  • Wireless connection 'local' only - problem solved

I had problems making a wireless connection to my new BT Homehub3. Ethernet connection fine. Wireless stopped at 'local' connection and no internet access. I read many forums, spent over an hour with BT's helpline in India (extremely competent) but to no avail. The BT guy took over my laptop and tried everything imaginable but no success. The consensus on the forums was that there appears to be a compatability issue between Windows Vista and some hubs (not specifically BT).
I found the solution in an obscure Windows Update - an optional one from 2010 that I hadn't noticed. This had the name of my wireless card (Atheros) in the title which I wouldn't have recognised until this BT Hub problem arose. Downloaded the specific wireless card update and I'm now using the wireless connection to send this post.
Might be worth checking for your own wireless cards just in case. Hopefully BT engineers might find this info useful.

The original poster has not returned to the forum since December, however if you connect your computer using an Ethernet cable, then go to the Windows update page and ask it to look for updates, there should be an "optional updates" section, remember to download all the critical ones first.
Look at "hardware updates" and see if it shows the update for your wireless card.

  • WRT160N....Local only

I just purchased a WRT160N Wireless router and i still cant connect to the internet. When i do the set up, i says that it cannot find my internet connection and i can connect local only. There is something blocking my router and my modem. I am running Vista 64 bit on a laptop with a DSL connection from AT&T. I have my phone line connected to a modem and then to my router then to my computer.
When i use my wired d link router, everything works fine.  I have tried resetting the settings on the router twice and nothing changes. If anyone could help me it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Out of curiousity, which version do each of you have? Mine is V2, which has been noted to have problems. I got mine by the luck (or lack thereof) of the draw. You don't know what version you get until you get it home and open the box.
For me, I can't even get the router set up. I get most of the way through installation with the disc and then it tells me that there was an error and to start over completely.
I tried setting it up through the ip, but no luck there either.
It should not be this complicated.

  • Local only connection on multiple wirelesss connections

I've seen several posts to this affect, but no resolutions.  I have a WRT110, one wired connection which works fine and multiple wireless connections.  Only one wireless connection can be active at a time.  If connection A is active, and connection B comes on-line, connection B takes the internet connection and connection A is left as Local Access Only (but still connected to the router).  After connection B goes off-line, connection A can reestablish internet connectivity after a short period of time.
    Any thoughts?

I would suggest you to readjust the wireless settings of the router...On the Linksys Setup Page try doing the following settings.
    Under the Wireless tab..
    - Set the Radio Band to Standard-20MHz and change the Standard channel to 11-2.462GHz
    Under Advance Wireless tab..
    - Change the Beacon Interval to 75,Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304,Change the RTS Threshold to 2304.
Now,try to connect both the laptop...

  • Don't buy U330! Wifi 'Local Only' Issue can't connect to internet anywhere!

If you are familiar with the local only problem, like I have become in recent weeks, you know the frustration of not being able to connect to the internet with your brand new computer when your ten year old laptop can surf the web with no problem.
Normally the 'local only' problem is restricted to Vista for its newer network configuration under ivp6, but after five weeks of attempt to solve the problem, I have concluded that the lenovo U330 and its components are to blame.
I hope someone here can help me stop advocating ban on purchasing U330 by helping me solve this problem.
Here is a list of things I have done so far....
    Clean install vista
turn off ivp6 in all network components
go to regedit and set ....world = 0
Fix all DHCH word32 key to 0
    uninstal ibm wifi connecting software
update the wifi driver from intel/lenovo
Still unsolved, I  installed windows XP and repeat step 2 - 6
Still unsolved, I installed Windows Vista 64 repeat step 4,5,6
There are few more procedures I went through to fix this problem. I have spent literally weeks trying to solve this problem.
Lenovo sold me a laptop that does not connect to following locations: Local library, school network, local church.
I understand this may be a Intel driver issue more than the lenovo laptop issue, but I don't care. I just want my internet to work.
I will appreciate it if someone can come up with a solution to my problem.  And please don't tell me to contact the computer administrator of my school/library/church/local library to upgrade their hub because my Lenovo is far too advanced for their network.

I am an engineering student and I have enough knowledge in computer hardware and software to know where left is from right.
My school network engineer spent over an hour to find a solution to this issue to no avail.
Therefore, if any potential customer whos knowledge in computers is below the network engineer's level should do themselves a favor and avoid purchasing U330 laptop.
I know it sound absurd, but this is the truth, and I really hope I can apologize to anyone I may offend when my problem gets solved.

