Lightroom suddenly stopped rendering previews

I've been using Lightroom since v1 and have been using v3 since it was released.  All of a sudden tonight, while working on photos that were already in my catalog, Lightroom has stopped rendering previews and is much slower to operate.
I've optimised my catalog, I've tried purging my cache, I've rebooted etc.  Nothing I've done is helping, if I zoom in in Library view I just see a blury outline that is the existing thumbnail.  Some of my other images don't even have thumbnails anymore.  If I go to Develop view it behaves normally, it's just Library view that seems broken.

I'd purged the CameraRaw cache, but after no success I ended up deleting my entire "Lightroom 3 Catalog Previews.lrdata" directory (which freed up 30GB of space and took over 10 minutes at the command line).
Fingers crossed it seems to have resolved my issue... certainly on relaunching Lightroom it's now recreated this folder, hammered my CPU and successfully created new thumbnails for the folder I was viewing in Lightroom.  It's a little concerning just how much it hammered my CPU (100% for about 5 minutes, still sitting at 75% now after nearly 10 minutes) when I was only looking at a folder with 23 images in it... it was also hammering my Lightroom/System disk for the first 5 minutes, but not the disk with my photos on it.
Oh well, will see if it happens again and I might start to manually delete the previews folder semi-regularly.

  • PREVIEW 3.0.9 SUDDENLY STOPPED RENDERING PDF FILES PROPERLY.  How to fix?

I have been using Preview to open PDF files on the MacBook Pro since I bought it a little less than a year ago. Then just the other day, I opened a PDF file and it looked horrible. The color was missing. Part of the text was missing. Some of the text was present and in the right place. (I had not made any recent changes to my self. No software or hardware added or removed recently.)
I am fairly certain that the problem is with Preview or some other Apple program or utility that works with it. I sent by e-mail the PDF file to my wife's PC. I then opened the PDF file in the Adobe Reader on her machine that it was rendered perfectly.
One other thing: In my frustration I went to the Adobe site and downloaded Adobe PDF reader for Mac. And I think installed it. But when I try to open a PDF file, Preview opens it, regardless of whatever else I do. Even if I have Preview closed and Adobe PDF reader for Mac open, Preview jumps in and opens the PDF file. And it looks horrible.
So, in summary, what I'd like to do:
    1) Get Preview running properly again; and
    2) Learn how to control what program opens PDF files.
    Thanks gang!

    Hi Reg,
Is this happening with all PDF files, or just this one that you mentioned in your post?
    2) Learn how to control what program opens PDF files.
There's a few different ways to do this.
    1. Open Adobe Reader and simply drag-n-drop the PDF file onto the Adobe Reader icon that appears in the Dock
    2. Right-click (or hold the ctrl key and click on a single button mouse/trackpad) the PDF file and choose Open With... > Adobe Reader
    3. Select the PDF file, then press command+i to bring up the information window and change the default application towards the bottom of that window.
Edit: Probably unrelated, but are you still on 10.4.10 as mentioned in your profile tag line? 10.4.11 is the latest version of Tiger available.

  • Printing suddenly stopped: no preview anymore

    Hi,
My MacBook Pro suddely stopped printing through USB on an Epson Stylus Photo.
It doesn't matter wich account I use for logging in or whatever application, if I click on "Print", the print window comes up, but nothing is displayed in the preview (although is checked)and nothing prints. There is even an error saying: An error occurred while printing (or something alike). I use 10.4.x, even an upgrade to the latest 10.4.7 didn't help. Nor resetting the printer or reinstalling drivers. I checked disk-permissions with disk-utility (Apple): nothing helped.
I think there is communication anyway with the printer. If I disconnect and remove the printersettings, after connecting again the printer it shows up again: so there is communication?
Any help is very much appreciated!
    Thanks in advance.

Just an update - I was able to print from a Windows computer hooked up to the same printer, so I know the printer is still functioning properly. Airport device also appears to be working properly. Next will check USB cable - after that I'm at a bit of a loss.

  • I am using OS X 10.6.8 and Lightroom 4. Lightroom suddenly stopped opening.

It gives me an error message that the program unexpectedly closed when it never opened to begin with. I'm not sure where to even start. Any recommendations?

