Lightroom vs photoshop cs6

Hi all
I am about to upgrade to CS6 (from CS3), and I see LR has come down in price. I don't currentlty have it, so my question is - is there any point/advantage/functionality in it worth having & paying for that you don't get in CS6/ACR ?
thx
MJ

My understanding is that Lightroom is a very powerful organizational tool that will also provide quick and actually quite robust tools for adjusting image color, contrast, etc. The resulting images will usually not differ too much in content.   Also, to note, the changes made in lightroom are never made to the actual image but stored in a separate database, so the original image is always intact.  Any changes to the image can be removed or modified at any time in the workflow.  Great for tracking and processing digital photographs.
Photoshop is quite different in that it is a very powerful image manipulator that allows the user to literally re-assemble an image, as well as adjust color correction etc.   Amazing compositions can be created in Photoshop that go way beyond the original image.  But if you make changes to a file, it will permanently change that file.  Photoshop also has no way to organize images.  These software packages are not meant to compete with each other, but rather complement.
If you would like to organize a large number of images, and efficiently color correct photos, etc and have the option to return the files to original condition or anywhere in between, i would recommend Lightroom.
If you want to color correct, etc in a more detailed, but slower workflow, but also create compositions or modify any content in the images, get Photoshop or ideally get both.

  • Lightroom 4/Photoshop CS6 Hardware Considerations

I'm going to be building a kick *** processing machine for lightroom 4/Photoshop CS6 on Windows 7.
I'd like to know the optimum processing cores for CPU and optimum video cards.  Is there a spec that I can find that will tell me how lightroom 4 and photoshop CS6 use CPU processing cores, ram and video cards.
    What can you tell me?

You will find more material regarding hardware on the Photoshop Forum.
Others will probably make recommendations for CPU. I have a quad Xeon and am happy with it - although it's not the latest Xeon.
RAM: With 12 GB you will be fine - unless you regularly work on huge image files  in Photoshop. I have 12 GB and Lr rarely goes up to 10 GB.
I would recommend that you do some research for "workstations". Workstation computers are workhorses from the ground up including all hardware components. It's no use to have a fast processor and lots of RAM when the other hardware components can't keep up with speed or data throughput. Also workstation computers are built with expansion in mind - more RAM, slots for additional cards, etc.
Hard drives: Get a system with 3 internal drives; they don't need to be huge - 500 GB is fine. Get an SSD for your OS, Photoshop, and Lr.
If money is not an issue get all hard drives as SSDs. But don't skimp - a 40 GB SSD does you no good - it's way too small.
With today's RAM and CPU's it's the hard drives that are becoming the bottle neck. As you know conventional hard drives have spinning disks and the reading/writing takes time.
Lr is constantly reading / writing to the catalog; it also uses the Lr cache. If you have only one hard drive the read- and write cycles for Lr can pile up and your fine and expensive CPU sits idle waiting until the reading / writing is done. Keep in mind that your system also reads and writes to hard drive at the same time.
Therefore I use 3 internal drives: Drive C for OS, Photoshop, LR; drive D for Photoshop scratch disk, Lr cache, OS paging file; drive E for Lr catalog.
You probably want to use external hard drives. I recommend eSata drives: they are fast and reliable. So on your system you need at least one eSata outlet port - better two. If two are not available you can buy an eSata card (costs about $ 50) which gives you 2 outlets.
Video Card: don't get taken in by gaming cards. They're not what you want for Lr and Photoshop. Get a workstation class card that is designed to run 24/7.
Monitor: get the best and largest you can afford. Get a monitor specifically for photographers. And don't forget you monitor calibration; you need the hardware (spectrometer) and the software. Some monitors (Eizo, LaCie, Nec) come with hardware calibration.

  • 32 Bit HDR Problem With Lightroom and Photoshop CS6

    Hello all:
In following Julieanne's Adobe TV topic here ->  http://tv.adobe.com/watch/the-complete-picture-with-julieanne-kost/quick-tip-creating-32bi t-hdr-images-in-lr-41/ a problem arises when trying to save from Photoshop CS 6. According to Julieanne you hit ctrl-s so that PS saves the HDR image and then it should show up in Lightroom. What I have found is that hitting crtrl-s saves it as a PSD file which does automatically show up in Lightroom, however Lightroom but  can't read it. If I do a save-as, and select TIFF as the extension Lightroom will not automatically see the TIFF file. I have to synchronize the folder in order to have Lightroom import it.
Why would Lightroom automatically see a PSD file (that is of no use) and not see the TIFF file?
Is there a setting in PS that will change the preferences to save as a TIFF instead of a PSD file?
Using Lightroom 4.2 and Photoshop CS6.
    Thanks,
    Terry

Go to LR's preferences > External Editing tab and change the top pop-up to TIFF and you should be all set.

  • Compatibilité Camera Raw 8 + LightRoom 5 + PHotoshop CS6

    Bonjour,
    Système Mac Os X 10.8.5
Nouvel ordinateur Imac 27 /3,5 GHz / 16 go RAM
    Merci AlmaLucie

    Hi
I encountered the same problem. No Radial Filter button after installing Raw 8.7 on CS6. Any idea how to solve this problem?

