I am thinking of picking up an MacBook Air. For those of you that own one would you 1 - Recommend
2 - Recommend another laptop (Standard or Pro)
3 - No Recommend
I would use it for surfing the Internet, e-mail, documents, syncing with my iPad, iTouch and iPod. I am not interested in video, pictures (although I would have some on the unit), camera. Just a laptop computer.
All comments appreciated.

I recommend the new 13" Air. I had a 15" Macbook Pro from 2007, and the new Air is faster, lighter, and has a top class battery life of a realistic 6hrs. The 11" Air looks nice, but you'd need another machine for any extended period of work. The 13" is good as a main machine, and the screen resolution is excellent for long periods.
I have no fan or noise issues. In fact it remains very cool on my lap, unlike the Pro which heats up quite a bit. Go for the 4Gb version though, as you won't be able to upgrade the memory once you've bought the machine. Stick with the base 1.86GHz processor: I went for the higher processor but I think it reduces the battery span, and the 1.86GHz version is not really any slower for general tasks.
The SSD drive is way faster than you might think: Apps run nearly instantly, and it goes to sleep and wakes instantly when the li is opened/closed. You never need to shut it down.
My main grumble is that I find the casing a tad fragile: the casing 'moves' under my wrists lying on the space either side of the trackpad. This is my only real issue with the Air, but the old Air model was the same. One other thing: the Air doesn't have firewire, if that bothers you. Also, Ethernet access is through a USB-to-Ethernet adapter, which won't give 1000 base T speeds, more like 100 base T, again if that bothers you. Also, I do miss the backlighting on the keyboard.

I currently have Snow Leopard and am thinking of upgrading to Lion but have heard some bad things about it.  Should I upgrade or not? What do you like/dislike about Lion?

It is indeed all down to what you need to do with your machine.   Snow leopard is an excellent OS and as Baltwo suggests you have to check out your current apps and programs because PPC won't work on any higher OS than the one you have.
Andy's comment is very interesting and, I suspect, insider knowledge based     Certainly I would wait for Mavericks now it is on the horizon ... and then add six months or so for the bugs to be ironed out.
Good luck, whatever you do.   I'm staying with Snow Leopard.

  • Genius recommendation cannot mark like/dislike

I have been having an issue where when i am in the itunes store and browsing through genius recomendations I cannot select whether I like or dislike the suggested albums. I was having the problem for at least a few weeks, then decided to try the update 9.1.1.12. No dice after installation and restarts.
Also tried turning off the genius for the store and unticked it in preferences, restarted and turned genius back on. Still same behavior.
Any other ideas as to the possible cause and a fix?

I have had the same issue, starting when I updated to 9.1.1.12 (which according to my computer was 14/05/10).
Nice to know I'm not the only one affected.

