Lightroom won't upgrade second PSE catalog

I have successfully upgraded my main Photoshop Elements 11 catalog into Lightroom 5.6.
I have a second PSE catalog I'd also like to upgrade, but not import into the main Lightroom catalog (keeping it as a standalone catalog). According to the user manual, there should be a dropdown available from File > Upgrade Photoshop Elements Catalog that will allow me to select this second PSE catalog. However, the dropdown only expands the Catalog info without giving me access to any other catalog. Is there a workaround (or am I doing this wrong)?
For what it's worth, the PSE catalogs are on a separate drive from Lightroom, are in different folder from each other, and the location is not the default location the PSE 11 would have put them. Nevertheless, Lightroom found the first PSE catalog without difficulty.

Per the user's guide, from the Library Module I: File > Upgrade Photoshop Elements Catalog
This brings up a dialog box that shows the most recently upgraded PSE catalog. Then, to quote the user's guide, "To choose a different PSE catalog, click the Elements drop-down menu."
There is no "Elements drop-down menu" within the dialog box to click on. The closest thing is an expand triangle opposite "Catalog info," but when clicked, that only displays more detail about the source PSE catalog I have already upgraded. There doesn't seem to be any way to browse to or select a second PSE catalog — which is what I'm trying to do.

  • Upgraded to PSE, catalog won't convert

Been using PSASE3.2 with no problems. Just downloaded and installed upgrade to PSE, installed no problems. Runs no problem, although catalog is empty - it didn't notice my current catalog iwth 13000 photos in it.
I followed the procedure on the KB and located my current PSASE catalog to convert. Conversion fails, complains that the catalog is corrupted and I should repair with the creating program. Unfortunately, PSASE does not appear to have this functionality. I saw an article on the KB that said I could hold down CTRL when starting PSASE and I would have an option to repair catalog but I don't get that option.
Any suggestions for how to get my PSASE catalog into PSE?

I have been through a similar hell over the past week, and I was finally able to workaround the issue.
Attempting to upgrade from PSA 2.0.1 to PSE6. When attempting to convert the catalog, it would always bail out at 26% and complain that it could not convert.
I tried a variety of approaches suggested by a variety of users, but no luck. Of course, PSA2 would always claim that its catalog was fine, so no help there.
Finally, this approach (very PAINFUL!) worked. In a nutshell, I recursively deleted half of the photos from the catalog until the PSE6 conversion succeeded. Specifics:
First, backup the PSA2.0 catalog (.psa file and associated folder containing cache) and mark it read-only to prevent accidental corruption. Just for extra safety, make another backup copy in a different directory.
Second, open PSA2. Unhide all of your hidden photos to make sure there are no hidden pics lurking about. Now, simply delete half of the photos from the catalog. Make a note of which range of items you deleted. Close PSA2.
Now, open PSE6 and attempt conversion. Conversion may succeed, as I discovered to my delight. If conversion succeeds, it means that one (or more) of the items you deleted was causing the problem. If it fails, the problem item is still in the catalog.
    Close PSE6.
If the conversion in PSE6 FAILED, assume that it will succeed with the other half of your catalog. So go back and attempt to delete the other half of the catalog and see if conversion succeeds.
Do this by restoring your original PSA2 catalog by deleting the current .psa and its folder and copying your backup copies into their place (ctrl + drag). You should still have your read-only backup copy in place!
Open PSA2. You should have your original catalog and photo inventory. Delete the half of the catalog that you did not delete the first time. Close PSA2, open PSE6, and attempt conversion. If it succeeds after having failed the first time, then you know that something in the half which was deleted was what was causing the failure.
Continue this process with smaller and smaller portions of the catalog. With luck, you can zero in on a small number of culprits (hopefully only one).
I spent about an hour doing this last night, went through about 12 iterations, and finally reduced the problem down to one of four possible photos causing the conversion issue. In the final step, I deleted these four photos from the catalog, successfully converted it in PSE6, and then just re-imported those four into PSE6.
When the conversion succeeds, all of my tags and collections came over to PSE6 OK. The PSA2 collections become albums in PSE6. I think I got lucky that only one or two files were preventing conversion; I hope there are no situations where many records are corrupted.
My ultimate goal in going to PSE6 is to use PSE6's ability to write your tags onto the jpg files themselves. Hopefully this will free us in the future from being shackled to PSE's proprietary database system, and allow us to import our tagged jpgs into any future photo-management application, just like we do with MP3 files. The metadata will be embedded in each file, where it belongs!

