Lightsabre noises on G4 iBook

When I move a iBook G4 around I get very faint buzzing noises like the lightsabres in star wars (system volume independant). (and no macsabre isn't running).
Is that normal for the SMS?
I have a 120gb HD 5400rpm in it.

Here are a couple of suggestions:
1. Make sure you have a reliable backup of your HDD, or at least of your Users Folder.
2. Go to Apple Menu > About this Mac > More Info > Hardware > ATA. In the second section of the right pane look for S.M.A.R.T Status. It should say Verified. If it says Failing you will need to replace your HDD.
Good luck.

  • Ominous noise emanating from iBook.

I think my iBook may be dying. Intermittently, there is an unusual grinding noise coming from inside. It is mechanical, not from the speakers. I don't think it is the fan. It happens even when it is cold. Whenever the grinding noise occurs, the beach ball appears, and I can't do anything. When the grinding noise stops, the machine resumes normal operation.
Sometimes I can make the noise stop by lifting the iBook up, or tilting it slightly. But that doesn't always work, and when it does, it is not for long.
My theory is that the hard drive head stepper is having trouble. I doubt that the head itself is crashing, because so far (touch wood) I have not had any read/write errors.
Now I usually upgrade to new hardware every two years. It is time for a new iBook for me anyway.
However, is there a good chance Apple will come out with a new model, at MacWorld on January 9th? Perhaps I should wait a couple of weeks, and see what happens on that date.
Meanwhile, is there anything I can do to about my poor iBook? Will the Disk Utility help in any way, or is that only for data errors?

    Frances144,
I must say that I think you have been given misinformation. If you don't mind I would like to explain the "logic board problems" and how the term is over used. The logic board problem was with the G3, it was fixed with the new design of the newer iBooks. I have found that most "logic board" problems are not exactly a logic board problem. For an example, a computer is starting up with a grey screen with the spinning symbol and not being able to get any farther in the startup process has before been labeled a "logic board problem". I can think of about maybe 10 different reasons why this is happening. Usually it is a software problem, corrupt startup software. This can be fixed by reinstalling the system software. Another common problem that is fixed by replacing the logic board is a broken DC board. They can't power their iBook, so a reseller might just replace the logic board. Reason being, it would probably be cheaper just to put a whole new logic board in rather then the DC board. You would have to take the whole computer apart and disconnect the DC board to replace it. Also by just changing the DC board there is more of a risk of problems afterwords. Anyways, his problem is the hard drive, not the logic board. If you look closely at the logic board program, it has to do with video and the video card. Please don't be confused with faulty assumptions on the Discussion Boards about the "logic board problem".

  • IBook G4 Right Speaker Noise

I recently started hearing a noise on my iBook G4(sporadically) coming from the right speaker. It soundslike a crumpling noise like crumpling paper sort of. I am not listening to any music and the noise happens whether the speakers are on or muted because when I heard the noise and the speakers where on I muted it and the noise continued. This usually happens after it has been running a while but I have also noticed it at startup after the computer has been turned off all night. Resetting the PMU seems to make it stop for a while but only for a day or so. Has anyone else had this problem or heard about it and if so what was the fix.
Additonally I only noticed this after upgrading to 10.4.6 but when I did a reformat to 10.4.4 it continued.
    Thanks

  • Odd Noise on Power On

Whenever I power on my iBook (or wake it from sleep), I hear a loud grinding-like noise for about one second. The noise sounds like a fan, although I've run the Apple Hardware Test and the fan sounds fine while running. Is this just a normal noise it makes when powering on? I've had two other iBooks (dead pixels, exchanged), but I don't remember if they made this noise or not.
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

I believe that it is normal...its the sound of the hard drive, fans, and other components turning on at the same time. If it only makes the noise at start up...don't worry. It you start to hear the LOUD clicks during normal use...you may have an issue. (Some clicking sounds are normal as the hard drive parks and unparks)

  • Dvd drive won't allow me to insert disks

    Hi,
My superdrive on my late 2005 iBook, has become jammed, there isn't a disc in the drive to my knowledge, as I haven't burned or watched anything for weeks.
I noticed the drive was making strange noises when my iBook was starting up for the last couple of days but thought nothing of it as it usually made the same noise when tilting the iBook moving about with it.
I tried to insert a disc today, but it feels like something is blocking the disc from being inserted.
I haven't dropped or applied force to my iBook that could caused damage to the superdrive.
I have tried reseting the PRAM and booting into single user mode to try and troubleshoot.
Any suggestions much thanks in advance,

  • My harddrive is messed up

Every minute or two my harddrive starts making a grinding noise and the ibook freezes up. When the grinding noise stops the ibook unfreezes. Oh what am I to do?

    Hi
Well, does your iBook have a motion sensor, because that will instantly lock the harddrive to prevent damage. It's suppose to do that. Is your iBook the late 2004-model like mine? My harddrive just died yesterday after it had been buzzing for a few weeks. And I am most likely going to lose everything on the HD because I'm stupid enough not to backup my stuff. So to be sure, maybe just make sure you backup your data. And it's never a good idea to tip your computer when it's turned on. And I don't think you should be pushing down on it like that unless you mean that it happens when you are resting your hand on it.

