Lightroom Sharpening & Exporting

Two questions:
1.  When I look at an image in the Library view, has the Sharpening settings been applied in that view or is that purely direct from the Camera RAW?  In other words, when I switch to the Develop view and open Detail - are those default settings only seen in the Develop or are they actually being shown in the Library view as the defaults?
2.  On the Library view, I see two buttons marked "Import" and "Export" - is there a way to get the "Export" button to show up in the Develop view or do I always have to go to the top menu and do a "File/Export" in that view?  Seems like having a big "Export" button in the Develop view would be nice.
Thanks

In the Develop Module <Import> and <Export> are available via >File > Import Photos or Export.

  • Lightroom Sharpening

    Hi,
It is advised that some sharpening is required when sending images to press. I have been using Photoshop High Pass sharpening with Edge Mask mostly. Recently I have noticed that there is a sharpening option when exporting images from PS Lightroom. I wonder if there is any advantage in Lightroom sharpening compared to Photoshop Layer Blending Sharpening. I am asking this question from those who are experienced in offset printing.

Yes this is a very good article and has been out since the issue of version 1.1 which had quite a few improvements/changes from version 1.0, while 1.2/3/3.1 were mainly bug fixes.
I hope there will be a v 1.3.2 bug fix which clears up the printing problems for Leopard and Vista, and download issues direct from cameras before a paid update.

I would like to use slideshow in lightroom to export my video as a full screen 1920x1080 video with text overlays.  I am using text overlay in lightroom as it reads from the metadata that is easy for me to input in the library screen.  When i export from lightroom slideshow and choose the 1920x1080 resolution the end product is a very small video in the middle of a black background.  i have double checked and do not have any borders turned on.  Another option would be to export from the library but lr mogrify does not seem to put text overlays on video either.  Any input would be welcome.

I dont understand anything you said in your post.
Do you have a specific question about video production?
The forums are for individual technical or creative issues that users have with video production. I am sur someone will be able to help you, but and to get a response it is best to ask a specific question.
Is this about a technical problem you have or something about setting up a web site? If its the latter this is the wrong forum.

  • Lightroom 5 exporting wrong file sizes?

I am having trouble with Lightroom 5 exporting images at incorrect file sizes. For example, if I use my export preset for images with long edge 2500 pixels and maximum size 1000k it is exporting images at 1500-2500k.
Is anyone else experiencing this? I am wondering if it is a bug.
    Thanks

I never had a problem with it in LR4. The example I gave was one of many options I tried. At the other end I asked it to produce smaller files (eg 1500pixels long edge) with a 1000k maximum and I could only get them to output at around 160k.
I have since realised that I neglected to mention that I was using LR/Mogrify2 plug in to add a text graphic to the images. I experimented with turning that option off and I was able to produce a 2500px long edge file at 996k. As soon as I turn that option on again the file ouptuts at 1600k (where I have specified at 1000k limit).
This was never a problem with LR4 so there is a conflict or a bug somewhere.
Is anyone else using a LR / Mogrify 2 plug in and experiencing unpredictable results? I have the option to use LR / Mogrify 2's version of ImageMagick checked.
    Message was edited by: Shipp
So I just did further testing. It seems that LR5 cannot control the maximum file size when working with Lr / Mogrify 2. If I ask the plug in to resize the image and control the maximum file size I can produce a file with long edge 2500pix, 1000k maximum size and the text graphic with no problem at all, as I used to be able to do with LR4. I will contact the plug in developer and see if they are aware of this.

  • I use Adobe lightroom to export images to Facebook - I am now getting error message related to this process address not understood- how to correct?

I am using Win & Home edition / Mozilla Firefox on my HP laptop. On Oct 8 I used Lightroom to export images to Facebook. Now when I try to repeat this, authentication fails as The address wasn't understood
Firefox doesn't know how to open this address, because one of the following protocols (lightroom) isn't associated with any program or is not allowed in this context.
The export process was working, but isn't now. I have ben having problems with Firefox - I wasn't able to retain the settings for opening with my own Homepage (kept going back to Firefox default. So I have done a reset. Seems that this has somehow disrupted the authentication process. Can you help please.

