Lightroom workflow help (from an aperture user)

I'm testing out the demo version of LR3 trying to determine if I want to switch over from Aperture to LR.  To be honest, I've flip flopped between the two a couple of years ago. I haven't taken a look at Lightroom since it went to version 3.
I'm using two cameras, first is an aging D70s and my newest addition is a canon G12. In both cases I shoot in RAW.  At this point in my life would consider myself as a quasi-serious amatuar.  Family demands prevent me from going whole hog into photography but I love shooting my family and vacations.
First question which may open up some debate - converting my RAW images to DNG.  What advantages will I have in doing so?  Secondly should I use adobe's DNG converter, i.e., external app or let Lightroom convert to DNG on import.
Second question - I'll be going on vacation and taking my laptop, yet my desktop is my main computer.  How best handle the fact that I'll be doing some post process work on my MBP and then exporting/transferring those images to my desktop.  Obviously my aim is to retain any metadata (keywords, and other exif data) and any image editing that I apply
As I compare and contrast Aperture vs. Lightroom, getting this information will aide in my decision as to whether LR is a good fit for me needs or if I should stick with aperture.
I my post a couple more aperture vs. lightroom questions in the next day or so
Regards
Mike

I would imagine that metadata for a xmp sidecar or dng work in the same way where only the metadata is updated and not the whole file re-writen. I would like to know if this is true or false from someone here at adobe as it would change my current view on dng. As far as backup and transfering between people here is my take:
I thought this too a while ago in a similar discussion, but I was convincingly shown that on current filesystems this is not generally possible and in most cases the entire file has to be rewritten. That's not a big deal for an occasional file but if you work with lots of dngs, writing 15 MB is very different from writing 10kB or so. This becomes especially egregious in networked settings. I too consider the writing of metadata inside dngs a disadvantage because of this reason. I would realloy like it if Lightroom had the option to use xmp sidecars instead if writing to the file. I don't want anything to write to my originals if I don't specifically ask for it. Together with the incompatibility with camera maker tools (which is an issue once in a while for me), I just don't bother. Lightroom doesn't care, ACR doesn't care. I do use dng when I export a few raw files to share with others using Lightroom so that I have a nice contained package that has all relevant copyright metadata inside. This is rare however.

  • Need help from SQL Developer users

I’d like to run Decision Tree models in SQL Developer for monthly predications after running in ODM manually.
I created PL/SQL Packages under Tools from ODM, and compiled them in SQL Developer successfully. According to Oracle documents, I should be able to run the same DT models (using create or replace PACKAGE BODY "DATAMININGACTIVITY1" .......). However, I am unable to run the entire “Package Body” or any part of it. One of the error messages shows "The select program is in an invalid state for running". I also tried to use "Call" to call functions to run my SQL Package, but that didn't work either. So far, the only SQL works for me is to create a view from a table.
Please share how you use SQL to run models. Thanks, DC

In PL/SQL Block you will see something like below.
In the most simple case you need to supply to arguments ( see bold )
    CASE_TABLE := *'YOUR_TABLE_NAME_FOR_MODEL_BUILD'*;
    MODEL_NAME := *'MODEL_NAME_FOR_YOUR_NEW_MODEL';*
That would be enough to build a model.
    Thanks,

  • Opening pdf Version of User Manual from Within Aperture 3

In Aperture 2, I could open the pdf version of the User Manual from the Help Menu. I've downloaded the pdf version of the Aperture 3 Manual and would prefer to open it (instead of the html version) from within Aperture using Acrobat or Preview. Is there a way to set this up .... perhaps with an Applescript or a Service?
    Cheers,
    Peter O.

    Hi Peter
Try this.... http://documentation.apple.com/en/aperture/usermanual/ (I realise you already have it)
Click on the Aperture3 User manual Link, when it opens in Safari, go to > File > Print (don't worry) > you then get a drop down menu > click the PDF link (next to the help question mark) > then from the new drop down menu click > Save PDF to Aperture
Peter, I haven't tried this myself so am not sure if it's what you want, let me know if it is what you require, I would be interested to know...
    Regards.... Gerry..
Peter I tried it, it only downloaded the first page and let me save it in Aperture as a Project... Not what you needed i'm afraid... back to the drawing board

  • Could not open Help File 'Aperture User Manual.PDF'

I downloaded the trial version, while waiting for my boxed version of Aperture to arrive. Once it came in, I entered the serial number and continued using the original application. However, when I try to access the user manual via Help, I get an Alert saying, "Could not open Help File 'Aperture User Manual.PDF'". I manually copied the PDF file from the CD to the documents folder, and then from there to the Applications folder - nothing makes a difference. I even reinstalled - same results. I have tried some of the other items in Help -- if it is for a manual, I get the same Alert.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Russ

The files are all there. When I checked their properties, I noticed that the PDF files didn't point to adobe acrobat reader!
Before uninstalling Aperture and then reinstalling it, I tried to reinstall the latest version of Acrobat Reader. Suddenly, I could access the Aperture documents!
I am using a new iMac -- apparently, when I transfered all of my files from my old G5 iMac, Acrobat hadn't properly transfered. Reinstalling Adoe solved the problem!
    Thanks for the help!

