Lightroom slower when GPU acceleration is enabled

My graphics card is OpenGL compatible and it is shown in the preferences under performance.
When the GPU setting is turned on my develop module is extremely slow. Turning it off is faster and more like LR 5 performance.
All the hype about GPU acceleration and in reality is slows me down.
I've also noticed then if you have an image open and then open the preferences windows and toggle the GPU setting on and off, the image changes.
When I say changes, I mean the image becomes lighter or darker as if the exposure or whites/blacks is being changed.

I agree with Adamnz. I have a slightly older system but using CC 6 is like going back to the early releases of 5.x when the clone tool was jerking around the screen.
Painting with a brush and the mask showing makes the lag time visible.
Jerky tool movements... like trying to paint with Parkinson's.
Screen blackouts while refreshing images.
Slow screen refreshes between images.
CPU usage slightly higher (60%) with GPU enabled
But since this version created a "New and Improved" catalog I can't (i don't think) go back to 5.x...
BTW, I have been waiting for a call back from support for an hour when the stated call back time was 25 to 30 minutes... Not Good.
Here are my specs in case Adobe is listening....

  • Playback and Rendering issues when GPU acceleration is enabled

I'm using the new MacPro with dual AMD FirePro D300. When I enable GPU Acceleration (Open CL) I can no longer play through an entire sequence. It specifically has issues playing through any layered graphics or titles, but seems to play with those disabled. I have tried having "Composite In Linear Color" enabled and disabled, and neither seemed to make a difference. It's the same deal when rendering. If I have titles, and use GPU Acceleration it jumbles clips, cuts to black or static, all manner of weirdness. Is there something I'm missing?
An example of what playback looks like if I have titles and GPU Acceleration enabled.

This computer thing seems complicated enough that if your system works better with GPU accel off, that's you best performance. I understand they've been trying to sort out these sorts of issues but there's so many dang variables, and trying to build software that interlinks with other complicated software is something no other NLE or Grading program does. That throws even more kinks into the list.

  • Resolution loss in multicam when GPU acceleration enabled

    Hello all,
Strange multicam problem here. I know others besides me have struggled with multicam playback resolution, but at least on the surface, this particular problem seems counter-intuitive.
When I enable GPU acceleration (I have a GTX 650 Ti BOOST), playback resolution is decreased in the multi-cam monitor. With CS5.5, this was extremely noticeable; now in CC, it's less apparent, but still detectable. The footage will blur slightly when playback begins, and then sharpen again when paused. If I disable GPU acceleration, playback resolution in the multicam-monitor is the same as the paused resolution.
Is this a bug, or something that should be expected? I can live with this, but it'd be nice not to have to disable GPU acceleration for multi-cam, and then re-enable it for other tasks.
    Thanks in advance.

Update: At least in some cases, I can see that the paused image is sharper with GPU acceleration enabled than the paused image without it. So the playback resolutions may well be the same with or without GPU, and all I'm seeing is a greater difference between playback and paused during GPU acceleration. Also, there may in fact be a drop during playback resolution in software only mode, albeit less noticeable.
(As mentioned though, this was certainly an issue I experienced in 5.5; don't know if anyone else has experienced something similar.)
My new question would be, is it possible with the right hardware to guarantee full resolution playback in multi-cam? I'm currently editing 4 cameras: 2 5DMIIIs, a GH2, and a Sony NX5U. Editing system is comprised of an i7 4770K overclocked to 4.2GHz, 16GB RAM, GTX 650 Ti Boost, and three HDDs: an SSD for OS and Programs, a 7200 for media and projects, and another 7200 for pagefile, previews, and media cache. Would creating a RAID 0 for the media files help at all in this case? Or is the drop in resolution I experience something I likely won't be able to change?

  • PP CS6 crashes when GPU Acceleration (CUDA)/ (OpenCL) enabled?

