Lights out white border.

Hello I use the lights out function a lot when cropping images and I find the white border applied when in total black a huge help. I noticed it wasn’t there in this version and wanted to know if it was a preference setting or it was just removed. I have changed the lights out color to white which is nice but I would love to have that thin white border back for black backgrounds.

I have the exact same issue and mentioned it another thread here: http://forums.adobe.com/message/4129130#4129130
For me it is a huge loss. It helps for a number of reasons. Firstly, I like to snap in and out of Lights Out mode during editing to visualise the finished image without distraction. I also like to crop in lights out mode. While attempting to crop it is now much harder to locate the edge of the image under some circumstances. Additionally, it is very hard to discern where the image ends and the background lights out effect begins in images that have dark edges. It's 100% clear to me that this should be an option rather than a feature that is stripped out entirely.
As far as bugs go, I use lights out mode at least once per image during an edit. Often many times. Having used LR since release 1 I have never experienced an artifact left over by the lights out border. I'd very much like it back!

  • Lights out - need black border for softproofing

The Lightroom 4 Beta has a white (and not black) background for previewing photos. In another discussion (Lights Out White Border) it was stated that this was intentional, not a bug. Many people requested the Black border be brought back, and the thread is "Assumed Answered". We are given the impression that White is what it will be!
In softproofing it is critical that we have a black screen in order to view the effects of Simulate Paper & Ink (Reference: Real World Color Management 2nd edition by Bruce Fraser)
Please bring back the Black Border! We NEED it!

I think if Bruce we alive, he would actually change his mind about that...the reason he suggested a black screen was so you weren't influenced by the change from soft proofing off to soft proofing on in Photoshop. He suggested going to a black screen and hitting tab to hide Photoshop UI elements.
What the current soft proofing in Lightroom is doing is showing Paper White as the area surrounding the image area just as you would see in a final print. The LR UI is already dimmed down to not influence your view of the image. As a result, in Lightroom you really don't need (or want) a black screen.
Your eyes will use the paper white to adapt to the paper as the brightest area in your field of vision. This will allow you to better judge the relative brightness of your image. Give it a try...the soft proofing in Lightroom is, I think superior to soft proofing in Photoshop. New tools need new ways of using them.
BTW, Bruce was a good friend and partner in PixelGenius. I've also coauthored two books with him and have a real good idea of the way Bruce thought–and learned a lot from him and still do.

  • Change the thin white border in lights-out mode?

It'd be nice if you could get rid of this border, or change it to grey or something... I couldn't find any way to adjust this, nor (surprisingly) much mention of it in this forum. Anyway, I find the bright white quite distracting.

I've just started using Lightroom, and whilst in general I really love it, I wasted about an hour looking for the preference to get rid of this garish thick white line in lights out mode.
In principle, lights-out mode is a brilliant way to review a photo without the noise of the interface.
However, I didn't take a photo of an incandescent rectangle, so why is this what I see in lights out mode - especially with darker shots?
I'd be just as miffed if you lined the edge of my picture with little yellow plastic ducks.
It is actually more offputting than the user interface. In the normal view, pictures are shown with a subtle shadow on a neutral grey. Why not use this by default?
If we are not to be able to choose how the edge is treated in lights out mode, then surely it's best to do nothing. I.e. just show the picture, but it would be better still if you could both choose the background picture and even how the edge is distinguished. E.g. 'don't show edge', 'show edge with shadow', 'show edge with line whose colour is ->(pick)' etc.
The other thing which would be good is if, in 'lights out mode', the image actually covered the available screen, or at least there was an option to zoom it to make the best use of the pixels available.
I signed up to this forum just to put this message up. If anyone else out there is irritated by this line, please add a message. Surely this matters to other people too?
please please please please please! (Is this helping?)

  • White border in lights-out mode

I am trying the trial version of LR5.
How do I get rid of the white border in lights-out mode?  I cannot locate any settings to do so.
I did not have this problem in LR4 - I even went back and checked.  And I am pretty sure I did not have this in LR3, but I no longer have it on my system to confirm.
I do not see any settings in LR4 that would create/turn off this border, nor in LR5, so I am stumped as to why I am seeing it now.
Am I missing a setting somewhere?

  • In pages/Pixelmator how do you put a white border around a piece of font, to make it stand out more. Please Help

The Benchwarmers logo, I would like to have a white border around the font to make it stand out. Help please

You would be better served to take a closer look at BeLight's free Art Text 2 Lite, or on YouTube, search for "Pixelmator text effects," or review the several Pixelmator tutorials on their site. Pages does not support the layered text effects necessary to create the Benchwarmers logo, but certainly can incorporate this image once completed through external means.  Is the following image the one you have in mind:

  • White border on cut out

I meticulously cut up a person by using the eraser tool but when I move her to a neutral gray background there is a white border around the cut out so it obviously looks pasted. Any suggestions?

