Limited Internet Speed in OS X

Hi, I've been having problem with the internet speed available to my Mac. I have a 2MBit broadband connection and, while my families G3 iMac and my dads AlBook both seem to be able to use the full connection, my TiBook and my new iMac Core Duo only use half (at best) to a quarter (usually) of it ie 50KB/s rather than 200KB/s. Now I've just got this iMac and transferred the settings over from my TiBook so I'm 99.9% sure it's a problem in OS X but I'm not sure what. I know it isn't the internet connection because two other macs work fine and it isn't the router limiting on IP because I've changed the IP and it doesn't do anything. Both the iMac and TiBook are connected using Airport to a Netgear router and both are running Tiger.
Does anyone know what could be causing this?

Should we assume the other macs are connected to the router via ethernet? How's the airport reception on the two macs? How far from the router are the macs? Any signal degrading issues like walls, partitions, etc?

  • RVS4000 & WRVS4400N Limited Internet Speed

Both of these model units apear to have a max Internet downlink speed of about 26 or 27Mbs. I have tested this with 10 different units at 3 different sites where the provided broadband downlink speed is a full 50Mbs, including in my own office. My normal router is a Cisco ASA5505 and I have also connected a Cisco 1840 router and even an old Linksys router and all achieve the full 50MBs speed using a variety of speed test sites. The cable modem at my office and at the other sites have a gigabit LAN connection and the RVS4000/WRVS4400N units certainly should be able to achieve the 50Mbs speed. I would appreciate a Cisco rep replying to this. If this issue can not be resolved, my clients will no doubt want me to install a different manufacturer's unit, which I will do.

    Hello Ed Ruth,
I did some research and found the following:
Previous issues similar to yours were fixed or at least the speed was improved
    after disabling some features like:
IPS => internet speed, disabling the firewall also improved notably speed throughput
    in this device.
According to Cisco's developers and engineering team:
In  the datasheet the speed stated is a maximum aggregated throughput -  upload and download on all ports when IPS and Firewall are disabled. In  the real world Internet connections there are a lot of factors which  prevent router to get the maximum speed - encapsulation, interference,  errors, protocols session negotiation and error correction etc.
The  product has a lot of features, that is why download speeds are not so  high when the device performs a routing. For the raw power, customer  needs a device with less features and more speed-oriented like gamers   routers. If customer doesn't need business features as VLANs, VPN, SNMP  etc., we can recommend E3000 router rom the Cisco Home product range.
My  best suggestion if you have further questions and are really concern  about this issue which is a matter of device's capabilities, I will  suggest that you open a case with TAC so that they can guide you better  about if this will be necessary to contact Cisco's presales or provide  you with some other options you can take advantage of in order to get a  different device or disable the features mentioned previously.
Hope this helps you with your issue.

  • Internet Speed Limited on Windows 10

Hi! After installing Windows 10, I have a problem with my internet speed on my notebook. It connects to my personal wifi network, but the speed is limited to 54 Mbs. A friend of mine connected his HP notebook to the same wifi network and his speed was 150 Mbs. I do not seem to know what the problem is. I tried almost everything: - reinstalled the drivers- reset the rooter- disabled the power-off option for the adapter- tried resetting the IP in CMD Nothing works. I must mention that the wireless button light on my notebook keeps beeping. Instead of staying white, it keeps beeping every second, 1 second white, 1 second orange again and again. This has never happened before. I know that it should stay orange when it is turned off and white when on, but now it keeps on beeping. The slow internet connection problem is obviously related to this wireless button issue. I installed and reinstalled the HP wireless button driver. It does not work. I connected my notebook directly to the rooter with a cable and surprisingly the network speed was still low (54 Mbs), so I can rule out the wireless adapter hardware, as the problems persists on a wired connection. Can you please help me?  It is really frustrating and no solution seems to work.

