Lightroom PSE6 Import

I wish to move from Photoshop Elements 6 to Lightroom (1.3.1) running on Windows Vista. However I can't get Lightroom to import the PSE6 catalog. From what I can make out PSE6 uses a different catalog format from PSE5 and LR doesn't seem to recognise this.
I find it hard to believe that that the latest version of LR can't import from the latest version of PSE. Does anyone know how to make this work (even if it involves exporting the PSE6 catalog first)
Note: I've 20,000+ photo's in PSE6 and make use of the Album's feature to sort them, hence the need to import the catalog rather than simply importing the files
Regards
Mike

i have a real problem with your advice .
i took it and when i opened LR all my images had gone !!!!
the good side of this is that my back up was up to date.
any other suggestions ?>????????

Same here. I've never had trouble with this function before.
It opens the Photoshop application with all the menus/windows, but it never opens the actual image I chose to work on.
I'm on a Mac, using OS X Yosemite, 10.10.1  Lightroom is version 5.7  Photoshop is CS5, version 12.0.4
FWIW, I also can't automate>Photomerge ... . Makes me think Photoshop, not Lightroom, is all wacky. I tried dumping PS preferences

  • Lightroom 4 importing causing program to crash.

Lightroom 4 will not import files. Windows 7 pop-up states; "there is a problem with this program that is preventing it from running correctly will check for solution". "Windows failed to find a solution must shut down program now".
This prevents the import page from loading or working and no images can be imported using usb or SATA connections. Was able to use computer's built-in card-reader to read from Sd and compact cards, those were able to run in the import window only because of preference setting. "when a Memory card is installed import files" (preference-setting).  Any other means of importing files, the out-come is the program crashing and being shut down. All other functions outside the import menu seem to be working. Deleting all catalogs and then using the default catalog setting,  failed to clear issue.
System info: Windows 7 64-bit, Intel i7 cpu, 16 gigs of ram, 4 one terabyte hard-drives.
Solutions tried. Removing Lightroom 4, all catalogs, then running defrag, registry cleaner, before attempting to re-installing lightroom 4.  Removing lightroom 4 and installing lightroom 3.6 fails to fix issue. Removing all Lightroom products from hardrive,Including the windows program folder, windows programs data folder. Then rebooting re-running defrag, registry cleaner and re-installing lightroom 4 fails to fix importing issue. No way to contact support and links to user group fail to take me to correct user group. Question with the lead as lightroom 4 importing causes program to crash. Takes me to everything but lightroom solutions!  Now this takes me to photoshop user group which has nothing to do with lightroom. With lightroom 4 in the question itself, I get everything but lightroom solutions!

Camera raw is built into Lightroom. It is the engine that makes the corrections within an image. You might not see as a seperate program, like earlier versions of Lightroom. Or having to launch it in a new window to work in camera raw. In version 4 of Lightroom it was made seamless and built into Lightroom.
Lightroom 4 was installed in the admin log-in window. I have all useage rights to any file lightroom creates or adjusts. I am thinking that the Photoshop CS6 beta created some working problem within Lightroom 4. Now that the beta-test program is over, I think the problem is a result of removing Photoshop's last build, before the public beta was released. I do hope, Adobe is working on a solution for people experiencing importing problems with Lightroom 4. I am just grabbing at straws here, trying to find something that will work. I think the problem will go away once computer has the new camera raw build 7.0 that ships in Photoshop CS6. With so many versions of camera raw installed on the computer, I think Lightroom is having issues as a result. Let's hope a patch is in the works, Lightroom 4 is useless if importing files doesn't work correctly.
B&H photo is taking pre-orders for the creative suites, right now. The only way to get support is by purchasing a subscription. Otherwise it is a $35.00 per issue fee. So, I am not sure of what upgrade path I will take. Not loving the cloud at all, with this year of Hackers, I seriously doubt that any cloud will prove to be safe to use. Why would, I want to post my hard work to a cloud where anyone can steal it? But that is a different topic.
For right now the only way to import is by creating an empty folder on the same hard-drive that Lightroom resides on. Setting up auto-import in Lightroom Pref. file to check that empty folder. Folder has to be empty to set up. Then dragging image files into that empty folder. I discovered that Lightroom 4 will not open or look in sub-folders for images. Which means you lose keeping a day's worth of shooting seperate from other folders. Where Lightroom version 3.6 you could. There was a second auto-import that worked, with my built-in memory-card reader. Where in the Lightroom pref.file you can tell Lightroom to auto-import, when a memory-card is detected. ( this is the least viable option, because more memory card become damaged removing and reinstalling them). These were the only two methods, I could get images into Lightroom 4 and prevent Lightroom from crashing.  Might have to go back to using Nikon NX to import my images and using Bridge to catalog them.

  • Questions about using Lightroom to import my pictures..

