Lightroom VS Photoshop Elements for Beginners

Hey Everyone!
I am creating a website for beginners on computers and other home electronics and I am going to do a post about what the best program is to get for a beginner at photo editing. I have seen so many people using Photoshop Elements to start out with but many people who have gotten editing programs prefer Lightroom and use it and say its a better program to begin with... Do you have any suggestions on which I should tell poeple to go with? Here is a link to my blog http://cowtechtutor.com so that you know the kind of posting I've been doing also if you have any suggestions on how I can improve the design it would be awesome! Thanks very much!
Andrew

They each have strength and weaknesses. LR for example has the same full RAW processor as full Photoshop, but doesn't have the full range of image editing features.
There isn't a simple answer. I think you would be better off reviewing both and pointing out the differences so that your blog audience can make an informed decision for themselves.
Cheers,
Neale

  • Lightroom or Photoshop Elements for administrating huge number of photos?

    Dear photo experts,
at home, we have a huge number of photos we took over years. We are looking for a software able to organize all of them. We currently have:
    Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 (Mac)
    Adobe Lightroom 3 (Mac)
However, for organizing photos we so far use none of them but a third software (here, we are not happy about how it handles our huge catalog of photos).
Our photos are stored on a server (network attached storage), organized by date and event.
I read that Adobe Photoshop Elements cannot organize photos stored on a network drive.
    Now my questions:
    - Can Adobe Lightroom organize photos stored on a network drive?
    - Is Adobe Lightroom capable to organize a huge amount of photos in one single catalog (separating them via tags)?
    What are your experiences?
    Thanks a lot!
    JMickey

I read that Adobe Photoshop Elements cannot organize photos stored on a network drive.
I thought the opposite was true
Can Adobe Lightroom organize photos stored on a network drive?
As we say here in Rochester, NY, YES it can
Is Adobe Lightroom capable to organize a huge amount of photos in one single catalog (separating them via tags)?
Yes, this is one of Lightroom's strengths
    What are your experiences?
I use Lightroom for all of my photo management (yes, I said ALL). I never use the operating system for photo management. Lightroom works great. People here in this forum who have much larger catalogs than I do (over 1/4 million photos) also use Lightroom to manage their photos.

  • Which photoshop is for beginners and not the costly full version?

which photoshop is for beginners and not the costly full version?

Depending on what you want to achieve, there is also Lightroom 4.
When comparing CS6, Lightroom, and Elements, Adobe says:
Q:  How do Adobe Photoshop, Photoshop Extended, Photoshop Elements, and Photoshop Lightroom software differ?
A:  Photoshop Elements 11 (US$99) is designed for people who are just getting started with digital photo editing, and delivers powerful yet easy-to-use options that help you organize, edit, create, share, and help protect your personal photos.
Photoshop CS6 (US$699) is the professional standard for creating and manipulating powerful images, and Photoshop CS6 Extended (US$999) delivers everything in Photoshop plus tools for creating and editing 3D images and objects.
Photoshop Lightroom 4 (US$149) addresses the workflow needs of professional and serious amateur photographers, enabling them to import, process, organize, and showcase large volumes of digital photographs quickly, or develop a single image.
And they also have a page that neatly summarizes the best uses for each product. This article gets even deeper into the comparison. I hope this is helpful!

  • Lightroom Or Photoshop Elements 9

I am an amateur photographer and have used Photoshop Elements for a number of years. I currently have version 7 and I find the program extremely cumbersome and not intuitive. I know I should spend more time learning the program but what I am looking for is a straightforward easy/quick way to manipulate photos. I want to batch process my files, crop, fix red eye, adjust color and contrast, and add vignetting etc... Does anyone know if Photoshop Elements 9 is easier then version 7 or is Lightroom more intuitive?