    Hi  ,
Thank you for visiting the HP Forums! A great place where you can find solutions for your issues with help from the community!
I came across your post about the Notebook, and wanted to assist you! I have looked into your issue about your HP 2000 Notebook and issues with the speeds of the Internet.Try using the Windows Update Troubleshooting tool to fix the problem. Here is a document that shows how to update drivers that are not working correctly with Windows 10.Here is a link to the HP Support Assistant if you need it. Just download and run the application and it will help with the software and drivers on your system that might need updating. The HP Support Assistant has a built in troubleshoot for Wireless that could help. Thanks.

  • Internet speeds keep slowing down to a crawl

I'm having a problem that has only developed in the past week which was during a time when I haven't changed any configurations in that period of time since my son was born a week ago yesterday and I obviously had more important things to do than mess with my network configurations. However, about 2 weeks prior to his birth, in the process of configuring a baby monitoring system with icam source, 3 weeks or so ago, I read that I might be able to improve my internet performance, I ran googles namebench a couple of times and added and re-ordered the DNS servers that had been listed prior to any problems developing based on its' reports. My internet speeds improved as a result of changing those DNS settings and stayed good until the past week. But of course, we now need to use the computer as part of our baby monitoring system and it's not working worth a **** and I'm getting frustrated since I can't put my finger on the problem and I don't really have time to spin around in circles right now. I'm sure it's probably something simple and I can't put my finger on it though. Sleep deprivation is new to me.......
I've kept running log of notes so this is a little deshoveled but I figured the more information I provide the better the chance someone might help me get this solved quickly.
In the last week, since my sons birth, my internet speeds would be okay after restarts and resetting everything, 2.5 Mbps or so but after a 10-15 minutes it starts to slow down to .2-.3 Mbps. I went thru all my network settings, restarted everything, repaired permissions, I've changed ethernet cables reset PRAM, firewall is running, stealth mode enabled, allow signed software incoming connections and my various other programs such as netsessionmac4f3c6b, skype, java, itunes, etc.
All sharing services off and pretty basic login items at startup including growl.
I had AT&T come out and check my DSL line and everything checked out on their end up to and out of the DSL modem based in their equipment tests.
The problem seems to start when I connect my imac (a fairly loaded 27" imac I got in Dec.) First off, as soon as the imac is connected to the modem via ethernet, the old ethernet modem flashes and continues to flash, even right after startup. So the tech thought something was running in the background and I can't figure out what. I looked through login items but don't see anything that would be a problem and am afraid to eliminate everything.
So I created a guest account to eliminate any login items (I think) and in I got 5.69 Mbps right off the bat. But after a minute or two, without changing anything my download speed slows down and I get for example .77 Mbps. The same thing happens with my administrator account on the imac. Fast speeds at startup and more importantly if I change the configuration by switching between ethernet and airport, I get fast speeds right after changing the configuration but after a minute or two I am well below 1.0 Mbps. I've got several network configurations with automatic, airport and ethernet set up in different ways including a clean ethernet connection with the original DNS settings.
I haven't set up an airport only account but that really isn't the way I want to hook up the computer that sits right next to the modem and runs my network. Restarting the old modem and direct connecting the computer to the modem results in the same thing happening.
I connected my ethernet from the (old?) modem directly to my ancient powerbook G4 and I got +5.6 Mbps download but it also slowed down to 300 kbps after 5 minutes or so the first time (old modem?)
Now to explain why I have "old?" listed above. I was then able to get a new DSL modem from AT&T, hook it up just fine, get enormously faster internet service in the 5,000 kbps only to have it slow back down to around 300 kpbs after connected for several minutes.
    directly connected to imac-bypassing router
    3,500 kbps
    after 15 minutes-250 kbps
connected to imac thru router/time capsule with airport extreme
    2500 kbps
    after 15 minutes=166 kbps
directly connected to an older powerbook G4 with new modem
    IP address of 192.168.1.64
    5.65 Mbps on speedtest
    after 15 minutes=5.67 Mbps
    after 30 minutes= 5.59 Mbps
    1 hour-5.66 Mbps
Very solid, stable readings for what I am used to. This would seem to isolate the problem to the imac.
directly connected to imac with new modem
    IP address of 192.168.1.64
    5.8 Mbps on speedtest
    after 30 minutes= .60 Mbps-ping takes 250 ms
    1 hour= .46 Mbps-ping takes 250 ms
Now a problem that only started last night after I hooked up the new modem and started up my old Time capsule/airport configuration, I got a message that said something to effect of "another device on this network is using computer IP address 192.168.1.64. So I tried manually changing last digit of the IP address on the computer to one number higher and it kept saying the start and end range were incorrect so I shut the airport station down since when it was connected, it would not allow the computer to connect thru the router via ethernet. I did a hard reset on the airport and I got it back up and running just fine but the internet speeds on the imacs' ethernet connections are so slow it's practically worthless. I also checked to see what was connected to my airport on any given occasion, 2 iphones, 2 pads, another imac running upstairs and a newer powerbook running icam source that is supposed to be the baby monitor. Except for the laptop everything can use "802.11n" but the powerbook only connects via 802.11g so I have set the airport to that limiting setting.
Any suggestions? Is there a way for me to log what is happening so I can report in more detail?

