Lightroom using CPU time even if not running?

Hi there!
Im am just curious: I exited LR3 a few hours ago and now was wondering why there ist still a process called lightroom.exe using one complete CPU core. Does LR does some work in the background without the programm running? Or may it be some stuck process?
Technical things: I use Win7 32bin on an Intel Core2Duo (Lenovo T61 notebook) and the catalogue was not saved as I already excited LR before on that day.
Any ideas?

Michael,
Must be a stuck process. Lightroom does not have any background tasks. I would check if it always happens, and if so, investigate further.

Safari Web Content - Constantly using CPU time even when no tabs

I have a MacBook Pro Retina (2012), with 16GB of RAM. It is running OSX Mavericks (10.9.4). Recently, I have switched from using it with multiple external monitors, to using it on its own. Here, I have noticed unusually raised usage temperatures - even without any applications (other than Safari) running. Looking at Activity Monitor, it seems Safari Web Content (com.apple.WebKit.WebContent) is constantly using one of my CPUs. Whilst it does not affect the speed of the computer much, it does mean that "idle" temperatures are significantly raised, which is a pain when I am using it on the road.
I have done the following, all of which have not succeeded:
Disabled all Safari extensions
Cleared the cache
Closed all tabs
Sampled the process - unsure of what the output of this means, but if you require it, then I can post it here.
I am unsure what else to try. Currently, the only action that resolves the issue is completely quitting Safari - obviously, this isn't something I can really do for normal usage.
Has anybody come across this before? Is there anything more I can do to investigate the issue? Finally, is there a known fix for this problem?

Do you have any of the following installed:
anti-virus/internet security software?
"Cleaning" or "tuning" software?
third-party backup software (not Apple's Time Machine) that came bundled with an external hard drive?
online backup software (Carbonite, OneDrive, GoogleDrive)?
Also please do "About Safari" from your Safari menu so we can verify your version. On July 11, Apple inadvertently posted a Seed release of a Safari version still under development for the next OSX version. People who had updates set to "automatic" got the "not ready for prime time" version. If you have Safari 7.1, you were "gifted" with that little bag of post-processed cattle feed.

If you wnat to see the applications that are running, open the Activity Monitor application (it's in /Applications/Utilities). After opening it, select "All Processes" above "Show" in the toolbar, and you will see all the processes that are running.
I/O errors often happen on a damaged hard drive. If you are receiving that error, you should make a backup with Time Machine or Carbon Copy Cloner as soon as possible and take your Mac to an Apple Store or reseller to get another hard disk.
If the warranty is void, you can try installing it yourself, but note that there are some iMacs which are very difficult to have the hard drive replaced. Search the steps in iFixit > http://www.ifixit.com

Saving data from graph/chart to use next time a VI is run

Hi all!
I am not sure if this is even possible, or whether someone has maybe
done something like this. I need to save the data from a graph or chart
during each run of a VI. I then want to call this data back into the Vi
the next time it is run so it can be displayed at the same time that
the VI runs. I need to do this in order to compare measurements from
different setups during each measurement. This way I will have a
reference to be able to observe what influences different changes in
the system has had in comparison to a previous test.
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

There are a few points to this.
First, you need to decide whether you want to save the data or just hold it in memory. Saving it to the hard drive will be more complex, depending on the format of your data, but you can search for "file" in the example finder (Help>>Find Examples) and look at the VIs in the file I\O palette.
If you simply want to hold the data in memory until the next time the VI is run, you can simply use a local variable or a shift register. You can search the example finder for "shift register" for some examples.
The key to what you want is using multiple plots on your graph\chart. When you do, you can take the data from your last run and simply insert it into the graph as an extra plot, which will be visible at the same time as your new data. Again, search the example finder, this time for "graph" or "chart" to see how to work with multiple plots.
To learn more about LabVIEW, I suggest you try searching this site and google for LabVIEW tutorials. Here and here are a couple you can start with. You can also contact your local NI office and join one of their courses.
In addition, I suggest you read the LabVIEW style guide and the LabVIEW user manual (Help>>Search the LabVIEW Bookshelf).

