Lightweight browser?

Hi folks
I looked at Activity monitor while running Safari3 on the iBook, as my son complained that an internet game (Runescape - a java based game) was slow compared to the MacBook Pro (duh, of course it's slower!). Activity Monitor showed the CPU running at capacity while on Runescape. I was curious about whether there was a browser that I could use that was lighter on the CPU. Maxxing the RAM has helped, as there was still some unused!
I Googled, but wondered whether this forum might give a more reliable answer?
Anyway, best wishes for the holiday season, and I look forward to the replies.

It may help to close all other applications excepting the browser he's trying to play the game in. If that doesn't help, restarting the iBook before launching the browser and loading the game may help.
As alternative browsers, you can try Camino, Opera, SeaMonkey, OmniWeb, or Shiira.
The iBook G3 500 MHz came out in 2001, so you are looking at a six-year-old computer and it's not going to run all of the newest things, obviously.
I've got a 12" iBook G3 600. It got noticeably slow trying to process complex Java or Flash browser embedded applications. The complexity of the embedded application is going to be the reason for maxing out CPU usage and not the browser. It probably would help to close as many applications as possible, but the machine just isn't well suited for many more recent Java application.
It's also a little bit flaky with AirPort, but I hardly used it after getting my 14" iBook G4 1.42. That was considerably faster, and even that's outdated compared to my new Santa Rosa MacBook.

  • Is APEX the tool for a lightweight browser based query only front end?

I'm tasked with prototyping a lightweight browser based front end to display consolidated customer information. It needs to be callable from half a dozen disparate and mostly non-Oracle applications, each passing in a customer id parameter. In my mind I've already marked-down the only front-end tool I have experience of - Forms10g as being too resource intensive to be continually started up and closed down (plus the initial potential JVM download to locked-down PC's). That leaves me with a couple of options (as far as I can see) - APEX or ADF Faces. I'm slightly worried about the steep learning curve for a J2EE environment plus the possible compatibility issues with ie 5.5 ( I know, I know ). And finally, my question - I've got a good feeling about it but does APEX seem like a good fit for this sort of task?

It needs to be callable from half a dozen disparate and mostly non-Oracle applications, each passing in a customer id parameter. Chris - They want to be able to hit a button in these other applications and see a browser window pop-up (quickly!), view the customer details (composite picture sourced from a data warehouse) then close the browser window and go back to their app. Needs to be lightweight for speed so APEX seemed a good idea.
Denes - Thanks. I'm thinking that the users will regularly open this browser session from their app then close the APEX window to return - probably time and time again. Did you find that establishing a connection and getting the page up made it slow. Is there something I should concentrate on to make sure that aspect performs?

  • ADF Faces or APEX for a lightweight browser-based front end.

I'm tasked with prototyping a lightweight browser based front end to display consolidated customer information. It needs to be callable from half a dozen disparate and mostly non-Oracle applications. The idea is that each application will have a button that can kick off a browser session to see a data-warehouse sourced view of a customer. Forms10g (where my experience lies) seems too resource heavy for the constant opening/closing of this little application but APEX looks like a good fit with not too steep a learning curve and the guys on the forum thuoght it was well suited. ADF Faces seems to have a steep learning curve given that I don't have any Java experience but a small view-only app like this might be a good place to gain experience useful for more complex apps. My question is whether ADF Faces is a goot fit for this sort of task. If anyone has used ADF Faces and APEX I'd be very grateful for their thoughts.

    Thanks for those pointers Grant.
Just a couple of further questions. As a company we're stuck on Internet Explorer 5.5 for another 18 months or so (>5,000desktops!). Does that exclude ADF Faces as an option given the prune-faced geriatric nature of the browser we're using (we're also on NT4.0 :-) Also, they're likely to be in and out of this screen like a fiddler's elbow and I'm wondering if the start-up effort using ADF Faces is likely to be significantly more resource intensive than an APEX equivalent.
My background is Oracle*Forms (since 2.0) and it would be nice to make a start on a technology that could be used in place of Forms in more complex apps - I just need to be able to justify the likely increased costs to people focused predominantly on this project's costs.

  • The Nokia E51: The things that work, and the thing...