Ever since enabling GPU Acceleration in PP on my Late 2012 15" Macbook Pro (Non Retina) I keep having my computer randomly crash while I'm editing (to the point where it either restarts its self, or freezes such that I have to).
I can't think what else the reason would be if it's not the GPU acceleration, as it seems to have coincided with this.
    My Macbook's specs are:
    > 2.3Ghz CPU
    > 500GB SSD (MacHD)
    > 256GB SSD (in optical drive - Scratch Disk/ Exports)
    > 16GB Ram
    > Nvida GeForce 650M 512GB (most up to date CUDA drivers)
Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated!  Thanks.

  • Please speed up Lightroom using OpenCL/GPU acceleration and/or AVX support!

    Hello,
for those, who don't look at the feature request site:
    http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/topics/please_speed_up_lightroom_using_open cl_gup_acceleration_and_or_avx_support
    Hello,
I enjoy using LR. But there is still one thing that lacks: Performance, especially in the Develop Module and Zooming...
So please speed up LR using:
    - OpenCL/GPU acceleration. Capture One pro 6 is doing this. If they can do this, Adobe can also!
    - AVX support: Nik Software is using this. Processes got 1,5 to 2,6 times faster than before. So again... if Nik Software is capable of implementing this, Adobe should be able as well!
So, I am no expert, but from what I have read I think it is possible for Adobe.
Would appreciate to hear from other people who have more inside knowledge if this is possible for LR!
    Thanks, Adobe for hearing us.
    Christoph

    Hello Keith,
    thanks for the info!
It well might be that OpenCL causes some problems. On the other side sometimes I don't know how good a forum is to measure the problems.
Remember when a new LR Release comes out and the forum is flooded mit posts about the problems? If you just read alle the posts in the LR forum you could come to the conclusion that the new LR is completely unuseable. But in reality I never had a problem upgrading to the new LR version...
I understand your point and it might really by to early to implement this technology in LR.
But I still hope for the other direction: AVX .
I just think that we have the hardware possibilities to improve speed and LR should take advantage of this.
    Kind regards,
    Christoph

  • Speedgrade very slow on GPU acceleration

My system has an nvidia gtx 590.
I run triple monitors so i need both GPu's (590 is a dual card FYI)
When running speedgrade in GPU acceleration even at 1/4 rez the video is maybe 10-12 fps
on software only it plays back realtime at full rez...
I am assuming this is a multiple GPU issue?
    any way to fix this?

I appear to have solved this....will post for those searching in the future...
I was using speedgrade in dual monitor mode
the Desktop interface monitor was on GPU 2 while the secondary output was on GPU 1.......speedgrade didn't like that
when I switched both desktop and secondary to GPU 1...everything worked fine. Can now playback at full rez on gpu acceleration

  • Render turns black when GPU acceleration + .psd in project

    Hi there,
Got Premiere Pro CC 2014.0.1 / 8.0.1 (21) Build, and a weird and very annoying issue :
When GPU rendering is turned ON, as soon as i'm importing a .psd (saved with "max compatibility option) into the project, make a sequence with it to make some animations, the rendering window renders nothing, it's black. Sound is still going on btw. I have to switch to basic render. Then i can't do anything real time, as i'm applying many effects and high resolution animations with smooth zooms, stabilization, color corrections and stuff like that.
Anyone facing the same issue or having a piece of advice is welcome.
    PS SPECS :
    OS :

  • Cfhttp is slow when sandbox security is enabled

We are running ColdFusion10 Ent. on Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard and IIS ver. 7.5. Java Version: 1.7.0_45
We have also implemented the CF lockdown guide.
Things have been running quite smoothly for some time now. However, after applying CF update 14 on our QA server we noticed an huge performance hit for all CFHTTP calls when security sandbox is enabled. If we disable the ssb then performance returns to normal. Disabling the sandbox is not an option for us.
Here is the difference for a simple cfhttp request.
    Sandbox enabled: 9109 ms.
    Sandbox disabled: 79 ms.
Rolling back to update 12 fixes the issue.
We've since applied update 15 and now 16 with no change in this performance. After applying all update we always re-run the connectors as stated by Adobe.
Our local dev machines (mac and PC) do not seem to experience this behaviour so I'm a bit concerned it might have something to do with IIS/connectors etc. on the server.
Any suggestions/advice would be much appreciated as we cannot apply updates to our current prod installation running ver.10 update 12 until this issue is resolved.
    Thanks in advance.
Update: To see if this issue was resolved in CF11, I installed CF11 on the same machine as above. Same issue exists with ssb enabled and the sandbox configured for my test app! The performance is still extremely poor for even a simple cfhttp request.

I would submit this as a bug if you have only started experiencing this since an update and are able to reproduce it. https://bugbase.adobe.com/index.cfm?event=newBug

  • QT RTSP client doesn't display when direct3d acceleration is enabled

    Hi ,
I am using Quicktime7.6.5 on WinXP (Core 2 Duo 2.33Ghz and 1GB RAM)as an RTSP client to playback HD streams sent over IP networks by a streaming server.
If direct3d checkbox(edit->preferences->quicktime->advanced) is enabled(by default it is enabled),actual video streamed is not being displayed, but large quicktime icon is displayed .
If direct3d acceleration is disabled actual video is played out, but with lot of jerks because of performance issues as acceleration is disabled.
Instead of RTSP,if the SDP file is directly opened in quicktime to playback same video stream with direct3d enabled, QT plays out without any issues.
Any ideas on enabling smooth playback of HD streams in quicktime(as RTSP client) ?
    Thanks and regards
    Anil

Flash often crashes here too, since I’ve installed a GeForce card with the nvidia blob. I think it’s pretty common.
For youtube and some other video sites you can use the GreaseMonkey script ViewTube in order not to use Flash.

  • Flash hangs when HW acceleration is enabled in Chromium

The system hangs for a second every now and then when playing videos in youtube. And also when I disable HW acceleration, it displays blue tint in all the videos. So, apparently, there is no way I can watch videos on youtube without a problem.
I could use HTML5 but even while using that videos hang when I seek them. Also, there are times when even though I have joined HTML5 trial, videos are still displayed using flash player.
Hardware details: Nvidia 320M graphics card.
This happened after I upgraded my flashplayer. I have noticed that FF plays the videos just fine. Is there a solution to this?
Also, due to low disk space, I generally don't keep the packages in cache so I don't have the older version in cache. I was really hoping if there is no solution to this problem, I would be glad if anyone will share older package here.

The previous version 11.1.102.63 in the  ARM-repo has security issues,
but a version 10.3.183.18 with up-to-date security patches is available from Adobe.
Looking at the PKGBUILD of flashplugin-10 looks like it's a 32-bit version while I am on a 64-bit system. For the time being, I have installed version 11.1.102.63-1 which is working fine for now.
I am not really sure as to whether a new version will come or not as last month said that it will launch flash only via pepper plugin api in linux.

  • How did I get better compression when using GPU acceleration?

    Hello,
I was just making a short, 1:12-long video encoded as H.264 in an MP4 wrapper. I had edited the video in Premiere Pro CC, and was exporting through Adobe Media Encoder at a framerate of 29.97 FPS and a resolution of 1920x1080. I wanted to do a test to see how much GPU acceleration benefits me. So, I ran two different tests, one with and one without. The one with GPU acceleration finished in 2:09. The one without it took 2:40, definately enough to justify using GPU acceleration (my GPU is an NVidia GTX 660 Ti which I have overclocked). I am sure my benefits would be even greater in most videos I make, since this one had relatively few effects.
However, I checked the file sizes out of curiosity, and found that the one made with GPU acceleration was 175 MB in size, and the other was 176 MB. While the difference is pretty small, I am wondering why it exists at all. I checked the bitrates, and the one made with GPU acceleration is 19,824 KB/s, whereas the other is 19,966 KB/s. I used the exact same presets for both. I even re-encoded the videos again just to test it and verify the results, and the second test confirms what the first showed.
So, what I am wondering is: What is it that made this possible, and could this be used to my advantage in future productions?

As I said in my original post, I did test it again. I have also ran other tests, with other sequences, and they all confirm that the final file is smaller when GPU acceleration is used.
Yes, the difference is small but I'm wondering how there can even be a variable at all. If you put a video in and have it spit it out, then do that again, the videos should be the same size. It's a computer program, so the outputs are all based on variables. If the variables don't change, the output shouldn't either. For this reason, I cannot believe you when you say "I can, for example, run exactly the same export on the same sequence more than once, are rarely are they identical in export times or file size."