  • Considering Purchase of Wacom Cintiq 27 HD Touch - Questions about Touch Functionality in Lightroom 5 & Photoshop CS6

I am considering purchase of a Wacom Cintiq 27 HD Touch monitor. I have a few questions relative to two Adobe programs and their use of "touch" functionality - Lightroom 5.7 and Photoshop CS6 running on Windows 7.
    1. Have the problems related to touch functionality in Photoshop CS6 and Lightroom 5 been resolved that you see on this and Wacom's forums from a year ago?
    2. If so, is there enough value gained via touch functionality in Lightroom 5 and Photoshop CS6 to warrant the $500 difference in price between the Cintiq 27 HD vs HD Touch? (I realize that this is a subjective question based on the abundance of one's cash.)
    3. I plan to stay with CS6 as long as humanly possible to avoid a monthly software subscription, BUT I do wonder if purchasing the HD Touch now may provide additional touch functionality in future versions of these software products that are not currently available. (So this is a pie in the sky sort of question.)
    Thanks,
    Kent

Photoshop Touch support is added in CC 2014.2.2.  However Wacom tablets like the Intuos Pro with touch can be use with prior versions of Photoshop and the Wacom Tablets Configurator can customized the tablets touch features to be used with Photoshop.  I do not use LR but I'm sure the same would be true for it. You can configure setting for many applications. The device driver knows which application its interfacing with and uses the setting set for each..
I disable most of touch when using Photoshop.  The Main reason I have a tablet is Photoshop Brush type tools. Like eraser, clone stamp, etc nothing is better then a pen when it come to creating layer mask.  For most programs I still use a mouse and I use the Keyboard, Mouse and Pen with Photoshop....
I never wanted a Cintig I like not having my hand  between my eyes and work. I not an artist though.

  • Trouble moving from lightroom to Photoshop CS6 raw editor

I am having trouble moving from my lightroom 4 to Photoshop camera raw. I can move directly to Photoshop but would like to use the raw editor in photoshop CS6 and not the lightroom editor

    Hi,
You could use Photo>Edit In>Open as Smart Object in Photoshop
(or right click on the photo and Edit In>Open as Smart Object in Photoshop)
Then double click on the smart object thumbnail in the layers panel to open camera raw.

  • Problem downloading the student edition of Lightroom and Photoshop cs6

I purchased the new lightroom and photoshop in August 2013. Because I purchased the student one I had to send a picture of my student ID card to prove I was a student and a bunch of other things to say which school I go to. Its now Feb 2014 and neither of them are downloaded to my computer and I never got a confirmation email back from adobe.
When It gives me the option to put my serial number in the boxes I always run short.
Has anyone else had this problem? please help me. I don't think I can return them now.
    Thank you

You need to contact Adobe Support either by chat or via phone when you have serial number and activation issues.

  • Photoshop cs6 and new MacBook Pro

I want to upgrade to a new MacBook Pro  I will use it for photography hobby to process 36 meg files from Nikon D800E, I will be running Lightroom 5 , Photoshop CS6 along width other related plug ins, I am NOT a gamer do I need the discrete graphics card or is the integrated card sufficient?
Thank you for any input you can provide.

I found this somewhat-dated information at the Adobe site: http://www.adobe.com/content/dam/Adobe/en/products/creativesuite/production/cs6/ pdfs/adobe-hardware-performance-whitepaper.pdf
It seems to indicate that it might be wise to have a video card if you do things like video editing.

  • Liquify photoshop CS6 stopped working.

    Good Morning,
I have Lightroom 4, Photoshop CS6 and am trying to edit a photograph in Photoshop using liquify. I did a test on a jpeg photo the night before and it worked just fine, I was able to maniplulate the file. However last night when I tried to edit a file from lightroom or any jpeg file now with liquify it doesn't do anything. An example of this is that when I open the same jpeg as I did the night beofre and select for example the hand tool nothing happens to the image as I pull on parts of the image. I have changed the brush size and the pressure settings but no change. Any ideas? I am really new to photoshop.
    Thanks,

First make sure all the Liquify settings over on the right of the panel look correct. Change some if they look correct and play with the tools and see if changing settings fixes the problem.
When Photoshop starts to behave badly often the only to get it back inyo its nor working condition is to reset your userid Photoshop Preferences. Be forewarned if you do that preferences you has set will revert to Adobe default settings.  So you may want to backup your settings before resetting then.  You could also try restoring the from a system backup you may have from before the time it stopped working correctly.

  • "Edit in Adobe Photoshop CS6" no longer works in Lightroom 5.3

I have LR5.3 and PS CS6. Since I've updated camera Raw (8.3 it think), my files won't open when I want to edit them in Photoshop from the “Edit in…” feature of Lightroom. I don't see the window saying "Open in PS with Lightroom edits" that would give me options whether I want to edit a copy or edit copy with changes etc...
I have searched extensively and have not found a resolution.  There is one thread that suggested something to do with addon for Photoshop and I checked all that stuff and there are no addons.  I recently moved to all Mac platform so this is pretty much a clean build.
It did work prior to updating Photoshop CS6 with the "check for updates" feature.  Once I did that it broke...