Wonderful phone. Let me list my accomplishments and outstanding challenges.
    Challenges
    * Finding a video player that will play common formats like xVid in LANDSCAPE format. I did find a free app that will download and play anything on Youtube, but again not landscape.
    * Need to find a video recorder that records with a better frame rate. Is there one?
    * SIP voip calls remain a challenge.. Not sure if the issue is NAT traversal or that I just have the settings wrong or that the issue is the voip/sip provider.. Have been able to get Gizmovoip to work, BUT call quality to land lines is less than I get on Skype-Out (using Fring). With VoipBuster it seems to connect to the service, but when making a call it just sits there without response or connecting or anything else happening. So would still like to do smooth, cheap and reliable SIP.. Any thoughts on providers? Needs to be cheap (or free) to USA, Holland and Thaland.
    * Built in Web browser sometimes crashes (vanishes). Sometimes even just after opening it up and looking at the bookmark list, or shortly after opening a basic page like Google or BBC News PDA.
    * How to change the user-agent of this web browser.. Some sites are determined to present me their 'light' version. People: "Light" is not good when it comes to WiFi phones, or beer. So need to change the user-agent that the browser presents. Opera Mini goes some way to reduce the problem; excellent little browser that, and the best to use when your connection isn't WiFi (and/or not free/unlimited or slow)
    * How to select and copy (to paste elsewhere) text from a web page? Would like for example to be able to use the edit key (#) and drag & select the mouse pointer.
    * Nimbuzz is a free program that allows you to chat to MSN, Yahoo Chat (etc, etc) AND Skype chat. It's weird on this phone though, sometimes it just does't start when I try to open it. Can use Fring of course, but the chat function in Nimbuzz is better. Also think Nimbuzz leaks less GPRS bytes in overhead, which is nice when paying by the kilo/megabyte.
    * Need to find a Calendar & Todo GTD type program that kicks **bleep**, rather than sucks it.
    * Some good games would be nice. Suggestions? Would love a good pinball or other simple yet addictive arcade stuff. I loved the old Nokia 9 Ball Pool as well
    * Standby screen sometimes flashes/flickers. It seems it's updating something, but the effect is annoying. It's not a hardware glitch, the background wallpaper remains visible. it's just the Standby items that briefly blink.
    * My phone has English and Thai as languages. I *NEED* Dutch T9. Why is finding & adding a couple more languages as hard as the Quest for the Holy Grail? Come ON..
    * You can really feel the phone heating up when it's working hard, just as with a Skype-Out call.. I'm not suffering burns or anything, but is that normal?
    * On S60 v2 you could go into 'Applications' and set that certain applications were allowed to access the internet. Options included 'always allow', 'ask every time' and 'ask first time'. Where did that go? Some apps have a habit of asking to connect a couple times. I want to just allow them access. (Or ideally, access only when connected to a particular access point or access point group.)
    Accomplishments (SOLVED)
    - Getting rid of T9 words that I added but that these days become the first suggested word.. Found a way to revert back to the common word 'is' after adding 'HR' (as in human resources) to the dictionary which in hindsight is a boneheaded thing to do.. (T9 didn't used to work that way on my last Symbian phone)
    - External Bluetooth keyboard 'justworks' out of the box, great.
    - Wifi search, signal reception and configuration is amazing.
    - Must-Haves: File system access with the free Y-Browser, Fring chat/Skype calls, Gmail client (lighter than the built in one), emTube (for Youtube vids).
    - Also Google maps is pretty amazing, it even tracked my position using GSM triangulation when I was *WAY* upcountry in Northern Thailand.. Sometimes though it says 'position not availabs le', is that a phone thing or a network operator thing that they didn't list the GPS position of their signal towers?
That's it so far.. has it been a week already..?! I just don't know how I ever lived without one.