    John:
There are many ways to go about fixing her. The first would be to stop using the eraser tool in the future. Particularly for this application. Instead, learn to use a layer mask. You can then live preview your cutout on any background, including the one you intend to use. A typical approach is to test white, black and gray to quickly spot any artifacts.
To fix her, you can select the transparency of your lady by holding ctr and clicking on her layer icon in the layers palette (or load selection... woman layer transparency). You should now see the marching ants around her. Make sure your woman is the active layer, and then create a layer mask by hitting the mask icon at the bottom of the layers palette (the white circle in the gray box). Your selection should have disappeared and been replaced by a mask (black and white icon linked to your woman in the layers palette). Now, go to filter... other... minimize, and play with the value (probably 1 or 2) to see if this works.

  • White border/line on a cut out image (after apply a plug-in)

    Here's the thing happens :
    1- BEFORE (a clean cutted image) :  http://img4.ressim.net/out.php/i5801318_1-jpg
2- Using a plugin (also with others): http://img4.ressim.net/out.php/i5801319_2-jpg
    3- AFTER (white border) : http://img4.ressim.net/out.php/i5801320_3-jpg
    This is so interesting.
I use ''knockout2, remask3'' for cutting and ''Imagenomic Portraite'' for retouching.
That never happened in CS4 32-bit.
Now i use CS6 64-bit and whenever i APPLY an effect/filter (include PS's Refine Edge) or plugin, there happens a strong white border/line on the image.
I can delete it by using so many ways like ''contract'' but it kills the details.
Can somebody tell me why is that happening?
This must be an option or something cuz it never happened in any other photoshops that i used.
    I used the same plugins.

It happens with even plug-ins or proper PS functions (like REFINE EDGE option).
    Photoshop adds the (white) edge.
Because in that plug-ins or PS funtions there is no ''white edge/border'' in preview.
This happens after i apply those.
I checked out all the preference or anti-aliasing things, i tried to re-install the plugins or photoshop. I couldnt find any solution.
    Please help.

  • Removing White Border

Hey, I'm new to Elements 10 and am experiencing my first real problem.  I have a fun printer that allows me to print photos onto photo paper and I was experimenting with a couple photos.  My problem: They are printing with an annoying white border and I cannot figure out how to get rid of it.  If anyone could please shed some light onto this matter, I would greatly appreciate it.  Thanks.

To add to Mark's post, not all printers will print borderless, so check the documentation. If your printer is ok for borderless, follow these steps:
Go to File>print in Editor. I never print from the Organizer.
In the dialog that comes up, go to #2 Printer Settings
Click on change settings, then advanced settings
    Tick the box for Borderless
Under #3 for Paper type, be sure to select the borderless option for your size paper stock
Crop the picture to the dimensions of the paper stock before you send it to the printer.
This same issue came up yesterday and was resolved by implementing these measures.

  • Lights Out - Pinstripe

    Hi all,
Ever since the beginning, LR has presented a pinstripe around the image when entering lights out mode. This appears to be gone in LR4b and instead we go simply to the blacked out screen. This is a step backwards in my opinion because in instances where the edge of the frame is quite dark it becomes hard/impossible to see where the frame ends and the background lights out area begins. I would like to see the pinstripe return in later betas or at least be offered as an option.
    Many thanks
    Tony

Ah, yes.  I wondered what you meant when you said pinstripe, but I've just been back and checked and there was a white border round the image before.

  • White border problem when zooming with SWF in PDF

    Hi Everyone,
I have posted my original querry in the Indesign forum:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/5176893#5176893
I'm having problems with zooming whedn trying to create a PDF with SWF inserted.. at certain levels of zoom I get a white border on the left and right of the document which squashes the content into the middle and makes it a little pixelated.  I also get a thin white border on the right when zooming out.  Does anyone have any ideas where I might be going wrong?
    Thanks,
    Em

Not wishing to be rude, but that workflow is not supposed to be used that way.
InDesign's ability to export SWFs is intended for showing the file in a Web page, and Acrobat's ability to embed SWFs is only intended for small annotations placed within the pages of a conventional PDF file. By placing the entire Layout as a SWF you are in effect playing the entire thing as a movie in Flash Player - all the advantages of the PDF format are completely lost, there is no vector-rendering of any content or text, and users will find it very hard to understand what's going on (the navigation buttons in Acrobat or Reader will not work, text is not searchable or accessible, multiple pages cannot be printed, etc.).
It's not entirely trivial to do this 'correctly', as at the moment we don't have full support in the PDF standard for all the interactive features that InDesign can apply to page objects - that's why they are grouped into PDF and non-PDF in the various selection menus in InDesign. Rather than saving as a SWF you should be using Export to Interactive PDF, and ensuring that the various interactive items and media are all selected on the export dialog.
Basic stuff such as links and video will export just fine that way, and the PDF will preserve everything else in the Layout as native text or graphics so it'll look fine, navigate properly and be searchable. Animations and buttons will not work as expected, so you may have to revise their behavior if PDF is your intended output destination.

