Lightroom, PS, Bridge, Raw, --I have all of these, do I need Lightroom?

With all of these programs, why do I need to get involved with Lightroom for my photos? What makes Lightroom different?

I have both Photoshop and Lightroom.  I use Lightroom with all my photos and use Photoshop with some of them for things that LR cannot do.

  • Does Lightroom make Bridge obsolete?

I'm new to Lightroom, and really like the simplicity of Bridge.  I find Lightroom very confusing and with duplicate features of Photoshop.  I particularly find the "catalog" feature very confusing.  Bridge is very intuitive and the Explorer metaphor works like one would expect.  I can manage my images perfectly, with no confusion.  I like the combination of Bridge, ACR, and Photoshop CS5.  Why would I need Lightroom?  PS: I don't need "tethering" feature of LR.  One more question:  I wonder if in the future Adobe will get rid of Bridge (because it's free) and make people buy LR.  ???

I like the simplicity of Bridge, and how everything I do with files (managing folders, deleting/moving files, etc) works exactly like in Windows Explorer.  However, once I understand LR, and the way I can catalog images and search images, I may find that I use both--Bridge for truly managing the images and folders, and LR for cataloging images for rapid search.  I plan on giving LR the benefit of the doubt and working with it before categorically rejecting it.

LR might be confusing at first, particularly if one doesn't that LR is not a browser-type program but a data base program. It's data base being the catalog.LR is far superior than Bridge for image management. You willbe able to apreciate this only after you have dived deep into LR. But, Bridge still remains useful just because it's a browser based program. It will display everything that is on the hard drive - as far as image files are concerned, whereas LR displays only what has been imported. Also, Bridge displays image files that are not supported in LR. But after 5 years of working with LR I have to say, it's a fantastic program (despite some flaws) and I could not do the work I'm doing without LR. WW

  • Lightroom to Camera Raw

I cannot open raw files from Lightroom in Camera Raw when I choose "edit with photoshop" from the LIghtroom menu. They simply open in photoshop itself and not Camera Raw. I am using Photoshop CS6 (latest upgrade) and LIghtroom 4 (Latest upgrade) on a Mac. Any help appreciated

Thanks for your replies. Mostly you have highlighted my problem. I have just switched to Photoshop and LR. Previously I was using Aperture 3. I do prefer the Camera Raw operation over the LR editing as it seems both quicker on my Mac and I find the interface easier to use.
I am hoping to use LR for its database and tracking. Ido backup to a seperate HD from the one I use for LR itself. The attaraction for me in opening a RAW file in Camera Raw before going to Ps6 is that sometimes I don't need to do the latter - but either way LR promises to keep track of editing and changes much the same as Aperture did.
Not sure if this is totally logical but I had hoped that the connection between LR and Camera Raw/Photoshop would be a direct and simple one. In fact I thought I read somewhere that choosing a raw file in LR and then "edit in Photoshop" should automatically open the file in Camera Raw and then progress on to Photoshop as its next step.  Perhaps I am expecting too much?  I am new to the forum and Ps6/LR but keen to learn.
Thanks everyone for your help  Cheers

Is it wise to keep the Nikon camera files "DSC's"  after downloading them and converting to DNG files via Adobe converter for lightroom use. In other words do the DNG files have all the raw data I would ever need in processing or should I save the camera's DSC files?

DNG files do not contain some metadata supplied by the camera, which can be used by the manufacturer's software. Thus, if you don't keep the original Raw photo, you will lose this information.
If your 1000% sure you're never going to use the manufacturer's software, then this isn't a problem. But who can be sure what software you will be using 10 years from now?

heidie22, dj_paige has a very good point there. I would not through away the NEF files; I would archive them to a external drive.
By the way, I am assuming that converting RAW files to DNG is a decision you have made and not an accident.

Have you seen this type of problem before? I think it could be a serious issue for anyone in a similar position.
No; but then, I've not had occasion to use TDM. I've been using firerwire drives for over 10 years, both FW400 and FW800, with no issues except a bit of instability using a B&W G3 machine.
TDM should be safe. Using cautious, manual copying of files from the Target machine to the Host machine should not result in unexpected loss of files or damage to the Target drive's directories. It should behave exactly the same as if it were an external (to the Host) firewire drive.
    •  I don't suppose there is anything I can do to 'put back' lost items from a separate Time Machine drive which has an up to date backup on it.
There is probably a way to do that - seems to me that's one of the reasons for a Time Machine volume.
On the other hand, if the Time Machine volume is rigidly linked to the now-absent OS on the original drive, there may be no way to effectively access the files in the TM archive.
I know that using a cloned drive would work well in this instance.
I have no experience with Time Machine, so perhaps someone who has will chime in with suggestions.
With the machine in TDM with the other machine, have you tried running Disk Utility to see if you can effect repairs to the drive?

Unfortunately no - Photos use extensions and the vendor (adobe) will have to implement the extension to allow external edits in PS or PSE
For now you must export the photo, edit and then import - not great but a work arond
And you can continue to use iPhoto until Photos meets your needs - launch it in your applications folder - if you need assistance on this see Why won't my iPhotos open?

  • Lightroom 5.6 - photos in one of my collections have all been corrupted - they all become resized after I exported them

I have recently exported two photo collections. However, one of them seems to have been corrupted. All the photos have been resized after I exported them to lightroom.adobe.com. In fact, whenever I try to open any of the images in Lightroom again they have all been resized (or cropped). Is there anyway of recovering the original edits I made. I can re-adjust the images one by one but there are over 1000!
    Thanks
    Mike

    Hi dj-paige
    Thanks for replying.
I guess "corrupted" isn't the correct term to use. The problem is that I have been editing photos in Lightroom (well over a 1,000) and then put them in two collections, one called Birds (300+ images) and the other Dragonflies (1000+ images). I then uploaded these collections to Adobe-Lightroom so that I can view them online. However, when I view the Dragonfly collection, either online or in Lightroom, they have all changed, having all been cropped beyond recognition. What I want to know is, 1) has anyone experienced this problem before and 2) is there a way of recovering the photos with all the edits that I have painstakingly made over the past few weeks. I can go through the photos one by one and change the crop so that they appear fine but there are over a 1,000 images and it would take several weeks to go through them again.
    Cheers
    Mike

    Antonia,
Probably your monitor profile is corrupt.
If you're on Windows, see here:
    http://www.lightroomforums.net/showthread.php?14070-How-to-assign-an-sRGB-ICC-Profile-to-y our-monitor-%28Windows%29
If you're on a Mac, you'll need to try something similar to set your monitor profile to sRGB. NOTE: this is merely a temporary fix. You need to acquire a hardware calibrator (decent ones can be had for around $100) and calibrate your monitor with it.