  • Exporting From LR For Aperture User

I second shoot weddings frequently for an Apple/Aperture user friend of mine...I'm PC and LR all the way (using LR5).
I typically just dump my RAW files on a DVD or flash drive and let him edit mine in his workflow.  I'd like to provide him with edited files though to save him a little time on his end.
Is it feasible to export my DNG files out of LR w/ my edits intact, in a format comptible with Aperture?  If all else fails, I can just give him the DNGs with a separetd folder of edited JPEGs...But wanted to check first to see if anyone has had success with this export/import process in the past.

I can probably answer myself.... I overlooked the new "complete toning in Camera Raw" button!!!!!

You cannot. You have to make your own download by signing into the App Store using your Apple ID then downloading the file.
If you just want to install it on your computer, then copy the file to a flash drive and transfer it to your computer.

how do you open a Numbers file sent from another Mac user with same operating system, i get a pop up that says I'm missing an index.hml file??? HELP PLEASE

The operating system may be the same but the Numbers applications are likely different.  You need to get the apps in sync.  Unfortunately, the Numbers (and Pages as well) saga is pretty confusing (and frustrating).  Here's some info from the iWork resident version expert (PeterBreis0807):
Pages '09/'08 can not open Pages 5 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5.2 can open Pages '09 files but may damage/alter them. It can not open Pages '08 files at all.
Older versions of Pages 5 can not open files from later versions of Pages 5.
Once opened and saved in Pages 5 the Pages '09 files can not be opened in Pages '09.
Anything that is saved to iCloud and opened in a newer version of Pages is also converted to Pages 5 files.
All Pages files no matter what version and incompatibility have the same extension .pages.
Pages 5 files are now only compatible with themselves on a very restricted set of hardware, software and Operating Systems and will not transfer correctly on any other server software than iCloud.
Apple has removed almost 100 features from Pages 5 and added many bugs.

  • Help with adding a user copying permissions from another user $RoleDefinition.Name SharePoint 2010 Powershell

    Hello,
I need to basically find everyplace 'ADUser1' exists and then add a new 'ADUser2' with the same permissions as the first group.
I have created a script that runs through an entire web app and finds everyplace the AD account is directly given access to and access via a group.  I then need to add the new user and assign the permissions from the first ADUser, copy them. Below
is not the entire script, just where I'm trying to add the new user.  The rest of the script works fine to find the first user.  I'm stuck with this part:  $role = $_.RoleDefinitions[$newRoleDef].  I get an error that I can call a method
on a null valued experssion.. I guess I don't know how to specify to copy the role from the first user, and use it to set the new user?
#Get the Permissions assigned to user
               $WebUserPermissions=@()
                 foreach ($RoleDefinition  in $WebRoleAssignment.RoleDefinitionBindings)
                                 $WebUserPermissions += $RoleDefinition.Name +";"
            $newRoleDef = $RoleDefinition.Name
              #write-host "with these permissions: " $WebUserPermissions

              "$($Web.Url) `t Site `t $($Web.Title)`t Direct Permission `t $($WebUserPermissions)" | Out-File C:\Apps\Scripts\Logs\UserAccessReport.csv -Append
        $assignment = New-Object Microsoft.SharePoint.SPRoleAssignment($account)
                    $role = $_.RoleDefinitions[$newRoleDef]
                    $assignment.RoleDefinitionBindings.Add($role)
                    $_.RoleAssignments.Add($assignment)

    Hi,
According to your post, my understanding is that you want to copy user permission to another user via PowerShell.
Instead of copy permission to another user, we can get the user permission, assign the permission to a group, then add the other user to the group. Now the user would get the same permssion as this user.

We can also use the third-party tool to achieve the same scenario.

  • Why are my photos not as sharp when I import them into Facebook from the Aperture Projects file, compared to when I 'share' them with Facebook within the Aperture programme? There is a noticeable difference and has been spoiling my photos for some time.