    > People complaining about video player and picture taking
    > capabilities should have bought an NSeries.
To a degree I agree when it comes to hardware; like E51 includes a 2 MP camera which honestly is fine for business functions like taking the occasional pic of a whiteboard drawing or the like.
However business people also want to show people pictures of their kids or something, and on a phone that's got plenty of hardware punch it seems just petty to ship it with a handicapped picture browser.
Same applies to music.. On those long flights you do actually want to listen to music..
I think this whole N vs E vs number series is just a case of over-marketing your stuff. I buy E51 because it had all the features I valued at a great price; nothing else enters into it. The next choice would actually have been 6110 Navigator, a number series phone. Or if an N series then probably an N80i, again similarly priced.
    > Eseries is or is marketed as a business phone. It should
    > perform well when it comes to business yet the most common
    > task of syncing outlook email is out of the question.
The irony is that the best e-mail implementation is actually GMail.. Get e-mails in a very lightweight browser AND be able to quickly search and retrieve ANY e-mail sent in the last 3 years or so. Really that's all that's needed. (well, along with better support for attachments, but the server-based model works very well I think.
    > PCSuite is obsolete. Even in its 6.85 version as it only
    > offers sync with Outlook express while the newer version of
    > Windows Mail is something people from Nokia are not yet
    > aware.
Yeah I never quite understood that application. There seems so much redundancy there.. I mean you just want to copy files to and from the phone, so if the thing works like a USB drive then that really is just fine to move either pictures or music or anything else. I tried the i-tunes wannabe app once and honestly I don't see the poing of converting my mp3's to whatever it's converting to. The original mp3 sounds just fine and I have plenty of space on the memory card.
And then as a separate there should be sync to Outlook and that's pretty much it.
Backup....: again that's either just copying files, OR syncing. My sync to outlook IS my backup.
Modem/connections: I'd rather just see that as a modem driver for Windows and be done with it.
    > I own an E51 and sometimes it fails to see my music on my 8Gb
    > card.
Yeah, it's not smart enough to notice by itself that a metric **bleep**ton of new tunes showed up so you have to manually go 'update'. Oh well.
    > Switching programs sometimes leaves me with a white screen
    > for a couple of minutes.
I don't get that.. UNless perhaps the app crashed in a serious way, usually something pretty beta like Fring.
    > Yet I don't complain cause is a new product and a new
    > firmware will probably address those issues.
    > But not being able to take my Outlook inbox with me
    > it's disappointing, frustrating and unacceptable.
I'd be inclined to auto-forward all my work email to Gmail and be done with it. Then you have years of email always with you.
    > Come on Nokia you can do better than this.
Are you kidding, they're all working on making their stuff look and feel like iPhone, just like every other phone company out there. Waste time in syncing email and multiple to-do levels? Sorry, not very hip, even for a business phone.
And to be sure, look at all the business people buying iPhones as if they were buying donuts.. iPhone COMPLETELY lacks major and sometimes very basic phone / business features but they don
t CARE as it browses the net, shows pictures, plays music. Again, Nokia tries to over-market and over-segment.. Get a cool 'everything' phone out there and everyone will buy it, business people included. Heck, 'business functions' just means 'business software'. For sure there's no such thing as business hardware..

  • Opening applications externally in luakit via vimperatoresque "follow"

