Limit a "child" smart collection to only photos found in the "parent" collection set

Sorry if this question has been asked before, but here it is.  I'm starting to organize my pics into Collections, and while some of those collections might be topic/keyword-driven (like a Collection for "spiders" or "flowers"), many of them are for events or "happenings", such as a birthday or Halloween or a trip to Florida.  Within each collection set (which I call the "parent"), I'm making "child" collections that narrow down the photos in the set in increasing levels of perfection.  This is pretty much what Scott Kelby and others evangelize, and I like the idea.  So for instance, I'm working on my child's 3rd birthday party photos, and I really just want the following structure:
Cooper's 3rd birthday [this is a Collection Set]
- All photos [every photo I took, minus the lousy/duplicate ones I deleted after import]
- Picks [the "best" pics - photos I've flagged as a "pick" in Lightroom - which I'm going to upload to Flickr]
What I'm trying to do is simply make "Picks" a Smart Collection that automatically contains any photo in the "Cooper's 3rd birthday" Collection Set that also has a "pick" flag on it.  But it seems there's no way to tell Lightroom to limit a Smart Collection to only the photos in the parent Collection Set.  Or is there?  If I have the "Picks" Smart Collection look for all flagged picks, it searches the whole catalog, not just the "Cooper's 3rd birthday" Collection Set.
(Note:  I don't import into folders on my hard drive for different events, I just import everything into folders by month/year, so I can't use a folder name as a search criteria.)
In this case, I see two immediate solutions, both of which are sort of workarounds, not a universal "clean" solution:
Add an additional criteria to search for "picks" that were also captured on the date of the party
Rename the child collection "All photos" to "Cooper's 3rd birthday: all photos" and then use that text as a search criteria for the smart collection
I know that this is a Scott Kelby setup (making sub-collections that are increasingly specific subsets of other children in the Collection Set) and not an Adobe-designed system, but still, it seems like telling a Smart Collection to limit its scope to the Collection Set in which it resides is an obvious feature.  I'm inclined to think I'm missing something here.
Any thoughts?

I think it's a good idea - consider making a feature request here:

PS - In general, I like the idea of smart collections being treated as fancy lib filters, so their selection along with other folders and/or collections serves to narrow (like it used to be)  instead of broaden (as it does now). Oh well, have a little regress with your progress...

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
I assume you are referring to the screensaver. You can change the photos used by the screensaver in the screensaver settings. Note if you have a large number of photos in the collection you choose for screensaver, not all of them will be used due to the limited storage available to the Apple TV.

There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 9 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
    - What version of iPhoto. Version 8.1.2
    - What version of the Operating System. OSX 10.9.4
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
When I open iPhoto, only the most recent photos are shown (last 12 months)
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages? This has been going on for several weeks now. There are no error messages, but yes, I had an update in the system (QuarkXPress 10.1), and the problem has occurred from that day.
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue. I tried to find out where the problem came from, but found no solution.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto? No
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.
Thank you so much for offering help. I am not a proficient user of the system.

  • A photo found in the iPhoto library that was not imported

Every time I open iPhoto, I receive a message saying "A photo has been found in the iPhoto library that was not imported. Would you like to import it?" If I select yes, a box pops up saying "Unreadable file. The file was not imported, the file was missing." and then the photo's path. If I select no, the photo gets placed in a recovery file. I can see the photo in the recovery file, it is a photo that I locked (and maybe marked hidden - if you can even do both). I've tried to go into my iPhoto and unhide photos so that I can unlock the original...I've also tried unlocking the photo in the recovered file. I've tried deleting the photo in the recovery file as well...I can unlock it in Finder and delete it, but (with my limited knowledge of computers) I've determined that I must only be deleting a copy. Where is the original...I'd like to delete it. I don't even need this pic anymore and it is SERIOUSLY IRRITATING ME every time I open iPhoto. And that's often, as I'm always taking pics of my little one. TIA!!!!! Sara

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Look there for a Folder called 'Import' or 'Importing'.
Drag it to the Desktop. *Make no other changes*.
    Start iPhoto. Does that help?

  • "photos found in the iPhoto library that weren't imported" error message

I just bought my first iMac and was introduced to the dark side of the force (Was always a PC user and have never touched an Apple product). I transferred all my photos from my PC to the iMac Pictures folder. Then I dragged and dropped all the folders one by one into the iPhotos icon in the dock. After all the folders were transferred into the iPhoto library, I removed the original photos by dropping all of them into the Trash and thereby cleaning up my Pictures folder.
When I open up iPhoto this message appears every time, "14 photos have been found in the iPhoto library that were not imported. Would you like to import them?". It doesn't matter if you choose yes or no. It creates a "Recovered Photos" folder within the Pictures folder and there is nothing in it.
I've tried using Disk Utility in Utilities to "Repair Disk Permissions" but this didn't work.
Does anyone out there know what other options I can use?

Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Look there for a Folder called 'Import' or 'Importing'.
Drag it to the Desktop. *Make no other changes*.
    Start iPhoto. Does that help?
If it does then look inside that folder on your desktop. Does it contain anything you want? If not you can trash the folder.

  • HT4759 Only some contacts in the icloud. Set iCloud to default, refreshed, still nothing. Running Windows 7 Ultimate

Both iPad and iPhone have all contacts. iCloud only has like half. Please help

    Sometimes this trick will work:
Go to Settings>Mail,Contacts,Calendars>Default Account (in the Contects section), set this to iCloud.
Go to Settings>iCloud, turn Contacts to Off, choose Delete from My iPhone when prompted.
Download the app My Contacts Backup.  Use this to backup the remaining contacts on your phone (from the other groups) as a vCard attachment to an email that you send to yourself.
Go to Settings>Mail,Contacts,Calendars and turn off contacts syncing with these other services.
Go to Settings>iCloud and turn Contacts back to On to sync back your iCloud contacts to your phone.
Open the My Contacts Backup email and tap the attachment to import the contacts from the other groups back to your phone.  They should be added to the iCloud group, and as a result, will sync to iCloud.
You can then decide whether or not to continue to sync contacts with the other accounts to your phone.  If you do, you'll see duplicates unless you open contacts, tap groups, tap these other accounts until they are unchecked, then tap Done.  They will still be on your phone, but will be hidden from view.

  • Why set child group 100% width didn't full fill the parent group?

    hey,bro.
the black rect i set the explicit size the same as the parent group.
and the white border rect i set the width and height 100%,however,as the snapshot shows, the white rect's right and bottom line didn't reach the side.
can u tell me what's wrong with that? should i set some properties of that white rect.except set the explicit size directly.

    gufw > gnome-python > libgnomeui > libbonoboui > libgnome > gvfs
    etherape > libgnomeui > libbonoboui > libgnome > gvfs
On the front page of archlinux.org you can do a package search and get this as a result: http://www.archlinux.org/packages/community/i686/gufw/
Then follow the dependencies. You can also see dependencies with pacman -Qi gufw.
For gvfs, it is a virtual filesystem. It doesn't use diskspace, only a tiny part of RAM, like sysfs/tmpfs/procfs.
    Here is more info: http://library.gnome.org/devel/gio/stable/ch01.html
The two apps above use gnome libraries, which require gvfs for their filechooser so they can access all the mounted filesystems easier (easier for the app authors).

  • "PHOTOS FOUND IN THE iPHOTO LIBRARY THAT WERE NOT IMPORTED"

Ever since I imported some videos from a memory stick about 2 weeks ago, my iPhoto opens with the above message and then says that I need to save some photos that were not imported, and then precedes to create an empty folder of 'RECOVERED PHOTOS" with increasing sequential numbers and then stores it on the hard drive.
There is also a little message which pops down from the top when I go to close i-photo and am not sure what it says as it is too quick and I have never had this problem previously and now it is getting annoying!
Has anyone any idea how to make it stop doing this??? The 3 videos that I uploaded in iPhoto originally had to be converted to movies/ quick player however they only appeared as photos in first frame in i-photo and dont appear anywhere in my iMovie catalogue -please help if you can!
    Thank you!

TERENCE DEVLIN - YOU ROCK!! Yes - I did what you suggested step by step and the import folder contained 3 files - Originals, Modified and another one. There were lots of the files with nothing in them and then the videos that I was speaking about repeated about 5 - 6 times in separate folders and different formats - bizarre - or maybe not really if I knew how the import mechanism of the software worked - but thankfully for me - I have your advice and it worked!!
The little message on closing about critical something or other blah, blah, is still there on closing and I don't remember it previously, but maybe it was always there.
All I know is there are no more questions about recovered folders and storing them on my C or whatever drive it is and my little films are intact. I will post another separate message about i-movie recognising these films, which I think they should at a later date.
As a first time brand new mac user (Christmas present Jan 10 - and very proud of it too!) I am amazed at the support available, Genius Bar (although I live in London and it is booked out a week in advance at anytime after office (me) work hours!) I am however also very grateful for the forum as I have never used a forum before and I can see why you deserve your *** rating as Apple support were slightly helpful when I called, but they are so busy and my lovely boyfriend (a long term mac user) told me to get online and ask the techy oracles - so thank you ever so much TD!!