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Video previews suddenly stopped working in Lightroom 3.6

    Hey folks!
I'm using Lightroom 3.6, and although it has limited video support, it is good enough for my workflow.  It recognizes all of the video types that I deal with...SLR, point-and-shoot, and cell phone camera...and imports them and lets me keep my data organized.
In the last few weeks, though, Lightroom has stopped generating previews for my videos.  Previously in Grid View, it would eventually make a preview for all of my video types, include a duration indicator, and give me a button to play the video in an external viewer.  Now, all of my videos show up as blank gray boxes with only the film-reel icon to play the movie in an external player.
The movies themselves seem fine...they do indeed play fine in Windows Media player, etc.  I'm using all the same cameras...as far as I know, nothing has changed with the hardware or firmware on those devices.
In addition, Lightroom throws up a warning icon on each video.  When I hover over it, the message says, "Lightroom has encountered problems reading this photo."  Lightroom is saying "photo", that's not a typo.  I have searched on this error a bit, and many other people have "video" in that message, which makes me wonder if some wires have gotten crossed on the file types, etc.
Any ideas?  I'd love to get the previews back, it is a big time-saver over manually playing each anonymous video to see what it is...
    Thanks,
    Drew

  • Suddenly, display of previews has become erratic. Why?

Lightroom has stopped displaying preview in the Library module. In develope, it will display a selected image, and show a few on the film strip, but then they dissapear (gray out).
I have some deadlines I am in trouble on, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Not recent but more in the LR2 and LR3 timeframe. I haven't seen any
indication that anything fundamentally changed with how LR deals with
monitor profiles so I did not assume anything would be different now and my
guess is that these things still trip up Lightroom. My guess is that forum
searches would dredge them up. I remember helping solve lots and lots of
issues like this by having people recalibrate their monitor or delete their
vendor supplied profile. Often these problems were triggered by a software
update that installs a monitor profile. If I remember correctly almost all
of these problems involved Dell monitors but I do remember a few Samsungs
    too.

  • CS5 Bridge thumbnail previews suddenly stopped working

My Bridge very suddenly stopped displaying thumbnail previews - it only displays the default file type icon.
I have spent a lot of time googling this and have tried the following:
    Clearing the cache
Updating Bridge and assorted Abode Products
    Resetting Bridge to factory settings
Nothing has made any difference. I need the thumbnail previews for Bridge to be useful to me. Any help is highly appreciated.
I'm running CS5 on OSX Mavericks (10.9.1). Thanks!

Every file type (DNG, JPG, CR2, etc) except for PSD, but PSD looks distorted. It's all images, old and new, including ones I could preview perfectly before whatever happened happened. Thanks for responding!
Edit: Okay, so I did more digging and for some reason it shows TIF files, but nothing else.
Also, I am trying to view our photo library over our network, none of these files are on my local HD.

  • Lightroom has stopped showing thumbnails on Import. How do I get my previews back?

My Lightroom (5.3) has stopped showing previews on Import.  I can still see older Imports in Library but my latest Imports are just grey boxes.  I can open the boxes in Develop and these stay as previews for up to 3 thumbnails in Library before disappearing again.  I have tried reinstalling Lightroom 5.  I have checked my sRGB.  It is the same problem with different cards and different external drives.
How can I get my Library to show Preview thumbnails once more?  Thanks, Angus

Could it be that the Camera Software is installed and it got Updated?
-Sometimes it happens that the "autoplay" uses the Codec for recognizing the files, and When Lightroom tries to do the same the files are in use, so it can not generate Previews/Thumbnails.
Do you get the same result if you Try to Import from Safe Boot?
    - It could be that there is some software installed that now also manages during startup, also preventing Lightroom to Generate the Previews.
Have you tested with a new Catalog, do you get the same behavior there?
Also it might be far fetched, but incase you haven't seen it it might help you on the issue:

Hopefully this will help to resolve the issue.

  • Rendering Previews stalled.

Hi, I left 978 image importing when I went to bed hoping to see all the previews rendered when I woke up.
Lightroom stopped rendering 1:1 previews after 649 & won't seem to continue.
    They are NEF & jpgs.
It's taking ages to see what's what & sort waiting to see the jpgs render.
Anything I can do to encourage the rendering to recontinue?
Don't really want it to start over.
My mac was on all night, I was hoping it would sleep when it was done rendering.
    Thanks for any help.

So switching back to Lightroom it had started creating previews.
I deleted a bunch of obvious rejects & am letting it run.
    It's very slow.
I did a similar shoot 2 days ago & it seemed to make the previews more quickly.
    15 done so far...
    But at least it's moving.
    Thanks again!

  • The editable rectangles of my still photos in the composition panel suddenly stopped showing up.

    Hi There, Adobe Community!
I am relatively new to After Effects CC and am using it to create a stop motion film with a large amount of photos.
Usually, when importing the individual images into my composition panel, a sequence of editable rectangles appears in the compostition panel allowing me to edit the frame length of the still photos.
After around 950 imported images, the little rectangles suddenly stopped showing up. But when looking at a preview of the project, it's as if the photos are in there, in the sequence they should be. I'm just unable to edit them like the previous ones with recangles showing.
I probably am not describing this too well, so here is a screen shot which hopefully makes my problem somewhat more clear. The area of issue is where you see the descending sequence of boxes in the comp panel. The red tracking bar is there to show that there are still photos continuing the sequence, I just can't see the boxes for em..
thank you so much for any help in the matter!

