Limited access for printer sharing

I am currently sharing access to my printer so that my roommate can print from it without having to get up and plug it in to the usb port each time, and have been successful in trying to do so with one problem: I live in a dorm and therefore another hundred students are also able to see the shared printer and print to it.
Is there a way to limit the printer sharing to specific IP addresses or something similar to that?
Thanks!

In Print & Fax > sharing prefs, you should be able to restrict by username. Does that work?

  • Is it possible to be connected with a 3G modem for internet access and a WiFi router for printer sharing at the same time?

For our only internet access we have a 3G wireless modem. I have since purchased a WiFi printer and router to connect all the comptuters to in the house. The PCs have no problem with using both the 3G connection and the WiFi signal at the same time to print, however, the MacBook Pro will not connect to the 3G network and the router, it will drop the internet access from the modem and attempt to connect via WiFi (which has no internet access). Is there a solution that is available to remedy this? I attempted to create an adhoc printer network, however, the macbooks again will not print off of this, only the PCs. And I'm getting a bit frustrated overall with this.

The 3G wireless modem is on one of the PC's correct?
Why don't you pass the Internet through the Ethernet port to the router via Cat5 cable, then have that transmit a Wifi signal that everything else can use, then connect the printer to the router for print sharing?
You would have to turn off the wifi on the comptuer with the 3G modem as it's physically connected to the router and can't connect to the other machines as they are all connected to the router for sharing.
The Mac has the ability to pass, Internet Sharing in the System Preferences.
Do you have software for the Mac to run the 3G modem?

  • Why would a user have limited access to file sharing

I just upgraded to Mavericks and server 3. But now users can't log in. I look at the "access to server" option for the user and it shows this (see screen capture included here )
I tested all this out on a testing server, but not with these specific accounts. This is simply an upgrade from 10.8.5 to Mavericks.
Running a MacMini server. 2.6 GHz i7 processor. 16GB ram.
    Your help is appreciated.

Thank you for the idea. given our time constraints we've decided to head back to 10.8.5 and deal with things later, possibly much later. Though I had failed to remember Maverick's switch to preferring SMB. Though one would think that type of thing is covered in the upgrade automatically.
In the end, the sharing thing did work itself out, but the users couldn't log in and when I went to change a password for a user, the button to accept the password change would do nothing, it'd just sit there with the new password typed into the two boxes and the button was useless. Since you have to click out of that box to do anything else I had to force quick server.app and that's when I decided it was too buggy to mess with and I'd just go back to what I know and almost trust.

  • How to set limited access for web.

I currently have a 10.5 server hosting 5 different websites, and now one site wants to convert to a "login in required" to access the website, is there a quick way for me to configure this through the site itself with a list of users Open Directory and realms or do I have to do some fancy unix commands that I am not very good at.
Any help or advice would be appreciated.
    Thank you.

Have you ever used Server Admin?
Right in the GUI for your sites is a tab for Realms.
Create a Realm. Give it a name and a directory (the path you want to protect) and click the + button below the Users list. From here you can select any user and/or group from your directory.
    That's it.

  • Limited access for configuration assistant

    Hello,
Is there a way to allow a non-admin rights into the configuration assistant, so that they can only make certain changes.
An example would be:  Someone from a communications department wants to make changes to the auto attendant message.
    Thank you for any help.
    Jim

    Hi Jim,
I would encourage you to use Office Manager 2 for that, it has limited functionality compared to CCA and is best suited for making the ad-hoc adds/moves/changes and is simple for a lay person to use.
    Give it a shot
    Cheers,

  • Airport Express Security - Limiting Access for Kids

I have an Airport Extreme network. Would like to let my kids use a laptop for homework, but don't want them to be able to access internet without asking first. Is there a way to set up security so that laptop cannot access wireless network unless password is entered EACH time? THX

James, Welcome to the discussion area!
On your Mac, configure the OS X Network preferences so that AirPort is disabled.
Give your kids a non-admin OS X user account.
If they need to access the Internet, they will need to find you so that you can modify the Network preference pane to enable AirPort. After they are done, you will need to disable AirPort before their next use.