  • A View Through Windows 8.1.1

    A View Through Windows 8.1.1
There above opens fine for me; sorry, didn't expect anyone would have difficulty w/ it.
Windows 8.1.1 or Windows 8.1 Update or KB2919355
Call it what you like, a rose by any other name is, still, a rose.
And this has brought some pretty rosy stuff to Win 8.1.  8.1 delivered a plethora of cool things to the initial Windows 8.0 platform but, I am not here, right now, to discuss that gold mine but, rather its Update, Win8.1.1. This small yet,
packed Update comes or will as an Auto Update via WU.  It installs quickly and easily.
Basically, its only requirement is having Windows 8.1 in place… an 8.0 device must be Upgraded to Windows 8.1 and then on to this Update.
Now, even though 8.1 responded to User feedback and requests, 8.1.1 has tried to take that endeavor, even, further.
Much of that is in regard to making the OS more intuitive, more familiar and more mouse friendly, catering to non-Touch environments and to have some things more overt.
A good portion of the Update impact on both Consumers and Businesses whilst some are value items specifically for enterprise.
Firstly, let’s address the ‘common ground’ and then look at the assets to or for businesses.
I will not delve into extreme details for this discussion but, will provide links which, will give you the full story.
However, the links go to the usual, sterile, propaganda and although, certainly, informative & enlightening, not the personal perspective that I would like to share, at this time.
I write in several tech forums, ergo, I have seen what people like, dislike or want.
8.1 does, indeed, indulge what people have been expressing.
It, also, I feel, helps make people enjoy using Store APPs more and helps draw then into the world of APPs.
A major part of the Update is in regard to APP handling and usage.
To me it’s mostly about APPs but, there are some other items so let’s tackle them, first.
May seem like little things but, sometimes doesn’t take much to make people happy.
And this does destroy the suggestion that MS doesn’t listen to End Users or care what they think or say.
On Start there, now, are Power & Search icons.  There are Rt Clk menus attached to the Start Tiles.
There’s a Search box on the ALL Applications screen.  Back to the Store APPS enhancements because I suggest, this is the, really, cool bit.
Some people have struggled over using the Switcher Bar, opening APPs, closing APPs and positioning and maneuvering or manipulating them.
Well, this is where things get exciting… NOW, the Store APPs can sit on the Task Bar
and they can be pinned.  NOW, they can be closed or minimised with a bar at the top of them.
NOW, as many as four can be enjoy with greater flexibility than ever before.
All of this making the OS easier and more similar to what people are accustom to having and doing.
And having APP icons permanently available on the task Bar is great since, any that are used consistently to get shut down by the OS on the Switcher Bar after a period of time. Nor does one have to pop out the Switcher Bar to access an APP.
Lastly, to carry the familiar Desktop experience across ALL screens, the Task Bar shows on every screen, even if it is a Store APP, Start or ALL Applications.
There are, also, a number of things that are not quite so obvious or superficial, some under-the-covers stuff, plus things relative to business/enterprise issues.
One thing having positive impact right across the board is support for low cost hardware.
With Windows 8.1 Update there is a continuance to fine-tune Windows performance to deliver a great user experience on the broad range of Windows devices. Specifically, with memory and disk space optimization in Windows 8.1 Update we now
enable Windows to run on even lower cost hardware with as low as 1GB of RAM and a 16GB hard drive.
So you ca see it is possible to convey the message that using the OS can, now, thanks to this Update be, even more enjoyable and appealing than it, already, was.
Things easier to find or see and done in established, already known ways, methods and comfort zones.
End Users will like what Win8.1.1 brings and offers them… so spread the word.
Now, for some important ‘bullets’ provided by the Update that IT Pros should know about and be able to enthusiastically impart, particularly, to thrilled Enterprise Users on top of the aspects, already, mentioned that are for everyone.
    >> Improvements to take advantage of new hardware innovation and support the latest devices, such as devices based on 64 bit Baytrail™ processors.
    >> Extended Mobile Device Management (MDM)
    >> Easier app deployment and management is app side loading
    And, also, exciting
licensing changes come with Windows 8.1 Update.
The big caveat here, the meaningful take-away for y’all, in my view, is there are many desirable facets contained in the Windows 8.1.1 Update.
It is a strength to know this content so it can be transmitted to End Users both, Consumer and Enterprise customers and clients.
There are things for which business folks will be grateful.
There are things that make the User Experience nicer for anyone and everyone.
KB2919355 may be small but, in my view, it packs a big punch.
Here are the links I promised for your further reading and information.

    The view from here, Drew:
Reading around the edges of the error message, are you seriously trying to find things of merit in the spring update?  They seem pretty few and far between to me.  800 MB (er, 200, er, who knows) for what?  a few dozen bugfixes?
If you know of something of substance in the update, please share, because I'm not finding much.
Why has there been so much hype about this version?  It was "leaked", then it has been getting press like what you're trying to show here.  Isn't the hype actually supposed to come with some substance as well?  Where is
    that substance?