First thing is to check if the wireless is on a sensible channel: HomeHub doesn't always make sensible choices.  Install inSSIDer on your laptop and see what other devices there are around and if there is any clash.  Also, try moving the HomeHub around a little, even quite small differences can make a big difference to wireless signals.
You could run an ethernet cable from downstairs to upstairs.  Easy to do, but can be a bit unsightly.  If most of your devices are upstairs, you could use this cable to connect the modem to the HomeHub.  If you have devices both up and down, you may want to keep the HomeHub downstairs and add a switch upstairs.
HomePlug may be suitable for you.  If you search Amazon for HomePlug you will see a couple of kits for just over £30.  Don't go for an 85Mbps one.  A 200Mbps such as the TP-link or D-Link should be much better than wireless, but not as good as a cable.
Depending excatly how many devices you want to connect and where, you can pay more and have a builtin wireless at one end: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Devolo-1408-Wireless-N-HomePlug-Adapter/dp/B00472MMCQ/ref=sr_1_15?ie=UTF8&qi...  Or it may be best for you to use the basic devices and add an old wireless router in switch mode.

  • Win 7 on bootcamp partition, very slow internet speed

    hi!
it might be an answer to my problem somewhere on this forum, but
right now i do not have the time to browse through - so ill just post my problem quick and simple.
im running windows 7 ultimate on a intel imac, via bootcamp. the issue is simple, yet pretty annoying.
in iOS, my internet speed is great, as it should be (my bandwidth is 12/12 mbit).
but in windows 7, for some reason (been like this ever since install) things are going SO slow.
i mean, watching videos on youtube is a nightmare, every 3 second at lowest quality possible, it still
has to buffer. same goes for other streaming sites/services. downloading usually does not exceed 300 kb/ps, but in
ios this could easily hit 1,5 mb/ps.
if i listen to music on say grooveshark (adjusted to lowest quality) the music stops to buffer if i load a different webpage. its that bad.
ive taken a bandwidth check in windows and in iOS, and in iOS the speed is normal, in windows its 1/10th of what it should be.
anyone know why this problem persists?
as i know of, windows 7 doesnt have any bandwidth limiting of default.
so i thought it might be a windows 7/imac hardware conflict. help?

Hi, I'm having the same problem.
    I installed win8.1(64bit) on a iMac7,1 20inch(mid 2007) using Winclone.
Everything was working fine after I downloaded some driverhelper and installed those drivers.
Yet the internet on Win8.1 is very slow, the download speed is merely 60-100kb/s .
While if I open the Mac system, the same resource can easily to beyong 2MB/s.
As I have 25Mb/10Mb connection at home.
I'm new here , don't know exactly what driver I need to fix this problem.
    Try to install boot camp.
However, I tried 5.0 / 4.0 , it all said bootcamp x64 is not supported on this computer model.
Don't know where i can download the bootcampe 3.0 to have a try ?
Or is it just too old iMac to be fixed?

