Lightroom running on PC and Laptop

I am running Lr on two computers.  The image files are stored on a shared network drive.  Each copy of Lr has its own catalog.  Lightroom on my laptop is configured to always write sidecar XMP files.  Lr on my desktop is not configured to write sidecar files.  I have converted all my raw files to dng.  My understanding is that now that my files are in dng format, the Lr “develop” setting are written into the dng files (and in the case of work done on my laptop, the associated sidecar file). Forget about jpg, tif, and psd files.  I am only interested is how the two copies of Lr interact with the dng files on my network drive.  I have read Martin Evening’s Lr 4 book over and over concerning metadata “develop” data, in particular, his section concerning  “Where is the truth?”.  Reading Martin’s book, I am tempted to believe that the Lr catalog “develop” metadata on each computer will be selected despite the fact the “develop” metadata was changed (both in the dng file and, if the changes were made on my laptop, the sidecar file) by the other computer.  Is that correct?  Or, if I make changes to the image on one computer, will Lr alert me to the changes on the other computer?  If it does alert me to the changes, can I disregard the update and keep different “develop” settings of the same image file based on the differences between the Lr catalogs on each machine?

For the changes you make on the laptop to make it to the desktop, you'll need to tell LR on the desktop machine to read the metadata from those images. Yes, you'll be given a warning that the image metadata doesn't match the catalogue metadata.
That said, I wouldn't do it that way. There are just too many ways that you can mess yourself up. Two catalogues for one set of images is one catalogue too many.
A much simpler, more bulletproof scheme would be to have both your catalogue and images on an external drive and plug it into the machine you want to do your work on. Or keep your images on the network and just have the catalogue on the external. Or pass the catalogue to the machine where you want to do your work.

  • Using lightroom on desktop PC and laptop computer

    When I'm out in the field, I take my laptop and download images to my laptop, triage photos, assign ratings and categories. When I get back home, I want to transfer this information to my main PC which has a giant, backed up harddrive. I also occaisionally want to take a subset of my photos from my main PC out to show someone via my laptop.
    Does lightroom address this scenario?
    No, I don't want to use the "unsupported" sync toy because I want to export portions of my database to my laptop, do some work on my laptop, then transfer the work from my laptop back to my desktop PC.
    From reading some other posts, sounds like this is not supported. How many other people need this functionality? Is there a web site where I can post a feature request?

    There is an earlier thread, don't remember which. Describing simple way.
    You store the Inages in the exact same folder tree structure on the laptop as on the home storage. you 'triage' on the laptop with auto export to XMP on (in Prefs). at home you move the folders to the storage place on the drive there using LR drag and drop.
    Then import them on the main machine from the storage space.
    Meanwhile you have all your images referenced on the lap top from the same storage space so that you can show and see them even when away. (Thay show red in the folder list when off line to the laptop.)
    The home computer will see all your work except collections, Virtual Copies and stacks.

    My computer is saying it can't find the file 'iTunes64.msi' when I try to update or redownload iTunes how do I fix this? I've tried just about everything I can think of. I am using a dell laptop running windows 7 and have tried changing the file location to run the update in all of my iTunes files as well as when I've tried reinstalling it.

    For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
    The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.
    The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, need to revert to an older version or want to try the iTunes for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) release as a workaround for installation or performance issues, or compatibility with QuickTime or third party software.
    Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there are also links to backup and recovery advice should it be needed.

  • Working with Lightroom between a Windows desktop and laptop

    Please forgive me if there appears to be an obvious answer to this question.  I'm sure a lot of it has to do with work flows.
    I have both a Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit desktop and laptop both with Adobe CC (Photoshop CC 2014 & Lightroom 5.6) installed.
    I always treat my desktop as my "Main" machine as it holds ALL of my 10,000 odd images all stor ed in a folder structure.
    As a very new Lightroom user, I'm slowly starting to bring all these images into a LR catalogue folder by folder, but this will take some time.
    My actual question is how can I edit a photo on my laptop in LR but ensure that the edited image is stored back in my Lightroom Catalogue on my desktop?   I hope this question makes sense.
    I don't store all my images up onto the cloud seeing we're talking just over 100GB.  It's not like LR Mobile where one can select an image or collection to Sync and my understanding is that it appears on your Lightroom Mobile; I'm an android person and so yes,  am STILL waiting for an android version of Lightroom Mobile
    Thank you all for your patience with a newbie LR user

    Do the editing on the laptop, then use the Lightroom command File->Export as Catalog, transfer the resulting files to the desktop, use the Lightroom command File->Import from Another Catalog

  • Problems with running Photoshop CS6 and Bridge with Lightroom 4 also on the same PC

