Lightroom Preferences Interface

Have never tried to change the colors (Shades) of the LR window until today.  Getting harder for me to read panels so tried to lighten the backgrounds.
I was unable to make any discernible change regardless of which gray or even white I chose.
Could you please explain the way it works or what I am doing wrong??
thank you,
Ed

Pete: thanks but I mislead you by my question.  I understood the workspace background ok .. it the panel print I am having a bit of a problem with.thank you for replying.  Just a retired hobbyist who is constantly trying to improve all phases from taking to LR to Photoshop, but have a long way to go.
Ian, you answered  .. just not what I hoped for.  I've posted a request for  Adobe consideration.  Would think others might also like the backgrounds a little lighter and the characters a little larger.  Your example shows exactly what I was referring to.
Today it seems black on black of vice versa is the standard.  As I have aged I need more contrast.  Little flashlights help with my cameras and other paraphernalia.  As a former Marine Corps fighter pilot we were required blindfolded to touch anything, anywhere, instantly ... I was a lot younger and spent a lot more time doing the same thing.  Same is true of my car.
Really appreciate yours and all the help available here in the forums,
Ed

  • Resetting (or 'Trashing') the Lightroom Preferences file

    Hi,
in an effort to make the edit-in option in LR work, I found instructions that I need to reset the preference file for LR. I followed the following directions, see below.
However, even with holding the option key down on my iMac, as directed, I cannot find the folder and file. I do not have a Library folder under my username, but only one under hard drive, and in there I can find com.adobe.photoshop files, but no LR file. Can anybody help me?

While troubleshooting, when possible, rename files instead of deleting them.
If possible, back up catalogs on a different hard disk or volume from the disk where your catalog is located. Try making hidden folders and files visible temporarily following the steps described here Quickly Show/Hide Hidden Files on Mac OS X Mavericks & Yosemite | Ian Lunn - Front End Developer, it applies to Mavericks but I think is also valid for Yosemite (but not 100% sure). Please don't use a external drive when hidden folders and files are visible as there might be a bug with LR5.7.1 on Yosemite when they are visible (not fully sure).
When you are done with the preferences, make hidden folders and files invisible again.

    Mac
The Photoshop Lightroom application is the Adobe Lightroom 2.app file, located in the Applications folder.
The preference file is the com.adobe.Lightroom2.plist file, located in the[username]/Library/Preferences folder.
The following Photoshop Lightroom database files are located in the[username]/Pictures/Lightroom folder:
Lightroom 2/3 Catalog.lrcat (the catalog itself)
Lightroom 2/3 Catalog.lrcat.lock (this file prevents you from overwriting data)
Lightroom 2/3 Catalog Previews.lrdata (the file that holds the preview data assigned to your photos)
    Windows XP
The Photoshop Lightroom application is the Lightroom.exe file, located in the Program Files/Adobe/Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2 folder.
Preferences are located in the Lightroom 2 Preferences.agprefs file, located in the Documents and Settings/[username]/Application Data/Adobe/Lightroom/Preferences folder.
The Photoshop Lightroom database file, Lightroom 2/3 Catalog.lrcat, is located in the Documents and Settings/[username]/My Documents/My Pictures/Lightroom folder:

    Lightroom 1.x
This Adobe  TechNote lists the locations for the Photoshop Lightroom 1.x  Preference and Database/Catalog files. The location information provided in the Technote is summarised below:
    Mac
    >The preference file is the com.adobe.Lightroom.plist file, located in the [username]/Library/Preferences folder.
    >The following Photoshop Lightroom database files are located in the [username]/Pictures/Lightroom folder:
    * Lightroom Database.lrdb(the Lr 1.0 database)or the Lightroom Catalog.lrcat (Lightroom 1.1 and higher)
    * Lightroom Database.lrdb.lock (the file that prevents data from being overwritten inadvertently)
    * Lightroom Previews.lrdata (the file that holds the preview data assigned to your photos)
    Windows:
    >Preferences are located in the Lightroom Preferences.agprefs file, located in the Documents and Settings/[username]/Application Data/Adobe/Lightroom/Preferences folder.
    >The following Photoshop Lightroom database file is located in the Documents and Settings/[username]/My Documents/My Pictures/Lightroom folder:

    >Registration information is located in the Windows registry, in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Adobe/Lightroom/1.0/Registration key folder for Lr 1.x
Make sure you don't delete any of the database/catalog files. The only file you might need to delete or remove is the preference file.
Note: database files were created by Lightroom version 1.0 and use the extension  lrdb. Subsequent versions use catalog files for the same purpose and have the extension  lrcat

If you don't mind losing some if not all of the work you have done already start a new catalog.
    To keep all existing work:
Make sure that the copied NEF files on the external have the same folder structure as previous.
Copy the Lr4 catalog to the external and launch it on the laptop by double clicking it. A copy of the catalog will get upgraded for Lr5. This will retain all your work although you will need to reconnect the Folders in the Catalog by pointing them to the new drive.
You can keep th Catalog on the EHD or move it to the Laptop.....

  • Why icons  and text on photoshop are very small, (i checked edit preferences interface)

why icons  and text on photoshop are very small, (i checked edit>preferences>interface)

    In summary:
    1.  You have a "high dpi" screen.  The advantages to this are that things that are painted on the screen in a reasonable size will be made up of a lot of pixels, and will be very crisp and clean looking.
    2.  Photoshop has not yet embraced "high dpi" operation.  It's complex to do so, in that Adobe has to rewrite the software for all the controls on the screen to be able to use more pixels.  That's not to say it's impossible, it's actually fairly straightforward for a given control - but there are a HUGE number of controls in many, many different places in the application.
Adobe has said they're working on it, and have made some noise about Microsoft not having supplied everything they need to succeed at the full reimplementation.  But the current version does not have the ability to size itself up to be a reasonable size on your "high dpi" display.
That said, if you really, really want Photoshop to be "magnified up" to where all the controls (AND the pixels in the image you're editing) are much larger on your display, there is a workaround/hack...  It's a bit geeky and requires registry editing, and one day when Photoshop really does gain "high dpi" support you'll need to remove the hack, but here it is:

I can't vouch for its performance, but it might make it usable for you in the interim.

  • How do I preserve my preferences, interface personalisations (icon positions, and so) ???

How do I preserve my preferences, interface personalisations (icon positions, and so) ?, so that when I reinstall my Windows XP Pro and Windows 7, I just had to copy or apply the correspondent(s) file(s), without having to reconfigure all newly.
I've posted this in the reader forum, but I get no answer, as I need assistance for reader, acrobat, and photoshop, It comes to me, that may be it was posted in the wrong place. Hope get some reply this time, as I need to reinstall my OS.
    Thanks in advance.

Ooh, thank you Test for the quick reply
If you want a definite answer (but don't be at all hopeful), you need to contact Adobe.
That's the problem, I can't get any answer from them, for this I count on the ingenious ideas users may have...
It isn't very likely to be in files these days, but buried somewhere deep in the registry.
I was thinking something like that, because I've done a deep search in the file explorer, with no success.
As I'm a little clumsy, have you any idea, how and where I may find the so wanted information ?
    Thank you again.

  • Can I share my lightroom preferences with a co-worker

Hi, I am currently using the Photography CC license (single user) and I am looking for a way to have a sharing solution, so my co-worker can acces my Lightroom files and work in the Lightroom catalog/archive simultaneously.
    Thanks for brainstorming with me.
    Kind regards,
    Yvonne van Dalen

    @vavavonne

When you say "share", do you really mean simultaneous access of the same preference file, or are you talking about one-at-a-time, without a song-n'-dance in between, or..
I mean, you shouldn't be accessing the same preference file at the same time, e.g. via networked location (you could, if you knew how, but, well, don't..). That said, you could periodically copy it from some "master" location to a "slave" location and share that way.
But I recommend caution when using the same preference file on a different system - preference file is used by Lightroom proper *and* all your plugins, and there is NO restriction to what data may be stored there, which means system-dependent data will sometimes be stored there. How well Lr or a plugin will cope if data created for one system is being used on another, depends.. For example, Lr stores catalog backup location in preference file. If same backup location does not exist on a system, it will resort to a default location instead - nothing particularly bad about that, unless user A stored their location which user B tried to use, and then user B stored their location which screwed A next time.. - thus the reason I recommend master/slave relationship, so one user's copy is the master and the other user has to make do (or make requests..).