  • Ibook g4 won't go past gray screen, hard drive making whirirng noises

I think I'm in pretty serious trouble here...
I left my 2-yr old ibook g4 running last night downloading a couple of torrents, and woke up in the middle of the night because it was making a loud whirring noise. I tried to close everything, but found that it was frozen. So I just powered it off. I've never had it freeze on me, or otherwise had any problems with it before.
When I turned it on this morning, it would make the initial startup chime, but would not go past the grey screen with the apple. I tried several times, with a couple of slightly different results. The first time I got the apple with the circle underneath. The second time, I got no apple, but the circle with a line through it. And the final time, its just been the apple. And all the while, the hard drive is making a really ill sounding whirr.
I read another post about trying to boot from the install CD, so I inserted the CD & pressed c, but nothing happens, and now the CD won't eject.
Is it possible that it overheated? I got an e-mail about the battery recall, but according to my serial number, mine wasn't one that was being recalled.
    Please help!
    iBook G4 Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Haven't had any replies yet, but I do have some progress to report...
I was able to eject the Panther Install CD1 after all (pressed the eject button immediately after I powered on). Have tried booting from it a couple of times, to no avail. I was, however, able to boot it from my friend's Tiger Install DVD. I went into Disk Utility, as I have read elsewhere and tried to repair my hard disk using that, but got the following error:
"Repair disk failed. Could not unmount disk"
Probably a stupid question, but is it because its not the correct operating system?
I still don't know why it won't boot from my Panther CD.
I have tried to boot in Safe Mode, but all I get is a little folder icon that alternately flashes the finder icon & a question mark.
I purchased my ibook online when I was still living in Canada, but its no longer under warranty and I didn't purchase the protection plan. I am currently living in rural Japan, with absolutely no Apple Stores anywhere remotely close to where I am.
I've also seen elsewhere that I could probably just get a new hard drive, which is fine as I could use the extra space anyway, but does this mean I lose everything that's on my current hard drive??
If anyone has any suggestions, it'd much appreciated!

  • Ibook keeps making weird noises on the left side near the fan vent

Recently my ibook has been making motor noises as it heats up. Sometimes I can make it go away by lifting the front or back up a lottle bit. Last time I got the noise it wouold not stop at all! I tried shutting down and letting it cool way off.....after 2 hours I started again and the noise was there immediately and would not stop. Please help!!

    Hi 744mom,
    Welcome to the Discussions.
There are 2 things in that area with motors; the fan and the hard drive. With the noise present at a cold start I would think the hard drive might be going bad.
Launch Disk Utility (in Applications>Utilities) and highlight the drive on the left (upper most in the list). At the bottom of the window you'll see SMART status. Does it say Verified or Failing?

  • IBook G4 (Jun 2005 model) Logic Board Problem (No Display and HDD noise)

    Hello All
I have been using my iBook G4 (1.2 GHz) with no problems since I purchased it in June 05. But over the past 2 days, I have been noticing this weird incident of "no display" when booted and I was hearing a loud fan noise at times and I can hear my HDD spinning etc. When I tried to restart pressing CTRL+OPTION and POWER after shutting it down, it booted up but reverted my PMU to a date in 2001 (resetting all my email, music etc). But when I tried shutting it down again and restarted normally, I heard the bootup chime but no display. Again, I could hear the fan and the HDD spinning.
I took my laptop to the Apple Store here in Boca, FL today and was told that its a logic board problem.
I know there was a Logic Board Repair Initiative from Apple for the G3's and early G4's. Does anyone know such a thing for the fairly recent iBook G4's??.
    Any help is immensely appreciated.
    Thanks

How do I verify that my issue is a logic board issue. Recently, computer froze. Tried a hard reboot but no luck. It either shows a blank blue screen or I'll get the grey screen and apple with the start-up spinner but it'll stop spinning.
That's it. I'm able to browse the contents of the iBook's harddrive when I connect it to my Ti Powerbook via Target Disk mode. I even lauched Disk Utility from the powerbook and verified the iBook's drive and it found no problems.
Could it be the same logic board issues that you guys are having? How do I verify this? Is it worth paying to repair an 800mhz G4 iBook (applecare expired April '06)?
I've heard about kernal panic issues with the macbooks so I'm apprehensive about getting one of those right now too. Getting frustrated. Actually considered copping an inexpensive PC laptop... ugghhh.

When my iBook got hot like that, I would take a break and let it cool down.

  • IBook making horrible noises and now my hard drive is missing?!

This morning my iBook started making this horrible noise and then none of my programs would respond. I was able to temporarily fix it using disk utility. It then started again a few hours ago. I tried doing what I did before, but this time it didnt work. I have also been getting a flashing ? at start up. I tried all the steps listed here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58042
    and none of them worked.
When I booted from the Mac OSX disk, my Hard Drive wasnt mounted so I went through al the steps for resetting the PRAM and that didnt work either. I finally went to do Archive Install and now I have no Hard Drive!?
    Please help me!!