Time Machine does not run automatic backups

For the last couple of days TM is refusing to run the hourly backups.
Manual backups run fine, but not the automatic ones.
Modifying the exclude list seems to have no effect on the manual backups.
It keeps using the "old" exclude list, i.e. the one I had before the problem
started.
In /var/log/system.log I find the following message every hour:
Nov 18 21:26:03 macdelta com.apple.backupd-auto[12774]: Not starting scheduled T
ime Machine backup - time machine destination not resolvable.
I checked the plist
/System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.backupd-auto.plist
and it seems to be fine. It is identical to the one in another mac that shows no problems with TM. The same is true for the other plists related to backupd in that directory.
Question 1: What are all the plists that control the behaviour of TM
Question 2: How do I resume hourly automatic backups?

My laptop's drive is encrypted and my laptop is with me at all times. The backup disk remains at my desk and does not have a cable lock. The important thing to consider here is that even if your laptop drive is encrypted (e.g., through FileVault), the TimeMachine backups *are not* (unless you are logged out of your account when you backup--at which point, why bother using TimeMachine over a simple disk cloner such as SuperDuper!?).
Anyway, that's off-topic for now. You mention that it changed the element of the plist that identifies the backup volume, do you mean the UUID element? I noticed it changed:

Mail in 10.6.4 not usable: it consumes all CPU time and will not quit

Mail application does not work properly.
It eats up most of the available CPU time (till >300% on my machine), becomes unresponsive and will only quit when killed by a force quit in the Activity Monitor.
I have only two accounts set up. One Gmail account and a google apps one.
I used to synch with a Blackberry but now I synch directly through google apps.
The problem was sporadic at best at first but has become the usual behaviour now. Major change has been installing 10.6.4
I have switched to Thunderbird since Mail is not usable.
Tx for any hint on how to solve this issue

It seems to be a recurring issue with 10.6.4...there's probably not much mere mortals like us can do. I haven't found a solution. Try re-installing 10.6.4.

Calling Console Application that uses WebBrowser from SQL Server - Not Running

Hi there. I am working in a program automation that needs to get files from a website and put it in a database. It is done but as I need a console application and need webbrowser that comes from Windows Forms, I am trying to call it from the SQL Server using
the xp_cmdshell but when it runs the .exe, it execute the block that is before the Application.Run() command but when it reaches this line, it stay running on Task manager but it not execute my code. How can I fix this? I had first created a Windows form application
but it was not working anyway and then I tried a console application and then I use the [STAThread] and Application.Run(). At least it runs the file from SQL Server but is not executing all my code, I think that it stops on Application.Run() line. Any help
will be very useful.

As you can see, I call a function on start named ClearDatabase, when I call the file from sql server it executes, the tables are cleared, but what I think is that the problem stop when reach the line Application.Run() as it is the line that allows the remaining
code to execute as it uses events from WebBrowser class.
It is a program automation that needs to get a lot of files from a website that needs login and read line by line from the files and put on server, if I call it from the executable it runs fine, the only problem is when calling from SQL Server, Do you know
how to fix this?

Time machine will not run under lion

I read somewhere that one needs a different version of time machine for lion. Where do I get it?

Have upgraded a brand new i7 27" imac to the latest OSX 10.7.1. This is the SSD + 2TB HD iMac.
When I have been run Time Machine to backup on an external 2TB SATA drive (where the 2TB backup disk is mounted in a NexStar docking station) Time Machine will make a clean copy of tyhe whole backup structure the first time. However, subsequent invcrement backups are failing with the error:
Time Machine could not complete the backup.
Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while creating the backup folder.
Does anyone know what might be causing this please.

ICal working even when not running

I'm not sure if this related to Snow Leopard (which I recently installed) or not as I don't normally shut down iCal.
However, I shut down iCal and I'm still getting the iCal alerts. I have verified that it is not running.
How do I shut down iCal so as to not have my reminders pop up (while I do not have the application running) and why would it give me reminders when it's not running, anyway.

Take a look at the setting of "Turn off alarms only when iCal is not open" in iCal's Advanced preferences. If you don't want alarms when it is not running, select this option. Most people, I suspect, do want them - if you want to be reminded of something, you don't want to be not reminded 'cos you have forgotten to leave iCal running.
It is not a Snow Leopard change.

Unable to use interective photo galleries (i.e. New York Times' before/after Japan tsunami damages, and others, also in NYT website) Had to use Google Chrome, even though not my default browser.