  • Lightroom imported and  upgraded my elements catalog I  have the metadata and no pictures

I have photoshop elements currently and have decided to upgrade to lightroom 3.4. So I  downloaded the trial version anxious to try it, during the installation I was asked about upgrading my catalog  from elements.... sure I'm going to be using lightroom mostly from now on anyway, so I did this and started lightroom ready to play. What I found was this.... light room found all my photo's but says there is no picture to display. I can click on any "blank tile"(I'm not sure what you call them) on the screen that shows the picture name and I get the metadata for the picture but no picture. figuring the problem must be with myself I then tryed my other computer, a laptop that is not long for this world and soon to be replaced and the program works!!! ??  As I said the laptop is dying and only works when it wants to,but both my machines are running vista32bit, same photo's the only thing is different is I store my photo's on my desktop's external harddrive. So thinking that could be the problem I stored them main hard drive still no luck I also tryed reinstalling the program, reupgrading the catalog.
The little bit of lightroom I have played with; (on the laptop when it works) I 've got to have this program!!! only I can't get it to work.
    help!!!
    Mike

I'm guessing here, but it could be the external HD is referenced differently by Elements and by Lightroom.
In Lightroom, go to the folder panel on the left and see what letter drive Lightroom thinks the photos are located on. Then go to Windows and see if this drive has the same letter. If the letters don't match, then the solution is relatively simple (I think), you need to change the drive letter in Windows to match what Lightroom thinks it should be (although this *could* screw up the Elements Catalog, if you will still be using it). An alternative solution is to tell Lightroom that the photos are on a different drive, by going to the top level folder in Lightroom, right clicking on it, and select Find Missing Folder and point it to the proper location of the photos.

  • I can't stack photos (previously in version sets) imported via "Upgrade PSE Catalog". Why not?

I am currently using LR 3.6 on a Windows 7 OS/ HP laptop.  Previously, I organized my photos using PSE 9 Organizer.  When I switched to LR 3, I selected the option to upgrade my PSE Catalog to bring my photos into LR.  LR imported all the photos and keywords/ratings but not my version sets or smart albums.  I understand LR doesn't have version sets so I was willing to manually restack my photos but now LR is not giving me that option.  Any pictures that were previously in a PSE version set are showing as unstackable (all the stack options are grayed out) even if they are located in the same folder on my hard drive.  I'm having trouble finding anything on the web that addresses this issue.  Any help/direction would be much appreciated as my catalog is rather cumbersome at the moment.
    Thank you,
    Sierra

If dj_paige's suggestions don't help, check to make sure that Lightroom thinks both photos are in the same folder. When I converted from PSE 8, I had some photos in version sets in the same actual folder that LR thought were in different folders whose name differed only by case (e.g. "MyFolder" and "myfolder").  Thus, LR refused to stack the photos upon catalog conversion.
You can check this by selecting each of the suspsect photos in turn, right-clicking, and selecting Go To Folder In Library.

  • Option to Upgrade Photoshop Elements Catalog not available (LR5, PSE 12, Win 8)

Hi there. I have trial versions of both Photoshop Elements 12 and Lightroom 5.2 (trial licenses are both still active (i.e. not expired)). I'm looking to import my PSE12 catalog into Lightroom before I plunk down the money to buy it.
I cannot, however, locate the "File->Upgrade Photoshop Elements Catalog" option in LR5.
I may have originally installed LR 5 before installing PSE 12. So I uninstalled LR5 and reinstalled it. Still no luck - the option isn't there.
Any other ways to force LR5 to look for the PSE 12 catalog? Will LR5 even recognize a PSE12 catalog?
Your help is greatly appreciated - thanks!
    Note: Using Win 8.1

...But we can also wait and see report from other users.
Unfortunately, there is no doubt that the conversion of PSE12 catalogs has been omitted. It's not the first time : I also had to wait for LR4 to be able to convert PSE11 files. We may hope that Adobe will acknowledge the fact, and possibly solve the problem for future versions of PSE.
Of course, it's not a priority for Adobe: the ability to convert PSE catalogs is mainly a sales argument to make the jump from the PSE Organizer to LR easier. Not so many cases, and anyway you can always write metadata to files in PSE and import later in LR. After the jump to LR, you rarely have more PSE catalogs to convert.
However, maintaining misleading update notes by Adobe is not a good point in favour of LR. I do consider that the ability for LR to convert PSE catalog was and still is a very smart demonstration of the ability to deal with database organizational systems. I also consider that once that conversion process is mastered, the update process for each new Elements version is not such a big deal.

