Lightroom v1.0 is very slow

I got adobe Lightroom since yesterday and I find it very slow, if you select a photo and then you click 'develop' it takes hours and hours before you actually land in the 'develop' tab, if I want to make adjustments on my photo's Lightroom stops working and it will not react so I have close it and start it again. Has anyone experienced the same kind of trouble?
Roger

LR is very slow on some Windows machines for (to me) unknown reasons. I run on two pretty slow Windows machines and LR 1.0 is quite fast for me. This includes running my single-core Pentium M laptop on battery power at 600MHz.
I have posted many times some tips for making LR 1.0 operate faster.

  • Lightroom 4.4 very slow - tried everything

    Hi all...
Lightroom 4.4 is very slow for me... everything takes longer than it should and it's driving me nuts. Can anyone help?
    Some details:
I have LR 4.4 on a Macbook Air. I have two libraries:
    Internal - 5,000 photos
    External Drive - 21,000 photos
My external drive is not connected and I am working with photos on the internal drive... so it's only 5k photos.
I've already tried all of the troubleshooting tips:
    Purged camera raw cache
Increased camera raw cache to 3GB
Purged video cache (even though I have no video files in LR)
    Deleted all previews (8GB worth)
    Optimized catalog
    Restarted LR
My Macbook Air has 30GB of memory free.
Any suggestions? It's driving me nuts.
    Thanks!

I can now report from both sides of the fence. Up until yesterday, I had a four-year old Core2Duo system, 8GB, that had the dreaded slowness. Not as bad as described above perhaps, but there was clearly something not working as it should. Using matrix-based monitor profiles and updating video card drivers relieved some of the symptoms, but the disease was still there.
At the same time I used an i5 16GB system that was much better. Not good (as in instantaneous), but acceptable.
This morning I fired up my new system for the first time and sent it on its maiden voyage. Naturally the first thing I did was open Lightroom 4.3, and...yes. So that's how it's supposed to work! Snappy, immediately responsive, switching images like nothing ever happened.
    Phew.
Now this is a pretty high-spec'ed machine, i7-3820, Asus P9X79 pro, 32GB, SSD. Let's not hope these are the real requirements for good Lightroom performance. But I did reuse the old video card, an ATI 6670 running the 12.8 driver, and it works just fine.
At the moment it's a pretty lean setup: Aside from mobo and video drivers I've only installed Lightroom, CS 5.5 Design Premium and Eizo calibration software. Anti-virus, mouse and keyboard drivers, file synchronization software, font manager and Office remain. I'll keep a close look at how Lightroom behaves as these are added.
Bottom line, and there's no doubt about it: Brilliant as it is, there is sickness in the Lightroom code somewhere. For some people, the unlucky ones,  the symptoms are bad. Most people get away with a mild flu, and some are immune.

  • Lightroom is very slow, utilizes 100% CPU, then freezes or closes program.  How do I fix it?