    Hey guys,
I wanted a lightweight browser and after trying many (midori, xombrero, qupzilla, jumanji, dillo), I settled on luakit (+ privoxy). I use my keyboard for most tasks, so it's no surprise that my loyalties are towards awesome and, henceforth, the equally customizable and vimperator-inspired luakit! Vim is my favorite text editor, so getting my luakit experience to seamlessly blend with the rest of my work is one of my priorities.
This is hardly an original contribution, but I thought it would be useful for anybody new to luakit and facing the same problem I was. I searched online but wasn't able to find an effective way to open files externally (videos, pictures and pdfs) apart from this, but it requires using the mouse, which to me, feels a bit awkward.
luakit fortunately has key-bindings borrowed from vimperator that allow users to "follow" links. Usually 'F' and 'Shift+F' serve most purposes (these open a link in the current tab and a new tab respectivey). Similar functionality can be achived using the ';' key followed by another key to "do things" with the selected link. For example, following ';' with say 'Y' allows users to yank urls. Following ';' with 'O' opens the link in the current tab.
My idea was to connect ';' with another key, say 'd', to instruct luakit to use external applications to open the selected link. Adding the following to the end of your 'binds.lua' achieves just this:
    add_binds("ex-follow", {
-- Yank element uri to open in an external application
key({}, "d", [[Hint all links (as defined by the `follow.selectors.uri`
selector) and set the primary selection to the matched elements URI,
so that an external app can open it]],
    function (w)
    w:set_mode("follow", {
prompt = "video", selector = "uri", evaluator = "uri",
    func = function (uri)
    assert(type(uri) == "string")
    uri = string.gsub(uri, " ", "%%20")
    luakit.selection.primary = uri
    if string.match(uri, "youtube") then
    luakit.spawn(string.format("mpv %s", uri))
w:notify("trying to play file on mpv " .. uri)
    elseif string.match(uri, "vimeo") then
    luakit.spawn(string.format("mpv %s", uri))
w:notify("trying to play file on mpv " .. uri)
    elseif string.match(uri, "vine") then
    luakit.spawn(string.format("mpv %s", uri))
w:notify("trying to play file on mpv " .. uri)
elseif string.match(uri, "pdf" or "PDF") then
    luakit.spawn(string.format("~/.config/scripts/pdfFromURL %s", uri))
w:notify("trying to read file via zathura ")
    elseif string.match(uri, "jpg") then
    luakit.spawn(string.format("feh -x %s", uri))
    w:notify("file contains jpg " )
    else
    luakit.spawn(string.format("feh -x %s.jpg", uri))
    w:notify("no jpg extension | unrecognized")
    end
    end
    end),
Adding this allows you to use the follow mode with keystrokes ';' and 'd' and once a selection is made, it opens one of the above mentioned external applications. For instance, youtube, vimeo and vine links are opened via mpv (which is a sweet-sweet video player; this also does away with the requirement to use flash for most videos and the prayers for a html5 video to play!). PDFs are opened via zathura. Now, zathura cannot open http links automatically, so the file needs to be downloaded to some temporary location and then opened by zathura. I've written this routine in a small script called pdfFromURL, which can be saved where ever you wish (I've saved it in ~/.config/scripts). This is pdfFromURL:
    url=$1
    file="${url##*/}"
    echo $file
    case "$file" in
    *\%20* )
    urxvtc -e aria2c --allow-overwrite=true -d /var/tmp $url -o lousy_file_name_that_had_spaces.pdf
    zathura /var/tmp/lousy_file_name_that_had_spaces.pdf
    # echo "found a damned space in file name!"
    urxvtc -e aria2c --allow-overwrite=true -d /var/tmp $url
    zathura /var/tmp/$file
    esac
The above script uses aria2c, zathura and urxvtc. This can be modified as per your requirements.
The picture opening really isn't necessary, but is kind of useful for sites like reddit.
luakit is a really cool browser for being so accessible to costumization (I've never written a single line of lua code previously)!
I hope this post helps at least one other person.
    Cheers!

  • Embed Web Page in Portlet

Is there a portlet available that would act as a lightweight browser? I'd like to be able to incorporate a web page, specified initially by a URL, into a portlet. I don't have access to the JSP -- it's extnernal to my app. I'm guessing there's a really simple way to embed this in the portal.
    Thanks,
    Chris Peltz
    Software Technologist
    Hewlett-Packard Co.

Ok, I think I found the answer myself...use <iframe> tags to embed the web page in a JSP page. Works great, and I can easily embed this into a portal.
My followup question. Say the page I'm accessing has a series of graphics that are displayed at the top of the page in a table, e.g.:
    <img src="images/gs/spacer.gif" width="8" height="40"/>
    <img src="images/company.gif"></td-->
Is there anyway that I can filter all pages displayed in the iframe not to show these images? Kind of like a stylesheet or HTML trasnform that could be applied on all pages in the iframe?

  • Latest Adobe Flash Player version is not compatible with our android tablet - can I install an earlier AFP version that will work?

    Hi...
    ...and thanks for reading this:
We have a Nextbook Premium8 tablet that is hardly two years old. We had to reset to original factory settings, and in doing so lost our Adobe Flash Payer app. Upon trying to re-install AFP, we received a message that our tablet wan not compatible with the latest AFP version.
Is there an earlier, archived AFP version that will work with our tablet, and if so, which version - Flash Player 11.1 for Android 4.0 (11.1.115.81) from Sept 10, 2013, possibly???
It seems almost unbelievable that our tablet should be this obsolete for use with Adobe Flash Player after such a short period of only two years.
    Thank you once again,
    Robert Lucas