  • Laptop shows "access: local only" when connected to this hotspot

I have the Verizon Jetpack 4G LTE Mobile Hotspot MHS291L set up in my home environment.  I have a number of computers that are able to connect to it and use the internet.  There is one laptop that I have (Lenovo SL500) which is Vista SP2, that has trouble connecting to the Jetpack.  I went into the Connected Devices settings for the Jetpack and noticed that this particular laptop was in the Blocked Devices section.  I Unblocked the laptop and it then appeared in the Connected Devices section.  Not sure how it got into the Blocked Devices section in the first place.  Anyways, upon trying to connect to the wireless network, I looked at the wireless network connection and it shows "Access:  Local only" instead of "Acess: Local and Internet."  It seems like the laptop connects to wireless, but I cannot browse the internet in any browser.  Also, I have tried this laptop at someone else's house that has a standard wireless router (no hotspot) and the laptop connects fine and is able to browse the internet.

The network status indicator on Windows products cannot always be trusted.  Windows uses its own algorithm to determine its connectivity by checking a few resources on the web.  In a nutshell if Windows can make it to the resources then it declares itself internet connected or otherwise.  What you should do is your own troubleshooting to determine what is truly going on.
First step is to check your IP Address.  Windows will display a 169.254.xxx.xxx IP if it is not completely connected to the current router/jetpack.  If that is the case then your laptop has not been accepted onto the router and you should check your connection credentials or recreate your connection profile.
The next step if you have a normal and good IP address is to manually check the internet by browsing to a website.  Even though your computer cannot communicate the way it wants to that doesn't always mean that all internet communication is having a problem.  You should always try a simple browse to Google or another popular search engine or website when experiencing problems to confirm the scope of the situation.
Pending on how these first two simple checks go you should proceed one way or another.  Chances are there is a wireless profile conflict on your Vista machine for your Jetpack. The best course of action would be to wipe the wireless profile and start over from scratch.  I'd start here and work my way outwards.

  • "Local Only" Connection out of nowhere.

Alright, so I've been using the Linksys CISCO WRT610N for over 6 months now and suddenly my internet connection no longer works, it just says "Local Only," and I can access the router itself but not the internet.
I don't use a modem at all for my connection, just an ethernet port from the wall into the router. When I stick the ethernet port from the wall directly into my computer, my connection is fine. If I go from the wall, into my router, then use an ethernet cable from my router to my PC, I get "Local Only".
I'm using some crappy ISP from my apartment complex that has offered little to no help, and blames everything on my router, or me, or something to do with me. Any help would be appreciated. I've tried resetting the router and also powering on/off but nothing seem to does the trick.

First of all make the following physical connectivity for the router:
The router’s power adapter needs to be plugged to your router and into an available power outlet.
If using a wired connection, the first Ethernet cable needs to be plugged to the computer’s LAN port into any of the router’s blue numbered Ethernet ports.
The second Ethernet cable should be plugged to the modem’s Internet port and the other end into the router’s yellow Internet port.
Ensure that you have no firewall enabled that may prevent the router from being detected.

  • Lync SBA limited connectivity

    Hi
Do lync SBA/SBS support DNS load balancing ?
    I have the case below
    1 SBA
    2 Enterprise edition pool
Internal web services is not same as pool name and pointing to one of the FE
the user registered in the SBA showing limited connectivity only when both enterprise edition are up , if I reboot one of them it will show full connectivity until the server be up again the windows fabric finish
it doesn't matter which server I restart it will always show full connectivity during downtime of one of them
Snooper is showing these main two even I have seen
    <response xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/rtc/2008/08/UserServices/EptRp" requestId="45" version="1" from="https://POOL_FQDN:444/LiveServer/Focus" to="https://SBA_FQDN:444/LiveServer/Focus" code="failure">
    <updateEndpoint reason="uscUnavailable"/>
    and in another message
ms-diagnostics: 4233;reason="Presence and Conferencing services are not available because the User Store is down or the connectivity to datacenter has been lost";source="SBA_FQDN"
    Please advise