I am having a problem with Lightroom 5 being very slow, utilizing 100% CPU, then freezing or closing the program.  How do I fix it?
I just upgraded to LR5 from LR3 on Sunday as well as CS6 from CS5 (which I have not tried out yet).  I spent several hours talking with Vamil, from LR Support Staff yesterday.  He was extremely helpful and kind and tried everything he could think of while remote-handling my PC and talking with me on the phone.  He deleted preferences, cache, temp files, updated graphics with a new replacement file from AMD site, then re-downloaded and reinstalled LR5.
It is still very slow and then freezes and closes down with a message of utilizing 100% CPU.  Within several seconds of using the brush in Develop, I started having lots of problems.  I could not even move the picture around.  The side screens would not disappear like they should.  And I could not move to another picture.  The day before I spent several hours trying to work on just 1 picture.  After all the changes yesterday, I tried to move from picture number 1 to about 130 after having not touched it for 10 minutes, and a half hour later, it still said, "Processing" with no picture coming up, just a blank prieview pane.
LR Support suggested I get a new CPU though he thought according to specs mine should be ok and other programs were running fine.
My PC is only 2 years old.
I talked to HP briefly about CPU updates for my HP PC.  He said I probably do not have a problem but suggested I run self-diagnostics and maybe buy a new CPU anyway.
I ran diagnostics listed through the HP Support Assistant connection on my PC.  All was ok.
I still researched if I could buy a compatible CPU upgrade.  I cannot even find any CPUs still selling that are listed for my PC.  Best Buy Store said they could not even order a compatible CPU.  They said my Bus speed may not be big enough, so they suggest I get a new PC.  What Bus speed do I need?
I have the following PC Setup:
AMD Phenom II X6 1045T Processor 2.70 GHz with 6 Cores
              with 2700 MHz Base, 3200 MHz Boost, and 4000 System Bus Speed, and 95 watts;
         HP Pavilion Elite, HPE-500y, 900 GB Free, new in 2011;
         Windows 7, 64 Bit;
         RAM 16 GB, DDR3;
         Graphics AMD Radeon HD 6450;
         Nikon, D200, with Raw Files;
         External Hard Drive for Original Photos, 600 GB Free;
         LR Catalog and Library are on Main Hard Drive;
Monitor, Sony CPD-200ES, new in 2004.
I am thinking of buying a new monitor tonight mostly so I can do better photo work while enlarging the pictures to do it.  I am concerned that while it will help my viewing, it will take more power away, and make my usage of LR5 even worse.  Will a new monitor affect my performance?  I am looking at HP Monitors with IPS.  Is this the best recommended choice for LR and Photoshop CS6?
I think I would like to stay with a 6 core processor since I need to have several items open for other non-Photoshop functions.  When running LR5, I had everything else closed.  With LR3, I was able to have other things open.
I do not really want to buy a new computer and know that those I have talked with at this point are only guessing after looking for what they thought should fix it.  4 People from Lightroom Support have all thought I should not be having problems with my setup.
I bought one of the best computers 2 years ago.  Is it really obsolete already so that I cannot use LR5?  Is everyone else buying a new PC every 2 years?  I used to go 5-7 years.
Even though I have figured out some of what my PC has, I really do not know technically what I am talking about so am at the mercy of other's help.  Are there any solutions that might work short of buying a new computer?
I also have taken 40th anniversary photos for some people and am waiting to give them as a free gift since I am not a professional at all.  I am hoping to get through this problem soon so that I can provide some nice memories for them.
I have not gotten any further than trying to adjust 1 picture.  I have no comments on uploading speed, since I did that while still in LR3.
Thank you for your time and help.

I'm running LR with no speed issues on an Intel 17-860 quad core with about the same performance as your AMD Phenom II X6 1045T Processor. My system is also an HP, which originally had a single 1TB 7200 HDD. I've since added a second 2TB Black Caviar HDD, which provided no significant difference in LR's performance.
AMD processors do not implement hyper-threading and don't need it. I'd start debug by process of elimination:
    1) Disconnect all externally attached USB, FireWire, or other externally connected devices except keyboard, mouse, and your single 1280 x1024 display. This includes all externally attached memory card readers, phones, ipads, etc.
    2) Reboot and logon as Administrator.
    3) Remove your Internet connection and turn off all Antivirus and firewall programs.
    4) Open LR and under Catalog Settings set 'Standard Preview Size' to 1440 (slightly larger than your display width). Under the Metadata tab here make sure 'Automatically Write changes into XMP is NOT checked.
    4) Create a 'New Catalog,' Create a new folder and add about 10 raw image file copies to it for testing, and Import it into the new catalog. In the Import module make sure under File Handling 'Render Previews' has 1:1 selected. Wait until all Preview building has completed in the Library module.
Try editing these image files inside the new catalog as you were previously.

  • Lightroom 5.5 Import from Catalog *very* slow performance.