Hi, Rachel. Welcome to Apple Discussions.
I would recommend investing in DiskWarrior to repair your hard drive. It can often find the drive when Apple's own Disk Utility cannot.
My advice would be to buy DiskWarrior, use it to repair your hard drive, and then do the Archive and Install.
    Good luck.

  • IBook noise after AirPort install

Since installing an AirPort card, when my iBook is in sleep mode, every 15 seconds or so it makes the noise it makes when it's waking up from sleep. This happens even when AirPort is off. Has anyone ever head of this?
    iBook G3   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
No, I've never heard of this. You may want to:
    a. Make sure that your keyboard is seated properly,
and, if that doesn't take care of the problem,
    b. Try reseating the AirPort Card.
Let us know how things go.

  • IBook suddenly started making noise

    Hello!
My iBook G3 suddenly started making noise. When you dont do anything on it, its quiet, but when you open apps, write stuff to disk, its loud. How can I avoid this?
    Matt

It sounds like you may be having some hard drive issues.
Try booting into Safe Mode. This will take quite awhile longer than a normal startup because it does a file check and repair of the hard disk.
You will see your normal desktop. Once completely started up in Safe Mode, restart normally, and go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility. Click on the top hard drive icon in the left sidebar and note the S.M.A.R.T. status at the bottom right of the pane. What does it say? If it says "Verified," you should be in good shape, as far as the hard drive is concerned, at least.
Select the named boot volume in the left sidebar, ("Macintosh HD" unless you've renamed it). What is the hard drive capacity and how much space remains available on it? Repair permissions on it.
See if a little hard drive maintenance helps things out.

  • IBook making weird noise - think it's the fan

Hi, I've had this iBook for just over two years now, and lately it's been making a weird noise. Every so often something inside - I think it's the fan - will start making this sort of high whining whirring sound, then quiet down after a few minutes. It's not particularly tied to anything I'm doing, and will sometimes happen when I'm not doing anything. Also, I am using the computer on a normal desk, not in any situation which could lead to overheating, and the computer doesn't feel any hotter than usual.
I think the problem is getting more frequent over the past few months. I originally had 10.2 and I installed 10.4 when it came out, but I think the noise had already happened once before then, so I can't directly blame that. The computer has been running a little slower since I installed, though, and the trackpad has stopped working a few times lately.
Anyone have any suggestions what could be causing this, and is it just a nuisance or is it the first sign of the computer breaking down? If it needs repairing, where do I start? I'm very ignorant about hardware, so please try to explain simply! I do have a friend who can help me if at-home repairs are all that's needed, though.

    Esther,
Have you ever done an Archive and Install of your OS? If so, you may have a Previous System folder on your hard drive taking up a lot of space. This can safely be deleted.
Some folks delete files regularly, but forget to empty the trash. It isn't gone (and doesn't free up space) until you empty the trash.
You may want to download Monolingual, which will allow you to remove unnecessary languages and foreign fonts. Most people recommend keeping around 5 gigs free to allow for smooth operating in Tiger.
Try booting into Safe Mode. This will take awhile longer than a normal startup because it does a file check and repair of the hard disk.
You will see your normal desktop. Once completely started up, restart normally, and go to Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility and repair permissions on the hard drive, as Barry has instructed above. (After repairing my hard drive via Safe Mode, I always repair permissions, even if I have done so recently.)
Hope you are on your way to a happier, quieter hard drive.

  • Ibook making car alarm noise

    Hi everyone --
This topic was actually discussed in a thread that was last posted to in May (I'm including a link), but I am reviving it because I am having a problem similar to that of the original poster. In short -- last night my ibook started making a noise like a car alarm -- three very soft noises followed by three louder ones. I shut it down by pushing the power key for 10 seconds and the alarm noise stopped and I reset the memory and rebuilt the desktop but when I started up again, I got the alarm noise plus a flashing question mark on the start up screen.
The posters on the earlier thread seemed to suggest that this was a sign of imminent HDD failure (does this mean your hard drive?) and my question is -- is this true? Has anybody else had a similar experience.
I should say that I'm running OSX 10.1.something on the ibook and it has the classic environment as well.
    Thanks!
    Gina
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1251153

    Hi Gina,
In the thread that you have referenced, we are still waiting on the results of the HDD (Hard Disk Drive) autopsy to be performed by the OP (Original Poster).
While we are awaiting those results, all we have to go by are the comments made by the OP and the corroborating post by user DSWright, in that the alarm noise is associated with the failure of the hard drive, as indicated by the S.M.A.R.T. status and the obvious failure of the OP's HDD, plus the nonoccurrence of the noise subsequent to the HDD being replaced.
At this stage, all we can say is that the noise provides strongly circumstantial evidence of imminent HDD failure.
If I was in your situation, I would take this as being symptomatic of HDD failure, and back up your important files.
I hope that Andrew will forgive a little Aussie humour when I say that, this is the 'recession' that Hass had to have!
    Cheers.