  • Moving my photos and PSE catalog to a new machine... and upgrading

    H
I am seeking advice on the best way to do the following:
    - move my photos from my current laptop to a new laptop
    - recreate my current PSE catalog on the new machine
    - do both of the above while also upgrading to PSE 11 on the new machine.
The last time I did this sort of action -- moved my photos to a new machine -- it was sheer bedlum.  Hoping to avoid the pain this time.
Do I first need to move my photos to the new laptop -- recreating the exact smae file structure that I have today -- amd them export and import the PSE catalog? I want to repeserve the album structure and tagging that I have created.....
    Any help/pointers appreciated.

The recommended way to move to another computer with a new OS or PSE version is to use the built-in backup and restore function in PSE.
    - Start with a clean catalog : reconnect missing files, repair, optimize. That's good practice even if it is not strictly necessary.
    - Do a full backup on an external media (external USB drives are safe and affordable). If you have several catalogs, do as many backups. Warning ! each separate backup must be in its own separate folder.
    - Now, you have installed your PSE version (possibly a newer version) on the new computer, you can do a restore from each catalog backup. That will restore the catalog and the picture files ; if you have checked the option to keep the folder tree structure, it will be kept.
The smart thing about this process is that not only everything is restored, but if you have upgraded to a newer PSE version, the catalog will be automatically converted to the newer version ; furthermore, you have a backup!

    http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop-elements/kb/common-catalog-issues-upgrade-elements.html
    Edit:
This shows why a backup from the organizer is often a better solution than external backup solutions. Suppose your old computer crashes, you can restore to a new computer and newer PSE version easily. It's also a good way to update a secondary computer (a laptop for instance) to the same 'sync'  than the master computer.

  • Lightroom 4 has previously upgraded the selected catalog

I have upgraded to LR 4 and in the process, I upgraded my primary catalog.
However, ever time I open the catalog I get a dialog with the message "lightroom 4 has previously upgraded the selected catalog"
Would you like to use the upgraded catalog instead?"
    What is going on?

    Ah, of course.
Thanks for making what should have been obvious clear to me.

  • Trouble upgrading from PSE 3.0 to PSE 8.0

I'm getting an unusable format of my ver 8.0 when upgrading from ver 3.0. My 3.0 PHOTO browser is OK but my 3.0 FILE browser is a mess because I moved many files by "getting" pictures and "deleting from catalog" rather than using the FILE browser in Editor. Does ver 8.0 look at the PHOTO browser or the FILE browser when installing. If this is the problem, is there a way to re-initialize or update the ver 3.0 file browser before I install ver 8.0. I'm using Windows XP SP3. I'll appreciate any help. I'm stuck.

I have used Windows Explorer to managemy directories and files for some time. Last night while trying to get a handle on what was happening I found two troubling things. First, adding or deleting categories and sub-categories in PSE 3 Organizer does not add or delete them in the Editor File Browser. Not having used the File Editor for some time I never discovered this. I'm sure that somewhere, early on in my use of PSE 3, I found information that lead me to believed that the two browsers held the same information.
The second thing has also escaped me for some time because I ignored the File Browser. There was a second copy of the Documents folder and the My Pictures folder in the File Browser. These were relics from a long time ago when I had placed shortcuts to both the Documents folder and the My Pictures folder on my desktop because it made it easier to access them. As I grew more familiar with using the program I realized that a shortcut to Windows Explorer was all I needed. So, I sent both the Documents and Pictures shortcuts to the Recycle bin. That, of course, as I found with Categories and Sub-categories, did not remove the short cuts from the File Browser. I was not aware that the shortcuts were still in the File Browser. All of this simply means that when I tried to upgrade to PSE 8 it was confused. When I removed PSE 8 after the bad install things got more scrambled.
I have removed the second copies of Documents and Pictures and am now starting on the, I'm afraid, long process of getting my files in order. It's clear to me why the two browsers didn't agree. Thanks for your help. I appreciate it.

  • Upgrade Photoshop Elements Catalog option is missing

The File Menu/Upgrade Photoshop Elements Catalog is missing on my version of LR5.  I've followed the suggested procedure to update the preferences files for both Elements 12 and Lightroom 5, but LR5 still does not recognize that I have an existing Elements 12 catalog.  I assume if it did the option would now be available?
This was the instruction I tried:

  • 'Upgrade Photoshop Elements catalog' menu item missing

    Hi,
I have been using PSE for many years and recently upgraded to PSE8 (and PRE8). In addition, I started playing with the LR3 Beta and realized that I wanted to migrate LR from PSE. I just bought LR3 and now want to import my PSE8 catalog into LR3. The Lightroom Help tells me that I should go to File - Upgrade Photoshop Elements Catalog (while in Library module), but this menu item is not showing up in my Lightroom... Is my LR3 not detecting my PSE8 catalog installation? How can I fix this?
Any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated!

Lightroom won't open, says it's open in another application..