  • Need to add flipping catalog to site

I am a newbie and have been tasked to add a clients catalog
on their site as a flipping catalog. The client wants to have a
image of their catalog added to a page. They also want the catalog
to open up as a flipping catalog. I have found several sources for
flipping books but I am a little lost on where these files will be
posted on the site. Will the original image be linked to a new page
    that holds the flipping book?
    I appreciateany help.
    Thanks

Your best solution is probably Flash-based. But IMO it is a
    horrible idea.
Talk about a usability nightmare. And does your client
    realize what a
maintenance nightmare they will have? What will you have to
    charge them just
to add a single product or change a single price?
If it was my client I would convince them to build a
    traditional database
shopping cart as I am absolutely certain it will produce far
    more sales,
although that partially assumes their product line isn't
    something so
off-the-wall as to possibly benefit from a wacky
    presentation. Barring that
I would say, "Thank you", followed by, "Goodbye". But that's
    just me. I
refuse to build sites I am certain will fail.
Left to their own devices many (most?) site owners would
    impose their own
likes, dislikes and preferences and usually severely impede
    any possible
success. I think part of my job is to discourage that. "Don't
    try this at
    home. We are professionals."

  • Samsung SCH-u370 vs. Kin TWOm ; Which would be better for the texter?

So my plan is going to end in about two months so I decided to research some new feature phones online.
Since I text often, I wanted a phone with a full keyboard, having a touch screen would be nice as well.
The Samsung SCH-u370 isn't offered on at VZW anymore, but Bestbuy online still has a stock of it.
The Kin TWOm looks like a very good phone (8MP camera, slide-out keyboard, etc.) but it didn't have good reviews for some reason.
I mainly use my phone for texting, but will call for roughly 1-2 hours every other night during the week.
Shelling out 50$ isn't a big deal for me, but free is always better.
For the users that have experience with either phone or even both, which would you reccomend and why?
    P.S.
    - If they're any other keyboard feature phones coming out in the next two months, I would love to take them into consideration.
    Thank you so much!

    I have both.
The u370 UI is much more polished, font sizes are great, you can adjust them. You can doodle/notate on pics. It's 3" resistive touchscreen. You can use finger nail or some dull pointer if touch is slightly off. I have not tested the e-mail/web browser as the phone doesn't have wi-fi and i don't have data plan. Music player is very basic, haven't tested video. No microSD card is included. The camera is 3MP, no flash, but there is night mode (more sensitive to light, but noisy images). You can doodle/notate over pics, great for making quick notes/directions. Because it relies on microSD for storage, you don't really need to use it with any specific software.
Twom, some parts of the UI can frustrate some people. Font sizes are not adjustable, and there are many areas where the font is thin and small. The built in email client is text only, and it displays some html code rather than stripping them clean. But it does work over both 3g or wifi. The e-mail client's UI is simple, nice to use. You can do full webmail through the browser. You can type notes/comments on pics taken, no sketch pad. 3.4" capacitive touchscreen. That means you can't use fingernail or pointers. There is a Zune player with tegra1 hardware, which means audio and HD video playback. 8GB overall storage with about 6+ GB usable for storage. And you have to use the Zune desktop software to get data on/off the phone. 8MP camera with auto focus, image stabilization, and led flash. But no extras like b&w/sepia modes, etc, etc. The browser is good for mobile sites and small websites, but large websites takes a while to load. Overall it works well enough for basic html & css over wi-fi. Also keep in mind it's unlikely to get an update.
I can't comment on texting as i don't have a text plan. The Twom keyboard is very tactile, you can hear it click, not mushy. If you really need a good browser on your phone, then you will need a smartphone. Between these two though, the Twom have the advantage in media, the u370 have the advantage as the easier to use phone. And it depends on how much you like/dislike the UI of either phone. The u370 have the more 'normal' UI. Whereas the Twom is more experimental looking, but cuts down the fluff.
With either phone, make sure you disable 3g data.
*Actually both keyboards are very good. The difference is the Twom have clicky plastic keys, and u370 have the noiseless rubbery keys. Both keyboards are top of their class. Each key is firm and it's not easy to accidentally click an adjacent key. Depends on which you prefer.

  • Canon SX1 IS

    http://www.letsgodigital.org/en/20036/canon-powershot-sx1-is/
I'm looking at getting this camera (or one like it) that shoots both video and stills. Because it shoots HD (1080) I'm wondering what kind of harddrive space I'd need in order to download movies from this thing. Also, can HD movies be "downgraded" as I don't have an HD TV at this point and would probably like to burn DVDs.
    Any input is appreciated.

    trojak,
Thanks for the comments. I don't think it will arrive here in the states until April or May so I'll have some time to do a bit more research. The reading I've done of it seems to show it is a superb camera. I'm interested because I want something that will do both video and still photography. Right now I have a Nikon 5400 and an older mini-dv video camera. I've been transferring the mini-dv tapes to DVD but would like to end that practice by just downloading the whole movie digitally into iMovie or iDVD and doing things from there. Seems like it would cut down on the processing time, etc. Any way, I'd love to here more of your likes/dislikes as you come across them with further use. Thanks for you response.

  • Charts: Excel vs. HTML DB

    Looking at material like
    http://pubs.logicalexpressions.com/Pub0009/LPMArticle.asp?ID=390
    and in general http://peltiertech.com/Excel/Charts/
one realizes that Excel's charting feature are light years ahead of anything else out there in the market. The amount of flexibility, real time feedback (previews), customization, etc Excel provides for charting is just unbelievable.
One of HTML DB's strengths is replacing the various Excel spreadsheets floating around around the enterprise by consolidating the information, it has to provide charting functionality that is at least close to what Excel provides. Unfortunately, that is not yet possible.
    Reading http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/application_express/2006_sod.html
what are some of the "Improved charting capabilities, focusing on multi-series charts" specifically?
    Wish list for pie charts:
    1. Specify legend labels next to each slice with/without the associated data point
    2. Fully exploded pie chart or just few slices separated.
    Thanks

    Thanks for responding.
I started off my wishlist in my original post.
But basically, just review the links I posted, see for yourself how Excel does it and take it from there. Excel is the (IMHO) undisputed leader as far as interactive charting is concerned, so you can't go wrong by following Excel's lead.
See, charting involves a lot of configurable options that are highly subjective and personal. People have different likes/dislikes about colors, legend positions, slices, etc, etc.
Ideally, all these should be run-time options that each user can tweak as they want. For example, the 'Show Legend' checkbox is a design-time option, that should be made a run-time option.
I realize that some things would involve a page refresh, but the goal should be to do as many of these tweaks using DHTML/CSS magic. For example
    1. Show/hide legend
    2. Show data labels next to each slice
    3. Show data point value next to each slice
    4. Change chart type (This would definitely need a page refresh!)
    etc
    Thanks

    > with the limitations or extendability of Slide
    Presentation Vs.
    > Timeline Document development using actionscript 2.0
I'm interested in this, too. (Thanks for bringing up the
    topic!) My
guess, however, is that you won't see a flood of feedback.
    The timeline
metaphor is deeply engrained in the Flash developer mindset.
    Building a
slide presentation-based movie (the relatively new "screens
    feature") just
doesn't feel like working in Flash. I don't think many people
    use
screens -- though maybe it's too early to tell. I could be
    completely off
base, of course, and I welcome friendly dissenters.
I think Macromedia was hoping to appeal to the Visual Studio
    crowd with
screens. I'm curious to see how Adobe continues the idea. In
    any case, at
present, there's a kind of ActionScript mini-framework that
    gets added to
screens-based SWFs. This framework is what allows screens to
    behave like
screens rather than timelines. It is important to realize,
    however, that
all SWFs are, in the end, SWFs. The screens metaphor is no
    more "real" than
the timeline metaphor is. Both are just user interfaces to
    translate our
human instructions into something the Flash Player can
    understand.
I don't much care for the fact that this framework adds 27KB
    to a SWF
before anything else is even added. Start a new Slideshow
    Presentation and
immediately test the SWF (Control > Test Movie). In the
    resulting Flash
Player window, select View > Bandwidth Profiler to see how
    much the SWF
weighs. Do the same with a normal Flash document and compare
    the two.
To answer your specific bullet points:
    - Stability
I have no opinion here, I'm afraid. I simply haven't
    produced enough
screens-based SWFs to make a fair assessment.
    - Range
Not sure what you mean, here. Are you asking if
    screens-based SWFs can
    be bigger, hold more content?
    - Limitations
The end result in either case is a SWF, and a SWF is what it
    is.
    - Preference
I prefer the timeline metaphor because I've been using it
    since Flash 3.
I use Flash for everything from applications to cartoons to
    video, so in my
    workflow, timelines makes more sense.
    - Experience
Very little experience with screens (because I don't care
    for them).
Plenty of experience with Flash in general.
    - Pros
I would imagine -- and I can only imagine -- that some
    people prefer the
"slides" format. To me, it feels like PowerPoint, which I
    don't much care
    for.
    - Cons
The aforementioned extra SWF weight. 27KB isn't a deal
    breaker, and
it's certainly less bulky than any of the v2 UI Components,
    but ehh. For
what that's worth, I think it's a con. My programming skills
    have matured
along with the phenomenal advances in ActionScript in recent
    years. I
crossed a milestone back in Flash MX, I think, where Flash's
    under-the-hood
mechanisms really started "clicking" with me. (To be sure,
    the learning
process never ever stops ... I'm *still* learning, and things
    are *still*
clicking for me, but I digress.) To me, the screens metaphor
    introduces a
new (in my opinion, unnecessary) layer of abstraction to a
    lean-but-powerful
environment I already know and love.
    - Accuracy
Not sure what you mean here.
    - Problems
I don't use screens often enough.
    - Errors
    Ditto.
    - Likes
This is reflected in my views on Pros and Cons.
    - Dislikes
    Ditto.
    - Load Balancing
Again, not sure what you mean.
    - Customization
    Good question!
    - Coding Development/Programming
None of the programming books I've read even touch screens.
    - Control
    Control of what?