Web services on the Enterprise Edition pool needs to be Hardware load Balanced, the Internal Web services should not be pointing to one FE node. DNS load balancing is only for SIP traffic, which minimizes but doesn't remove the need for Hardware load Balancers.
Presence and Conferencing issue, with everything online:
Recommendation: Remove fabric issues by adding a Third FE to the pool (Or take a look at: http://ucnew.wordpress.com/2013/08/16/lync-server-2013-2fe-2be-high-availablity-issue/)
Run get-cswindowservice on each FE and SBA, see if any service is down
Run invoke-csmanagementstorereplication and a few minutes later get-csmanagementstorereplicationstatus, see if any server is still false
Confirm the latest CU is applied to the FEs and SBA (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2809243)
Confirm database updates are applied to the back end
    Test-CsDatabase
    -SqlServerFqdn backenedsql.domain.local -SqlInstanceName
    lync -CentralManagementDatabase
    Test-CsDatabase
    -SqlServerFqdn
    backenedsql.domain.local-ConfiguredDatabases
    Test-CsDatabase
-Localservice                    (Run local to the SBA)
Run Step 2 (setup or remove Lync server components) of the Deployment wizard on each FE
Any errors in the Event logs on the FEs or SBA?
Any issues with users homed on the Enterprise edition pool?

    Please help!!

    Fascinated and guessing:
Something related to sock(2) because that's not part of your copied info. I'm thinking you've doubled up on sockets and the second socket doesn't exist, meaning you should be connecting to the first socket "mysqld.sock" whether automatic or not.
I've only used GUI tools on purpose, so does this mean you've already got MySQL running and you tried to launch it again manually? Perhaps you already have one instance of a db and you're trying to launch a second instance, and the two can't coexist with a single user local db?
Assuming this is all local, I'd shut down the db service and restart it, out of hand. I've seen similar messages when I set the db to start up on boot, and it didn't finish shutting down when I tried to restart it manually. Usually the GUI won't let me turn it on because it reports it's already running, but in that case it hadn't finished performing what the GUI was reporting.
    Just speculating.

  • Thinkpad yoga - limited connection - intel 7260AC (with solution that worked for me)

    limited connection issue
i'm new to the forum, sorry for bad english
i've a brand new rhinkpad yoga, with win 8.1 and intel ac 7260 wifi card
first of all the solution that worked for me is moving from WEP to WPA2 protection with the router
the problem was that i wasn't able to connect to internet using wifi
i got "limited connection" and i wasn't able to access internet at all
windows validated the connection and obtained an ip, but it wasn't then unable to access internet at all, i also wasn't able to access or ping the router.
i also got an error stating the lack of the default gateway, but this one seems to be resolved by windows check and repair procedures
my router had wep protection, and i used it with no issues with 2 android smartphones, an android tablet, a mac and a linux system, and in the past with windows 7 and vista systems.
i've searched for solution all the night and checked everything
    - system and driver update (via usb thetering)
    - various command to reset network configuration
    - unchecking selected check box in energy saving tab inside wireless property panel
but the only one solution that worked was the move from WEP to WPA2
    hope this helps
    my first post, be patient...

From what I gathered, about the Y2P Limited Wifi issue, this problem is solved by configurating a router to meet the computer needs. Once done, to fully implement this fix, it is adviced  that you carry this configured router and use it every where you go, like a power cord. When you go to Statbuck in the monrining, be sure they hook up your router and return it when you leave. Alternitively, this can be done at other venues like the airport, hotel, school, work, etc.
I really don't know why people keep wasteing their time. Lenovo has chimed in and said this is a router issue. That said, the aformentioned advice is a formulated fix.  Shall we put an end to thiese topics and get the forum moving again past the wifi issues? Like said many times, this issue has been fixed using the above reccomendation.

  • Wireless guest users are getting limited connectivity.

Could anyone help please, I have a wireless guest solution consist of :
WLC located internal in the network – all the AP are associated with that WLC-.
Anchor WLC located in the DMZ . the guest SSID are tunneled from the internal WLC to the Anchor WLC, the DHCP service for guest users is on the Anchor WLC.
NAC guest server to authenticate the guest users.
The solution was working properly but now we have a problem that if any one tried to connect to the guest SSID if he is authorized or not , the user will get IP address from the DHCP pool and now as you know most of people has smart phones and they try to get internet access. Now only 5 or 6 people authenticated with NAC gest server and the DHCP pool become full because too many people tried to connect even they do not authenticate.
so if any user trys to cnnect he will not get IP address from the anchor controller and getting limited connectivity.
if I add static IP address on my Laptop , I will be redirected to the authentication page and can access normally.
I am working in big environment 7,000 users so I can’t go with increasing the DHCP pool because the problem will not be solved.
I hope if anyone can help in this case.
    Thanks in advance.

This is a pitfall and raising  the eyebrows.. currently we do not have anyother option other than using a WPA-PSK + WEB AUTH
    that is..
PSK will block the users to just grab an IP and sit!! , if the user enters a valid PSK, he will get the IP address and followed by the Web auth process!! this may help u as of now.. or just a work around.. to overcome the IP exhaustion..
Please rasie a PER with your accounts team to raise the severity on this issue if u have the contract n all with us!!
Please dont forget to rate the usefull posts!!