    Hi.
My main use for Lightroom is picture import, as it does a superb job on arranging my pictures at import time, but I have a few questions that maybe you guys can answer.
First and foremost, my camera has that orientation data, but somehow the image file that ends up on my hard drive is always vertical (i.e. 3264x2448) even though there are pictures that are shot horizontal (i.e. 2448x3264). Is Lightroom capable of importing the pictures already rotated, or is there a setting that allows that? (Note that the pictures INSIDE Lightroom are shown rotated, but I'm talking about the JPG file stored in my hard drive)
Second, how can I set up Windows Vista to display Lightroom as an option to import pictures when I insert my card or connect my camera?
    Thanks..

Let me see if I understand your rotation issue. It seems that you shoot jpeg (using which camera?) and that the images show correctly rotated in Lightroom but not in another (unspecified) application.
Does the software that came with the camera show the jpeg properly rotated? (I'm certain that it does.) What software doesn't show proper rotation? Windows Explorer? You would not want Lightroom to physically rotate the image on disk since that would violate it's non-destructive editing rule.
Lightroom has a preference setting that allows the import dialog to be shown when a memory card is detected. Avoid importing directly from the camera and use a card reader.

  • Lightroom 4 importing cases program to crash

There are no warnings other than a dislog box in windows 7 to pop up and say there is a problem we will let you know when a solution becomes available. Then Lightroom closes.
No error code or other identifers. Unistalling and reinstalling lightroom 4 fails to clear problem. Deleting all catalogs has no effect. Program is worthless, if it cannot import image files!
Not liking new lack of support at Adobe!
Running windows 7 64-bit with intel i7 cpu 16 gigs of ram and 4 one terabyte hard-drives.

I found usb and hard-drive connections will cause importing to fail and the program to crash as stated above.
Adding Memory card to computer's card reader will allow an import.
But all stored image files on back-up drive will not import and I get the crashing of the program everytime!
Nothing seems to clear up the problem, so the software is worthless at this point.

  • Lightroom CC Import sees CF Card in reader but does not see any images, cannot import anything

I have installed Lightroom CC.  It seems to work but if I connect a card reader with a CF card, while Lightroom sees the card, it sees no images.  I have to copy the files to a hard disk and import from there.  How do I fix this annoying problem?

    Hi drchevalier,
You mean, you are able to import those files, if moved to hard drive but not able to view them when importing directly from the CF Card? Please attach a screenshot.
If so, might be an issue with the card. Did you try reformatting the card in the camera itself and check? If not, might want to try that.
Also, make sure your camera is in the Camera Raw plug-in | Supported cameras list. Else, you might not see it in Lr.

EDIT: Sorry, did not see your reply. Glad to hear that the issue got resolved.

    Ms. Kost,
I am an event photographer and new to Lightroom.  I just got Lightroom 4 and am just starting to watch your videos.  This first one demonstrates your great step by step teaching method that's very informative and I'll be watching more.
As an event shooter, I usually shoot with two cameras, each with a different lens.  I would very much like Lightroom to be able to SORT the files from both cameras during the Import phase and order them by the TIME that the shots were taken, or Chronologically, rather than to sort each group of files from each camera individually.  Since I do my editing and presenting in chronological order, I would like them sorted as if I shot them all with one camera.  My current method is to import to Lightroom after first using Bridge to import to the main SSD drive on my Macbook Pro, although I can change this method if need be.
Is this possible? I didn't notice this option explained in this video if it exists.
    Thanks in advance!

I don't have a card slot on my Macbook pro  it's about 4-5 years old. I have a Canon EOS 500. When i want to import i use a cable that plugs from the camera into a USB port downloading in either iPhoto o Photoshop. Can I do this also with lightroom or do I need to get a card adapter?

  • Troubles with Lightroom 3 import

My lightroom will not let me import. I upload all of my pictures to iPhoto then export them to a picture file (keeping all in original formant of RAW) usually it just lets me pick my folder and import but now it refuses, I pick the pics and it says that it is unable "Could not copy file to requested location". I've also tried to import directly from the card and it comes up with a similar message. What is wrong? I have photos that needed edited!
    Thanks

    Thanks
I think that's your hint. There is something wrong with the location you're trying to copy to, perhaps a lack of authorization. What happens if you copy the images to your desired location and then import to LR, telling the program that you want to leave the images where they are?
You didn't say what version of Lightroom you're using, nor what operating system it's running under, and those pieces of information might help somebody help you.

  • Lightroom 4 import problem

Recently, when I import photos in a folder into Lightroom 4 it adds the folder under the Macintosh HD hard drive instead of under the parent folder/sub-folder structure in User/Pictures. This happens whether I move the folder at the same time as import or whether I move the folder first and then just import by adding the photos to the catalog from the existing folder structure.
The destination folder should be users/[user name]/pictures/[user name] library. But when I import, it creates a new parent folder with the same path instead of dropping the folder into the existing parent folder.
When I try to move the folder within Lightroom 4 by dragging and dropping to its proper destination a pop up window  says a folder already exists - ie the one from which I am trying to import, and it won't let me move the folder as a result.
This is a recent problem. Before everything worked fine. I am running Mac 10.7.5.
    Any suggestions much appreciated.

