Limit Airport Express to Wireless G

Is there any way to limit an N enabled AX to only attempt a Wireless G connection? I have a 2.4GHz wireless N (D-Link DIR-655) network but my AX seems to be much happier running G. I am perfectly OK with it running G but I would like the network to run N & G. I should mention that I am only using it for AirTunes and have it set to join my existing network.

Sorry, I am confused. 54Mbps or slightly less is "g", regardless of what it is called or labeled.
I understand, but here is my dilemma, in order to keep my MBP from constantly renegotiating an N transfer rate, I have to dictate the link speed so that streaming video is not jerky. Now, my MBP has no issues with the dictated speed being high but the AX doesn't like it. If I set the router to G-Only the AX connects properly at 54Mbps but then I am stuck with G speed on my N capable MBP. However, the dictated speed applies only to N devices and G devices run fine at 54Mbps. So if I could force the AX to only attempt a G connection, it would connect (and stay connected) fine, my MBP would connect great at higher N speeds, and everyone would be happy.

Also noticed that some users report that their "n" AirPort Express devices are connecting at "g" level speeds when the device is configured to "join" a non-Apple "n" wireless network. That may be a possibility there as well.
There could be something to that as well as I noticed that when I have my MBP and AX in the same general area the router will show the laptop having a much stronger signal than the AX.

  • Can't find Airport Express via wireless or wired connection.

I've run across this topic in this forum and a lot of others and nothing I've found has helped resolve the issue. It seems like the one definitive answer I found was to return it to the store, but I'm hoping to avoid that so I figured I'd try once more.
Running Windows XP and using a linksys Wireless-G network card. When I first got the Airport Express I was able to connect to it but then I had some issues with my cable network connection and had to reset everything. Since then I haven't been able to connect to it, and currently I can't find it using the Base Station. Tried resetting it to factory defaults about 10x and I'm still stuck on blinking yellow. I tried connecting it directly with a network cable and even then my computer can't seem to find it.
I tried turning off my firewall, reinstalling the Airport Utility, connecting to the IP address 10.0.1.1 using the "Configure Other..." box and no luck.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks much.

The issue is within the network configuration of the Airport Express. As you mentioned, all hardwired devices can use AirPlay but all wireless devices can't.
Normally, the Airport Express will wirelessly join your existing network, and Airplay will work with all devices. Any reason why you have your Airport Express connected to your router via ethernet?

  • HT4587 My airport express and wireless airplay speaker are connected to wife, but airplay and homesharing are not working...what to do?

My airport express and wireless airplay speaker are connected to WIFI, but airplay and homesharing are not working...what to do?  Everything was working fine until about two weeks ago, all of the sudden airplay has disappeared from the iphone, itunes on the laptop, and the apple remote for iphone.  I have restarted the router many times, re-setup the airplay speaker and the airport express and booth are showing as being properly connected to the router when I log into the router IP address.  I was on the phone with Apple support for 30 minutes they blames verizon, got on the phone with verizon and they stated the settings were all correct and compatible with apple, got back on the phone with apple and they again are blaming verizon and trying to get me to get an airport extreme because that would fix the problem...any suggestions, please!

There are three Airport resets, soft, hard and factory default.  It would probably be beneficial if you tried each one in sequence.  Actually, you could jump to the factory default reset if you don't mind reconfiguring from scratch.

  • IMacG5 (non-Intel) - Pandora via Airport Express to wireless speakers?

Is it possible to use access to Pandora to pump music through Airport Express to wireless speakers?

    Hi roquinman,
    Hows it going?
I think your may be looking for a program like airfoil. It will let you send any audio from your computer to an airport express. http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/audio/airfoil.html

  • Airport Express over wireless N

I have 3 Airport Expresses connect wireless just to play music, if I set my AP (Linksys WRT320N with DD-WRT firmware) in wirelss mode "G" or "NG mixed" they work OK but I've had some problems with interference so I really want to use them in N mode at 5GHz to prevent loss of connection. With either N at 2,4 GHz or N at 5GHz the Airports cannot be detected by the utility anymore and the light starts flashing amber.
My MacBook connects just fine over N at both 2,4GHz and 5GHz so the AP is working. Anyone suggestions how to fix this?

Thanks for the warm welcome! Disappointing to hear the promise of a wireless N connection cannot be held by Apple, at least not for my purpose... :-S
I bought an N capable router especially for the Airports...
Maybe there's a little hope... I think I had them working for a little while before I flashed the router with the new firmware (I flashed it because it stopped working...) Not sure though, I did have 2 AP's
Well, it's probably long shot but here we go: Anyone out there with some really really good news and instructions to make this work?

