Limit iPhone IMAP connections to server?

Is there any way to limit the number of active IMAP connections per account or per server? My webhost has a server-side process limit in place, and each imapd process counts against it, so having both my iPhone and my MBP checking email adds up quickly.

I also note that while use of the IDLE Command may mitigate this problem, the server must capable:

As far as HostGator, the problem seems to be as much with their specs, as with Mail?

Btw, I connect with my IMAP accounts either with three computers, or two computers and my iPad. I guess my providers are not using Courier servers?

  • Playbook unable to create an IMAP connection to server

I’m running my own (OSX Lion) server.  It's working with other clients (including the Playbook browser via webmail interface) however the playbook Messages app refuses to establish an IMAP connection.
It returns the error ‘Your Information for IMAP server (domain name) has changed or is incorrect.  Please check your account settings’.
Interestingly the Playbook and server are both set to use SSL but the server log returns an error that the playbook is trying to connect using an unsupported authentication method ‘Method=PLAIN’.  (If I change the server settings to allow PLAIN authentication, the playbook error changes to ‘your imap server was unreachable’).
Anyone have any ideas?  Does the playbook really use plain authentication, even when set to use SSL?
This problem is forcing me to continually go back to using my iphone for email.

Check all the ports and configure same in playbook

Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
Or this - Delete the account in Mail and then set it up again. Settings->Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Accounts   Tap on the Account, then on the red button that says Remove Account.

  • How can I get my new iphone to connect to server when I am at home?

My new iphone (5) cannot connect to server when I am at home.  Nothing is available if it requires a server connection-the "wheel" continuously spins.  When I am out of my residential range connections are made and phone seems to operate better.  How can the home server connection be corrected?

reset network settings, As well as power cycle router.

Just got the 5s, trying to set up email.  I am trying to get 2 outlook accounts going, I have double checked everything on the troubleshooting guides.  after deleting the accounts again and making sure all login info was correct I get the message that it cant connect to server.  The message reads "Cannot Get Mail: the connection to the server failed."  I am guessing its outlooks server and I dont know what to do.  I cannot recieve or send emails.

  • How to limit max IMAP connections in mail.app?

    Hi folks,
due to Mailserver configuration limitations from Provider side like courier-imap settings "maxperip" = 4, some (like me) may have problems to use or connect more than one imap-account to the same server in mail.app.
In thunderbird you have the option to configure the max open connections per imap-account. If set to 1 connection, i'm able to use 4 imap-accounts.
But how to configure this in mail.app???
    Thanks in advance,
    paranoja

oh, as i found this seems to be an unfixed an verry old problem.

It's really a shame that apple didn't fixed it since the problem is from 2007!!!
It seems that there was a key "CacheOveraggressively" in com.apple.mail.plist in earlier versions, but i can't find it there with Version 3.5 (930.3)!
Seems that the only real solution for now is to use thunderbird......
P.S.: Mail in IPodTouch has of course the same Problem!

  • Iphone cannot connect to server during restore process?

I am trying to restore my iphone 4s (bought off a friend but reset to original settings) from an old iphone 3g back up. I've been following this process:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2109
and got up to step 4, but after I enter my icloud details (which are correct, I've triple checked!) and accepted the terms and conditions, the phone cant get passed this step as it "cannot connect to the server"? I currently have it attached to my mac book and there is full wifi.
    help!

    That message can be for a varitey of things, not limited to but including;
Failure to connect between the carrier's activation server and the Apple activation server.
Failure to connect between the Apple activation server and your internet source.
Failure to connect between the internet source (cable) and the WiFi router.
Failure to connect between the WiFi router and the device itself.
You choice is to either troubleshoot or wait it out.

  • IPhone cannot connect to server: I have one iPhone that has just been updated to 5.1.1 that now cannot receive email, other devices that have been updated continue to work!

We run a SBS 2003 Exhange box, however since an over-the-air update this particular handset has refused to recieve mail from Exchange (apparently Yahoo had issues too).
Authentication is fine, it will happily recognise the account if it is deleted and set up - once the user tries to recieve mail however it will annonce that the connection to the server failed.
We have several other devices on the same iOS version and others below which are working fine!
Mobile access is enabled along with all expected services with no errors being flagged in the event manager for this user - I'm not wondering what might be the cause! Something in his mail box that iOS 5.1.1 doesn't like?!
Short of a backup/restore of the device I'm can't see anything to help...

It would worth your asking in the Final Cut Pro X forum - someone else may have experienced the same problem.
I assume you have already trashed Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.dotmac... (several files beginning with this) and (same path) com.apple.idisk - though I suspect the problem lies rather with the individual programs which are trying to access something on the non-existent iDisk.

  • IPhone not connected to server for find my iPhone option on the cloud?

I have my new iPhone verified by the AT&T store twice and now the message is Unable to conncet to server when I press accept terms and conditions to set up the iCloud to activate Find my iPhone option. What should I do?

What email provider are you using? If you know your password to the email the easiest and quickest way to get that mail working again is to delete it and then re-add it
    Hope this helps.

