Lightweight chm and djvu (and pdf) viewer?

On windows I have used SumatraPDF, a very fast and lightweight app that can read pdf, djvu, and chm, among others.
On arch I'm using epdfview for PDFs, but is there anything light and fast for chm and djvu?  and of course, better one app to handle them all.

I did look here, and didn't find anything for chm or djvu.

Of course, and I know I can do some guesswork based on the dependencies etc, to pick a light/fast one.  but the forums are all about sharing experience, right?
OK, for chm I have settled on xchm.  it opens instantly large files and is very good all around.   one problem, it frequently drops the spaces between word, suchasthis.    is there a fix?  are the others (gnochm, chmsee, etc) better?
thanks.

  • How to customize CHM and PDF output

I can easily generate CHM and PDF using the Generate Output option offered by DITA-FMx, but the output is just standard and I would like to customize it according to the company style. Which files should I work on to modify fonts, colours, indentation, etc, both for CHM and PDF?

For PDF output, you should be using the Generate Book from Map command. This is one of the main reasons to use FrameMaker for DITA .. the high quality PDF output. You'll never achieve the same level of quality through XSL-FO as you do through native Frame. See this video for info on leveraging DITA-FMx features for PDF publishing ..
    http://blog.leximation.com/2010/03/pdf-publishing-with-dita-fmx-1-1/
To customize the formatting of any output generated through the DITA Open Toolkit (which is what is used by the Generate Output command), you have to modify the XSL and CSS files in the DITA-OT. The "proper" way to do this is to create an OT plugin that provides you with a custom Ant target that does exactly what you want. You can then deliver this plugin to others on your team who need to generate the same output, and you haven't mucked around with the core OT files. You can also just dive in and tweak the files directly, but when you break something you won't be able to test with the original files without restoring from backups.
You can start by tweaking the CSS files, but if you need to make structural modifications to the way the HTML is generated, you'll need to do some XSL work. Note that setting the @outputclass value on the DITA topic files, passes that value into the corresponding element in the @class attribute of the generated HTML. This is a good way to allow you to control formatting of specific elements.
The best place to go for instructions/info on exactly which files to modify in the OT and how to build a plugin, is the dita-users Yahoo group. This is definitely the list to be on for anything that relates to the DITA-OT.
Scriptorium Publishing has a nice whitepaper on customizing the OT ..

Also, the dita.xml.org website has some useful info.

  • FF 19 and PDF viewer issue

So the latest version of Firefox 19 comes with a built in PDF viewer.
The problem that I found is that this viewer at its present time does NOT show fillable fields ina PDF, or let the user type into these fillable fields, or show the electronic print and instructions buttons we place at the top of most of our PDF "forms".
    Ex: http://www.tmcc.edu/financialaid/downloads/forms/1213/FINAConsortiumAgree1213.pdf
This form should show buttons at the top and let a user fill it out. It does with the Reader plugin. In FF 19's built in PDF viewer I cant seem to do anything.
We presently make all our PDF forms fillable, so if this is an issue, hopefully a fix or update can be found.

This new viewer was an ugly surprise. I DO NOT want pdfs to open in Firefox. I want FIrefox to give me the option to open or download. If I select open, I want it to open in my copy of Acrobat (not the Reader), and certainly not inside Firefox. Can anybody help me?

  • Illustrator and pdf view problem

Hello, I am completely stumped by this one:
Created a document in Adobe Illustrator cs5
    1 Visible layer
    1 Hidden layer
Saved a copy as a pdf
The visible layer and the hidden layer are both seen on someone else’s computer using Reader version 10.0.1.434
I am using Adobe Acrobat X Version 10.0.3 and can not see the hidden layer, only the visible one.
I create pdf's for proofs all the time like this and have never had this problem. I have done nothing out of the ordinary. I do not understand why I can not see the hidden layer and someone else can on their system. I have tired opening up the file as a Google image as well, and still do not see the hidden file.
I know I should not be able to see the hidden layer, but why can someone else see it?
Thanks in advance for anyones help.