I just dropped into the forums to see if other people were getting the DVD burning verification error (Error code 0x80020063). I've been holding off on the Tiger to Leopard upgrade until very recently. All of my must-have apps were anecdotally stable and I was under the impression that 10.5 was too. Apparently reliable DVD burning is Tiger only, at least on my systems.
We've been burning Taiyo Yuden DVD's almost daily with Tiger with incredibly low failure rates. After what seemed to be a smooth upgrade of a Mac Pro tower & 2 MacBook Pro laptops (one is a Core Duo and the other is a Core 2 Duo) I've spent the entire afternoon troubleshooting until I ended up here. Some searching on the board leads me to conclude that this will be a bigger headache than I imagined.
I've done all the obvious stuff (varied the burn speed, moved the files to a different drive, reset PRAM & SMC, used a different account, deleted finder.plist, tried repairing the system with DU on the Leopard install disc and then I tried burning on different computers with different media). What I'm finding is that over 50% of my DVD's are throwing the error code during verification across 3 different models all running Leopard 10.5.2. CD burning seems to work as before (but we don't use this as much so ?). I saw that some people had posted that closing the finder window helped, but that didn't improve my overall failure rate. The DVD's appear (indentical byte size and item numbers) to be burned correctly and usable, but I need to be sure so I can't trust them.
We need reliable DVD burning for our business and this is a real problem. I was going to trudge over to the Apple store, but it doesn't sound like there's a real fix yet.

  • Modify Lightroom 3 export process

I want to modify the standard Lightroom 3 export process - I want exported images to be placed in folders named from the collections that are being exported.
Can I do this without writing a complete plugin - which would be hard work and error prone? Ideally I'd like to add an option  to the 'File Naming -> custom ' section of the export dialog.

In the end, what I wanted to do couldn't be done in Lightroom. Here's the hoop I had to jump through to do what I needed to do.
Lightroom doens't allow the use of a collection name in a custom filename in the export process, but it does allow lots of other attributes. I pulled down the SQLite interface library source code and constructed a dll that would work with Microsoft Visual Studio 10, and then built myself a C++ program that walked a Lightroom collection tree (well, one level of it) in the Lightroom SQLite database, and set the "Headline" field to be the same as the collection name. I chose this field because I don't use it for anything else. I can now incorporate this field into a custom filename and it all comes out lovely.
It really didn't need to be so hard. Couldn't Adobe make their export processes just a little more open? This process is completely buried in compiled code; it's their way or the highway.

  • Lightroom 3 Export to JPEG issue ( please help) (photo attached)

    Hello,
I have been going crazy trying to solve this issue and can't find a solution. I am using Lightroom 3.4.1 on a Mac running 10.6.7. In Lightroom I am editing raw images from a Canon 7D. I tweak and adjust the images to my liking but when I export them as a JPEG at full quality using color space sRGB my jpegs do not look like my adjusted photos in Lightroom. The biggest missing factor is all my "detail" adjustments. Sharpening ect. The colors are slightly less vibrant but the huge issue is the sharpening I do that disappears. Can anyone help me with this? I will supply an example below. On the left is the jpeg and on the right is the grab from Lightroom. I am viewing the jpegs in preview and don't have photoshop. Thanks in advance for any help!