  • File & Printer Sharing with  Windows Vista

    Hi All,
I work in a small office, I'm the only mac user & I supply my own Macbook 10.5.6.
We have just had a new Samsung printer installed in the office which all PC's have been enabled for printer sharing, but I cant seem to get my Mac to pick up the Shared printer. I'm also trying to set up a folder on the main PC that I can send files to from my mac. The shared folder has been created on Windows Vista - but I'm unable to see that shared folder in finder. Could these 2 issues be related? please can someone help me make my work days just a little bit easier
    Thanks so much

I would like to add that I DO NOT want to share my laptop at all. It is my personal computer & if I can set up file sharing from my mac to the main PC on vista while still blocking any access to my computer.
I am currently following this procedure - http://www.ifelix.net/tech/3022.html

  • Block access to printing part or take printer off Mac's list of nearby printers

Our office manager recently purchased a LaserJet printer and has requested that we use that printer instead of the OfficeJet printer when we wish to print something.  Because of this, I want to make the OfficeJet unavailable for printing from any device that is not physically connected to the printer.  (I don't care if anyone can still print to it by wiring a computer to the printer.)  However, we intend to use the OfficeJet as a scanner, copier, and fax machine.
As I indicated in the subject line, I would be OK with simply knowing how to configure a Mac to stop listing the OfficeJet as a printer.

Hello moonman239, I hope you are well
I saw your post about wanting to remove the Officejet from being available for printing however, keep the OJ available for scanning, copying and faxing.
I have a suggestion that might work for you, if not, please post this concern on the Apple Support Community
    Click on System Preferences
    Print and Fax
    Sharing Preferences
Under "Users" beside "can print", change that option to "No Access"
If that removes the scanning abilities, try check marking the "Scanner Sharing" and remove the check mark for "Printer sharing" on the left column

  • OS X Server 10.3: Can't enable printer sharing

We are trying to share a printer connected to a OS X Server, but there is no entry for "Printer Sharing" under System preferences > Sharing.
I thought perhaps it was because the printer service wasn't started. When I go to server admin and select print service and click starts ervice, nothing happens and nothing is entered in the log. Other services (e.g. FTP) start and stop fine.
    Thanks,
    -e

I refer to 10.4 here but may be just as applicable to 10.3... Much of the vanilla OSX setups are still available in Server but Apple have just chosen not to make them available. You can access the vanilla settings by 'fooling' the server (on startup) into thinking it is juat a plain OSX System. I have done this successfully for USB printer sharing...
    cd /System/Library/CoreServices
    sudo mv ServerVersion.plist oldServerVersion.plist
Restart and you will be presented with the 'std' OS X login screen. USB printer sharing is now available. Configure this as required and then reinstate the oldServerVersion.plist and restart to return to server.
The shared usb printer will continue to function.
Needless to say, this is a bit of a 'hack' and I do not know if there are any side-effects. However, I have used it successfully myself and it runs fine even in conjunction with the server printer sharing.

    Hi Chamath,
I assume your XP machine is 32bit (most are)? Here are a couple guides that may help:

    and
    http://goo.gl/4Eun
Also, here is a Microsoft Article to ensure that you have Windows 7 setup properly for printer sharing (article is for Vista, but works just as well for 7):

  • Unable to Turn Printer Sharing Off

I'm adding a new printer to my setup and the printer includes a software RIP. The printer itself is connected and works fine, but when attempting to use the add-on software RIP, the RIP won't start up, giving the error message that printer sharing is on and it must be turned off to allow the RIP. But in fact all sharing is turned off.
I went to the RIP user forum and discovered others with similar problems and the solution provided by the software tech support is as follow:
"If Printer Sharing is turned off in your System Preferences, but you are still getting this error message with ColorBurst, it means that some process is using the 515 port (which is a port used for Printer Sharing and is the port ColorBurst uses for communication). You can go through the following steps for troubleshooting...
To confirm that the 515/Printer Sharing port is actually being used:
    1) Open the Network Utility application (Applications > Utilities folder) and click on the Port Scan tab
    2) Type in localhost for the IP address
    3) Check the "Only test ports between" box, and enter 0 and 999, then click the Scan button
    4) You should see 515 listed as an Open TCP/IP Port
To see which process is using the 515 port:
    1) Open the Terminal application (Applications > Utilities folder)
    2) Type in the following command: sudo lsof -i4:515 then press Return.
    3) You'll be prompted to enter your Administrator password. Do so, then press Return
    4) Look for what is listed under the COMMAND field. This is the process that is using port 515.
With the Tiger OS (10.4), most likely the process listed will be launchd. This is a program called an "umbrella daemon" that includes several very important system processes (including one called xinetd, which has to do with printer sharing). Basically when the Printer Sharing checkbox gets "out of sync" like this, it's an indication of bigger problems with the OS. The only permanent solution that I know of is to back up your system and perform a new "clean" installation of the OS."
The results of that test provided this response in the Terminal:
"...COMMAND PID USER FD TYPE DEVICE SIZE/OFF NODE NAME
    launchd 1 root 10u IPv4 0x0427ae8c 0t0 TCP *:printer (LISTEN)"
    I have 2 questions:
    1. Is there anything else I can do to solve this other than a clean install?
    2. If there is no other solution, what's the shortest route to a clean install to get me back to my current version (10.4.8)? [this second question is why I'm posting in this forum]
Thanks for your patience with this longish post.
    G5 2Gdp   Mac OS X (10.4.8)
    G5 2Gdp   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