I took a look and what would do this is if your client has Apply Layers Overrides checked
The three small white filed and black stroke paths are on a hidden layer that only shows it I make it visible or have this option checked.
Tell them to uncheck the option.
I am adding this as well if you check that option then save as from Acrobat X 10.1.0  as Acrobat 1.6 this happens when you reopen it but if you have it save with Acrobat 1.8 the hidden layer will not be visible even after a save as unless you check this option again.
Leads me to believe your client is working with Acrobat 7 or 8

  • Snow Leopard: Incompatibility with gaming and pdf viewing

I understand this may have been posted before, but it hasn't been by me. I'm a gamer, both on my computer and with tabletop games. I find difficulty in enjoying both types of gaming when my brand new, near top-of-the-line computer isn't up to the task running some games because the graphic engine can't handle some modern rendering, and then when Preview's PDF library no longer supports nonstandard fonts. For example, OpenGL doesn't render liquid effects and advanced lighting in World of Warcraft, regardless of the 8 gig of ram I have installed in the banks of my i7 iMac. Also, Paizo's PDF books for Pathfinder and a handful of other PDF documents appear fine within Adobe Acrobat Reader, but in using Preview (which I VASTLY desire due to its ease of use and better performance), text is often garbled and the capital A does not appear in section headers.
Are any plans in the works to correct these issues? I hate to think I'll have to use third party software, or worse yet, a machine running Windows, to get the most out of my gaming experience. Thanks for reading; hopefully this will not fall upon blind eyes and deaf ears.

Well, it will certainly fall upon those that can do nothing about it. Apple Engineers don't hang out here so they'll never read what you wrote.

    Hello,
I would like to download the manuals of the SoudBlaster Audigy 2 ZS Platinum Pro
Unfortunately the manuals downloadable from the Creative web site are in chm format. Is there a way to download the manuals in a more printable format like pdf or doc?
    Cheers

I'm afraid the only format available at this moment for the Audigy 2 ZS Platinum Pro is the CHM format only. Even the manual from the installation is having the same CHM format.

  • Serious bugs in pdf and doc view

    Hello
I have looked on the forum for other postings on this and have not found them if they exist. I have had a Pre Plus for about six weeks (Verizon) and overall love it and am glad I got it. Hoping some things like GPS get improved (which I know is most likely Verizon not Palm) but this bug is the first thing that has the potential to seriously hamper my experience with the phone:
This week I took a work trip and before leaving added several (5-12) docs and pdfs to my Pre so I could access them on the fly during the trip when it was not possible or practical to use my laptop. This included some pdfs of directions and maps since the GPS is not up to snuff on the Verizon phone. Others were longer documents I needed to refer to when out in the field (ag related work visiting farms).
Here's the problem, which applies equally to both doc and pdf view:
-menu freezing: more than half the time the menu would freeze. In other words, not let me scroll. I could open documents on the screen but not scroll to see others further down.
-doc and pdf file freezing: the file would often work fine for a few minutes, i.e. I could zoom, move across the page with the touch screen, change pages, etc. with no problem. But then after a few minutes they would often freeze, allowing me to see only what was currently on the screen. Shutting down the app and reopening only worked sometimes. I often had to do that many (5-7) times to get it to work again. Maybe rebooting would have worked but the Pre takes way way too long to boot up for that to be at all practical in the context I was using it in.
Do these apps break down when too many docs or pdfs are loaded? I wouldn't consider a dozen too many so I am hoping the answer to that is no.
I really hope Palm figures this out and can fix it. (I hope they allow for more zooming while they're at it.) In the meantime, are there alternative apps to use for docs and pdfs? I would pay a reasonable price for it if it exists. I have only found ebook readers so far.
I also posted this on the precentral forum here
    http://forums.precentral.net/showthread.php?p=2467182#post2467182
and you'll see that although most people report that they do not have this problem, a couple of other people apparently do.  For me it is a big problemwhich if not fixed will affect decisions on future phones...
Thanks to anyone who can help.

Did you re-try cloning with CCC after you had first re-trashed the items *directly from the 502 folder window* you obtained via Go to Folder?
If you can see the items in the *Go To Folder> /.Trashes/502* window, then you apparently have *two different* .Trashes>502 folders. The items that keep re-appearing in your Trash icon window (the ones you did the GetInfo on) are in the HD>.Trashes>502 folder of your external drive. The Go to Folder command that I gave you is looking at the HD>.Trashes>502 folder on your startup drive. The Trash icon on the Dock may not look at that folder - trashed items on the startup drive normally go into Home>.Trash, a completely different place.