    I was running Photoshop and Bridge, then purchased Lightroom 4. Before installingt 4 I had no problems with Bridge, but since installing 4 all of the photo's that were held in bridge are now gone, but they are in Lightroom. With Lightroom, you are able to edit photos out of Lightroom and into Photoshop when necessary, save and close and it automatically changed the Lightroom picture.
    I have two PC's, one has Bridge on it (this one) and the other without, but both have both editing prgrams installed. On the other PC I can switch between Lightroom and Photoshop with no problems, but when I try to switch with this PC, the one with Bridge installed, it will open Photoshop, but the photo will not transfer. If I close Photoshop program and go back to Lightroom, it will tell me that the picture could not be transfered to Photoshop because it would not launch. If I close that message window, it will then launch Photoshop and the picture transferes over allowing me to edit and save as normal.
    My question is; does anyone know if Lightroom and Bridge should run side by side, or should I delete Bridge from this PC and see what happens. Bridge is just a holder and organizer of photos, wherease Lightroom does the same, but also has post editing capabilities. The two programs seem redundant, but if your running Photoshop, it's hard to get files out of Lightroom. It seems that you need to open Lightroom first, then you can view and chose a photo to work on, then move it back and forth between the two programs. This seems to make Bridge redundant.
    Thanks for any help or suggestions.

    Hi, Yes, but that actually wasn't the problem. I start out in Lightroom,
    then move to Photoshop if I have something that can't be fixed in
    Lightroom. The problem was that when I tried to edit, out of Lightroom and
    into Photoshop, I was getting an error message that Lightroom couldn't
    prepare files for transfer because Photoshop wouldn't open. But, it had
    opened, the picture just wouldn't transfer. If I closed Photoshop,
    Lightroom would try again and it would open and transfer the second time. I
    ended up going to the Adobe help, chat line, and they looked into my PC and
    located the problem, it's now working fine. Thanks to everyone for your
    inputs. Most appreciated.

    I have Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Lightroom on my MacBook Pro laptop. I bought an iMac and I'd like to move my installations to the larger display desktop for editing purposes. How can I go about transferring them?

    I have the same question. It seems that Adobe is almost impossible to contact (I ended up here at the forums to ask the same question).
    I will never buy another Adobe product again if I can get another program to replace it. If this is customer service then it is NON EXISTENT!
    I notice that your question has not been answered and why should you have to get the information from a forum? I know of no other company that makes you do this for simple product information.
    NOT HAPPY with this version of arrogant customer service (nor am I happy about renting Photoshop products into the future - it is just a money grab in my opinion). I will be voting with my feet and going elsewhere in future.

    How old is the MacBook Pro?  AirPlay is only supported on 2011 and newer models, due to the requirements it has in hardware for graphics acceleration.

    Hi. My MacBook pro 15" got stolen in lebanon. It run on IOSX and doesn't have Icloud. Is it possible to retrieve the laptop by it's serial number and specification. Any answer is helpful cause it contains many important informations and documents

    If you didn't install any tracking software on it, then no, you can't track it. Report the loss to the police and to your insurer. The chances that you will ever see the machine again range from nil to negligible. If you're smart, you have backup copies of your documents.

    Using Windows Explorer, navigate to the folder that contains your catalog it's probably located in Pictures\Lightroom. In that folder you will find another folder with the extension .lrdata. You need to delete that folder and its contents, then start Lightroom again. And new previews folder will be created automatically, and you should be able to start using Lightroom normally.

    Ok, well you'll need to do something like this. Now this part is a little dependent on your database server:
           try {
                Class.forName("org.gjt.mm.mysql.Driver").newInstance();
                Connection c = DriverManager.getConnection(
                                                           "jdbc:mysql://{database-server}/{database-name}:3306?user={username}&password={password}");
                Statement Stmt = c.createStatement();
                int count = Stmt.executeUpdate(cmd);
                if(count>0) {
                     System.out.println("count: " + count);
            } catch (Exception e) {
                e.printStackTrace();
        }That was some sample code for a MySQL database.
    Note that the applet can only contact the server that is was loaded from, so you might want to do a getCodeBase() or something like that to get the server address.
    Hope this is helpful.

  • Lightroom 2 is up and running - what do I do with Lightroom 1?

    Mi Lightroom 2 is up and successfully running. I am now confident that I do not wish to go back to V 1.4, which I did not uninstall upon installing V 2. The question is: can I now get rid of V1.4? How? Any risk I should beware of? I'm a Mac user, running OS 10.5.5 on a Power Mac G5 with 3GB RAM.
    Thank you.
    Sergio Burani

    You *could* remove the 1.4 (1.4.1, hopefully) program... but you may wish to wait a while to make "doubly-sure" LR2 won't throw a wrench in your gears... put LR2 "through it paces" in all aspects. I see posts fromm many users who "suddenly" have fairly major issues in LR2 after it has been running "OK" for some time.
    As for HOW to remove the program from a Mac and any Mac-specific issues... well, I'm PC...
    Me personally... I'm waiting for an update before going to LR2. If I had gone to LR2 early on, I would NOT have removed LR1 (yet).
    If you have your LR 1.4.1 install saved, and backup your 1.4.1 catalog, just in case... then it is probably safe to remove it (just be sure you can get back to it (LR1)... until LR2 issues are ironed out in an update, or two ("holds breath" ;)).

    What seems to be working for many users (myself included) is to sign out of CC and then sign back in.  After signing back in, LR will run.