  • How can I read the internet speed in a MAC?

How can I find the INTERNET SPEED in a MAC?

You typically use a free Internet Speed test. It does an upload and a download from a known site, bypassing certain configuration problems. Just do a search to find a dozen services eager to test with you (in exchange for the Ads on their pages).
Do not pay for this service, and DO NOT accept any CR@P they suggest you download to "fix" your speed. They cannot tell from outside whether you have problems, and none of the things you can download ever makes anything better.
If using Wi-Fi, one generally finds that the Wi-Fi part of the connection is the limiting factor.

  • Boot Camp Internet Speed Drastically Different From OSX Speeds

I'm running windows 7 in BootCamp on a Mac Air (Early 2014); in BootCamp I am averaging 5M/10M. That's right for some reason my download is slower than my upload on the windows side.
On the OSX side I average 80M/15M.
    These are both wireless numbers.
As you can see this is a drastic difference.
How can I take full advantage of my internet speeds on the windows side?
I have installed the BootCamp 5.1.5640 Drivers 3 or 4 times now per Apple's website however this has not changed my results. I have also disabled auto updates in windows as I know that can sometimes overwrite the drivers from Apple.
Any assistance or suggestions would be great!

This could be all sorts of things but i am inclined to have the same suspicion of others here which is that your ISP is messing with your bandwidth.
In the UK pretty much every ISP shapes traffic, i've ended up buying a VPN internet service to get around this permanently (this appears as encrypted traffic over the shttp port to your ISP) this is the only way i've managed to get consistent speed with everything.
The only thing this doesn't protect against is if you're ISP is throttling your entire connection - they usually only do this if you start to break your monthly bandwidth limits.
Anyway like i said this might not be the case at all... however you can get free VPN trials to test this, this one provides trials on request (they are manually initiated so be patient): http://www.yourprivatevpn.com/

  • Verizon Internet Speeds

    Dear Verizon,
My parents pay for this verizon plan for our home and wireless devices. I love verizon becuase of the products and services it provides, but I really have a few areas of confusion. First, we pay a TON of money every month for "up to 75 down/75 upload speeds". What I do not understand is why I am getting 15 down and 18 up WHEN WE SPECIFICALLY PAY TO HAVE FASTER SPEEDS. I live in an area very capable of getting those speeds, and when I go online to try to find a phone number where I can call someone to help, I literally cannot find anything but this forum.
This brings me to my second question...
If Verizon really cares about customer feedback and making sure their customers are satisfied, then how come they LITERALLY HAVE NO WAY OF CONTACTING THEM WHATSOEVER. An automated machine only includes the options that is convenient for their employees to answer (and simplistic preanswered questions/topics), so it gives them the leverage when trying to fix an easily fixable problem. If I can describe my problem in one sentence and I'm just a college student, Verizon engineers/ professionals should have the time and minimal expertise to listen to me so we can get what we pay for. Thats it, I'm not even demanding undeserved services, I WANT WHAT I PAY FOR.
And this is a company worth 303 BILLION DOLLARS. That is 45% of the United State's national deficit as of 2013 (est. 680 Billion)