  • Midori and Java

    Hello,
after I found midori in the extra repository I installed it an it works fine.
The only thing that doesn't work is the javaplugin.
Jre is installed and works with every browser I testet(Firefoy, Epiphany, Opera).
    Can anyone help me?
    Greetings
    Zumpfi

The website here mentions it being a lightweight browser and also does not mention anything about Java support.
    So its probably not supported.
On the other hand, the faq suggests pointing to the mozilla plugins folder to use Flash. Maybe its the same for Java as well
    Try it out Midori FAQs

  • Flash player wont work on android anymore

I noticed this morning that chrome is no longer supporting flash on android devices. It tells me the same thing FireFox for android does that you need to update your browser and or flash plugin. I went ahead and checked updates for chrome and was fully updated. After that decided to uninstall and re-install the updates for it as well restarting my phone and still no luck. Checked adobe and says there hasn't been any mobile updates for flash since December. So was just hoping that this is just a temporary issue they are working to resolve? Checked on iPhone and chrome still seemed to work correctly with flash, was just android. I use a Galaxy S4 and had a friend of mine who also has another droid phone try and was the same issue for him. I've been using android phones for years and didn't change anything on my phone and the issue just appeared today.

  • Live Preview is not working for me

Live Preview is not working for me.  I've read many other forums and tried everything and I still get the same issue that everyone else has mentioned.  I'm on Chrome  Version 34.0.1847.116 m .  I have multiple user profiles with Chrome so not sure if that makes a difference.
Adobe Edge team, for a lightweight browser that should be easy to use, this does not make it easy.  Hopefully you can implement a fix soon that works for all cases as I was really looking forward to trying this out and I'm unable to.

I am having issues as well.
Running through the intro tutorials - Just the basic HTML tutorial files. When initiating live preview, I restarted Chrome as prompted for debugging, After restart the preview page loads fine a single time, works for about 10 seconds or so and then disconnects. I cannot get it to reconnect without restarting the program, but the same thing happens.
Live Preview Error: Unable to Load Development Page
The live preview icon remains orange - as if connected, but no changes write to the preview window in HTML or CSS.
Ive seen the other threads, but none of those items seem to fix my issue.
Anything I can do here besides wait for update? Love the basic product - the editing features are awesome, but until live preview + reliable FTP is set, I'll probably stick with current coding solutions.

  • Image Browser downloads to wrong folder

I couldn't find a better category for this question than iPhoto. Sorry if there is one.
I just got a Canon powershot A630 camera. it's great. I was using iPhoto to download images and that was fine. But I thought the Image Browser software that came with the camera would offer more functionality. And i guess it does but I'm having a lot of difficulties with it.
I called Canon and spoke with tech support but they just tell me it works for them so it must be my problem. They are using mac 10.4 and I have 10.3.9 so that might be part of it. The Image Browser version is 5.7.
    Here's what happens:
I have specified under "Preferences" in the "Camera Window" (that comes up when I connect the camera to the computer) for the images to be downloaded to a folder I created called "Powershot A630" which resides in the Pictures folder. The default location for download is that same Pictures folder. And that's where the images go, NOT to the folder I specified.
I've tried also setting that in the EOS window (which can only be started when the camera is NOT connected to the computer). Still doesn't help.
The Canon guy ran me through a scenario where I "select" pictures for downloading. In this scenario I get a chance to specify the destination, and in fact, it shows the destination I chose in preferences. And it does download to the correct place. But then, where the Image Browser main window lists "favorite" folders, my destination folder is now listed twice. Not desireable I think.
At this point, I think I'll just go back to iPhoto, but if anyone has a solution, or other reasons why I should use Image Browser I'd love to hear.
One more thing. The second Canon guy I talked with took me into "Image capture" utility and had me set the destination folder there. Don't see where that has any bearing on the activity at hand, though.
    Thanks a lot,
    Bruce