  • Change Label in Overview

    Hey Guys
I have a problem which I hope is peanuts for you.
I have a xml overview and I want to change its label dynamicly.
I tried to put an function instead of the string at the initialization, put that did'nt worked, so I need to chage it at runtime.
    My code looks like this:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
    <vc:ManagedOverview label="Preferences" allowCallsFrom="[ch.test]"
      xmlns:mx="http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml" type="{Preferable}" types="{[Preferable,Product,Component,Containable,ComponentCategory, ProductCategory]}"
      xmlns:vc="ch.marsdencatering.foodcomposer.viewcontrol.*" searchIndex="4"
      xmlns:cp="ch.marsdencatering.foodcomposer.view.component.*">

      </mx:Script>
    </vc:ManagedOverview>
Is that possible or should I try it on an other way?
    thanks for your help!!!

Your comment wasn't exactly what I was looking for, but it gave me the right hint. :-)
I have to put a function directly to the initiation part of the overview AND end it with a semikolon.

    <vc:ManagedOverview label="{create_label();}" allowCallsFrom="[ch.test]"

  • Forms 6i to 10g Migration Questions

    Hi,
My company is thinking about migrating Forms 6i to 10g. I wonder if you can share some of your experience with us (and with thousands of others who will also face the same daunting task)
    1. How do you like/dislike Forms 10g after the migration?
    2. What are the pitfalls of Forms 10g? What are the strengths?
    3. Other than Oracle Migration tools, is there any other tools that can help us?
    4. How long is the migration process typically taken?
    5. What problems have been encountered in the upgrade process?
    Thank you very much!
    Sincerely,
    John Sun