Here are a couple of points for your consideration:
    1. Although this forum is monitored by Verizon administrators (or whatever you want to call them) they seldom show their faces here.   There is no form of techincal or general support offered here except that which other Verizon users (like me) offer.
    2. You will find many postings here about problems with overall Internet speeds. The bottom line is there are many causes for this; some are the fault of Verizon, and some are not.  Again, in general, if you want to measure your upload and download speed you shoudl do it from a hard-wired computer and definitely not a WiFi connected one, and you should do it when no one else in your home is using the Internet for anything.  This includes a PC running something like Carbonite or anything else doing "background" data transfers.
    3. You will also find many posting here about people having problems with or being disappointed with Verizon's customer service. As  long time Verizon customer myself I've come to the conclusion that this is just a fact of life. My sense is that, in general, people dislike telecomm companies almost as much as they dislike insurance companies.  But that's just my impression.
    4. In general I've found FIOS to be the best quality service available in the US - outside of the special fiber networks Google is installing in limited locations. Verizon service is, of course, quite expensive. So as the saying goes, "You pays your money and takes your choice." Verizon is well known for offering better deals to new customers than it offers to existing ones; again, this has simply become a fact of life.
    5. On the few occasions I've had to deal with Verizon tech support people I've always been happy with the results. It is not easy to reach them, but it is possible.  The automated phone system will ultimately get you to a live person, but it does take a while.  My best results have been finding a local tech in a truck working somewhere else in my neighborhood.

  • Slow internet speed with Site-to-Site VPN

I have 2 RV042 routers, one is version 1 and the other is Version 3 and both have up to date firmware loaded. Both ISPs are cable, one is Comcast and the other is Mediacom. I have set both MTUs to various different settings and set the upload download speeds in Bandwidth Management. Speedtest.net shows speeds at office # 1 of 30/5 and office # 2 is 10/2. The VPN connection is always active. My problem seems to be this, if data is ever being transferred between the offices the internet speed for office #2 slows down to 1.5/.12 but there isn't really any notable differences at office #1. Does anyone have any idea of what could cause the drop in speed.

This makes perfect sense depending on the size of the file. Bandwidth is limited to the speeds you stated, no matter what resource is using them--internet or vpn. Also, a large factor is that with asymmetrical bandwidth that when a lot of upload bandwidth is used, the download bandwidth suffers as well.
I bet most of the time when this happens, the file is being transferred from office #2, thereby using up all the available upload bandwidth.
Office #1 won't see the effects from file transfer because the file transfer is using download bandwidth not upload bandwidth.

  • BT has limited my speed even though I have upto 20...

I have an unlimited (upto 20mbs) broadband package. I was tired of the slow speeds and was really close to switching providers but the BT rep told me that he would ensure that my speed would be as high as possible for my area and offered me a monthly discount of sorts upon renewal.
However It is clear to me that BT are limiting my speed to 4 Mbs. I have complained twice to BT and have gotten nowhere.
There are 2 heavy internet users in the household and 4 Mbs shared between 2-3 people is not acceptable when we could have easily gone to another provider.
I suspect heavy users are PUNISHED by having their speed limited.
BT are clearly breaking the contract here, can i cancel and switch provider?
Or can a BT rep here help me fix the problem without me having to do so. thanks.

    welcome to the forum
in order for someone to help please can you post the adsl stats from your router may need to 'show detail' to get all stats (if hub enter 192.168.1.254 in your browser and navigate to adsl or use a-z, if netgear enter 192.168.0.1) and run btspeedtester (MAC users may have problems) http://speedtester.bt.com and post the results .
are you connected directly to the NTE5 master or test socket or to somewhere else? Do you have any phone extension sockets in your home?
Have you tried the quiet line test? - dial 17070 option 2 - should hear nothing - best done with a corded phone
Someone may then be able to offer help/assistance/suggestions to your problem

  • Airport Express (vs. Airport Extreme) in internet speed

I live in a small dorm room and I have varying internet speeds on my university network. I would therefore like to create my own reliable network to use on my Macbook Pro Retina, iPhone 6, and iPad Air, which I believe all make use of fast connectivity. So my question is that will Airport Extreme increase my internet speed versus the Airport Express? I used an ethernet-USB adapter and got 94mbps download, 94mbps upload and the Wifi network gave me 131mbps DL and 187mbps UL. I know that Extreme offers up to 1.3Gbps and Express up to 300Mbps, but if the ethernet port offers speed likely less than 300Mbps, does it matter which Airport I get?