On 03/13/2011, I could not use an interactive photo gallery in the New York Times website. I had a slide on each picture which showed the before and after the tsunami damage, in Japan.
I had to use Google Chrome, though Firefox is my default browser.
I had the same problem with the photo gallery of dresses during and after the Oscar event.

That site relies upon JavaScript to use the before and after feature. Make sure JavaScript is enabled, to do that open the Options window, go to the Content panel and make sure "Enable JavaScript" is selected.
If you have an add-on such as NoScript that blocks JavaScript, you need to set it to allow scripts to run on that site.

My laptop (win7 2ghz, 1gig) has 100% cpu usage with itunes installed (even when not running itunes) since the upgrade. i had to uninstall. tried installing but still the same problem. my daughter wants the new ipad, but this is a serious problem.

when itunes upgraded my laptop went to 100% cpu usage. only solution was uninstall. have tried itunes again as my daughter wants the new ipad. still same problem tho so not keen to spend £400 on new pad without pc support. anyone help? (ps been using ipod touches 1 and 2, been great source of pleasure for my two girls, but cant sync them, so using the little shuffles for music, syncing to an old version of itunes on an old netbook - had the sense to switch off upgrades when the new version went wrong)

Close your iTunes,
Go to command Prompt -
(Win 7/Vista) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES, right mouse click "Command Prompt", choose "Run as Administrator".
(Win XP SP2 & above) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/Command Prompt
In the "Command Prompt" screen, type in
netsh winsock reset
Hit "ENTER" key
Restart your computer.
If you do get a prompt after restart windows to remap LSP, just click NO.
Now launch your iTunes and see if it is working now.

Outlook (MS Office for MAC2011) appears to be using up to 67% of my CPU time even when I'm doing nothing. Also, immediately after installing Mountain Lion, log-ins to the OS and normal operations noticeably slowed. Suggestions?

After installing Mountain Lion, I experienced a noticeable reduction in performance. When I log-in, I must wait several seconds for the cursor to become effective in the log-in window. When I come out of standby mode, I have the same issue. Also, when looking at cpu usage, Outlook appears to be using up to 67% of cpu when not doing anything. I'm not happy with this result.
Does anyone have suggestions as to how to fix?

Automatically connects to sync and will start playing music all the time even when not using sync

My iPhone 4S will automatically start playing music as soon as I start my vehicle with sync.you can't hear it but on the screen it shows its playing even when listening to the radio

Try resetting it if you can: hold the on/off and home buttons until you see the Apple logo (ignore the off slider that appears first), then release. If you can't, try to connect it to iTunes, go to the Summary tab of your sync settings and click Restore to restore it. If that doesn't work you'll have to force it into recovery mode to restore it as outlined here: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1808.
You can check in iTune to see if you have a backup. They are listed in iTunes>Preferences>Devices. However, the backup may not bring your contacts back as contacts are only backed up as necessary to preserve the recent call and call favorites lists.

LabVIEW 7.1 reports an application error 'instruction adresses memory at 0x00000000 - ... could not be written' when finishing LabVIEW, even when not running any private code

I have found similar Qs here, but this one is _somehow_ different.
My quite large app (>600 VIs) uses some DLL calls to communicate with medical devices. It runs OK, AFAIK, even when started several times. BUT I get an error message each time I when finishing LabVIEW 7.1 (even when just having loaded the app!!!). The error message states that "The instruction at 0x778cca36 adresses memory at 0x00000000. The process 'written' could not be done on that memory. Click to close the app".
Any clues?
My system: Athlon64 3000+ with 1GB of RAM running W2k German with all availabel SPs, LabVIEW 7.1 English with all support files from the devellopr suite May05 edition. System was set up 2 days ago on a fresh PC. The old system showed the very same behavior.
My opinion is, that simply loading an app and than removing it should not cause such an error??!!

I can't look at your code because I don't have LV 7.1, but I would recommend searching on the side of the DLL.
Do you have the source for the DLL? Can you be sure that the DLL doesn't somehow have a memory addressing bug? The DLL will be loadsd as soon as the program is loaded AFAIK, so maybe when unloading the DLL an error occurs because something isn't initialised properly. I've never programmed a DLL, so I may be way wrong, but my instinct tells me that the problem will most likely be with the DLL.
