Lightroom publishing to hard drive

I have a slight problem, not with publishing, but deleting already published files.
Have 3 published hard disk, which reside on 3 different PC's. Publishing is no problem. However, if I decided to delete photos from my catalogue and use the option "remove from service", I have to make sure that all 3 PC's are available, else I get an error message.
I can delete from the published folders, but I would have to find the same picture on each, to be able to delete. The photos are then deleted the next time I publish.
Is there a way where I can remove the photos from service, without have the other PC's available?

Here is one idea, assuming you have the original image files somewhere else too.., you can build smart previews (in Lightroom 5+) then delete the laptop copy (using your OS I mean, not Lightroom) without interfering with published status.
Of course, have backups first, and take caution, and try just one at first, and...
To be clear: this is not an "ordained" way to do things, so not recommended unless you are savvy computer/file-wise..

  • Lightroom publish to hard drive - virtual AND master losing all development changes upon export

LR 4.3, 59th reinstall (i lost count), standard HP pc setup, triple-core.
    workflow:
i develop the master to the point where i want to diverge, then create a virtual copy, finish developing and publish to hard drive. Have done this a million times, but since most recent reinstall (for a plethora of reasons, but mostly difficulties with performance and performance - and oh! performance... ;-), it publishes only the undeveloped original. I've tried publishing the master, just to see what happens, and ditto: only the unedited raw file is displaying in my published folder on the hard-drive.
i am careful to select 'Show PUBLISHED folder on hard-drive' from the right-click drop-down on the published image in the hard-drive publishing module, which in lightroom DOES reflect all changes, but the image on the hard-drive is the original raw file, renamed to the publish-service's specs.
any ideas? i'm fresh out... MUCH appreciated. Having to do an extra export into ps6 (which does reflect changes), and re-save for no other reason than to preserve development is time-consuming and destructive to my workflow, which is darned complicated enough as it is!
    thank you!

Could you explain why you have selected "original" as the format, rather than some form of processed file such as TIFF or JPG? In other words, for what purpose are you making duplicates of your Raw files when Publishing? If that is not what you wanted to do, then you are Publishing the wrong type of file.
Exporting "as original" when the LR image concerned is a virtual copy, would be expected to have the same outcome as when the LR image is a master copy, since both versions have the same kind of original - literally share the same physical original - and that would be accordingly Published out as a new copy, when "original" is your file type. Then LR metadata would be written as a sidecar (.xmp) file next to that (or embedded in that, for say a DNG or JPG).
Also, what means are you using to view the exported Raw files in the Published folder? Unless this is Adobe .xmp compatible software - which means: Bridge/ACR, or else importing into a LR Catalog -  it will fail to interpret the LR edits since these will mean nothing to that program. If, for example, this is Raw support built into the operating system's file browser, then what you are seeing is the original camera-embedded JPG preview - which your work within LR has simply left alone.

  • Publish to hard drive mirroring folder structure

    Hello,
The publish to hard drive feature was one of my most anticipated additions in LR3. I use this to maintain a backup of all my images with the edits baked in, which offers a great level of security.
My only disappointment is that it flattens the folder structure. Backing up an entire catalogue to a single folder is less than convenient, so I ended up creating multiple publish folders in order to keep the file counts reasonable.
But the ideal would be the ability for the publish feature to mirror the folder structure, creating a backup that is organised just how I like it.
    Kind regards,
    Tom

You seem to be using the wrong tool for the job of backing up, why not use ChronoSync on Mac or Clone on PC to back up your folders [and structure] to a location of your choosing independently of LR? They can also back up any folders like your preferences or catalogue not just your images and do so according to a schedule that you designate.
Both are very easy to use and can back up single folders or entire hard drives or anything in between. I also find them very handy for location work as these programmes always keep my backup ext. HD in sync with my main ext HD without my having to think about it.

  • Publishing to Hard Drive in Particular Folders

    Hi there,
Sooo, I've been trying to find a answer to this without luck. So I'm hoping someone can help me out.
I have Publish to Hard Drive set up to get photos onto my iPad for my jewelry company. I need the photos to come up in different folders- rings, bracelets etc. So I have smart collections set up do do this. Took me forever to go through 1000's of photos and attribute keywords to all of them, but it is done! So they are in separate smart collections for rings, bracelets, etc. The first time I published these into my iMac's Pictures folder, all the separate collections went into separate folders with respective names but in one big folder titled Untitled Import.
However, when I tried to view these separate folders on my iPad because they were folders in a folder, they would only view in one big mess as opposed to separate easy-to-view folders. So I pulled them out of the main folder in the Pictures folder on my computer and, Voila! easy to view.
Here's where the trouble starts. Now, when I make changes to the photos in the Smart Collections in LR and publish it will only publish to that same original Folder-in-a-Folder situation, each an every time. So really, it doesn't sync, just adds new folders.
I have no idea what the work around is to this so I'm appealing to the masses. What can I do?
    Thanks!

