Limitation on functionality on Nokia Lumias

What is true on these limitations?
101 reasons not to buy a Nokia Lumia
I wanted to buy a new Lumia, but if these limitations are true I wont buy it and I will tell everone about these lomitations. So please answer!
regards
andy

Most of these limitations listed are indeed true.
Not all though, like not being able to set MP3 ringtones (You can using Zune) or that the wifi sleeps when the screen goes off (=true) so that downloads are broken off (= not true, as the wifi is then kept alive untill the download finishes), music player staying on lock screen (can be turned off in settings).
Also some of these limitations are also applicable to various Symbian models itself. (Need to buy 3rd party app to block calls, was free in older Symbian phones. And also on Symbian MMS requires data, it just has the option to automatically swithch it on.).
But that is not the point I want to make.
The point is more, that if you take iPhone, you can easily make a similar list.
And even Android doesn't have all the features that Symbian had.
And last, I can also make a long list of Windows Phone features, that Symbian doesn't have.
So it all depends what you expect from a phone.
Also since Symbian is end-of-life, there are in essence 3 options (or 4 if you count that Canadian company) left. If you want full tweakability Android may be more of your liking, but rest asure that also has its issues.

  • Nokia Lumia Black update broke volume key function...

Since I updated my Lumia 1020 to Nokia Lumia Black, the volume keys stop working while the phone is playing music from time to time.
It doesn't happen right after selecting the song or album, but after a while I try to + or - the volume and I see the volume indication on top of the screen going up or down, but the volume remains the same. If I stop the music and select another song it works again. So it has to do with continuous playing.
I have seen this issue reported in several other posts here and other websites, please tell me you are working on this. I can't believe my Lumia 1020, a VERY expensive phone and Nokia's flagship cannot change music volume with its dedicated keys.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Apparently after a soft reset the issue is no longer present.
I will keep trying it anyway since I have read that other people could not fix it with a soft reset.

  • Nokia Lumia 925 Windows phone keeps shutting down

I have had a problem for the past 2 months, my Nokia Lumia 925 with Win 8.1 keeps shutting down spontaneously. (I did not have this problem before 8.1)  This is my third phone in the last 2 months (warranty program keeps sending me replacements) and it shut down for the first time this morning. All 3 have developed the same problem, the phone will shut down spontaneously and the only way to start it up again is a soft reset (Volume down + Power for 15 seconds). I have had a total of 10-15 shutdowns between the 3 phones and this is a conservative estimate.
I am thinking that this has to be a setting or an app that I use (and few others do) that is causing the shutdown since I have only seen a few other similar issues in the forums. Here are some of the basic facts about my situation and some of the actions I have taken:
                  - I have wiped the phones repeatedly (3 phones wiped a total of 3 or 4 times not including the initial setup of the replacement phones, which is getting really old--really fast).
                   - I have tried turning off NFC, but that obviously  wasn't the issue because NFC was off this morning when it shut off.
                    - I have tried trimming the screen protector/screen guard I installed as suggested in one of the other forums even though that seemed ridiculous (I think that was a different model phone too, but I gave it a shot)
I have not noticed any common occurrence such as
--when a certain app is running
                               --when it is on/off charger,
-- When the battery is full or low (it was 24% this morning).
-I have 2 chargers, 3 if you include the car charger that I have never had to use due to great battery life.
                   - I have called tech support several times, all AT&T can tell me is that this is not a known issue and I should wipe it again. Nokia says the same and that I should send it back to them for repairs. That seems fruitless to me because I have had 3 different phones, what are they going to repair that a new phone won't fix?
It takes me 3 hours to reinstall and set up my apps, I am getting very frustrated. I really love the way this phone functions, the software is good, the screen is brilliant and very sensitive, the camera is great (although a bit slow), and the size and feel are perfect for me...I hope that someone here on the forums can help.
Thanks for your help in advance...
    Al