  • Airport express joins wireless (green flash on) but airplay doesn't work? Why oh Why?

Airport express joins wireless (green flash on) but airplay doesn't work? I have turn off the firewall on the router, but still I cannot connct wireless to the airport express.

Please check out the following Apple Support article to see what the minimum requirements are for AirPlay to work.
Also the following Apple Support article talks about the specifics on how to use an AirPort Express Base Station for AirPlay.

  • Airport Express connects wirelessly but Macbook doesn't??

Hello, hope someone can help with this, here’s our set-up:
UK BT broadband – Belkin Router – Belkin Powerline Adapter – Airport Extreme
The Airport Extreme is set up as a bridge with the Belkin Router managing DHCP.
In a room separate to the Airport Extreme and router I have an Airport Express that will happily connect to the network, all looks good on Airport Utility on my Macbook (10.8.3) when viewed wirelessly. However, the strange things is that my Mackbook (MacBook5,1 2008), in the same room as the Airport Express, does not receive a valid IP address whereas the Airport Express does. So I can only connect to the internet by physically connecting (ethernet cable) to Airport Express.  This has been an issue for several months now, occasionally I can connect to the internet wirelessly but this seems randomly intermittent and most of the time it does not work. I have tried periodically rebooting everything working from the Belkin router, but this also rarely makes any difference. The Airport Extreme and Express have no problem connecting to the network every time, and they receive a valid IP address from the Belkin router.
How is it possible that the Airport Express can connect wirelessly but the Macbook in the same room can not, do they have very different wifi adapters?

  • I have a Westell 6100G modem.  I want to set up Airport Express for wireless.  Can someone tell me how to do it step by step.  I'm using an HP with Windows Vista.  I'm a tech idiot.

Just got Airport Express to save on GBs of data.  I have already a Westell 6100G which is for use as Internet Broadband, via Verizon.  How do I set up the Airport Express with this Westell.  Do I even still need the Westell, or do I need to also buy a wireless router?  I'm a tech idiot and this is driving me nuts.

The Westell 6100G is a combination modem and router or gateway device. The AirPort Express is a wireless router.
Since the Express does not have a built-in modem, you will still need your Westell gateway in order to access the Internet.
Which exact model of AirPort Express do you have. It will be written (in very hard to read type on a label on one of the AirPort's sides). It should look something like: A1392. It may also state a Order#. In that case it would look something like: MC414LL/A
Regardless of which model you have, the basic network configuration would be that you would connect an Ethernet cable between the Westell's Ethernet port and the WAN (circle of dots) port on the Express. (Note: If you have an earlier model of the Express, you would connect the cable to the only Ethernet port on the Express.)
The good news is that you will not have to make any configuration changes to the Westell. We should be able to use it as configured.
What we are going to start with is getting a basic Wi-Fi network that should provide your computer with wireless access to the Internet. Once verified as working, we can fine-tune this network to include wireless security and any other goals that you may have.
    Ready to start?
I would recommend that you do the following as a minimum:
    Power-down the Westell and computer(s).
While all of the devices are powered-down, perform a "factory default" reset on the AirPort Express base station. This will get it back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration and make setting it up much easier, especially if you use the "Assist me" process within the AirPort Utility. (ref: Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule)
Once the reset has completed, remove the AirPort Express from power.
Connect an Ethernet cable between the Westell and the AirPort Express.
Power-up the Westell; wait at least 10-15 minutes to allow it adequate time to initialize.
Power-up the AirPort base station; wait at least 5-10 minutes. Note: The AirPort's status light may continue to flash amber after it has intialized. That is because, there may be some additional configuration items necessary, like setting up wireless security, before the overall setup is completed to get a green status.
    Power-up your computer(s).
In this basic configuration, the AirPort base station will broadcast an unsecured wireless network with a Network Name (SSID) of Apple Network NNNNNN. Network clients, connected to the base station either by wire or wireless, should now be able to access the Internet through the ISP's modem. Once Internet connectivity has been verified, you can use the AirPort Utility to configure the base station for wireless security and any other desired options. Please post back your results.

  • Connect to Airport Express and Wireless Router (Linksys) at the same time?

I have a laptop that connects to a Linksys wireless G (WRT54G) router. I just got an Airport Express to play iTunes wirelessly over my stereo. Is there a way to connect to both the Linksys router and the Airport at the same time - i.e., connect to the internet as I was over the wireless router AND send music wirelessly from my laptop to my stereo using the Airport Express at the same time?