So I guess you are talking about the layers in the timeline go missing, not the handles in the Comp Window.
I think you have run into a display bug. Try selecting the top hundred or so layers and pre-compose them. If the missing layers appear then that's the problem. I have had it happen a couple of times before in previous versions of AE..
Here's a workflow hint for you, break your comps up into short sequences instead of trying to do a 4 or 5 minute piece with 900 layers in a single comp. You'll find editing and changing a lot easier.
I would also pre-mix your music. AE is a really terrible music mixer....

  • Can Lightroom render 1:1 Previews when importing my Photos?

Q: Can Lightroom render 1:1 Previews when importing my Photos?
    FAQ revised 25 April 2009
Ans: Prior to version 1.3 Lightroom did not support 1:1 preview rendering during import, the actual options for  Initial Previews being:  Embedded or  Standard. However, more recent versions allow four types of previews to be rendered during import (i.e.  Minimal, Embedded & Sidecar, Standard, and  1:1). It's also worth noting the following on Lightroom import behaviour:
    1.  Minimal (Lightroom default) or Embedded & Sidecar is by far the quickest method for getting your photos into the Lightroom catalog. However, the lack of Standard, which is the minimum that Lightroom can actually work with, means that the application will render standard-sized on demand (i.e. as thumbs/photos become visible within the photo Content area). Asking Lightroom to undertake this task at the same time as you're trying to use the application will result in sub optimal performance.
    2. Importing your photos with the  Standard preview selected within the Import dialog will take longer than 1 above, but on completion Lightroom will already have previews that match the minimum requirement for working in the Library. Assuming that you won't be looking at every image at 100% (i.e 1:1) then this preview size will allow you to quickly review, rate, label, even make quick colour/tone adjustments, etc the photos within the Library module. If you need to see a photo at 100% then Lightroom will render that preview on demand (while it's being rendered you'll see the "Rendering Preview" overlay appear at bottom of preview).  Note that when using a 23" or larger monitor it to is best to set the Standard sized previews so that they are rendered at 2048 pixels
    3. Importing your photos with the  1:1 preview size selected will result in Lightroom taking even longer to complete the import process than would have been the case if standard-sized had been chosen. 1:1 previews also take up significantly more disk space than standard-sized.
If you're not going to be working on the photos immediately after import but do need to get them into Lightroom as quickly as possible, then the best option would be to choose import option 1. Once the photos have been imported choose either  Render Standard-sized Previews or  Render 1:1 previews from Library module Library>Previews menu.

When I search these forums for "CFCopyFormattingDescription", I find a bunch of crash reports posted that look almost exactly the same as mine.  It appears there's a bug in iPhoto, perhaps when reading metadata from the JPG file (readRawTiffPropsFromPath).
Interestingly, the Preview app can open and display the file just fine.  I even opened the inspector and it showed all of the TIFF and exif metadata just fine, no crash.  The file also opens just fine on Windows.
Now how do we get the attention of the iPhoto development team so I can send them the photos, have them reproduce the crash, and fix it?

  • OTF/PS fonts have recently stopped rendering in Flash Pro CS3 on Windows 7/64

Recently, a number of my OTF/PS fonts have stopped rendering when used in Flash Pro CS3. The fonts appear in the fonts menu, render properly in the font preview popup in the font menu, but the fonts fail to render on stage when used, with certain exceptions:
--If Bitmap Text is selected, the fonts appear (but aliased)
--If Anti-alias for animation is selected, then the text appears when text insertion is active in the text box, but vanishes when focus shifts to another element, tool, selection
In all other cases and for all other settings (yes, including black text with 100% alpha on a white background, etc etc), the text shows solely as transparent. You can select the text (although not see what you're selecting), cut and paste, and as you change the font size, kerning, justification, bold, italic, etc, the text boxes resize as normally expected; simply, the text does not show up.
The fonts work normally in all other CS3 and Windows applications, and up until about last week (Dec 12 or so), used to work fine in Flash.
The problem fonts appear to be (primarily Open Type Format) Post Script Outline fonts.
I have installed all Windows updates, Flash Pro CS3 updates, deleted the Flash user config files, deleted and reinstalled the fonts, and copied the fonts to the C:/user/Program Files/Common/Adobe/Fonts folder.
There were no new installations (applications, fonts, etc) around the time when the error started showing up, aside from possibly Windows updates.
Given the timing (worked fine Tuesday, failed on Wednesday), I believe a Windows update may have been at least partially responsible, though perhaps it's the Mayan apocalypse.
Running Flash Professional CS3 on a Windows 7 64 bit system.