Importing from a second catalog from a shoot is *very* slow with the last version or couple of versions of Lightroom.  It's been about 20 minutes and the import is moving glacially slow and is only about 20% done.
Here are as many stats as I have:
iMac 27" 3.5Ghz Core i7, 32G of ram, 3T fusion drive (the late 2013 model maxed out)
Master catalog has 117,000 images in it.
The catalog I'm importing has 948 images in it.
CPU use during the import is 100% used by lightroom (note that the multiple CPUs can go to more than 100% so this means I think that one CPU is maxed out, though LR can sometimes take 500% of my CPUs during an export)
Lightroom is using 4.2G of RAM (10G free in activity monitor)
Hard drive is fairly full, but still has 366G free on it (so about 10%)
Lightroom Mobile sync is enabled (not on this folder I don't think) but says "service unavailable" at this point.
Lightroom is fully up to date (5.5) on both iMac and laptop (also a mac in case that matters).  Both are up to date with the latest OS software.
    How I did it was:
Export the shoot as a new catalog on my iMac
Transfer it to my laptop (smart previews only, no masters)
    Edit images, metadata, etc
Transfer the entire folder back (.lrcat, previews, smart previews) to iMac
In my master catalog do an import from catalog
Waited for ages for checking for dupes (which I can understand with such a big catalog)
Selected to import all, changing metadata and develop edits, and selecting to put new images in the folder (not sure why it asked as there weren't any new images)
The last time I did an import I started it and then went out somewhere so I didn't notice how long it took, but this seems completely crazy.  In the time it's taken to write this up it's now about 20 minutes later and the progress bar is maybe at the 33% range.  It's still working away, it's just crazy crazy slow.
Anything to help out or debug would be greatly appreciated.  I suspect it's pure size of the catalog, but 120k isn't outside the realm of what I've heard people say works fine, or maybe the Fusion drive (maybe the OS is trying to move files around behind the scenes)?
Either way this didn't seem to be an issue until the last couple of versions (I haven't gone and re-installed 5.4 or 5.3 to check) and it's starting to really frustrate me

    Hi Jim,
Great suggestion! It opens perfectly fine on its own. I even went as far as re-exporting it once it loaded but am still experiencing the same issue. That same catalog loads perfectly fine on my assistant's iMac.
I can't really think about anything that changed in my environment with the exception of a new Bootcamp partition to run windows on an external Thunderbolt HD but I doubt this is related.
I'm open to any suggestions while I am trying this again... 10 minutes of 'Checking for changed and duplicate photos'.

  • Very Slow preview rendering for lightroom 5 on import

I am seeing very very slow rendering of preview images only when using the import function in lightroom 5. By slow, I mean for a shoot of 60 shots in raw, it could take 30 minutes before I can preview them all in the pane to see which ones I want to actually import. This was not an issue with lightroom 4. It is not an issue when using lightroom. Previews are fast there, even for images I've never pulled up before.
My hardware is a PC, with an intell i7 chip, and 16 gig of memory. My nvidia graphics card has the latest drivers.
I've seen a few others reporting this issue, so I'm trying to log it as a bug. Even though the dial up support text on the adobe lightroom says available 24/7, it now plays a voice recording that says only available m-f.
    Brad

I'm having the same problem using Windows 7 (64b). I just took a shoot over the weekend for a significant birthday event. Now I can't load the photos. The work-around doesn't work as the program freezes before I get the chance to select the camera under "files".
I recently upgraded from 3.6 to 5 as I was also noticing a slowdown in the import function. That turned out to be a bad move I think. I also deliberately cleaned up the CF card and removed all my video recordings, as this seems to be reported as part of the problem, but to no avail.
This seems to be a pretty major bug to have in a major release that's been around for a while now, that I'm expected to pay for, and no sign of a resolution to date!

  • Very slow 64 bit Lightroom Windows 7?

I've recently switched over to Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium, running 8GB DDR3 RAM, 1GB ATI Radeon 4800 series video card, 1920px monitor and have found the performance in Lightroom 3.4.1 much slower than I did on Windows XP, 32 bit running 2GB of RAM with a 128MB motherboard card (laptop to boot).
Why is this happening? The main issues are extremely slow imports (minimal previews set as default when importing), very delayed thumbnail (preview) rendering (the grid view sometimes sits with half the thumbnails rendered, and half not rendered, then all of a sudden, a minute or two later, all will be rendered...), and slow, in-consistent 1:1 rendering. I've tried all the different combos when it comes to preview rendering but nothing does the trick. I've even tried switching my 10GB ACR cache to different drives but nothing does the trick.
Could this be an issue with the Catalyst Control Center (software controling my video driver)? It's all I've got left to consider but would very much like a resolution.
    Thanks in advance.