  • How do limit a smart collection to another collection

I have a collection - I have rated them & flagged them. I want to make a smart collection so I only see the flagged and rated photos. I have tried to use the collection as the source for a smart collection but this does not select the photos. Instead I have to use the folder as the source - what am I doing wrong?
    Cheers
    Stephen

    Hi 99jon,
This does not work for me. I have the smart collection set to show all that match (i.e. And) . If the collection on its own does not select any adding more conditions will not - I have tried.
I am coming over from Aperture - I think maybe I need to change my paradigms as use the filter and save as a present. I am just bothered that the smart collections don't seem to work on ordinary collections for me...
    Cheers

  • When developing an image from a smart collection "has no adjustments" it gets immediately deselected

I am wondering if this could really be the intended LR behaviour?
I start from a smart collection, one of the criteria is "has no adjustments".
Ok, as soon as I move the first slider in develop module, it no longer matches that criterion.
But that should be no reason for LR to force me to immediately stop the develop edits on the selected image.
It immediately unselects, and I stay in Develop module with a grey window and the message "no image selected". (It does not move on to the next image, which still matches the criterion.)
I would expect that when I return to Library module, it would return to the same smart collection where I started, but I would not find my last developed images there, as they no longer match the criterion.
But that LR grabs it immediately out of my develop selection?
Strange enough it stays the same, when I first explicitely selected all images while in Library/smart collection.
My expectation would be that I  have this selection fixed to work on in Develop module. Similar to when I select any images from survey view and go to Develop module.
But no, the only workaround I found is:
Start from the smart collection, ctrl a to select all, then arbitrarily click on another collection withput this criterion - selection stays fixed - then move over to Develop module.
    This is LR4.1 on Win7.
Definitely my functional specification would be: never take off an image from Develop unless the user moves on to another image.
So ignore from where an image was picked.
Would you consider this a bug? Or a "feature"?
Do you see the same in LR4.2 or 4.3RC? Behaviour on a Mac?
    Cornelia

There is a feature request that has been around for a long time to be able to "lock" the contents of a smart collection so you can work on the photos in it, before "releasing" it for recomputed contents.
My workaround is to copy from smart collection to dumb (I encountered this so often that I created a 1-keystroke plugin mini-feature to help). Before that I actually used a private keyword whose presence was enough to hold a photo in a smart collection (set the keyword to work on photos, clear the keyword to release them). Then as long as you add that keyword as criteria to every smart collection you may edit in, and add the keyword to every photo in the collection that you may work on... - yuck.

  • Smart Collection default templates

In my Lightroom presets folder I see a folder named Smart Collection Templates
    http://www.pbase.com/hdproman/image/101633642
These five templates do not show up in Lightroom
I have created a Smart Collection Set and all the Smart Collections to show photos taken during a particular year and the Recently Modified by Floyd smart collection.
    http://www.pbase.com/hdproman/image/101726162
A search of my hard drive reveals my custom presets such as develop, export, slideshow, etc: except the smart collection presets created by me.
If I open one of the default presets such as the Recently Modified template in a text editor such as Word Pad this is what is inside.
    http://www.pbase.com/hdproman/image/101749582
Its interesting that touch time is not on my list of criteria.
    http://www.pbase.com/hdproman/image/101749851
Maybe the whole problem here is I am using a PC and maybe these default smart collections are for Mac only.
My smart collection Recently Modified by Floyd looks like this.
    http://www.pbase.com/hdproman/image/101749852
This is a question that I have not found any answers; luckily it is not really all that important. I just like to solve computer mysteries.
What do you know that I am missing?

John, creating a new catalogue shows the five default smart collections. I should mention my working catalogue was converted from Lightroom version 1. This must be why I never saw the default smart collections as Lightroom version 1 did not have smart collections.
When I right click the import dialog takes me to the Smart Collection Templates folder and I see the five default smart collections. Each template has the extension .lrtemplate and the File of type: shows Supported Files [*.lrsmcol] as the import file type. If I import any of these files I get an error. If I export any smart collections created by me it gets this *.lrsmcol extension and I am able to import this template into any Lightroom catalogue.
I now understand how to create my own smart collections and having the defaults does not matter. My original question was how to create the Recently Modifiedsmart collection which the NAPP help desk answered for me.
Anyway this topic is taking too much of my time and further research is wasted effort.
    Thanks for your reply

  • Saving Smart Collections

    Hello all,
I've recently upgraded from CS4 to CS6, when I uninstalled my cs4 package I realsed I'd just lost all my smart collections in Bridge. However a colleuge of mine has these same smart collections set up in his Bridge CS6, so I was wondering if theres any way of exporting or saving the samrt collections so I can import them to my bridge? Or any saved preference cache that I can copy?
It'll take a couple of hours to set up all the collections so any advice would be appreciated.
    Cheers.