I second this.  I switched from another editor to LR3, and used PSE9 trial as you do, as a plug in for the 10% of photos that need a little extra (complex cloning etc.).
I have PSE6, but 9 trial sold me, so now that it's $49 (until Nov 30, $99 - $20 mail in - $30 "save2010" promo code) I am pulling the trigger on it right after I make this post.
I, like you have Martin Evening's LR3 book and it is EXCELLENT (I'm about 3/4 the way through), much better than muddling through trying to figure things out on my own.  The book really lets me understand what is happening, and has great tips to get the most out of the program.
Martin, if you are lurking here, I must say well done! (I think I see Jeff Schewe here occasionally, perhaps he can pass that along!)
I will check out that PSE9 book that you have on your list next.
So, to the OP, I would say: BOTH!  LR3 for organizing and 90% of your edits, and PSE9 for anything that requires pixel level editing.  Both are on sale now until Nov 30th (LR3 is $100 off @$199 and PSE9 can be had for $49, so really, it's kinda a no brainer)
Cheers, and best of luck with your decision.

  • I am trying to chose an upgrade from iPhoto to either lightroom or photoshop elements 10

I am trying to chose an upgrade from iphoto to either lightroom or photoshope elements 10, and would appreciate any comments/advice
    Thanks for your time
    Sandy

Elements and LIghtroom are different categories of app. Elements is a pretty straight up editor. Lightroom is database driven photo manager with lossless processing. Simply, Lightoom would be the upgrade to iPhoto.
That said, there is no upgrade path from iPhoto to these apps. You will need to export from iPhoto to the Finder - a process that means you will lose something of the work you have done in iPhoto already.
If your reason for upgrading is to add editing power then you can use Elements as an extenral editor to iPhoto:
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
If the Limitation you see in iPhoto is primarily photo managment then have a look at Aperture. Half the price of Lightroom, much better manager, complete with OS integration.
If you're shooting Raw then Lightroom or Aperture are the way to go.
You can set Elements as an external editor in either.

Hi I have the old photo shop elements 10 on my computer and want to update and was wondering what the differences between photoshop, lightroom and photoshop elements are?
Also when I upgrade does it have to be with a monthly membership or can I just purchase the product out right like you use to be able?

You cannot "update" from what you have to any of the applications you mention. It will have to be a straight purchase or subscription at full price.
Photoshop is a professional level application that makes no apologies for its very long and steep learning curve.
Lightroom is all about volume, and very light editing.
The Photoshop Elements forum is at:
    https://forums.adobe.com/community/photoshop_elements/content
Remember, you are not addressing Adobe here in the user forums.  You are requesting help from volunteers users just like you who give their time free of charge. No one has any obligation to answer your questions.
I do not know where there is such a comparison table as you seek, but someone else might, or you can google.

  • My new Nikon d610 NEF files will not download to my photoshop lightroom 4 & photoshop elements 11

I recently purchased a Nikon d610. I have lightroom 4 & photoshop elements 11. Neither fully updated software will read the raw NEF files from the SD card. What can I do about this?

    Hi,
The D610 was only announced at the beginning of this month. Adobe do not get advance notice of cameras and have to wait until they get their hands on a copy of the camera. Then it takes them about 2 to 3 months before they can release a new version of camera raw.
You will have wait until they have completed their work but I don't expect that will get an update for version 11 - Adobe normally only supply updates for current versions. A new DNG converter should be produced that you could use.
In the meantime, you will have to use the Nikon software.
These are my thoughts as a user and not a Adobe statement.
    Regards,
    Brian

  • How can I syncronize Lightroom and Photoshop Elements data?

How can I syncronize Lightroom and Photoshop Elements data?