Disclaimer: I was not able to follow all of that.
That said, consider TreeSync Publisher (a free plugin I wrote) which supports exporting into folders which match collection set tree - collections in said tree can be smart..
So for example, you could set up a collection set:
    * Jewelry Company (set):
         * Rings (smart coll)
         * Bracelets (smart coll)
    etc.
Then point TreeSync Publisher to said collection set and export (or publish) - you'll get export tree:
    Jewelry Company (folder)
         Rings (subfolder)
         Bracelets (subfolder)
i.e. exported folder tree will match "source" (mirrored) collection set tree.
Jeffrey Friedl also has a publish service plugin which may serve your needs: Collection Publisher.
Let me know outside the forum if you need help with any of my plugin(s).

  • How to reinstall lightroom 4 after hard drive crash

My hard drive recently crashed and I have an all new one now.  My comp is running Mavericks and I need to reinstall Lightroom 4 (that was the latest version I was using, and I downloaded it, no cd).  How do I reinstall it??  When I go to "My Orders," the download option is not available.

I believe this might of worked after all. I did like you said and double clicked on the My Catalog file. PSA and it just put in the timeline and dates on the pictures but had a ? mark and no picture. I then chose to dowload files from the My pictures folder that the downloader was directed to for each download. It seems to restoring the photo's and putting them with the tags and all. I am so relieved because I had 37,500 pictures that would of been untagged and out of order. I learned my lesson to do a backup more frequently! Thanks for your help. If I would want to update to PSE 9 is it compatible with windows XP?

  • Download Lightroom on New Hard Drive Win 7 64 Bit Error Can't Use Original Serial Number

    Hello
I am attempting to reinstall Lightroom 5 on a new hard drive after my old one crashed.
I am using the original download file which I have recovered from the old hard drive.
When entering my serial number for Lightroom I am receiving a message saying "This is an upgrade serial number.  The serial number from your previous version of Lightroom is required."
I did not upgrade from an earlier version of Lightroom; I purchased the full version of Lightroom 5 and I only have one serial number.  I was wondering if you knew what the problem might be here.
    Thanks

    Hi Davidbopper,
The full version serial number should not throw up this message.
I would request you to go through the link below and check in case you might have purchased any previous version serial key.

  • Transferring Lightroom 4 from Hard Drive to Computer

When I initially downloaded Lightroom 4 my desktop could not handle the amount of space the program/library took up so I began running Lightroom from an external hard drive. However, I now have a laptop that can handle running Lightroom.
Upon trying to copy/paste all of the Lightroom files from the external hard drive onto my laptop, my Lightroom library now says that all of the photos are "missing".
Ideally, I'd like to have my Lightroom software and library running from my laptop because I am in need of a larger external hard drive to hold all of my exported photos.
    Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

  • Organize files from Lightroom Mobile on Hard Drive

Hi! I am working on refining my workflow for getting images from my iPhone into Lightroom. One approach I'm considering is to use Lightroom Mobile's Camera Roll auto-import feature, since it works pretty consistently well, and would allow me to start rating and sorting images on either my iPhone or iPad, and do heavier editing when I get back to the desktop. My idea is I'd have an "Inbox" where images are coming in from the iPhone (either that I've shot with the iPhone itself, or transferred to the Camera Roll from an Eye-Fi card -- but that's neither here nor there), and I could sort them into other collections when I get back to the desktop.
Quick background note: I'm coming from Aperture, where I had referenced files on an external hard drive, neatly organized in folders by year > month > day, and named in <yyyy-mm-dd> - at - <hh-mm-ss>.ext format, easily searchable via the filesystem, if need be (yeah, I read The DAM Book).
My problem with this Lightroom Mobile workflow so far, is that once the images get into Lightroom on the desktop, the image files are buried somewhere in the Mobile Downloads.lrdata folder, eating up space on my internal hard drive. I'd love it if I could have them stashed away on my external drive, where all my other photos live.
So - my question is, does anyone have suggestions for how to go about moving them to that external drive, respecting the organizational structure I've got in place (folder + file naming convention)? They don't necessarily have to stay synced with Lightroom Mobile once I've started organizing inside of Lightroom on the desktop, although that would be nice. Or is this a ridiculous and convoluted way of getting images into Lightroom on the desktop? How are other people handling this kind of scenario? I'm not averse to something script-y, like AppleScript or maybe a Hazel recipe, but I could use some suggestions for getting started in the right direction.
As an aside, this all started for me when a) I bit the bullet and switched to Lightroom at the beginning of the year (the writing was on the wall, way before Apple announced they were killing it), and b) I started shooting with an Eye-Fi card in my Fuji X100S. Unless I'm shooting RAW (which I rarely do with that camera), it's so easy to sync images wirelessly over to my phone, and seems redundant to then import images off of the card into Lightroom.
Anyway, thanks for any suggestions you might have.