Depending on your operating system, use Windows Explorer or Finder to open the folder containing your catalog. In that folder you will find a file with the same name as your catalog, but with the .lock extension. That file needs to be deleted, and then you will be able to start Lightroom.

  • Upgraded LR1 - LR3 Catalog: blank Grid, non functioning app

I've been dealing with support on this, but they're utterly useless, taking days to get back to me and spinning me over troubleshooting 101 stuff.
    Problem:
Upgraded a perfectly working LR1 catalog to LR3.  No issues during upgrade.
Upon trying to use the LR3, the first thousand or so of my photos show up in Grid, but everything after that is blank. By that I mean, a grid cell is drawn, but LR3 doesn't display a thumbnail, or any cell extras or metadata.
Clicking on one of these empty cells gives me a thumbnail frame and some metadata (slowwwwly).
Going to Loupe View on a non-empty cell gives me a "Loading..." spinner and an unrendered thumbnail preview (CPU is not ramping up at all)
Going to Loupe View on an empty cell just gives me a blank screen (CPU is not ramping up at all)
Develop module does load the picture, but slowly.
When I quit, the app freezes up completely, with beachball.  Must force-quit (after giving it 20 minutes in case it was actually trying to do something)
Initially, when I load LR3, my CPU runs high, 75%, like it's working on something.  Then it just cuts out as if it's given up.
Console output when this happens is the following:
    6/17/10 7:27:38 PM Adobe Lightroom 3[518] ServerProcess [AsyncDataServer( Lightroom 3 Catalog.lrcat )] ERRORSERVER<AsyncDataServer( Lightroom 3 Catalog.lrcat )>: A command threw an exception.

    System:
    MacBook Pro Core2Duo 2.1Ghz 3GB RAM, 500GB Drive.
Initially Mac OS 10.5.8, but I tried upgrading to 10.6.3 and 10.6.4 (no luck).
    Library: 21,000 photos
    Other things I've tried:
Trashing all LR3 prefs, caches (running YASU), LR preview caches, plists, extensions, reinstalling, restarting -- no luck
Noticed it was copying the LR1 prefs plist, so I archived that.  LR3 generated a new pref, but no help
Downloaded LR2 Demo, upgraded LR1 Catalog to LR2 Catalog (which works perfectly, no issues), and then LR2 Cat -> LR3 -- no luck
Checking integrity of Catalog in LR1 and LR2 (no problems) and LR3 when upgrading (no problems)
LR3 runs fine on an empty catalog and if I point it at my photo folder and import everything, it's ok (with none of my 3 years of modifications of course).
Is my only option to write out LR1 data to sidecar files and then setup a new Catalog in LR3?

Well, on top of having full access to the photo files, LR obviously has proper permissions to affect the files it generates in the AppSupport>Adobe>Lightroom folder, the Caches>Lightroom folder, the Pictures>Lightroom folder and the Preferences> folder, otherwise it wouldn't be able to build a new catalog, new prefs, new caches and so forth when I generate a new empty catalog.
I really doubt this is a permissions voodoo issue or a monitor profile issue.
LR3 works fine with a brand new catalog (and all the same Photo files).
LR1 and LR2 have absolutely no problem with my catalog and photo files.
LR2 upgrades my LR1 Catalog without issue.
LR3 fails with my upgraded catalog (and all the same photo files)
Unless I'm missing something in my logic tree here, it seems to me this is obviously a problem with LR3 upgrading my Catalog.
Other people's catalogs upgrade fine, and that's dandy, but my catalog doesn't upgrade AND it fails with exactly the same error message every time in the Console (See original post), which seem to be related to some internal db issue, dividing by zero, nil values.
Something ain't being handled right by LR3 that previous versions of LR had no problem with.

I disagee. You've already discovered that Web Galleries remain in the default location when you use "Store Presets with Catalog", and there are other things as well which remain in the default location. So if you want to backup your entire Lightroom environment, including settings, now you have to backup not only the Lightroom Settings folder adjacent to the catalog, but also the Lightroom folder in the appdata area of your user profile. It's far simpler to leave everything in the default location (cos you still have to back it up, right), than mess about with backing up partial sets of settings.
Plus, as Sean says, leaving them in the default location means any new catalog (e.g. for testing) gets access to your presets irrespective of where you locate it.
To be honest, I don't think the "Store Presets with Catalog" was the development team's finest hour, as it's implementation seems muddled and inconsistent. We've had to bail out so many people over at Lightroomforums.net ("help, my presets are missing!") that we ended up documenting the implications of using that setting: http://www.lightroomforums.net/showthread.php?14169-What-is-the-purpose-of-the-quot-Store- Presets-with-Catalog-quot-option