  • Airport Express as wireless repeater

Hi all, just wondering if anyone could give me a hand. I have just bought an Airport Express (not arrived just yet) not just for streaming music, but for extending my network. I am a student and have just moved into my new house. The internet here already is fine, the people here before me have given me the password to the encryption but not to the account or the router. This will all change in September, however. The router is a Netgear DG834PN. My iMac is having difficulty connecting to the network, I think this is due to the distance it is away from the router, as when I connect the iMac upstairs (nearer to it) it connects fine, hence the desire for a wireless repeater. Will I be able to use the Airport Express as a repeater? If not, what must I do? Must I get an Apple wireless router as well? Will a time capsule be fine? Please remember I cannot access the DG834PN's graphical interface at all.
    Thanks in advance,
    Jake

You will need to run an ethernet cable from the netgear to your airport express. then setup the airpor express as an access point. As you don't have access to the WebUI of the router then you wont be able to setup the airport express as a WDS or wireless repeater.
The other option would be to connect a timecapsule to the router via ethernet. Setup the time capsule as a bridge to the router. Then you would be able to extend the wireless network with an airport express.

  • Airport Express as Wireless Adapter

Can the Airport Express be used as a wireless adapter (ie connect my xbox to the AE via ethernet jack which in turn connects wirelessly to my base station/time capsule)? I'm looking to get a wireless adapter for my xbox but if the AE can act as one I'm sold since I can also take advantage of the AirTunes feature. I'm just not sure if the ethernet jack on the AE is strictly for connecting to modem/router.

If the wireless network is created by an AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) or another AirPort Express (AX) the answer is YES.
The Ethernet port on the AX is active ONLY when the AX uses WDS to wirelessly join a network. You can easily create a WDS network between any combination of AEBS and AX.
Very, very, very few non-Apple devices are compatible with Apple's WDS therefore using the AX in this way with other devices probably won't work.

  • Using Airport Express as Wireless Repeater upstairs?

    Greetings,
I have a recent Netgear WNDR4000 WIFI router situated in my home "network closet" downstairs. I'm noticing that sometimes I loose connection upstairs and even though it is probably not the greatest placement to keep the router in this box, that is what I have to work with. (All ethernet connections end up in thies area neatly)
This particular router has a repeating feature you can use with other products so essentially am I correct in understanding that if I place the airport express upstairs and plug it into ethernet 9Tied into the WNDR4000), it will then repeat the 2.4 and 5Ghz signals it is already sending?
    //Cheers

Most likely not for two reasons: 1) Most non-Apple routers are NOT WDS-compatible so there is no guarentee that the AirPort Express can extend the wireless range of the Netgear via a wireless connection, and 2) Although the AirPort Express supports both 2.4 & 5 GHz radio bands, it can only operate on one or the other ... so, even if it could extend the Netgear, it would only extend one of the Netgear's radios.

  • Using Airport express as wireless reciver is this possible?

I have a power mac g4 and it does not have a wireless card. I have a wireless network in the house and i was wondering if it was possible to use the airport express to connect to the wireless network and give my g4 intent access.
    Thanks Mark

Yes, if the wireless network is an Apple one or a WDS capable router that is compatible with Apple's WDS.
The other option is to install a PCI card.

  • Airport Express Join Wireless Network Disables Ethernet

I have one of the the older Airport Express (firmware 6.3) and I'm trying to use it to connect a non-wireless machine to an existing network.
Act as a single Wi-Fi interface to any computer or almost any other devices such as game consoles that has an Ethernet port but doesn't itself have built-in Wi-Fi
If I choose "join a wireless network" it appears to disable the ethenet port. Any ideas what I might be doing wrong.
    My Setup
ADSL Modem ------ Time Capsule ---[wireless-g]--- Airport Express ---[ethernet]---Computer

Unfortunately, the Ethernet port is disabled when you configure the older AirPort Express version that you have to "join a wireless network"
It can be enabled in the newer 802.11n version, which uses firmware 7.x.x.  Sorry, not possible up update the Express that you have since hardware changes were made in the 802.11n model.

  • Airport Express as wireless internet router

I have a Mac G4 and a Windows PC, and connect to the Internet via DSL. I would use an Airport Express module as the modem for the incoming DSL signal, and connect the Airport Express by ethernet to the Windows PC. How do I receive the Airport signal at the Mac G4 -- the G4 has no internal wireless capability. I have a Hawking wireless adaptor (usb) that is badly recognized by the G4. What wireless receiving device is acceptable? Another Airport Express module?

Hello JimBee. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
I would use an Airport Express module as the modem for the incoming DSL signal, and connect the Airport Express by ethernet to the Windows PC.
I'm a bit confused about your statement above. The AirPort Express Base Station (AX) does not have a built-in DSL modem. Is your DSL modem actually a combination modem/router? What is its make/model number?