    Hello, mariaadamsky.
We appreciate you reaching out to our community regarding your concern. You are using a Lumia 925 as well, correct? Did something happen to your phone that possibly caused such behavior? Did you try doing fixes on it?
Latest software released for Lumia phones is the Lumia Cyan. To confirm that you have it installed on your phone, go to Settings> extras+info. You can also try going to Settings> phone update> check for updates to check if there's an available update. Are your system apps also updated? While connected to WiFi, go to Store> ...> downloads to check for pending updates. Let's hope that the phone will not shut down while doing this process.
By the way, we can try other fixes that could help us identify the real cause of the issue. In case you wish to have it repaired in a Nokia Care Point, warranty claim may vary per region and Nokia does not have an international warranty. Also, creating a backup is a must to avoid data loss. Where did you buy the phone and where are you located right now? To know about the manufacturer's limited warranty, go here: http://nds1.nokia.com/files/support/global/phones/guides/Nokia_Manufacturers_Limited_Warranty_with_W....
We look forward to your reply.

  • Nokia Lumia 1520: was just sold a prototype model,...

Hi everyone, subject explains it all. I bought the phone off someone in a local classified, now deleted of course, only to come home and find out that it is in fact a prototype. They showed me it worked and everything with a sim card in it, but it's my understanding that this phone still will be limited in functionality and potentially not able to update or eventually work at all?
So my big question is, what am I supposed to do? I understand this phone is considered stolen property, so am I supposed to turn it in to Nokia? And I'm afraid I'm in for some bad news here, but are they able to work with me on this for replacing it with a legitimate model, or perhaps crediting me towards a purchase of an official one? I'd hate for this to simply turn into a situation where I end up having to return it to Nokia for nothing. That way, the seller gets a couple hundred bucks, Nokia gets their phone back, and I ended up paying for nothing. Thanks everyone.

    @paulheu :
Yeah, I thought someone from regulars / moderators would've written that sooner or later.
I dunno whether you're affiliated with Nokia anyhow but the fact is that the company should take better care of their manufacturing process and only deal with the people/companies they can trust.
Nokia Communicators (might have been the first smart phone ever introduced) were manufactured in Finland. Have you heard any prototype material of Communicators being sold on Ebay???
When Nokia closed its factory in Salo, Finland, first Lumia phones were manufactured in South Korea (might have been the same manufacturing plant where Samsung and/or LG Windows Phones were manufactured). For example my Lumia 710 is manufactured in South Korea. Have you heard any prototype material of Korean Lumias being sold on Ebay???
Nowadays the majority of mobile phone manufacturers have moved their production to Chinese manufacturing plants (subcontractors?) because of the cheaper manufacturing costs. So did Nokia: my Lumia 625, 928, Icon and my wife's 1020 have all been manufactured in China. And now there are prototype items sold on Ebay and illegal copies (inferior Android version) of Lumia 1020 sold in China. The perception/understanding of legal matters is not necessarily so strong/well informed in China like it's in other countries. Maybe this Chinese Ebay seller didn't even know he was selling illegal stuff??? iPhone is also manufactured in China but as far as I know (I'm not an "iBeliever" and never will), there hasn't been any illegal iPhone stuff (displays etc.) on Ebay.
If we'd consider the legitimacy of my purchase, I didn't know I was about to purchase an illegal item when I made the purchasement. So when I received the item and opened the package I found out that it's a prototype item. The seller is in China so I had the following alternatives:
    1) the seller will ship me an original legal version of Lumia 1020 display package (well I don't think the guy would've even had those legal versions) or
    2) return the item to the seller (ship it back from Finland to China, doesn't sound worthy at all) or
    3) report it to Finnish police (the seller is in China so what are there possibilities to do anything about it) or
    4) report it to Ebay. They'd probably close down the account of that Chinese guy or do nothing at all (example: take a look at those BAD ESN phones sold on Ebay. Some of them are stolen but they're still sold over there). EDIT: if Ebay would've closed down seller's account, he probably would've created another one and restarted his business, or
To summarise the whole thing: these two things (the guy with his Lumia 1520 and the current display of my wife's Lumia 1020) would've never happened if the manufacturer would've only dealt with the people/companies they'd be able to trust to.