  • White border in pdf preview of bleed doc

    Hi,
As the attached image shows I get a thin white border on my pdf preview of a document that has a 3mm bleed. I have tried to increase the bleed to 5mm but with same result. I've also tried to exceed the black background outside the bleed marks in InDesign - no result. The pdf is exported with document is generated I'm stuck. Why do I get this annoying thin white border when previewing the pdf document? The people I'm sending this to thinks its something wrong and even if this should turn out to be in preview mode only its ruining my work as everyone else is asking about it when looking at the pdf. Use Document Bleed settings is ticked.

You mentioned trying to increase the bleed areas by dragging the black box larger, but are you actually specifying the larger bleed when exporting the PDF
Also, you mention Bleed Marks rather than Crop Marks.
Crop marks show where the page will be trimmed and this is what the printer needs to see.
Bleed marks are essentially useless. they only show the edge of the bleed, but give NO indication where the printer should trim to
Your black screenshots are hard to decipher, but the Magenta box in your 2nd screenshot only shows the margins on the inside of the page.
Unless you have set the margins to 0, the magenta margin box will always be smaller that the page (the final trim size which is what the Crop marks are for)
Have you accidently set a Slug area larger than the bleed? This is only way I can get the white space to show.
The example below used greatly exaggerated settings to better show some issues.I greatly increased the bleed area to swallow the Crop marks and then included the Slug area to show the white.(slugs are not always used or even needed)
The Magenta box are the margins inside the page.
The Red box is the bleed area.
The Crop marks in between these two are what the printer need to cut on to produce the final page size.
Click on the image below to see a larger version with more detail.
P,S, you mentioned about not being able to print the bleeds. If you have bleeds and crops that will make the final PDF size larger than your desktop printer can print, just select FIT or REDUCE OVERSIZE PAGE in the print dialog and it will print on your printer. Of course it will not be to 100 scale, but it will show all the elements in the PDF.

  • Can't get rid of white border around image

    http://www.gunnar.ca/laminatepage2.htm
I created a rounded corner in photoshop for my table. I
created a cell in the bottom left corner of the table and placed
the gif. There is a thin whit border around the outer edge of the
gif, so it doesn't look genuinely rounded. Can anyone tell me how
to get rid of that so it looks like the table is actually rounded?
    Thank you!

Because the table containing the GIF has a border. In your
    styleA.css
    stylesheet, the rule:
    .border {
    border: 1px solid #E5E5E5;
adds a border to the table. Delete the rule. Of course - that
    may affect
other things that use the .border class. Or - delete the
    class from the
    table tag.
    Several problems with the page:
    styles.css cannot be found
    sideNavStyles.css cannot be found

  • White Border created in PDF docs from InDesign CS5 -how to get rid of it

On some files I get a white border when exporting the PDF from InDesign. I have gone through I feel like every setting (including bleed) but cannot figure out what is causing it.
Here is a screen shot of what is going on.

  • Suddenly all my thumbnails got a white border. How do I change that?

I have always used thumbnails of the different eBook covers I design, to see how they work in a small size. All the alias' of all the eBook I've designed is on my desktop, so I can compare them. Suddenly the new pictures I store either get no thumbnail at all(alias') or they get this annoying white border around them(originals), all the old one's are still perfect without border. Now I can't compare the new one's with the others, because the white border makes the picture in the thumbnail smaller. And yes I have clicked "Show icon preview" in view options and it doesn't matter where I save them(folders or desktop) or where they came from(Photoshop, preview, iPhoto or directly from my camera) it happens to all picture thumbnails. This new white border is on jpeg, png, tiff and pdf. Actually the white border is a bit smaller on the pdf thumbnail, but the same on the rest.
Hope someone have found a way out of this?

  • White Border Around Template Images

I recently created a "page layout" document from a template. This is my first attempt to use a template and it was all going well. Until I hit "print." When I print the document, the images that were already part of the template are printing with a white border around them. It looks fine in Pages and when I go to Print Preview, but it comes off the printer looking funny. What's the deal?

Thanks for the clarification. I had a hard time selecting that white border around the photos. I couldn't even figure out what it was for awhile. I think the printing problem is related to that white border which is an image, photoBG_triple.png, that is behind the photos & their masks & on top of the lined paper image, notepaper.png. I think all that layering looks nice on screen or PDF, but could be a printing nightmare. How does it look funny? And what kind of printer are you using?