Collections are just a bunch of address to your photos.  So no, you can not transfer them.  Now smart collections are a little better, but they are still just address locations for the photos, and not the photos themselves.
You can go into the location of your CS4 and copy the collection and paste into CS6 and see if it works.  That location is C:\Users\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Bridge CS4.  Note that appdata is a hidden file.

  • Smart Collection showing incorrect contents

    Hi,
    Another oddity with custom metadata
I have several Smart Collections set up, filtering on custom metadata. I'm having a problem with one in particular which, after updating an unrelated field, shows the wrong contents.
It filters on two string fields and an enumerated field:
    - string Reference contains "0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 ..."
    - string Status doesn't contain "Copy"
    - enum Licence is "Unset", where "Unset" is defined as "nil".
On loading Lightroom, this shows what it should. However, I also have a function called from a menu which updates a *different* enumerated field, setting it's value to one of nil, '0' or '1'. After running this function, this smart collection shows the same contents as another Smart Collection - coincidentally the next one in the list. The second filter is:
    - enum Sync is "Yes"
    - enum Sync is not "Unknown"
    - string Status doesn't contain "Copy".
The additional "is not unknown" is needed because the first line returns images for both "Yes" and "Unknown" - data values "1" and nil respectively.
Looks to me as though there's a problem with smart filters and enumerated fields with nil values. Restarting Lightroom restores the contents of the first collection to what they should be.
    Cheers,
    Jim

I don't have the option of "title dosn't contain words", my option is "Title" and "doesnt contain", i.e. without the word "words". There is an option "contains words" but not "doesn't contain words".
I have the same smart collection that works well. My parameters are like this:
You could also use lower case letters in the third field.
You don't need the first two lines. They constrain the smart Collection to a certain folder and image files that are not JPG.
PS. Oh, I see. You put "words" in the third field? That doesn't work. Then all images with titles that doesn't contain the word "words" will be displayed - probably all.

  • Update to 5.6 - No photos found in some directories

I use Windows 7 and recently updated to lightroom 5.6.  Prior to this my lightroom was working perfectly.
Now that I have upgraded I am missing about 70% of the photos in my catalogue.  When I go to import them again there is a message saying "No photos found" where the thumbnails should be.
Sometimes the missing photos are in subdirectories where all the other directories are showing their photos.  (eg photo's from a trip - each day has it's own subdirectory and some days are not showing photos.  The subdirectory is showing, but I get the message "No photo found" where the thumbnails should be.  Other directories are showing all their photos).
Sometimes lightroom will show some of the photos in the directory (or subdirectory) but not all.
It does not matter if they are in CR2 or jpeg format
it does not matter if there are .xmp files with them or not
I have uninstalled and reinstalled lightroom twice.  I seem to have the problem with the same photos /directories,/subdirectories.
I have restored all my presets (Edit -> preferences -> presets)
I do not have any filters on
All the photo files DO EXIST. I  can see them in other programs (eg photoshop and windows explorer).
In one attempt I have created a new directory and copied half of the files into it.  They will then show up when doing an import, but the other half will not.  When I move more across the ones in the new directory will not show up but the ones in the old directory will show up.  If I try to isolate a file that is causing the problem doing this I cannot.  All files show up at some point.  At one point I even had all the photos showing up in two separate directories but that was only temporarily.  In short - I am sure it is nothing to do with an individual file or directory.
I have posted the problem on here (twice) but nobody has been able to help
I cannot figure out how to speak to anyone at Adobe who may be able to help so I post again here in the hope that someone may be able to help.
The only thing that I can think of is that I store all my photos on a NAS (A remote server) which is remote from the PC I am working on.  It speaks to the NAS via Wi-Fi on the same network.  It is stable and pretty quick but I can only think that somewhere lightroom is not coping where every other program is when talking to the NAS.
Any ideas please on how to fix my problem or on how to actually get in contact with an adobe person to help.  As I said, everything was working fine before I "upgraded" to 5.6.
    Thank you

As an update to this I had the idea of loading a trial version of Lightroom onto my Home Theatre PC which is directly attached to the NAS via a thunderbolt cable.  I then attempted an import and ALL the photos showed up in all the directories (At least I am pretty sure they are all there)  So it looks like something to do with using lightroom referring to a NAS over Wi Fi.  Does anyone have any idea why this would be a problem given that every other program I use has no problem at all using my current set up.
Attaching the NAS directly to the PC I am using lightroom on is not an option.

I can delete photos Shot with the iPad but not otheter photos (synchronized). If I tap the synchronized Photo there is no button to delete, only for copy and send.
My Space has Gröne, what to do?

Only photos taken with the iPad, copied onto it via the camera connection kit, or saved from emails/websites etc can be deleted directly on the iPad. Photos that were synced from your computer are deleted by moving/removing/de-selecting them from where they were synced from on your computer and then re-syncing