  • Nokia Lumia 800 - sync calendar entries

Did anyone notice that Windows Live will only sync calendar entries within the last “2 weeks” to your lumia?  It seems that Windows Live has limited the synchronization through their server.  This has caused a lot of inconvenience as past calendar entries are also important.

Yes, I have noticed this - the more responses that users find this unsatisfactory the better and, hopefully, Microsoft/Nokia will address the problem.
There are many times when I need to refer to past items in my calendar, and a 15 day cut-off is unacceptable; I often go back 12 months! I also don't carry a laptop around with me, so logging in to my Windows Live or Google calendar is not an option - that was the reason for purchasing a smartphone.
The Nokia Lumia 800 phone has performed well for me in all other functions but this really does need to be fixed. Come on guys, listen to your users.
I am one of the people that this really DOES BOTHER!!

  • Download different file types on nokia lumia 920

    Hi,
I recently got myself a nokia lumia 920.. Great phone i must say, however i find this phone is more limiting than the iPhone, or a cheap black berry curve
Firstly, you cannot download anything from the internet that is not compatible with the phone, for example, .exe, .zip, .dll etc etc. This is the most annoying thing for me, as i constantly need to download software, drivers and tools to copy later to my computer. The other night i urgently needed internet access on my PC, and wanted to tether using my phone, NO USB tether support - HOW LAME!. anyways, i got myself a wireless card for my PC, but did not have the drivers for it... And could not download the drivers using my Lumia. So i managed to get the micro sim working in my old blackberry 9300 curve, and successfully downloaded my wifi drivers. So not being able to download anything either than apps and pictures on this lumia makes it a huge fail, what is the use of having so much storage and high broadband speed on this phone?
    Next is the bluetooth,
I hate it! cannot define what services to connect over bluetooth... for example:
I have a bluetooth enabled radio in my car, and connect my Lumia to it. Works great for phone calls, however if you lock/unlock the phone, type a message or use the phone in anyway, it cuts whatever is playing on my radio and changes it to bluetooth audio mode... Now with my previous phones, blackberry, samsung etc. i could set the bluetooth service to only work as handsfree, and not stream all my phone's audio through to bluetooth. With the nokia Lumia, there is no options when it comes to bluetooth, either on or off - LAME
    And then the magnetic charger....
Does not work, charged the phone until full, next morning the phone is off - dead flat (6hours after fully charged)
I exchanged the charger twice already, and sent the phone in for repairs, this problem is still not resolved. So i have been using my old blackberry charger to charge the lumia - lasts +- 1.5 days now with constant usage.
The nokia lumia has all the basic smart phone stuff - GPS navigation, exchange email supp, sync drive(skydrive etc), USB connectivity and storage, and internet tether - but the limiting options for downloading and bluetooth make this phone less of a smart phone than my blackberry curve. This phone is just pretty, and should only be used by people who want something fancy and limited, or developers that need to test apps on windows mobile 8.

Did you check the detailed Info of the Application ? Does it mention the functionality which you think is missing ?