  • Lightroom Photoshop Interface

My Lightroom (LR) to Photoshop (PS) Picture interface used to work, but doesn't now.  Used to be, I'd click on the picture in LR, PS would open with the picture ready for edit.  Now LR opens PS without the picture.  I am using Windows 8.1 with PS CC 20140608.r.58 and LR 5.6 Build 974614.  Suggestions? Problem solved with a Photoshop CC 2014 upgrade several days following this posting.  Thanks for reading and making this suggestion ..... Ha Ha.

In Lightroom, during import you have an option to a) either copy the files or b) add at current location.
    In case a) you'll have 4 GB, in case b) only 2GB.

  • Delete Lightroom preference file

Windows 7 64 bit. Currently with a Photographer CC bundle. Every time I open LR 5.5 and now 5.6 it acts as though its the first time and displays the tips dialog and changes my custom identity plate back to the original. On exit it prompts to backup even though I have it set to backup once a week on exit. My question is should I try to delete the preference file and try again or should I try a uninstall re install. How do you delete the preference file? I don't want to make things worse.

Deleting the preference file is the first and easiest thing to try -- it won't make things any worse:
Preference and other file locations in Lightroom 5
Reinstalling is the second thing to try.

  • CS5 Very small toolbar- Tried Preferences, Interface, Large and it doesn't work.

I have Win 7 and just got the CS5 Premium installed.  Everything is fine in the other programs but Photoshop's toolbar and swatch pallette are so small that it is very hard to work with.  The menu bar(file, edit, etc) all across the top look like they are are a 2 pt. font. They are also very hard to read.  I tried setting it to large in the preferences but it didn'tchange anything.  Any other suggestions?

trying to read the menus text etc is very difficult unless I move closer like 18 inches from the screen.  I do not have bad eyesight.
Nice sounding monitor setup, but I wonder if it's got problems.  I have to differ with you a bit in your assessment...
The 3008 WFP has about 100 dpi pixel resolution, which is not different from what I see on my LCD monitors.
With 100 dpi monitors and good eyesight you should not be needing to increase the size of the UI elements nor moving closer to see them clearly - they are QUITE easy to see when they are sharply rendered.  Either your monitors are not crisply displaying your pixels, or your eyesight is worse than you think - or both.
My normal viewing distance is about 28 to 30 inches (I can just touch my screen with an oustretched arm), and I have NO problems seeing the Photoshop UI elements at this size.  In fact, I can easily see them out to 4 feet or more - until my glasses get beyond their usable limit.
I'm not criticising you here, not at all, but trying to provide some observations that could help you.
    1.  You need to critically check your monitor hardware setup.  It's possible the UI elements are not being rendered as sharply on your system as they should be.  With LCD monitors you should see every pixel sharply rendered at 100% size.  Even tiny 1 pixel dots on the tops of lower case i characters should be crisply visible.  Do not settle for less!
    2.  I suggest you have an eye exam.  You can, if it turns out your eyes are a little weak, get your optometrist (e.g., Lenscrafters) to create a special pair of glasses specifically for computer use.  Ask for Computer Glasses, and go in armed with your normal viewing distance.  That's what I've done, and being able to see small detail on the computer is WAY better than not being able to see them.  UI elements aside, your WORK will be better for it.
Hope this helps in the interim while Adobe (hopefully) works up a more accessible new version for the future.

No you use the low resolution external display for your Photoshop Palettes and the High Resolution Laptop LCD for you image window
Two displays are better then one  I been doing that since 2002 where my ThinkPad 133DPI IPS LCD was used for Photoshop Image windows and my low resolution external display user for the palettes.   I even create an Photoshop Action that split images in and scale the parts for the displays two different DPI resolution and different aspect ratios one was a 4:3 the other a 16:9 aspect ratio. When the image was tiled as wall paper it a single size image both displays were 9" high. the inafe file looked strange even the side were swapped because Windows tiles from display 1 no mater what side display 2 is on.
Had other configurations they looked like these all displayed like the top image

  • How can I save my interface preference in InDesign CC?

I'm working in InDesign CC and I prefer to have my interface set at "Light" instead of the new dark interface that is the default. I made sure no documents were open, went to Edit/Preferences/Interface and selected my choice. But whenever I start InDesign (say, each morning when I get to work), I has gone back to default dark interface. It saves my other preference changes and other changes to the workspace, but not the choice of interface. Everyone at my office prefers the light interface so we're wondering if there's a way to make InDesign save this preference. Thanks!

The other preferences I changed seem to have saved just fine. I don't change a ton of stuff...just the units and now the interface.