  • Limited connectivity with Apple TV 1stG

    Hey folks,
im running a computer with windows 7. My itunes is connected to an Apple TV of the first generation. Everytime i download a movie or tv show via itunes and synchronize with my Apple TV afterwards, i get a limited connectivity after 5 minutes or so (time varies). Unplugging my wlan stick doesnt help. Neither does a deactivation of my wireless adapter. Only solution for getting my internet back to work is a reboot.
Anyone knows a fix or has encountered similar problems? Shutting off firewalls and antivirus software doesnt seem to help. A strange thing i observed is that obviously music files or small data volume arent affected by this problem.
    Regards,
    Thet619

    Hello Thet619,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
From your post I understand you're having issues with your Apple TV's Wi-Fi signal.  To troubleshoot this issue please follow the steps in the article below:
    Additional Information
If the above solutions do not resolve the issue, try restarting your router/base station and Apple TV
Restart your base station or router. Sometimes this is done by turning the router off for a few seconds, and then on again, but check the documentation provided by the manufacturer.
To restart your Apple TV, press and hold Menu and Menu down/scroll for about 6 seconds, and then choose Restart from the menu.
If the issue continues after restarting, reset your router or base station and Apple TV to factory settings
Reset your base station or router. Use the documentation provided by the manufacturer to reset to factory settings.
To reset your Apple TV perform a factory restore.

  • Limited Connectivity after new printer

    Hi,
In short, after adding a new laptop and wireless printer to the network,  network access to all connected computers goes down whenever a computer boots up or awakens from sleep. After a few minutes, access is restored in full but this is very annoying. This all happened after adding the Dell wireless printer using the auto connect button on the WRT110 as per the printers instructions. Doing this connected the printer but killed access to all other computers.
The network consists of 3 wireless routers connected a couple years ago from a guide on this site. It has always worked flawlessly until I hit that button. I ended up doing a hard reset on the cable modem & the main router, pulling all the ethernet cables, and resetting the security pin. This allowed me to get online and I thought it was fixed till the windows 7 laptop went to sleep and woke up to the limited connectivity message, almost like a conflicting IP problem but have had no messages to confirm that. I also noted that by looking at the DHCP status from the WRT110's settings that it doesn't always show all connected computers even when they are accessing the internet.
The routers were hooked up so they could be seen as a single network and you could roam accross the property without switching networks. If I remember correctly, the 2 slave routers were hooked into the main router through the lan ports instead on wan ports. I can't say I completely remember or understand how it exactly worked, but it did. The only things that changed was adding a new windows 7 laptop and that Dell printer to the network. I didn't want to have to re-learn everything I went through to get it up and working before when it seems like the problem had to do with the new items added to the network. It seems to me like the DNS isn't working properly for some reason.
    Some network details:
All connected via DHCP unless noted otherwise
    WRT110
    Cable modem via wan.
    Wii console via lan
    Vista Laptop via wlan
    Windows 7 laptop via wlan
    Dell printer via wlan
    WRT54G
Windows XP / ubuntu desktop via lan (Static IP)
xubuntu / Windows XP laptop via wlan (Static IP)
    LG TV via lan
    WRT110 via lan
    WRVS4400N
    Windows XP desktop via lan
    WRT110 via lan
The WRVS4400N hasn't been turned on over the winter as its' connected desktop is not really used any more, but its' wireless is used often in the summer as it's the closest AP to the garage.
Any help on this would be most appreciated as I don't have much hair left to pull out. I'm not opposed to setting up the network from scratch again, but want to know I'd have some guidance before trying to do so again.
    Many Thanks,
    E

Well I didn't get a change to update firmware today unfortunately. Will probably be Monday now as we have company all weekend.
In my hunt for the original guide I used, (from this site) I was unable to find it again. I found others that were not nearly as informative as the one I followed, but didn't explain about the pros and cons of setting it up lan to lan vs. lan to wan. The guide I followed also went into setting up differnt wireless channels and was way more informative than anything I've been able to locate this time around. I would be very appreciative if anyone knew where I could locate this guide again. I'm certain I had it bookmarked, but may have lost it with my HDD failure this past year and wasn't backed up.
Lastly, I realize I "could" use my other router as the main wan router, I just wondered if there was any advantage in doing so. I was also trying to find out which of the 3 routers had the best real world range, as I would use it to get a better connection in my garage.
Thanks again, and regardless I will still report back after the firmware update, and whether it fixed the problem.