  • My Nokia Lumia 1520 has a plethora of issues

This is mainly about my Nokia Lumia 1520, but also some other Nokia Lumia phones.
After I inherited my Nokia Lumia 1520 I had to wait a few weeks before I could install Windows Phone 8.1 (Blue) + Nokia Lumia Cyan on it, after doing so I signed in with my Microsoft-account (as it was of a deceased family member before, and I was using his Microsoft-account, so I had to factory reset it), after resetting it I noticed a plethora of issues that weren't present in Windows Phone 8, no offence to anyone at Microsoft, but Windows Phone 8 had absolutely 0 bugs I ever experienced, no crashes, no oddities, ever since the new operating system was released all my phones as well as my ex-girlfriend's and my girlfriend's phones have been experiencing issues, but none more than my Nokia Lumia 1520, here is a summation of each phone. Note that I am a huge Windows Phone fanboy, so I have purchased several devices for multiple people, and I'll write what they've told me down here too. Note that most are either Nokia Lumia or Microsoft Lumia, but one is by the Cantonese manufacturer, Huawei so I don't know if that will be considered (ir)relevant by the moderators.
    Nokia Lumia 1520:
    * Sometimes the touch-screen randomly doesn't respond (which is really annoying while playing Age of Empires: Castle Siege where I lost the chance to get several British banners due to this error), this recovers sometimes by going stand-by, but this alternates and seems completely random when the screen gets responsive again, and when not.
    * It randomly starts pressing physical buttons, and when I try to press them it's not recognized by the phone, and there is no way to turn my phone off or even put it in stand-by while it's doing this.
    * There is no back-up for settings and app data, it did this before but for some reason it does notify me that I haven't backed up in a while and any attempt to back it up is met with countless of errors, before my phone backs up my data again I don't want to factory reset it because I don't want important data to get lost, so please help me fix this.
    * It sometimes starts crashing random applications with provocation.
    * Sometimes it won't charge.
    * It crashes randomly while playing videos on Google YouTube and other websites.
    * It can't download Lumia Help + Tips.
    * Sometimes the screen goes all black, and the camera stops to work, but here is the odd part, whenever I click on the back-button and hold it it shows me the ''open'' applications, but they all remain black.
    * Half of the time when I take pictures with it there is a 3 second delay, and most of the time those pictures aren't saved, so I only use it to take screenshots, and maybe 1 in every 10 screenshot is actually saved.
    * It won't show the profile pictures of my Microsoft Skype-contacts.
    * The calendar doesn't work on the lock-screen, and shows me the wrong information all the time.'
    * Cortana randomly starts in the middle of other things.
    * Internet Explorer Mobile randomly crashes and closes the tab I'm on at that moment.
    * Internet Explorer Mobile randomly opens tabs I didn't ask for.
    Nokia Lumia 920:
    * The phone sometimes won't restart after going completely off unless one would hard reset it.
    * There is no back-up for settings and app data, it did this before but for some reason it does notify me that I haven't backed up in a while and any attempt to back it up is met with countless of errors, before my phone backs up my data again I don't want to factory reset it because I don't want important data to get lost, so please help me fix this. (note for my Nokia Lumia 920 this happened after I returned from Hanoi, the issue has been constant on my Nokia Lumia 1520 even while it was in Europe)
    * Microsoft Skype crashes when I want to upload a picture or drawing (unique to this specific phone, it works seamless on all the other devices).
    * Microsoft Cortana often notifies me about news, but can't fetch anything when I click on the message in the Action Centre.
    * It can't download Lumia Help + Tips.
    * On some (Vietnamese) Wi-Fi connections it can't update nor download several applications regardless of size (for example an Angry Birds game called Angry Birds Go! that is nearly 1 G.B. nor an 8 M.B. N.O.R.A.D. Santa Tracker).
    * When there is a flippable protective case around it the cellular network will crash, and can only be restored after rebooting it, before I got S.I.M. errors on it nearly 5 times a day, each time it required me to restart my phone.
    * It permanently shows 2 unread mails in Microsoft Outlook and 8 in Google Mail for no reason, I have 0 mails in Yahoo! Mail but it does tell me that I have ''unread'' ones in several (NON-EXISTING) folders.
    * The Calendar doesn't appear on the lock-screen, and if it does it's either several weeks too late, or shows me messages for months about things that happened last year.
    * Sometimes one ear-plug goes without sound, rather than being a hardware problem it gets fixed by rebooting the phone.
    * Sometimes I can't copy or paste anything.
    * Internet Explorer Mobile often doesn't recognize images I want to save, while somehow it does recognize those same images either the day before and/or the next time.
    Nokia Lumia 520:
    * The phone sometimes won't restart after going completely off unless one would hard reset it.
    * It doesn't recognize the Micro-S.D. card it did before (it worked while on Lumia Cyan).
    * It can't download Lumia Help + Tips.
    * It sometimes won't charge.
    Nokia Lumia 530 Dual S.I.M.:
    * After inserting a Micro-S.D. card it can't download in-app videos (Microsoft Skype) or voice messages (WhatsApp-Messenger) or even links (Facebook Messenger).
    * It can't download Lumia Help + Tips.
    * Sometimes it doesn't recognize the 2nd S.I.M. Card.
    * Like before, the Calendar doesn't function on the lock-screen.
    Microsoft Lumia 353:
    * Touch related issues similar to the Nokia Lumia 1520 as expressed above.
    Huawei Ascend W1:
    * The phone will detect low storage even when there is lots of free space.
Unrelated to these phones, but still ''Nokia'' hardware is the Nokia charger that comes with Nokia Lumia phones for some reason doesn't work, I mean like ever, and Microsoft forces me to buy new chargers, plus I still use the charger I had on my old H.T.C. Windows Phone for my Nokia Lumia 920. All the above phones have many more issues, but I just simply can't remember them right now.