Just to be clear, the 10GB cache is LR3's cache (not sure if it's the same as ACR cache...confusing!)

recently bought a samsung NX30 camera which came with lightroom 5, after several hours of googling i got it setup properly with the correct camera raw to be able to access my raw images. I found my old laptop was very slow when processing the hundreds of images I usually take on a weekly basis.  I bought a new faster laptop but when I looked for the cd with the software and serial I could not find it in the Xmas clutter.  I downloaded a trial version of lightroom and got it working on my new laptop. Is there a way to access the serial number from my previously installed version and insert it into the trail version to make it work for me?
    Myron

    Mea culpa
While i registered all my cs2 thru 6 versions and my lightroom 2 thru 4 versions and recorded the serials and saved the adobe registration emails.  Since this came as a freebee with the camera i neglected this vital step.  I have the instslled version on my old laptop but want to install it on my new one.  Thanks to Jim Hess I got the serial so all is well in my world and I will register it with ADOBE

  • Lightroom 3.3 speed, very very slow

Does anyone know why Lightroom 3.3 on a Mac is so slow?
The new version 3 was suppose to be faster than version 2. I purchased a new MacPro 12 core with 16GB of ram and with nothing else running, LR 3.3 is still as slow as it was in version 2.
I select multiple images make changes with sync metadata on, and it take minutes before changes show up. My activity monitor shows hardly any activity.
Anyone have any thoughts on why LR3 is still very slow?

    rmherzog,
Actually, there are performance issues with multi-core machines (such as yours and mine) that are being researched at Adobe.  Hard to pinpoint the problem so I suspect the answer will be a long time coming.  Some functions seem to take advantage of all of my cores (like exporting) but other functions (like local editing and spot removal) are hit and miss.  LR3 on the same machine is probably always going to be a bit slower than 2.x despite the advertising due to the change in algorithms; however, switching from a quad to a 12-core machine should ultimately over-compensate for that.  I have a PC so it isn't limited to Mac machines.
I was able to increase performance quite a bit by turning off hyper-threading (that bios feature that makes the computer think it has twice the number of cores that it really has) and certain software that loaded with the monitor drivers.  Now it thinks it has 8 cores instead of 16 and somehow uses those 8 more efficiently than the hypertheaded 16.  In any case, depending on how Mac's work you might look into that.  There are other suggestions in a similar thread relating to performance posted by Tom from Adobe that you might want to consider as well.
    Jeff
PS - strangely enough, the slowest files on my machine are JPEG scans.  Local editing can be quite burdonsome for me with these files whereas the RAW files seem to be only mildly sluggish but very consistent.

  • Lightroom 3.6 suddenly went very slow

Lightroom 3.6 suddenly went very slow to respond, after running reasonably fast for a few months.
Process Explorer shows that I have plenty of spare CPU and memory capacity.
    I have no malware.
Running Win XP with a quad processor.
THe other day it went fast again for a while, but then reverted to being slow.
    Please help! - John

I am having the same problem running on a MacbookPro OSX 10.7.4 2.2 GHz processor and 16 gb memory. seems to have started this issue a week or so ago.

  • Very slow performance in Lightroom 3??

I just upgraded to Lightroom  3.0 and I am very suprised how slow it is!?!  I don't have a very large library and I'm on two reasonably new computers yet the difference from Lightroom 2 (snappy performance) to Lightroom 3 (VERY sluggish) is quite suprising..
I'm using it on a XP and a Vista system with the same results...
    Is anyone else experiencing this???
    Thanks,
    Ken

I've noticed a slow down in performance with Lightroom 3 as well. As far a looking around the forum for older threads, ...found older lightroom 1 and 2 threads.
Your Title "Very Slow Performance in Lightroom 3??" fits what I'm looking for just perfectly.