  • Artifacts with Mercury GPU Acceleration.

    Hello there,
I hope someone will be able to help me with a problem that has just started to occur on my PC.
I have Premiere Pro CS5 (5.0.3). When I have the renderer switched to "Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration" in project settings all my clips at 50fps playback with a green flickering line and blocky artifacts at the top of the frame. When GPU acceleration is switched off the problem is less noticable but there is still a line of pixels at the top of the frame that glitches. The artifacts are present when playing clips in the viewer as well as in the timeline.
I am in the middle of a music video which uses a lot of slow motion and until a few days ago this problem did not exist although playback was sometimes choppy and had crashed a couple of times recently. I have 6gb RAM and am editing native 720p footage from a canon DSLR. Clips shot at 25fps in 1080p playback without issues either with GPU off or on.
My graphics card is a Nvidia GeForce GTX 285 and the drivers are fully up to date.
Please help me out if anyone knows what the issue could be.
    Thanks very much
    Dan

    >GeForce GTX 285 and the drivers are fully up to date
I think you should not use an nVidia driver any later than 296.10
    Do NOT use 306.97 http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1084197
When you install 296.10 be sure to NOT select auto-update

  • Preview slower with hardware GPU acceleration enabled than software only?

Sorry if this had been asked before.
But somehow my preview/playback was slower and choppy once I enable the hardware GPU acceleration(I mean I select the 'mercury playback engine gpu acceleration' under Project-Settings-General')
I followed the following tips to enable my graphic card, (thanks David)
    http://www.studio1productions.com/Articles/PremiereCS5.htm
I was working on a clip of approx 3 mins long with majority of the footage(1920 and 720) from a DSLR, some 1920 clips from gopro hd2 and some 1440 clips from a P&S camera(scale to 1920 to match the sequence setting). main effects applied (magic bullet looks).
Before I enabled my graphic card and selected it from the project setting, the preview was ok, nearly smooth all the way except some sections with dynamic links, but once I turn it on, the preview became ridiculously choppy, I couldn't believe my eyes, so I turned it off (select mercury playback engine software only), did playback again, it became much smoother!(or just as smooth as it was when it was under that setting, it's just that comparison gave me a bad impression of my hardware gpu acceleration).
btw: I'm running on a low spec laptop
    Core™ i7-2670QM 2.2GHz turbo to 3.1GHZ
    8GB DDR3 memory
    NVIDIA GeForce 555M 1GB graphics
    750G HDD(I partition to 150G system drive and 600G media drive) 5400RPM (I know, it's slow)
currently have about 80G and 400G empty space on two drives respectively.
15.6” HD display (max resolution 1366x768)
I know the machine is not a proper workstation to work with CS6, but the hardware gpu acceleration was slower than the software only gpu acceleration was beyond my understanding, not a minor difference we are talking about, it was much much slower!
    Have I done something wrong?
    Any tips would be appreciated.

    Here's my guess.
MB Looks runs on the GPU at all times, though not in the same way as Adobe's 'accelerated' effects.  With CUDA off, the graphics card was free to process the Looks effects at full speed.  With CUDA on, PP took some of those resources and Looks processed slower.
Remove Looks and replace it with PP's native accelerated effects and you'll see what all the hoopla is about.

  • GPU Acceleration for Lightroom

When will Lightroom have GPU acceleration like Photoshop CS4 has?

From what I've read GPU acceleration in CS4 currently only applies to canvas zooming and rotation... not EVERYTHING is accelerated by the GPU. So what effect (if any) would GPU acceleration for have for those items in LR? (honest question... I don't know.)
I've also read Adobe is planning on more features later on in CS to use GPU. So to me this appears currently as a first stage deployment of this technology... not TOO exciting in terms of actual benefit today, but with promising prospects in the future.
As for LR, I assume it all depends on what features would benefit from this (some would actually slow down if routed through GPU, if I understand some the writeup about this.)