Confirm that Date / Time settings are correct.

  • I have put my iphone simcard into a nokia lumia 520, now I have no contacts etc. How can I retreive them?

Hi. I have been having problems with my iphone 4s ios 6.?? heating up alot, draining the battery fast. It goes down to about 20% before half the day is over. I still have 4GB left (from a 64GB iphone) and don't have anything functioning, (other than check my emails occasionally and txt). It is also having problems deleting emails. I push edit, then touch the dot next to the emails so I can select which ones to delete, but then the dots all disappear and the editing function goes away. It just goes back to inbox. So I have got a Nokia Lumia phone to try out until I can try and fix those problems. But I have put the sim in it, and now I have no contacts, notes or photos or anything. I backed up my iphone to my itunes on my laptop last night, because I was told to try and do and backup and restore on my iphone 4s, that maybe that would solve the problem. I can't see how it would stop it heating up. So I backed it up, but didn't restore it as I didn't want to wipe everything off my iphone, and it said I had to update to ios 7 in order to restore it. I have read alot of bad stuff about putting ios 7 on iphone 4s, so I don't want to update it. Is there a way I can go to the backup somewhere on my laptop to find all that information? As I had contacts and notes stored on my iphone that I didn't have written down anywhere else, which I need. Now I don't have them. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

what I meant about "dont have anything functioning", I didnt mean the phone isn't working. I meant that I have the phone on standby all day. Just use it to check my emails, & fb messenger, thats about it, yet it still drains the battery. I do sync/backup everything to my itunes, most recently was last night. Can I not retreive it somehow so it can be put on the nokia phone? Or so I can at least see the contacts, notes, photos etc on my laptop (wherever the backup data is)? Then just copy it onto the nokia phone? I have also noticed that even going into my facebook messages, it doesnt have the photos that were sent and received whilst I was using my iphone. I thought at least fb would keep them.
From what I mostly read about updating it, alot of the apps dont properly function with the ios 7, as it is made for the iphone 5. People have written that it slows their phones down alot, and the phones can take minutes to dial a call. I prefer not to take that risk and stuff my phone up. At least at the moment its just overheating, the battery is dying fast, and its not deleting emails sometimes. Hope this is of some help.

  • Nokia Lumia 810 (T-Mobile) Experiencing Freezes Li...

I got a new Nokia Lumia 810 almost a month ago, and I seem to be experiencing the same sort of freezes as the 820 and 920 owners. The first freeze occurred almost immediately after setup, the second the next day, and since then the freezes vary between once a week randomly to several times within a half hour pretty much if I want it to, meaning I can virtually prompt freezes by browsing the web and/or pulling up the keyboard. This morning, for instance, I got it to freeze about once every two to three minutes at will (note, however, I can only seem to do this in the morning, for whatever reason).
I've updated my 810 to the latest firmware, uninstalled everything that can be uninstalled, removed all but my Microsoft Account, disabled Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, NFC, and location services, performed hard resets, used no memory cards, disabled "Find My Phone", etcetera, etcetera, to no real avail. Returning or exchanging my 810 is not an option because I didn't buy it from an official channel, and from what I gathered from the seller this particular unit is a new exchange (it came factory-sealed), so there's already precedent for that not guaranteeing a fix.
I'm not really mad about this, nor does this cause me to want to switch to another platform or anything like that (the grass is always greener, and my phone last round was an Android phone, so I know exactly how "green" it is). There is no "or else" for me so long as my 810 is otherwise functional (and it is), and I don't want to have to leave the WP platform again, so I sincerely hope there is a fix or at least an official acknowledgment coming soon.