May I answer your question with some questions of my own? :)
    1. Are you migrating from Forms6i client-server or web?
    2. If Web, to a non-Windows middle tier (hopefully)?
    3. Do you plan to incorporate OID/SSO and/or Portal in the new environment?
I just reached the end of a 6-month long prototyping project to migrate our Forms/Reports 6i application (80% client-server, 20% web) to 10g, using SSO and Portal for report destination. We migrated about a dozen forms of varying complexity and rewrote our main application/menu form. We originally thought the prototype would take 3-4 months. The purpose was to learn what we needed to develop the best migration approach and have an idea of what it would cost. The application has about 650 forms/reports modules. Costs and the learning curve prohibited a move to J2EE/ADF; oh I wished... Management is hoping we can complete the full migration in about a year, but I think... well, this is a public forum and I am using my real name. ;)
We've only been using 10g release 2 since the end of January. Stay away from release 1 at all costs. Even release 2 is not what I would call entirely stable. I just opened a SR on MetaLink a few days ago for a problem I was able to recreate where the use of a button on a form-level toolbar that directly or indirectly call_forms a new form, and then navigation occurs back to the original form (say, when trying to minimize or rearrange widows) causes the session to crash with the infamous ORA-92101. We rely heavily on a hierarchical tree for our application menu, and keyboard navigation on the tree is somewhat broken (tree triggers not firing).
However, many long-standing 6i bugs have been fixed, and I really, REALLY do appreciate being at PL/SQL version 10 in Forms.
But we have some real challenges too, some self-inflicted. Some 400 of our application forms were converted from SQL*Forms 3.0 via Kumaran a while back. This is admittedly our greatest challenge. The V3 forms, being they were character-based with no mouse support, had lots of code in Key-navigation triggers that was never meant to be in navigation triggers (validation, etc) and would get bypassed if the user skipped the field using a mouse. Kumaran solved this problem using mouse triggers which are no longer supported on the web. We also are attempting to introduce some enhancements during the migration like become Section 508 compliant.
I did not opt to use the migration tool; it doesn't really do that much for you anyway.
One headache for us was Reports. We eliminated many temporary tables (permanent tables created temporarily) in user schemas for the use of global temporary tables. Granted, this feature showed up in Oracle9i. But in 10g, we found inadvertently that database sessions for reports are initiated by a java process and reused for performance, meaning different reports sometimes (and unpredictably) are sharing database sessions instead of getting their own. It would've been nice to know this beforehand because it was a challenge to find out the hard way.
My biggest complaint is that Forms still lags behind in features that are part of the application server. For example, I would've loved to implement Enterprise Users and rid our database of the many thousands of user accounts. But Forms doesn't support it. And Oracle really should have provided a migration tool to create the OID resource that links the OID user account via SSO to the database account. Especially since Forms only works with database accounts. All we got was a 9i-based White Paper on the APIs to write our own. This is Oracle data, not application data for heavens sake!
I've opened easily over a hundred SRs during this time, and am quite sure that my name is mud by now and that I have lost any chance of ever getting hired by Oracle. ;)
If your DBAs are database-centric and not used to administering a middle tier-- or administer an old middle-tier like 9iAS 1.0.2.2.2, get them into instructor-led training on 10g administration BEFORE they have to install the 10g infrastructure and middle tiers. The architecture is radically changed and infinitely more complex. As far as the workload the developers will face; Forms is still pretty much Forms, but the state of your existing code will play into it.
I was so tired of spending years on older versions of Oracle software. And I am proud to announce that I am now intimately familiar with what is known as The Bleeding Edge.

  • Bridge Feature Request granted - by Microsoft!

Quite some time back I postulated if Adobe produced a Bridge Reader, [like Acrobat Reader is to Acrobat] it would make many commercial photographer's lives and their client's much easier. And also encourage photographers to use Bridge[and now LR if dealing with just photos] rather than the rivals apps.
To illustrate - A few years back I had to give a client a month's worth of images to sort through [stills from a film]. He didn't own CS or Bridge or any sort of programme that would allow him to view RAW files. He was a producer, he employed people to do techie things, so I ended up having to render a month's worth of RAW files into JPEGs s that he could view them. Very, very time consuming + tedious. BTW This was after getting the Producer to download a trial version of PS Elements to allow him to use the Organiser part and his deciding that using/learning something that complicated [!] was too much effort. So several days rendering JPEGs had to be done. I now shoot RAW + JPEG!
Now, a free Bridge Reader would simply allow a non techie person to easily look at images supported by ACR, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Dreamweaver..etc just like he would in Explorer or Finder. Not only that the client would be able to annotate, easily sort and find images in order to rank images using flags and stars to indicate likes, dislikes etc and then send me a CD/DVD/BlueRay back with rankings I could then read in Bridge. Al you really need to have function wise is - sort, find and annotate, plus this would be a real kller - being able to burn the project to DVD [or multiple DVDs] with a single click.
The major benefit of a Bridge Reader would be that I could do basic corrections in ACR or LR first before sending the prooofs out, as simply looking at the undevolped RAW files is really not the best way for a client to realise how good the image can look if they are only half done.
Well Bridge 2 limps out and no Bridge Lite/Bridge Reader or any sign of something like it. Though a much improved GUI it has to be said. Way better then LR for initial sorting finding images in many ways.
But if you go here http://www.microsoft.com/expression/products/download.aspx?key=reader you can get a Reader to view and to view, label, rate, and comment on distributed Expression Media catalogs [iViewMedia Pro, bought + renamed bt MS]. Looks like Microsoft are doing a surprisingly good job with the Expression line. The web design apps have also had good reviews and Microsoft of all companies may well fill the hole left by Macromedia's disappearence.