  • Why does iPad say connection to server failed when I am at home and have wi-fi, Why does iPad say connection to server failed when I am at home and have wi-fi

Why does iPad and 4s iPhone say connection to server failed.  I have been getting mail until this started popping up going to beat with sledgehammer

Hi -I was having the above problems on both my ipad and iphone,  and I trawled the internet for hours and hours trying to find a solution to this.....tried  resetting both devices, signing back in to the mail app, and did a full reset of both iphone and ipad., I removed the email account from both devices too.. I knew that the problem occurred after receiving an email- as it happened whilst opening the email- you might not have realised that's what it was at the time?.... I tried deleting the email from both phone and ipad, and hotmail was working fine on a webpage,it was JUST the mail app that was giving the  error messages..... I was receiving the above message and ' cannot send mail- an error occurred while sending this message'  and ' cannot get mail- the connection to the server has failed' then I suddenly realised that even though I had deleted the mail from both ipad and iphone the message was still in trash, so I emptied trash and made sure the mail was completely removed from my hotmail account ANYWHERE and then the problem disappeared.....I think an email I received was maybe corrupt- I hope this at least helps someone and saves you the hassle it caused me!
    Good luck!!

You're probably running into the servers simply being swamped. Thousands of people are all going for the software update at the same time. Give it a try again and if that doesn't work, then try plugging it into your computer and trying it that way.
I didn't get a notion of the size, it doesn't seem to be as big as the 700 meg 5.0 update, but it did take me 20+ minutes to download via cable internet so it's a large file. That in and of itself takes a while.
If you're trying to download it directly to your iPhone, you'll need to be on wifi since I'm sure it's well over the 20 meg file size limit for 3G.

  • IPhone 5 won't let me set up yahoo mail it just says cannot connect to server

When you set it up, under settings, Add Account but don't select "yahoo!" select "Other" instead and then set it up...
    Incoming Server - imap.mail.yahoo.com
    Outgoing Server - smtp.mail.yahoo.com
Incoming Port - 993 (requires SSL)
    Outgoing Port - 465 (requires SSL/TLS)

  • MacBook Pro, iPad IV and iPhone 4S Cannot Connect to Server

I have a MacBook Pro running Mountain Lion 10.8.5, and an iPad IV, both less than three months old. I also have a pair of iPhone 4s's.
All of a sudden none of them can reliably connect to our AT&T Wireless home internet. There are particular websites we are blocked from viewing, notably any apple website, including apple.com, apple support, itunes, and App store, but also random ones like Wikipedia and others. We constantly get the "cannot connect to server" message. Yet other websites load right up with no problem.
Many  websites are seriously snarled up, particularly Ebay, which is a critical one for me to have quick access to. Ebay screens are scrambled and out of order, act like purchases are being made when they're not, and photos don't show. All we get is little blue questionmarks.
Multiple  PCs running on our home network work just fine, and we can get into any website with them. But ANY apple product is just stymied. We can turn off wifi on the phones, and get into websites with 3g, but as soon as the wife is turned back on, we're back to square one.
Nothing has changed on our network recently, although we did get a new router about three months ago after having consistent outages. I have noticed our wifi getting glitchier and slower as time goes by,  but again, it affects the Apple products, until it just went totally haywire last week.
My husband gets wifi at work just fine, and I am accessing wifi quickly and accurately on the MBP at this very moment on a museum network.
The issue seems to be the AT&T home network, and very specifically with the full line of Apple products.
Any clean and easy suggestions? I don't want to have to jump through hoops on four different products, and I now suspect it's something to do with AT&T?

    Pleeeeeeease. Somebody? Anybody?
I can't get into Facebook, or Ebay on my MacBook. Life is too short to weep and lose hair over computers. Surely there's a quick fix I just haven't thought of?

  • TS1398 my kids disabled my ipad and I had to wait 15mins to log in, from then on I have had difficulty connecting to wifi, but can, but then I can't connect to server.  I have reset network settings etc.  It also did the same thing to my iphone at same ti

My iPad got disabled and once I waited the 15 minutes I logged in, but from then on I could not connect to server dispite having 2-3 bars of wifi signal.  The same thing happened to my iphone5 at the same time although this had not been touched by my 3yr olds.  My wifi is very intermittent and often it goes from 3g to GPRS on my iphone. I have reset network settings, turned devices off by home button and off button, removed sim card in phone, etc. I'm stuck.

  • "unable to connect to server" on my iPhone?

I'm having trouble getting my iPhone to connect to the iCloud server to receive mail etc.  I've tried several times and I keep getting a message that says "unable to connect to server". Any ideas how I might fix this?  Thx...

    Hello, bills47.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
I would first start with forcing the Mail App to close then attempt to access your account again.
iOS: Force an app to close

If the issue persists, the easiest way to troubleshoot this issue would be to delete the account and add it back to the iOS device.  Below, I have included two e-mail troubleshooting articles.  The first article covers basic email troubleshooting.  The second article will assist you if the email account you are experiencing issues with is a Gmail account.