    Hi Palsaran,
As i understood, your requirement is to POST data from UI to backend.
The above code you given is not correct if you want to use model based implementation.
In UI5 you don't need to do an explicit Ajax call, for which we can use Models like OData, JSON etc.
For your JSON example, you can use like,
    var oModel = new sap.ui.model.json.JSONModel();
    var oData = "YOUR JSON DATA";
    oModel.setData(oData)
    oModel.loadData(yourURL/Entityset,"POST");
For ref, you can use the below link
JsDoc Report - SAP UI development Toolkit for HTML5 - API Reference - sap.ui.model.json.JSONModel
    Thanks

I have just installed Photoshop Elements for a MAC. MY photos were in iPhoto, I have 47,000 pictures and my drive on my Mac laptop is not large enough. I store my photos in iPhoto on an external drive. Can I store all my photos on an external drive when using Photoshop Elements? If so, in what format should they be stored in? I do I move them from iPhoto to the new storage location? How do I call them up in organizer? And how do I call them up to Edit? I do not want to store any pictures on my Apple Mac laptop. I want to store pictures on several external devices.

Yes you can store images on an external hard dive and have them referenced in Organizer. It’s best to export copies to separate folders/subfolders and that will ensure iPhoto does not get corrupted.
Alternatively you could continue to use iPhoto with the Elements Editor set up in the iPhoto prefs as your external editing app. Then there is no need to use Organizer and no need to duplicate your images.
You can then call up photos directly from iPhoto as normal with the additional option e.g.
Double-click on a thumbnail to edit in iPhoto editor.
Control (right) - click on a thumbnail to edit in the elements app.

All you should have to do is to go to the Adobe web site http://www.adobe.com.
Sign in with your Adobe ID and Password.
Then go the web page's Search field and type in "My Orders".
Follow the "My Orders" link to your orders, find the order corresponding to the version in question.
There should be an opportunity there to download a new set of installation files.
Do you have your purchased serial number? If not, I am not sure if it will be included in the "My Orders"
area. But, it should be in the "My Products" which you can access from the Search field. Click on the
name of your product in "My Products", and the serial number should be revealed.
Please let us know the outcome.
    Thank you.

  • I am with a university and i purchased the adobe photoshop elements for a faculty member of mine, how can he download it when it is in my name but he is the one needing it?

i am with a university and i purchased the adobe photoshop elements for a faculty member of mine, how can he download it when it is in my name but he is the one needing it?

There is nothing to prevent him from downloading and installing the trial version (Adobe - Download free trial version Adobe Photoshop Elements 12 | Adobe).  At the point all you need to do is provide him with the serial number so that he can activate it.  If the intent is that he be the owner of the software then you might want to see about transfering the license...

  • Anyone using Photoshop Elements for Fashion Design

    Hi,
I'm looking for software to help me in the Fashion Design Industry. I want to use it for my sketches.   I am a beginner when it comes to Fashion Design and have no experience using Photoshop software.  I had read somewhere that Photoshop Elements is a less expensive version of Photoshop.  I read that it does 90% of what Photoshop does without the higher end pre -press printing capabilities.  I also read that there is a book that will help you with the other 10% to achieve the full Photoshop capabilities.
1a.  I would like to know is anyone using Photoshop Elements for Fashion Design?
1b.  If yes, please explain in details what exactly are you using it for?
2a.  Is there more than one version of Photoshop Elements?
2b.  If so, what version do you recommend?
    3.   How easy is it to use?
    4.  Do you know of any books you can recommend that will help me with using the software for fashion design?
    5.  If you don't feel Photoshop Elements is the best choice, then what other software would you recommend?
    Thanks

I've never used PSE for fashion design, but there is only one flavor of elements, not a variety of different versions. I would wonder about using it for this because it could make a lot of difference if you need to create output in CMYK form (for print) or to softproof (neither of which is available in PSE). You also can't create composite layers in Elements.
I like Elements a lot, but I would not say it's 90% of Photoshop, more like 70% and I would expect that people would use Illustrator rather than PS for most things to do with creating illustrations. Also, there is no book that can make PSE into PS, although you can extend what it can do, but Adobe has deliberately crippled certain features in PSE.
I would say we need to know what you need a program to do to be able to give you any useful kind of advice. If you need to be able to draw vectors and paths, PSE is not a good choice. If you just need to sketch, it's fine.