When you export from Lightroom and you do not select the resize option, you will get the full resolution from your original image. This contains far more pixels than your screen can display as displays are very low resolution devices (typically only around 100 ppi). When you open the resultant jpeg in an image viewer, it will have to downscale from that. Usually many times. This necessarily introduces blur and the result will strongly depend on the chosen scaling algorithm. Lightroom uses a fairly good one to downscale and it shows you a preview of a properly output sharpened image at the size you are looking at. Preview uses a particularly bad one. In preview if you want the screen pixels to correspond to the image pixels, you need to hit apple-0 (or use the view menu and select "actual size"). In Safari and Firefox, you need to click on the image to zoom in to actual pixels.
Your comment also makes me realize that you do not really understand the sharpening in Lightroom. The detail tools in Develop are meant to optimize what is called capture sharpening. These should NOT be used to optimize sharpness at the fit view level, but only at the 1:1 view level. They operate basically on the image to correct for image blur that comes from the sensor's antialias filter and for a small amount of lens blur (say when you are diffraction limited owing to use of large f-numbers). Do not zoom out and play with the detail setting. Zoom into 1:1 on certain areas and optimize the sharpening. There are many tutorials on the web that explain this. Then when you go to output your image, you need to apply another sharpening, called output sharpening, at the final size, in order to correct for blur introduced by the output medium such as a printer or a display and by rescaling the image. The print panel has this built in. In the export panel, the options are in the lower tabs. You need to rescale the image to your final size (for example, a 533x800 pixel image is typical for a good web sized image). Then also apply the correct output sharpening in the tab below it. Typical would be to sharpen for screen at a standard amount. I showed some comparisons on this around the LR 2 timeframe here: http://lagemaat.blogspot.com/2008/08/on-output-sharpening.html The output sharpening has improved by quite a bit by now from those examples, but they show the general idea.
    Hope this helps.

  • Lightroom PSD export inconsistencies and other quirks...

We are  a  professional imaging organization,  photoshop and lightroom experts (well, at least to our clients we are ..LOL)     We have been battling two very troublesome problems they seem to have been present in every version of LR3 we've used and its getting to the point where its costing us a lot of time so we'de like to address  it if we can.    I suspect its in the  code,  but perhaps its something more obvious...
For starters, here is our workflow:   1>  Import to DNG,  2 > Adjust  3>  Export as PSD ProphotoRGB
We then do our creative work on the images and  use layered PSD files for our intermediate archives (DNG are the originals as shot).  We use Photoshop to size, sharpen and export to final sized JPG  for agency submission.
    That said,
Problem #1>    When we  open the PSD files in photoshop (after exporting from LR3)   they are ALWAYS  dimmer, in fact,  we have to go into levels on each and every image and bring the far right slider over to where the  histogram curve starts so that we can recover the luminance.  In other words, if you are looking at the levels histogram in Photoshop,  there is a flat spot on the right hand side.  We end up moving the slider over to pick up the low edge of the "bell curve".      In some cases, this flat spot is severe.       NOT GOOD, we lose shadow detail doing this and quite honestly its  real PITA in terms of time wasted.
We notice in general, that even within the same color space, images do not look the same in Photoshop as they did in Lightroom.    That is an issue, they should at least look very close.
Problem #2>   When applying an Auto Tone (in develop)  to an image initially  we understand what its doing - setting white and black points -   but in just about  every case,  it applies WAY TOO MUCH contrast.   Again, we always have to slide the contrast slider over  to bring it within our tastes.    We wrote a preset to zero the contrast  but we should not have to do that ?   Is there a way of shutting the contrast off in Auto Tone ?    Its very annoying...
So anyway, we love LR3, but those two issues are severely limiting our workflow...     any ideas, hints or other suggestions ??
    Thanks,
    Mark

I agree with Jeff. Other forum members who have posted with this issue have had a corrupt or incompatible monitor profile. Issues that can cause this are hard drive file corruption, defective calibration puck device, and using monitor calibration software that creates ICC v4 monitor profiles. LR has issues using ICC v4 profiles and it is suggested to always use ICC v2.

  • How can I get Lightroom to export my edit to a jpeg that looks the same ?

    Hi everyone,
I can't get my jpeg export to look the same as it looks in lightroom after edit.
The jpeg isn't that different but still, way too much for me.
I did use sRVB, 100% no scaling etc... but it seems the export won't take "all" of my noise reduction correction..
This is a portrait shot in lowww light, and the raw file was rather crappy. Eventhough I was really happy with my smooth final edit but I can't get my jpeg to look as clean.. please someone help meee !
    Regards,

What infos can I give you all to help me sort this problem out ?
    export : quality 100%
                 sRVB
                 no scaling
In lightroom my image is just clean whereas after export, I can notice some artifacts or "moire", and it feels like the noise reduction/sharpen tool doesnt apply its correction as it should.. but it still does a bit bc it's not as if I turned it off completly...
    This is driving me crazy
I'm about to install RC3 and try with it...