I want to take all of the photos off of my computer and put them on an external hard drive.  If I am in lightroom and plug in my external hard drive, if i just move all the folders over to the external hard drive does take them off of my comptuer?
Also, what I want to do is make one folder for each calender year along with the edits made to the photos.  So, If I back up my catolog and move it over with the photos, that means that all of the edits I made on those photos will stay with those photos?
With having all my photos off the computer, if I wanted to reopen a folder from my external hard drive through lightroom, will they will automatically open with all the edits still done to them?
Point 1: yes Lightroom will move them from your computer to the external. However I wouldn't recommend doing this, I would copy the files from the computer to the external using your OS and when you have verified the copy is ok and you have "Updated the folder location" in Lightroom then you can delete the folders from your computer.
Point 2: You can do this manually in Lightroom using the Sort options to achieve the older you want or craete a new catalog and import from your current one and at the import stage move the files to new folders with date order.
Point 3: yes it will but you will not be able to "work" the files that are on the offline drive unless you have generated Smart Previews.

    Hello,
I want to re-install LIGHTROOM 5 on one of my 2  Macbook computers because it had a hard drive crash.
The computer is repared, so I tried to re-install LIGHTROOM.
The only solution that I found available online, was to download LR5 through Creative Cloud.

How should I do to put my license number on the LR5 that I downloaded from the CC ?
My fear is that I will have to pay (in one month) for a product I already bought...

  • How do I reinstall lightroom after computer hard drive had to be wiped?

I have a Mac desktop, it crashed over the weekend and the hard drive had to be wiped.  I need to know how I go about reinstalling Lightroom.  I don't think I have an install disk.

I haven't tried plugging it in directly. At this point in time, I am awaiting disks for iPhoto and iMovie installation. I also found out that I will have to load all my photos and videos and such from the backup disks I have created through the years. Blech. I knew this would be time consuming. Being as MobileMe closes in June, I'm sure glad I started migrating early...
Thank you for your help. I may just leave this discussion open in case I have more questions after I get the disks and the new external hard drive I ordered (which is temporarily out of stock.)

  • Lightroom and my hard drive

I am about to go crazy here.  I have my photos in lightroom under a certain name on my hard drive but I have noticed that my photos are in another file under another name on my hard drive.  When I import I put them in one file but when I export they go to another file.  For example when I import they are under "c" drive, user, my name.  When they export the go under desktop, my name, etc.  Does anyone know how to easily fix this?  I guess when I loaded Lightroom I set it up this way and didn't realize it.
Thanks for any help.  And hopefully this makes sense.

When you import files you choose what location to import them to and any hard drive on your machine. If they are already on your machine you can choose to leave them where they are. All in the import dialog. The help system gives a fuller explanation of the options on import, click F1 whilst in LR and read it.
Once reference in the catalog LR does not change these files in any way, it leaves them where you put them unless you tell it otherwise.
When you export a image after making changes in LR, LR creates a new file (it renders a version of the original file with the changes made by you in LR). It will send this to any location you choose in the export dialog. Once again this is explain more fully in the rather useful for new users (and some experienced ones a=s well) help files.

  • Recovering deleted hard drive files with Lightroom?

I accidentally deleted some files from my SD card and hard drive thinking I had them backed up, turns out they weren't. However, the photos still show up in my Lightroom collections, is there any way I can save the files that are on Lightroom to my hard drive? I'm running Lightroom 5 on a mac, if that helps.

    Follow these steps
Find, download and install and run an "undelete utility" program. There are free ones available for Windows, I don't know if there are free ones available for Mac. Run this on your hard disk and also on your camera card. If you are going to do this, then do so immediately; do not perform other tasks on your computer.
If that doesn't work, use a plug-in called Preview Exporter which will find and extract the low resolution previews created by Lightroom.
In the future, you want to make sure that every photo AND your Lightroom catalog file is properly backed up to a different disk than the disk where the original is located.