Just a note.  I got the Windows updates last night.  I was able to import this morning so I don't know if the updates are the problem or not.  Is there anything else that you changed on your system?

  • Lightroom CC import error

I've just updated lightroom within CC. when I tried to import pictures, it opened Lightroom 5, so I have since deleted 5. Now however when I insert an SD card, I get a message that says 'E:\application not found'. I have - 1. ensured that lightroom 6 is set in the control panel >auto run for pictures  2. gone to preferences in lightroom and ticked open import dialogue box when card is inserted.
when I open lightroom and then choose 'import, it works fine - it is just the auto start of lightroom that is not working. I tried also changing the auto run option to where it gives you options so I could choose lightroom manually, but I still get the application not found message once I click on lightroom. .

I did a search in regedit for "Lightroom 6.0 64" and it came up under Lightroom6BetaAutoPlayHandler64.  I removed the 64 off the end of the "InvokeProgID" and the 6.0 64 off the end of the "Provider" keys restarted my computer and Lightroom operates as it should.  Also in autoplay under memory card it reads "Lightroom".
I wouldn't mess with the registry unless you are familiar with editing it and do the necessary backup safeguards.

  • New to Lightroom, problem importing raw CR2 files.

I am new to Lightroom and am having trouble importing my CR2 raw photo files. In the "import" section I select my SD card that contains the raw image files. All .jpeg files on the card show up as thumbnails but the CR2 files show "preview not available for this file." I select one of the CR2 thumbnails anyway, select a destination folder on my external hard drive and click "import." A window pops up that says, "this file is not recognized by the raw support format in Lightroom." I'm using Lightroom 4.4 and am working with a Windows Vista operating system (on an old, junky laptop). My camera is a Canon 70D and am shooting in RAW+JPEG. I also downloaded the Adobe .DNG converter 6.3 to try to convert the files before importing them into Lightroom and it is also not recognizing and importing my CR2 files. Not sure what to do at this point. Any suggestions?

I would recommend downloading DNG Converter 8.2 which is compatible with Vista.
The latest version 8.6 requires W7 or W8

  • Aperture to Lightroom Export/Import question

For those who have done the Aperture - Lightroom move (for whatever reason), did you use the built-in Aperture to Lightroom importer that I understand is part of of LR5 or did you use a third-party exporter like Aperture Exporter?
What were your reasons for your choice? My Aperture library is around 68,000 photos, but only around 3,000 show up when I check as "adjusted", so my main concern is trying to maintain some semblance of my folder structure and things like keywords, ratings, etc.
    Thanks. Steve

I tried the plug-in (got a trial version of LR5) and after making sure that my entire Aperture Library was referenced, started it - and made sure to tell it to leave the files where they were! To my dismay (1) a lot of photos that I would have expected to be imported came back with errors - even though the ORF Olympus RAW file was a supported camera and more importantly (2) a lot of my photos that were in particular folders, now found themselves in folders based upon the date the photo was either taken or imported into Aperture. Now I read about this - but it is only supposed to happen if you had a managed library and then LR would move the image files into folders based upon dates.
My library had about 68,000 images and after about 6 hours it was up to 30% or so, so I just clicked on DONE to see how it was handling my folder structure.
I am now trying with an application called Aperture Exporter (they have a trial version, but it has limitations on how many photos it will import) and it seems to be handling the export much better. It is keeping my folder structure intact, keeping my metadata (mainly keywords) and any photo that had adjustments in Aperture applied it gives you the option of exporting the original RAW/JPEG file along with a copy of the adjusted one - either as a JPEG or TIFF. Only "issue" would be that you have to have enough hard drive space to duplicate - at least initially - your entire photo library. Don't see an issue to do the export one folder or project at a time (at least not in the demo version).

  • Lightroom error importing large files

I use Lightroom 4.4 on a Mac with OS 10.9.5.
While trying to import images to Lightroom I get, for some big ones, an error message that they are too big. According http://help.adobe.com/en_US/lightroom/using/WS42D207D7-B290-4baa-A896-AB71965BF24B.html files with 65kx65k pixels should be OK. But there is e.g. a JPEG with only 16633x 32650 pixels (113MB) among the refused files (I tried a TIFF-version of it, which does not work either).
There is no problem to handle these JPEGs with Photoshop (CS6) or ImageMagick (even with 65.280 (=256x255) pixels per side ...  I hope that the 65k limit in LR is also <2^{16} and not 65000).
Is there any solution for that? I would be willing to upgrade to LR5 but according the specifications it should work with LR4.

    a JPEG with only 16633x 32650 pixels
The LR 4 and 5 Help say, "Lightroom does not support ... files with dimensions greater than 65,000 pixels per side or larger than 512 megapixels."
Your file exceeds the last requirement of 512 megapixels.   16633 x 32650 = 543,067,450, which is either 543 megapixels or 518 megapixels, depending on which definition you use.