  • Sharpening export workflow question

I have a sharpening workflow question. Say I have pictures from a portrait session I just finished. I have to send 10 pictures the client ordered to a print lab and I also will make some small facebook sized pictures and upload them to my business facebook page. The level of sharpening needed for large prints (I upload to print lab as RGB JPEGS) and sharpening needed for the very small sRGB facebook-sized pictures is different. In Lightroom I have the option to set the sharpening on export and have a bunch of presets that alter the export size, color space, sharpening, etc(WHCC print lab, facebook, Client CD, etc). I don't see how to do that in Aperture. I see they have the option if you have a printer, but not on normal export.
For those of you that have to export batches of pictures in multiple different sizes (with different levels of sharpening), what is your workflow? I could use some photoshop droplets/actions after Aperture export but I was hoping there was a way to avoid the extra step. Am I overlooking an export feature? The BorderFX plug-in looks like the only other option.
Thank you in advance for time and help!

The thing is guys - Once a file is sized down it WILL lose sharpening - what we are doing is sharpening the full size RAW file or rather what the full size output would be like. Once we export a version sized down it will lose some of the 'bite'. LR has sharpening options on 'output' which is not only smart but a necessity. Adobe realizes that output for screen needs another sharpen. Apple either doesn't know or didn't bother. It makes ANY output for screen less than best.
Bear in mind that there seem to be two separate issues going on here - sharpening adjustments not being applied on export, and resizing.
As far as resizing is concerned, Aperture appears to use something roughly equivalent to Photoshop's Bicubic Sharper setting. Because of this I've never had much problem with Aperture's exports when used for the web, but obviously everyone's taste for sharpening differs which is why an option for output sharpening would be good.
Sharpening adjustments not being applied on export is a separate issue and should be reported via the feedback form ASAP by everyone who is experiencing the bug.
Now printing is another animal - I wouldn't print directly from RAW in aperture either if I'm printing small. Again, LR beats Aperture here as well since they include output sharpening for print.
Aperture has had output sharpening for printing since 2.0 came out (unless it in was 1.5). In A3 you need to turn on 'More Options' and scroll down, I can't remember where it is in A2. I don't know how effective it is as I print via a lab, but it's there and it's been there for a long time...

  • Lightroom 3 exporting issue: exported JPGs come out with much more noise than original edited files

    Hi all,
My first post here so nice to meet everyone. I've been having some issues with exporting in Lightroom recently. It appeared to happen quite out of the blue. Sometimes when I export my edited .cr2 files as jpgs (in srgb), at a good quality (no less than 85), some of resulting jpgs seem to have exposure higher and/or a horribly large increase in the amount of visable noise. It seems many of the photos which this occurs in have pretty high settings for fill light, but even still, the noise is not visable in lightroom while editing the metadata linked .cr2.
I thought it might be the problem that I'm viewing the final exported jpgs in preview, but I also tried adding them back into the catalog and they look just as off. I just upgraded to 3.3, but it seems to be having the same issue. If anyone can please help, it would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks

No sharpening at all during my export, Ian. Sometimes I sharpen for screen at a standard strength, but I turned it off when I started seeing the extra artifacts but the results of the exports remains basically the same with or without sharpening.
However when I import it seems my photos already have some sharpening on them in the develop module. The settings there are sharpening = 25, radius = 1, Detail = 25, masking = 0. I honestly rarely mess with the sharpening, so I guess I skipped over those settings during the countless hours I have worked with LR! But I assume those are normal post import numbers, correct? I never apply development settings during import, that's why I say that. Thanks for keeping up the conversation and brainstorming Ian! Anyone else also free to chime in.

  • Lightroom 3  Exporting

I have Lightroom 3 and untill this last week it has been working fine. But now the Export function has completly stopped. The import work ok, and I start the Export function go through the menue options and it appears to start but gains no progress. After a long time windows notifies me that lightroom has stopped operating correctly and closes the program. Is there a fix for this or does anyone know what to do?

LIghtroom is not exporting my changes!

maxed out LUMINANCE just to see if there was a big difference

Are you saying that LR is not exporting all of your changes (Exposure, Contrast, White Balance, ...) or is not exporting noise reduction and possibly sharpening changes?