  • Format on HTML report different than on PDF view

I have a Quote report based on Product Revenue that we send to our customers. I have it formatted nicely when initially displayed and also when viewed with the Printer Friendly HTML option. But... when I view it as a PDF, it is not even close.
The layout of the report uses a narrative section with HTML formatting to get the elements to align correctly, per the documentation. The HTML I use is as follows:
    Narrative Section formatting code:
    <table width="600">
    <tr><td colspan=3>  <div align="center"><b><font size="5" face="Times">
      @10</font><br>
    <font size="4" face="Times" >  Prepared Exclusively For: @8</font></b>
    </div></td>
    </tr>
      <tr> <th width="250"><div align="left">Quote Details</div></th> <th width="50">   </th><th width="300"><div align="left">Sales Manager Info:</div></th></tr>
    <tr>
    <td>Quote ID: @9</td><td> </td><td>Name: @16</td></tr>
    <tr>
    <td>Quote Date: @15</td><td> </td><td>Email: @17</td>
    <tr><td>Quote Expiration: @14</td><td> </td><td> </td></tr>
    <tr><td colspan=3><div align="center"><b>Phones - Cell:</b> @18, <b>Work:</b> @20, <b>Fax: </b> @19 </div></td></tr>
    </table>
Notes: @11Is there another way to get the HTML view and PDF view to look the same (or at least close)?
(more details and examples here --> [HTML and PDF Views|http://crm.nurserysupplies.com/images/CRM_HTML_and_PDF_views.doc])

To date, this is considered a product limitation. I just talked with an escalation manager regarding this very issue, and he offered to bring this up with the product managers/engineers on 5/15/09. I recommend escalating this issue and asking your escalation manager to do the same.

I had Adobe Acrobat ver. 5 which I was unable to uninstall due to some corrupt files.
Then I tried to install Adobe Acrobat Professional ver 8 . It popped up an error message that You already have a version of adobe which is to be removed. Hence I formatted my C: drive and then successfully installed Adobe Professional Ver 8 . It was a trial version for 30 days.
But when I tried opening Adobe Live Cycle which comes with it, a message popped up saying that Grace Period is over . Please download e-license. My friends who earlier had installed Adobe Professional from the CD are not getting any messages .

  • Hyperlinks to XLS, DOC, and PDF files that are included in a .chm file work intermittently.

    SUMMARY
Hyperlinks to XLS, DOC, and PDF files that are included in a
.chm file (and the Baggage Files) only work intermittently. The
only solution appears to be deleting the Temporary Internet Files.
    PROBLEM
    1. I place the XLS, DOC, or PDF file in the Windows
sub-directory that corresponds to the RoboHelp project sub-folder
where the topic in which I’ll place the hyperlink exists.
    2. I open the help project in RoboHelp HTML.
    3. I right-click on the project’s Baggage Files
sub-folder that corresponds to the Windows sub-directory in which I
placed the XLS, DOC, or PDF file (in step 1).
    4. I import the XLS, DOC, or PDF file.
    5. I open the topic in which I’m going to place the
    hyperlink in the WYSIWYG editor.
    6. I “drag and drop” the Baggage File into the
topic (in the WYSIWYG editor) to create a link to it.
    7. I save the changes and then generate HTML (.chm) help.
    8. I open the .chm file and click the hyperlink. The XLS,
DOC, or PDF file may or may not open.
    9. When the hyperlink works correctly, for DOC and XLS files,
a “File Download – Security Warning” dialog box
appears asking, “Do you want to open or save this
file?”. The buttons that are available are
    “Open”, “Save”, and “Cancel”.
These buttons work then as one would expect. (When the hyperlink
works correctly for a PDF file, it simply opens the PDF file in a
new window; there’s no prompt to save, open, or cancel.)
    10. When a hyperlink does NOT work, for DOC, XLS, and PDF
files, no dialog box or other visual message is displayed. Instead,
the sound that is associated with the “Exclamation”
program event is played (the “Windows XP
Exclamation.wav” file is the WinXP default).
    Other Notes:
    - The hyperlinks ALWAYS work when I view a topic using the
“View Selected Item” function (Ctrl+W) in the RoboHelp
    HTML project.
    - Once a hyperlink stops working, it will not start working
again until I delete all the Temporary Internet Files.
    - A hyperlink will stop working even if Internet Explorer
(iexplore.exe) is closed the entire time.
    WORKAROUND
Through trial and error, I have discovered that if a
hyperlink stops working, I can get it to work again using the
    following steps:
    1. Leave the .chm file open.
    2. Open Internet Explorer.
    3. Click Tools>Internet Options….
    4. From the “Internet Options” dialog box, select
    the “General” tab.
    5. Under the “Temporary Internet Files” section,
    click the “Delete Files…” button.
    6. From the “Delete Files” dialog box, select
“Delete all offline content” and then click
“OK”. The files are deleted and the “Delete
    Files” dialog box closes.
    7. Click “OK” to close the “Internet
    Options” dialog box.
    8. Without closing Internet Explorer and without re-starting
the .chm file, all the hyperlinks that didn’t work before
    will now work.
    GENERAL SYSTEM INFORMATION
    - Windows XP Pro, SP2
    - Internet Explorer 6.0.2900.2180
    - RoboHelp X5, 5.0.2 Build 801
    - HTML (.chm) help project files exist on my local machine
    - HTML (.chm) help file is run from my local machine
    - Project is under RoboSource version control
    TEMPORARY INTERNET SETTINGS
    - “Check for newer versions of stored pages” is
    set to “Automatically”
    - “Current location” for the Temporary Internet
files folder is set to “C:\Documents and Settings\My
    Username\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\”
    - “Amount of disk space to use” is set to
    “594” MB
    “View Files…”
    - An XLS or DOC file will be listed here if I click its
hyperlink and then click either “Open” or
“Save” from the “File Download – Security
    Warning” dialog box.
    - A file will appear here even if I click “Save”
and then click “Cancel” from the subsequent “Save
    As” dialog box.
    - If I click “Cancel” from the “File
Download – Security Warning” dialog box, the file does
not appear in the Temporary Internet Files folder.
    - When a file does appear in the Temporary Internet Files
folder, its Internet Address is displayed similar to the following:
    “ms-its:C:\PrimaryProjectFolder\ProjectName.chm::/SubFolderName/FileName.xls”
    “View Objects…”
Here’s a list of all the program files that appear:
    - “Microsoft Office Template and Media Control”
    (Last Accessed 12/13/06) (Version 12,0,6024,0)
    - “Shockwave ActiveX Control” (Last Accessed
    12/14/06) (Version 10,1,4,20)
    - “Shockwave Flash Object” (Last Accessed
    12/18/06) (Version 9,0,28,0)
    - “Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool”
    (Last Accessed 12/14/06) (Version 1,5,722,0)
    - “WUWebControl Class” (Last Accessed 12/13/06)
    (Version 5,8,0,2469)
Today is 12/18/06 so the only program file that is listed as
having been “Last Accessed” today is the
    “Shockwave Flash Object”.
    REQUEST FOR HELP
I really want to include certain PDF, DOC, and XLS files in
their native format in a .chm file. However, I need a better
solution to my problem than the one I discovered. What I really
want is to avoid the entire problem altogether.
Have anyone seen this before or have any suggestions?