    Smtr,
See my responses (marked "B-") interleaved with your great note...
    Bruce,
I love my Canon Powershot A620. The 630 looks
awesome. My Image Browser is version 5.5, and I don't
know what changed with the next versions.
B- Yeah, the a630 is really nice. I previously had an A40 and this is a major step up.
Anyway, the second Canon guy sounds a bit more
knowlegdeable about Macs. The preferences in Image
Capture are where you set which application (or none)
opens automatically when the Mac detects a camera or
card. So if setting it in Image Capture doesn't work,
then I'm not sure what will. I'm afraid I can't
answer your core question here about how to download
    to your preferred folder.
B- Thanks for explaining that. It's very clear. I did not understand that from my conversation with the Canon rep.
As for your choice of which app to use, consider
this: Image Browser is just that - an application for
browsing your hard drive and displaying the image
files in various ways. iPhoto is NOT an image
browser. It is a photo organizer with lightweight
editing capabilities and limited version control.
B- That's good to know, too. I was assuming that Imagebrowser was a substitute for iPhoto and I was hoping for increased funcionality. And it does have lots of stuff in it, which was more confusing than anything else.
iPhoto is a database application, so when you use it
you should NOT manipulate items in its library folder
    structure from within the Finder.
B- yeah, I had discovered that
    With an image
browser you always manipulate the files yourself from
Finder. You alone are responsible for the
organization of your images. With a database you
manipulate your files from inside the application,
and let it take care of the file management
automatically. The two apps are incompatible. If you
import your photos to iPhoto you should not access
them using Image Browser, because you could damage
the library. I know you weren't suggesting combining
the two, I am just trying to highlight the
    differences between them.
So ask yourself if you like iPhoto's capabilities. If
you were happy with it before, then there's really no
need to switch to Image Browser. It's like apples and
... cows (oranges are too similar) and the choice is
    up to you.
B- the one thing I like so far about imagebrowser is the easy way to view the image full screen. Have not figured out how to do that in iPhoto.
BUT, there is a task inside my Image Browser that I
absolutely LOVE because it does something I can't do
with iMovie. Its called "MovieEdit Task" in
    Applications>Image Browser>DVCUtility. It's a great
little thing that lets you take separate video clips
and combine them into one movie. It's much simpler
than iMovie, and optimized to work with your Canon's
video clips. (Whereas iMovie prefers miniDV tape.) It
will allow you to rotate a video clip 90 degrees, so
if you turned the camera on its side to record a
movie clip you can rotate it to portrait view. I have
done this and used the clip in iMovie, and it was
perfect. Without it I would have needed an iMovie
plug-in or had to buy QuickTime Pro.
B- I'll have to look into that. I also have a digital camcorder and have used iMovie. And I'll definitely look into the rotation. My novice friend used my camcorder and shot a bunch of shots of our band with the camcorder rotated 90 degrees.
So, I sometimes use Image Browser due to the way it
handles video clips. Here, it is superior to iPhoto.
But for every day use and for the storage,
organization, and manipulation of my photos, I use
iPhoto (in conjunction with PhotoShop Elements for
    real editing).
    Just my 4¢.
B- Thanks for the great letter!

  • How do I get rid of the Harry Potter pictures in my 'browser'?

I opted to place Harry Potter in the browser ...now I want to remove it. How can I remove it. I did this via a suggested google entry

  • What's a lightweight method to call a web service from an applet?

So, writing web service clients in java is pretty easy these days using the JAX-RPC library. Problem is in an applet you want it to load fast. I need my applet to call a web service, but don't want to include all the 'baggage' that comes along with JAX-RPC. It looks like you need XML libraries for JAX-RPC stuff to run, and those are huge jar files (many megabytes). I want a lightweight way to call web services. They are my own web services, so I don't need a general solution. There's got to be a way to just form a soap message and use http to send it. It seems like that has been done already.
On a related note. I will be passing byte arrays as parameters, so if I do try and form my own SOAP XML message, how are byte typically encoded into these messages?
Thanks a bunch for any suggestions.

The scripting prompt is due to locally installed WebHelp. If you put it on a server, it should work fine. (Or try to enable Mark of the Web for your output.)
The problem with CSH not working is probably because the CSH is not enabled in the output. In the single source layout settings, make sure that all your map files are selected:
The easiest way I see it to create a simple API yourself. (We did it for Delphi and C# and it took about ten minutes.) You can just create a URL and feed it to the default browser. If you want to be able to load new help calls in the same tab, you will have to hook into the browser somehow.
The URL's are really easy to create. See http://www.wvanweelden.eu/article-category/context-sensitivity for a complete overview of all your options in HTML and WebHelp.