Hi all, I take wildlife photos (mostly birds) as a hobby, and have become frustrated with the quality of my photos recently when shared online, particularly Facebook.
I started blaming my camera ( a Canon 7D) as I changed it a few months ago from a Canon 550D, and I soon noticed that the images were not as good. Then I realised it was when I started using Aperture.
I started by using the 'share' option within Aperture but I soon realised that then I have no control over the creation of an album, and the photos start appearing on facebook before I have finished uploading them and given them captions. Plus if I subsequently move them or export them to my back up drive then they disappear from Facebook!
So I started creating albums within Facebook and then importing the photos from the aperture projects file on my computer. Because they are imported I can then delete or move the aperture file and the photos stay on facebook. Otherwise my macbook was becoming completely full.
However to test my theory I have today uploaded the same photo edited in Aperture stored in the same projects folder using the two different methods described above, and there is a very distinct difference between the quality of the two images. The shared ones are very much sharper than the imported ones.
I am a computer novice and don't know how to check what the quality settings are, or how to adjust anything to improve the way the photos go into facebook. I do have a manual but I just cant understand it :-(
I have tried a free sample of Lightroom 5 and my photos  look amazing, there is such a difference, but I don't want to give up with Aperture unless the problem really can't be solved.
Sorry for such a long first post, I would be very very grateful for any help you can give me!
    Regards
    Susan

Generally I would not use Facebook for sharing any photos, it compresses the photos substantially, and when you have shadows and dark colours you get visible "bands" where there should be subtle gradients, ie at sunsets and sunrises.
It sounds like you are using two methods to upload to Facebook:
    1. Sharing from within Aperture, which basically syncs Facebook with your Aperture album, so any changes made at either end gets synced, hence the deletions from Albums, although the original file should still be in your library, just removed rom the album. It is like a playlist in iTunes.
    2. Exporting pics and uploading to Facebook from the browser.
I am not sure how method 1 gets compressed, but I know that uploading hi-res jpegs to Facebook using method 2 results in poor quality images.
I wouldn't even bother comparing option 1 or 2, and they will both be poor images once you view them on Facebook, as opposed to viewing uploaded images on proper image sharing / hosting sites.
Your problem is not with Aperture, it is using Facebook for showing your work.
If you export pics form Aperture at high res jpegs or TIFFs your images will be fine.
If you insist to use Facebook as your way to share your work, then your workflow should be this:
    1. Right click images you want to share.
    2. Select Export version.
    3. Export as 100% size and ensure the export settings are set at 100% quality.
    4. Upload this pic into Facebook.
This will get you the best image size and resolution on Facebook.
    See how you go.

  • Help in managing Aperture library

    Thanks for your time.
I think I am getting too many photos on my Mac. I'd like to be able to effectively manage the images there but I am having a hard time figuring out where to get help.
Is there a way to see what images are using the most space? There are some I have worked in external editors and I notice they are coming back into Aperture as much larger files, i.e., 1.5 MB before and 27.5 MB after.
And is there a good FAQ someplace about general dusting and cleaning and deleting of unneeded files?
    Thanks!

Modern digicam workflows require increasing amounts of mass storage. Sorting/deleting IMO only provide limited benefit. Bottom line is image handlers need lots of scalable mass storage.
Single-drive computers are limiting to the volume handling of modern digicam image files. Those of us with single-internal-drive computers like laptops or iMacs IMO should use a Referenced-Masters Library. If you are not using Referenced Masters now is the time to set up with Referenced Masters rather than Managed.
External drives that are not eSATA decrease speed, so your Library should stay on the internal drive. Use external drives to relocate data from your internal drive so that there is room for a (Referenced-Masters) Library there.
When using Referenced Masters the Library does not actually hold the large Master images themselves. That way even a laptop drive can hold an Aperture Library of 100,000 images by referencing Master images that live on external drives.
To store Master images by "Reference," when you go to Import on the right hand side of the import window you must select "Store files in their current location." Obviously at some point referenced Masters must be on external drives to keep from overfilling any single internal drive.
In general IMO graphics users do not give enough attention to hard drives setup that really is very important for graphics performance optimization. A few comments:
    • Aperture users' mass storage needs tend to increase very quickly.
    • The location, size/speed/fullness and connection method of hard drives can have a huge impact on performance within any given specific setup. Internal better than external; with external eSATA better than FW800 which is better than FW400, and USB2 unacceptable except for backup-only.
    • Hard drives slow as they fill. A good rule of thumb is not to fill any drive more than 70%, and for best speed keep important drives no more than 50% full. Drives will operate more full but at a performance cost.
    • Without careful management a single internal laptop hard drive will become overfilled.
    • Your laptop allows up to 500 GB internal drive size. Since drives slow as they fill, an option is to replace the internal HD with a 500 GB drive and keep it less than half full to optimize operation.
Some of the reasons that I prefer Referenced Masters to Managed Masters are
    • The much smaller Library is easy to keep on a faster underfilled drive.
    • Vaults are much smaller; hence easier and more likely that multiple Vaults will be created.
    • An infinite number of Masters and originals can be stored on as many drives as necessary and backed up ad nauseam using the Finder, backup software, Time Machine, whatever. Using Referenced Masters, Aperture (and any anomalies that a complex app like Aperture might introduce) are not in the Masters backup loop.