You wont be able to do that. The embedded objects would appear as images only.

  • PDFs look different in Adobe reader and Acrobat professional compared to the built in PDF viewer on windows 8

    Hi there,
I have been trying to narrow down an issue we have been having for some time in printing PDF files and finding that they look different on paper compared to screen.  Up until today our big KIP plotter got the blame, but as I have been collecting notes on a little windows 8 tablet I noted that PDFs opened in the windows PDF viewer have the same visual defects as the printouts.  My example today is that on a CAD drawing there is a small box/frame with a number in their, I tried printing and the frame was completely blacked out.  As a test I tried saving the PDF as a TIFF file from Adobe Acrobat professional and this file had the same fault as the printed copy.  When I open it in the windows 8 pdf viewer I can see that there is a shading within this box that does not show on Adobe Reader (latest version 11.0.10.32), the adobe reader and acrobat pro version both show a white background to the box.  We have been having lots of issues with sections being missing from drawings and overly feint lines.
I am not sure where to start trying to narrow down why we are getting different results in different PDF readers.  Is there anyone who maybe able to point me in the right direction?  It almost feels like the shading or colour density is not being consistent when PDFs are being opened in different packages.
    Thanks in advance
    Andy

Some PDF viewers comply with the PDF ISO Standard (ISO 32000) "just enough" while others (such as Adobe's) fully comply.
As with anything there's a cost to using anything that comes from a "just enough" approach.
    Be well...

I have followed instructions on a forum on checking through 'Options' that my browser is still set to open pdfs inside Mozilla and it is.
It frequently comes up with a bar along the top saying 'This PDF might not be displayed correctly.' Then a button 'Open in Different Viewer', which I've tried pressing, but nothing has happened. (I don't actually want to open it in a different viewer, I want to open in Mozilla).
I'm currently doing a lot of research work and this makes it a lot longer so would REALLY appreciate any help :)

The built-in viewer has limitations, definitely. If you prefer that to Adobe Acrobat, you might try the latest "Development" version of the viewer, which may have improved feature support but with its limited test cycle, could be more crashy. There's a link to it about halfway down this page under Firefox:

Otherwise, you might need to use the Acrobat plugin. (I think you have seen the article, but just in case: [[How to disable the built-in PDF viewer and use another viewer]].)