You should always buy the extreme when you want speed.. a second hand Gen5 AE from ebay is much smaller and neater than the new AC one.. and will give you 450Mbps on 5ghz.. as well as gigabit..
You will need to buy thunderbolt to ethernet adapter.. the USB one is limited.
Internet speed will still be determined by the uni network.. so improvement in that might or might not happen.. 11

  • Apple TV and slow internet speeds?

I live in Ireland and unlike the US, we have quite slow internet with a national max of about 7mb (which is what I have)
How would the streaming work with this kind of network?

    Iremonger wrote:
Are those speeds, related to the stated internet speeds, or the download speeds? The usual download speed is around 600kbs for me, hit 1.3mps once but haven't got close since then.
I have a fixed 1Mbps connection in UK, and I strongly suspect that for rentals, the new device will do what the old one did - in other words it will not let you play until enough has downloaded to theoretically allow you to watch the movie completely as the tail end of the film downloads in the background.
I hope that the new device will save the rental stream to the device's internal solid state memory (8GB) to allow you to pause/rewind/restart/rewatch etc during the playback period WITHOUT having to redownload.
If on the other hand it stores nothing, buffers a small amount, and relies on a fairly nippy internet connection to stream live, you, I and many others without high speed connections will be stuffed for rentals.
Anything in your iTunes library however that's compatible will be limited for playback by your home network speeds not the internet.

  • HT1386 Because of limited internet on my iphone 5, i download updates to apps thru ITunes and then sync them to my iphone.  Lately, the apps download properly and the sync seems to go thru, but on my phone, they keep saying they are updating and it never

Because I have limited internet package on my att iphone 5, I update apps on my computer thru ITunes and then sync them to my phone.  The downloads seems to go thru and then install.  But when I turn on my phone, the affected apps continue to say they are updating and it never goes away.  I do not have wifi but when I am connected, the apps don't update.  Help!!!!

Oh my gosh I had the EXACT same problem, and for ages I couldn't figure out how to fix it until today. Here's what I did:
First I went onto my computer, opened itunes, and un-installed tumblr, vine and kik. These were the apps I was having problems with (it said I had them on my phone but, like you, they didn't show).
Then I went to the itunes store, searched for each one, and it said I could update them so I did (just FYI: for tumblr a window popped up saying "please click ok to confirm you are 17 years or older", so I did that also)
When I went back to my phone and tried installing them again (still on my computer), it worked!
I hope this helps, because it was incredibly frustrating. Good luck!

  • Time Capsule only runs with 1,1Mbit up/down during data transfer, internet speed is ok, TC is used to extend an existing network

    Hello Everyone,
I have a new 2TB Time Capsule running with a MacBook Air. I want to use the TC to access data (Aperture library, iTunes library, other Files) and to backup my MacBook Air via Time Machine. I set it up, integrated the TC in my Network (FritzBox) by choosing "extend existing network" and it works. BUT only with 1.1Mbit/second while writing or reading Data to/from it. Internet speed is very good, like it was before. While the 1.1Mbit/second seem to be ok with Aperture and iTunes (streaming music and movies) it is still painfully slow and I'm not realy happy with that
    I've read that:
The 1.1Mbit problem is pretty common when Time Capsule is integrated and used to extend a network (bridge modus), it also looses all ethernet connectivity then (that woul explain why connecting it by ethernet didn't help during initial setup and data transfer)
Is there a solution besides ditching the Fritzbox and using the TC to build the network? Because basicly I still need the Fritzbox for its DECT features.
Thank you for any help in advance and have a nice day,
    Olli

You have double hop wireless with this setup..
You should bridge the TC.. that is router bridge not wireless bridge, and plug the TC into the Frizyboy by ethernet.
Then you can setup the TC wireless to reinforce the fritzy..
    Same wireless name as SSID.
Same security settings... really should be WPA2 AES or in TC personal.
    Same password..
    Just different wireless channel.
Then you can use 5ghz on the TC if you are up close and personal.