Hold down the alt/opt key and right-click on the Finder icon in the Dock.  Select 'Relaunch' from the pop-up menu.  Does this solve your problem?  If not, click the Apple icon on the left of the menu bar and select 'Force Quit'.  If you see a program running that you know is the culprit or that you don't recognise then highlight it and click the 'Force Quit' button.  If all else fails hold down the power button for 6 seconds or more.

  • Lenovo Thinkvantage Access Connections prevents Microsoft File and Printer Sharing

We have several Think pad laptops deployed in our company, including G41, T61, and T500 models.  We are using Numara's Track It software to inventory our workstations and laptops.  The auditing process needs to have Microsoft File and Printer Sharing turned on in order to work.  We have enabled a group policy to set this to on by default.  However, the Thinkavntage Access connections manager for the LAN connection overrides the GP and turns off the File and Printer Sharing by default.  What's worse, with it off, we can't remotely manage the machine's services or even access the registry.  We know that his is the issue, because reconfiguring the access connections manager to allow the file and printer sharing will allow all of our remote administration tools to work, insluding the inventory audit.
Does anyone know how to disable the access connection manager from running remotely?  or does anyone know how to change the settings remotely to all for the microsoft file and printer sharing to be enabled by default.  I would hate to have to visit each user individually just to turn off a setting.
anyone else run into headaches because of this "security feature"?

    1.Find snetcfg.exe on internet
2.Create batch who runs snetcfg with this commnads from network locations
(this setting enable  File and Printer Sharing)
    snetcfg -u MS_Server
    snetcfg -c s -i MS_Server

  • X301 "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" removed at re booting (XP SP-3)

Even if I run the “Network Identification Wizard” (under System properties/Computer Name) to join a Workgroup, the box ‘File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks’ remains unchecked.  If I ticked it manually, it remains checked for the current session, but it is unchecked at booting.
The same occurs with the Windows Firewall (I am running that from Symantec). I switch the Windows Firewall off, but after rebooting, it appears selected again!.
This happens only with my brand new ThinkPad X301, which came with Vista. The package included a kit to convert to XP, but this installed a ‘naked’ XP, which required downloading from Lenovo and Windows about 1Gb of files (bad service, Lenovo guys!).
I wonder which “safety” issue of the X301 causes this, but how can I stop this happening? (It does not occur with any of my two old ThinkPads, also running XP SP-3 and Lenovo software).
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

See -> http://www.vistax64.com/vista-networking-sharing/72537-file-printer-sharing-turned-off-reboot.html  Here is the text. Re: File and Printer sharing turned off on reboot
    I FOUND MY SOLUTION!!!
In my case, it was in Lenovo's "ThinkVantage Access Connections" applet. It
is additional security that is applied at the CONNECTION level.
Here is how I fixed it:
    1. Double click on the ThinkVantage Access Connections applet in the
    notification area.
    2. Click on the MANAGE button on the toolbar
    3. Select the SSID where you want File Sharing to work, and click EDIT
    4. Click on the ADDITIONAL SETTINGS tab
    5. Next to "Network Security", click the SETTINGS button
    6. The first option in Security Settings is "Disable file and printer
sharing". UNCHECK this box. Click OK for 3 levels of dialog boxes, then
    close Access Connections
Although these directions are specific to ThinkPad notebooks, the same
principle may apply for other manufacturers' connection managers.
    Best of luck!

  • File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks is missing

I have a Server 2012 Hyper-V VM that is missing the File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks. When I try to Install the service it is not listed. The only service listed is Windows Network Virtualization Filter driver. I have the install media but

Ok, fixed it, I found the netserv.inf file in c:\windows\inf and tried to use it to reinstall File and Printer Sharing. However File and Printer Sharing was not listed. I copied the netserv.inf file from another Server 2012 VM and was able to install File
and Printer Sharing using the copied NetServ.inf. After rebooting the server I was able to access network shares on the server.