  • Lightroom speed - very slow

I have a catalog that is very slow displaying previews. Often for several minutes it only shows a blank grey preview in the filmstrip and the main previews are very blotchy.
I currently have about 24,000 photos in the catalog. Is the number of photos the problem if so what is a practical limit?
My laptop is a dual core pentium with 2gb or ram.
    Thanks,
    Ed

Generally the previews are much slower than in the past in all views. However it is REALLY bad when it first starts. I should also mention that the files are stored on an external USB 2.0 drive.
Someone mentioned letting lightroom generate previews. I have a few questions about that. I thought most files have an embedded preview that lightroom should use by default. I normally import my camera raw files into lightroom and convert to DNG at import, sometimes I will shoot in jpg. The files that were working the slowest on the preview are .tiff but others do it as well just not as bad. Also seems like I read when lightroom generates previews they are only kept for 30 days after last accessed time. Is this all correct?
    Thanks,
    Ed

  • Lightroom LR4 - very slow Keyword set updating

Lightroom LR4 - very slow Keyword set updating   1] keyword an image with some keywords from a keyword set. Those keywiords are highlighted in keyword set  2] select next image  3] wait about 4 to 5 seconds for highlighted keywords to be non highlighted. ARRGHHH  the problem with this, is that yo ucannot use the keyword set to apply these keywords to the newly selected image until they are not highlighted any more.  yet another area where lightroom is Slooooooooooow!!

Hi John, Did you solve the problem of slow update times associated with entering a keyword tag? I too am having this problem. During my most recent keyword entry it took 45 sec to add "Arizona, Hacienda Del Desierto, Lucy's Warbler, Spring " into the "Keyword Tags" box. During this time the box indicates "working...". The time to update has been getting progressively longer.
    I have LR4 4.4 and I'm running on a 3.1 GHz IMac OS X 10.8.4, 16 GB RAM.

  • Lightroom Develop Mode very slow in responding to commands

When I am trying to get a photo ready to print and am in the Develop window, the response time when I try to make adjustments to the phots are not acceptable. Very, very slow and almost impossible to accomplish what I need to do in order to get the photo into the print mode. I have a hang up somewhere but I am at a loss to know how to correct this problem. Any help greatly appreciated

I've got this exact same problem and I've tried a list of things to do. I've been on the internet researching this out for two days and nothing has worked.  I have 3 sessions I need to get done and this slowness is unacceptable.  LR used to run very smooth and fast and with in the past week its been a dog.  It has to be something related in the catalog area.   I have 13000 and the catalog is a mess.  I don't understand the catalog one bit, I'd rather just have access to folders and upload that way instead of messing with the headache of a dang catalog.........did I say I hate the catalog?
Things I've tried with no results:
    optimized catalog
moving RAW cache from external to internal drive
increasing RAW cache from 2G to 20G
preview rendering 1:1 (I really don't understand the purpose of this at all....after waiting for an hours to render 500 photos it did nothing to improve)
Moved a session of photos that I have been trying to work on from my external drive to my desktop (500 photos 10G worth) internal drive
    reboot PC
    reboot LR3
    disabled unused startup programs
my PC is scheduled to defrag once a month
attempt to update Intel graphics driver but there was no new update to download
close all programs and run LR3 by itself
I may have failed to list something but I think thats it.  I'm running Win7, Intell Duo Core 2 T6500 2.10Ghz processor, 320HD with about 70% free.  I only use my HD to run programs and a external 320HD for image storage and retrieving. This particular drive has about 30% free, maybe less, but like I said before I've disconnected the drive and tried developing from my internal drive with the same results.
I'm out of things to try.........shoot to them over to me and I'll try it.  I'm desperate.  I'd love to dump the entire catalog and start over.  Its so unorganized and I never can find what I'm looking for anyways......I hate that catalog with a passion but I love everything else about LR when its working.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
The test works on OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later. I don't recommend running it on older versions of OS X. It will do no harm, but it won't do much good either.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of it have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message. See, for example, this discussion.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. Try to test under conditions that reproduce the problem, as far as possible. For example, if the computer is sometimes, but not always, slow, run the test during a slowdown.
You may have started up in "safe" mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, a series of lines will appear in the Terminal window like this:
    [Process started]
Part 1 of 8 done at … sec
Part 8 of 8 done at … sec
The test results are on the Clipboard.
            Please close this window.
    [Process completed]
The intervals between parts won't be exactly equal, but they give a rough indication of progress. The total number of parts may be different from what's shown here.
Wait for the final message "Process completed" to appear. If you don't see it within about ten minutes, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, press the key combination control-C or command-period to stop it and go to the next step. You'll have incomplete results, but still something.
    12. When the test is complete, or if you stopped it because it was taking too long, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