    Haucke, the behaviour is this:
if you want to edit a raw file in PS and the ACR version in PS is the same as the version in Lr that you are sending from the raw will be opened directly in PS with no prompts with Lightroom settings applied. It will be saved from PS as a TIFF or PSD as your preferences are made.
A non raw file will have the prompt for a new file with edits or the original.
So from what I understand you say you are seeing, Lightroom and PS are working as designed.
You can see from my screen shot here how this DNG is rendered from Lr into PS as a DNG.....
    Haucke wrote:
Actually I think you are mis-understanding what I am attempting to communicate...
Two weeks ago it was all working on my windows machine.  The prompt is necissary because it should be asking me if I want Lightroom edits or not after which it would send over a tiff or the other format depending on what I selected in preferences over to PS for editing. When I choose a photo in Lightroom that is Raw with Lightroom adjustments it should be asking me.  Either way Photoshop is opening but no photo comes up unless the original is jpg.  I used it in Windows 7 x64 and worked fine.  Worked fine with Mac prior to last update.  After last update it broke.
By the way, I am not a software engineer but have been involved with Lightroom since the first beta.... hopefully we can work together....

If I'm in LIghtroom 5, and try to Edit in Photoshop CS6, I always get the following message: "This version of Lightroom may require the Photoshop Camera Raw plug-in version 8.6 for full compatibility." But I have updated to 8.6 and have no remaining updates. How can I fix this?
If I click "Open Anyway" or "Render using Lightroom", I get the following message:
"Adobe Photoshop CS6 cannot be opened because of a problem.
Check with the developer to make sure Adobe Photoshop CS6 works with this version of OS X. You may need to reinstall the application. Be sure to install any available updates for the application and OS X."
Please tell me what to do so I can edit from Lightroom to Photoshop.

In Photoshop, if you choose Help - About Plug-in... - Camera Raw, does it say 8.6?
Seems to me there was some hiccup they found in the update process, which prompted this:
Camera Raw updates cannot be applied
I honestly don't know if the problem could apply to 8.6 as well, which is why I asked you to check to make very sure you really got it.

  • From Lightroom 4.4 RGB1998 - open in photoshop CS6 - embedded colour profile changing to SRGB regardless of Lightroom export settings.

    Hi,
I'm experiencing an issue regarding lightroom 4.4 - Photoshop 13.0.6x64
This has just started happening in the last few days, I have not changed my settings etc ?
My external editing preferences in the Lightroom preferences menu for the edit in Adobe Photoshop CS6 command are
    as follows,
    File format    - TIFF
    Color Space - AdobeRGB (1998)
    Bit Depth      - 16 bits
I run CS6 working space in ColorMatch RGB at the request of the Pro lab I use & have done for years with great results. Before the file opens in CS6 I
get the Embedded Profile Mismatch pop up & I alway select use the embedded profile ( AdobeRGB1998) instead of the working space.
The mismatch menu always used to read,
    Embedded : AdobeRGB 1998
    Working : ColorMatch RGB
For some unknown reason every file I now open through Lightroom into CS6 - The Embedded Profile Mismatch warning is telling me that all my files
have an embedded  SRGB IEC61966-2.1 profile ?
I can't get any of my files into photoshop with my normal AdobeRGB1998 embedded profile anymore regardless of Lightroom's external editing settings?
Seems they are being converted regardless ? have tried removing CS6 preferences Doc from the folder but not making any differences. Even my old files
that I know are RGB1998 embedded are turning up in CS6 converted to SRGB IEC61966-2.1 profile ?
    I'm running a Mac 10.9.4, Lightroom 4.4 & Photoshop CS6 - 13.0.6 x64
Any ideas on how this started & how I can sort it out ?
    Thanks,
    Will.

Is ACR being used to render the images instead of LR?  Open an image in the Camera Raw plug-in in Photoshop and check the Options at the bottom of the ACR plug-in that include bit-depth and color profile.

  • Can't "Edit in Photoshop CS6" in Lightroom 4.1, after upgrading Photoshop from CS4

I recently installed Creative Suite 6 Production Premium, and uninstalled Photoshop CS4, but Lightroom seems to be confused and doesn't show "Edit in Photoshop CS6" as an option.
Lightroom seems to be aware that Photoshop CS4 is no longer installed: the first command under "Edit In" is "Edit in C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS4 (64 Bit)\Photoshop...", and all the Photoshop-specific "edit in" commands (smart object, layers, etc.) are unavailable.  I tried adding Photoshop CS6 as a secondary editor, but this makes Lightroom export a TIFF to PS rather than opening the file in Camera Raw.
I'm not sure what I have to do to convince Lightroom that I have Photoshop CS6 installed.  Any ideas?
    Thanks!

Well, I had searched the forums before and couldn't locate an answer, but ended up finding an answer through the "more like this" links at the right.  The CS4 path was stored in the Windows registry; I had to update it to CS6 and it's now working perfectly.
Just in case anyone else comes across this problem, here's the forum post:
