightroom and then restart it normally. This time, when Lightroom starts, you should be viewing the new copy of your catalog. You can confirm this by looking at the General tab on the Catalog Preferences screen (Lightroom/Catalog Preferences menu items). Shut down Lightroom once again and this time, eject your external drive before restarting. This time, your folders in the left hand panel will be dimmed but you should be able to work with your smart previews. If Lightroom should display a Select Catalog screen with the external drive detached, double check your settings as it indicates Lightroom is still looking at the copy of the catalog on the external drive rather than the new copy you made.
Finally, if you are seeing dimmed folders and/or exclamation point badges with the external drive attached, this indicates a problem. You can select any folder and select Update Folder Location from the context menu. This will allow you to navigate to the copy on the external drive and select it. Lightroom will then update the catalog (select to synchronize the content). This will not only clear the dimmed folder problem but also remove the exclamation point badges for all photos in that missing folder. However, it may indicate that not all went well with the copy of the catalog so make sure to verify all went well. You can use the Get Info option on the two folders. You should see the same number of files/folders for both the copy on the internal drive as well as on the external drive but you can't rely on the byte count because of the possibility of differences between the geometry of the two drives. Hope this all helps!

  • General Advice and Question on Saving Book Files

I am still relatively new to FrameMaker. I attended a one on one course 12 months ago for two days. When I attended this course I was totally oblivious to the features of FM, it was totally foreign software. I had looked through the User Guide and as part of the course received Classroom in a Book. I have not spent a lot of time on FM in the last 12 months as I still have to produce manuals in the old format. The changeover is a huge project.
I have searched this forum many times and found the answers I have needed to many of my questions and learnt so much that I had not fully understood.
I would just like to confirm now with the users of this forum that I am going about my project in converting to FrameMaker in the right way and I have a question on saving books etc.
I have Operator and Service manuals for four machines (with variations between each machine and then variations between each of those basic models). Parts of the Operator and Service manuals are interchangeable.
I want to be able to single source my material and I am setting up an Excel spreadsheet which will breakdown each section of both manuals. Once completed when a machine is ordered the Excel spreadsheet will produce the details of the files needed to complete a book (manual). There will still be work needed on the book files before the manual can be produced.
My files are double sided with each Chapter starting on the right hand page and I am using variables and conditional text. The manuals contain columns, graphics, tables etc.
I have done test runs and have managed to accomplish the layout in PDF that I want for the final manuals which will be printed. I am only working on four machines at this stage, once this is set up others will be added or I may have to set up another lot of single source files.
Am I on the right track?
My specific question is that currently I use master files for each machine which are updated as needed. These files are then saved to another folder and identified by a Serial Number and Customer. The serialised files are then saved to PDF. I would like to continue this process as in the future the manuals for that specific machine may need to be revised (i.e. Rev. 0 to Rev. 1 and so on).
So basically I have all my single source files from which I produce a book file and save it to an appropriate folder which identifies its Serial Number and Customer. I don’t know if I have missed something very simple but I want these serialised books to remain as is, I do not want them updated when I make a change to my single source documents. I want to be able to produce my manuals for any number of machines from my single source without changing the book files that have already produced a manual. Is this possible?
    I am using FrameMaker 7.2 b144.
I hope this posting provides a clear view of what I am trying to achieve.
Many thanks in advance for any advice and answers that are provided.
PS This is the first time I have ever posted to any forums.

It sounds like you want to be able to open the book files and print without updating...
This isn't the case. Each book will need to be updated before output.
The reason is that your pagecount (and thus any toc, index, and xref's) will be different in each book and thus will need to be  updated.
The books will still need a opening and updating prior to output, but you could easily (cheaply) script that process so that you could batch output the books.

They should show in the Purchased tab in the ibookstore in the iBooks app for re-downloading (re-downloading). If you updated to iOS 5.1.1 via your computer's iTunes were the books in your computer's iTunes library (did you do File > Transfer Purchases before updating) ? If the books weren't on your computer's iTunes then the update process wouldn't have been able to copy them back to your iPad after installing 5.1.1 on it.