    Tom,
If you know how to create File Info custom panels, you can also edit custom metadata using the Bridge metadata panel. To do this, you need to create a File Info custom panel and add to it the "fbname" attribute. Here is an example snippet from a custom panel definition file that uses the fbname attribute.
    static_text(name: "Camera Model");
edit_text(fbname: "Camera Model", locked: true, xmp_namespace:
    'http://ns.adobe.com/tiff/1.0/', xmp_path: "Model");
The value of the "fbname" attribute sets the label that will appear for the property in the metadata panel. The property will appear in a new section of the Metadata panel--the name of this section will match the name of the custom panel as it appears in File Info.
The fbname attribute is only supported by CS2. In CS1, the fbname attribute will be ignored, but the panels will still work as they would without the fbname attribute.
You can find out more about File Info custom panels here: http://www.adobe.com/products/xmp.

  • Loving the translucency in KDE 3.5.8

Did a pacman -Syu last night, and suddenly today, all my KDE windows have this cool translucency thing going on. I never even noticed an option for such behavior before, but this is very cool.
    Anyone else notice/like/dislike?

Well, it is an animation. Unused, idle windows are slightly translucent, and anything clicked on fades into opacity.
Under control center/window behavior/translucency button there seems to be the control for this...I never noticed if this option was available before. It's almost like I'm using beryl, without the 3d...weird...am I the only one?

  • Thinkpad W541 User come in please!

Hi everyone I am considering purchasing a new laptop and I am considering W541 as one of my options. I have few questions however, before I can make a deicision and I will be very thankful if anyone with/without experience with W541 can answer it! Btw i am going to use the laptop primarily under linux + windows for light gaming/office work.
    1) SCREEN. Is the FHD screen REAL matte or it's somehow glossy? I suffer from eye strain/headache from retina/glossy displays or very bright white color. I won't consider any laptop with that kind of screen. Also the FHD seems to be the lowest resolution I can get, do you guys think it is large enough for a person with prescription glass to see? (otherwise T440p seems the only thinkpad left with HD resolution).
    2) CPU/RAM: There are two "low end" option for CPU: i7-4710 MQ and i7-4810 MQ. I know they are pretty similar and I don't need extra 500 mhz. However, from one website, the 4810 seems to support DDR3L 1333/1600 while 4710 only supports DDR3. I am not sure if that's correct because Lenovo let you have 4710 with 1600 MHz ram. Also do you think 2.5 GHz base frequency a huge difference from 2.8 GHz? How about power consumption?
    3) Battery life: I am going to get 9 cell battery if I buy this one. Does anyone have any real-world experience how long it might last with internet/office/pdf work?
    4) RAM replacement: Is there replacement ram out there at 1600 mhz for replacement? I can only find 14900 mhz from crucial. Oh I found 1600 from kingston and 1866 from kingston? Can I even use 1866 for W541?
    5) Fingerprint/color sensor: Pretty cool feature to have. But will those be well supported in Linux, or even in windows? My friend has an old T500 with fingerprint option, and it is hell slow to read/use that function.
    6) microdrive/raid: Will having a raid be beneficial? With ssd?
    7) num pad keyboard: anyone like/dislike it? Does having the num pad make all keys closer and harder to type?
    8) Final thought: pretty dumb but do I need to wait for broadwell quad core or even skylate? It's "almost" Sept .