Just to update this thread, about a month ago I sent my 810 to Nokia to repair. Nokia apparently reflashed the firmware, and after determining all was good, sent it back to me in about a week. Great turnaround, by the way.
Unfortunately, about a day after I got my phone back, it started freezing again. On the up side, it froze much less frequently than before (nowhere near once every few minutes), but after another freeze in the morning resulting in the alarm clock not going off, I figured I had enough dealing with this excellent but wholly unreliable phone. I was preparing to put it on eBay "as-is" and eating the loss before I stumbled on a forum thread... somewhere... suggesting that at least some of the freezing might be due to the Nokia charger. With a few other users in that thread reporting similar findings, and having nothing to lose myself, I plugged my phone into my computer to charge that night just to see if there was any truth to their findings.
Now, I'm not claiming any conclusions here, but after two weeks of charging the 810 via anything other than the Nokia charger it came with, i.e. a Samsung charger, a car charger, my computer, etc., I have so far experienced zero freezes. I don't know how. I don't know why. This could all be a huge coincidence, and my phone could freeze within the next few minutes just to punk me. It doesn't even make sense to me, since the freezing occurred both on and off the Nokia charger. But for now... no freezes!

  • Nokia Lumia 920 email : how to do search on all em...

    Hello all,
This is  a feature i miss from my previous iphone 4.
I have multiple email accounts linked together (hotmail, 2 google accounts) on my lumia 920 email client app. I have set all email accounts to sync emails from past one month. However when i do a search for a particular keyword (eg: barbecue) , which might be present on one or all of the email accounts, probably on or before the one month time window, the email client can search only on the hotmail server and not on the google servers.
This was a feature i enjoyed with the iphone, in that it can search on all servers (linked) for the keyword I' looking for. Am I missing some setting ? or is it a limitation of the windows phone 8 email client ? or is it a limitation for nokia lumia's implementation of the windows phone 8 email client ?
Hope someone can help me out.
    Thanks and Regards,

  • Nokia Lumia 1520 not finding Bluetooth headsets

    Hello
I have a nokia Lumia 1520 and it won't connect to the two bluetooth headsets I have. They are not even showing up to connect to.
I tried with a Microsoft Xbox 360 Wireless Headset (bluetooth version 3.0) and a Sony MBH10 (bluetooth version 1.2). Can you give me a list of compatible bluetooth headsets and/or what version of bluetooth I need for it to be to work with my lumia 1520? My phone is updated with the latest updates and I also tried to connect via bluetooth to my other phone a Nokia E6 and it did connect succesfully.

The devices you are trying to connect to the phone have to be in the bluetooth pairing mode before the phone will see them in bluetooth.
Read up on how to put the headsets in pairing mode.  Should be in the literature that came with them.

  • Nokia Lumia 1520 Issue

Hi , I had issues with my new nokia lumia 1520 and the issues are as follows: 1)Touch and display problem and screen flickering and doesnt let me use any app on the phone and even if im trying to unlock my phone, it inputs its own password and locks the phone again. 2)Apps not functions as if i click one app another app opens 3)Phone hangs 4)Phone gets heated up rapidly with usage of camera 5)Music volume control issue as with full volume, the phone is still not loud enough at times 6)Paint behind the phone is pealing off and Customer care people (Marathalli Nokia Care) took the phone and finally says that my screen guard is causing all these issue. whereas i was using this phone for 1.5 month without issues untill i updated it to latest firmware 1028.3562.1402.0001. please provide your views as to what can be done next as this phone is just 1.5month old and I have spent a lot on this phone?

Remove the screen guard and take it back to Nokia Care, so they will not have a stupid excuse to refuse repair.
