Limited number of applications open

I am having difficulty opening more than 5 applications of my intel mac mini (1.25 gb memory). I have Safari, Entourage, DynDNS, Acrobat and Indigo open (all Roseta) and cannot open another application. if I quit one, then another opens. Error is :"The application XXX cannot be launched." #-10810

The good new is that this problem has been reported in PPC macs, so Rosetta is not at fault.
That said, mooted problems have included security update 003-05 (not applicable to Intels, so its out) and HD SMART failing (not always reported, so its out).
I suspect that it may have to do with how much the individual machine can handle. Loads of RAM may not be the solution though. I think the problem lies in the amount of swap space available. Remember - OS X uses swap. How much space is available on your HD? Free space, I mean?
Also, a memory leak may be the problem. Try opening Activity Monitor first. It will report what apps are open and the Disk Usage tab will report free space.
Then, run several apps until you get the error. Go back to Activity Monitor and look out for suspects - apps that are chewing resources doing nothing or apps you know you quit that are still living in memory. Report back here...

  • Applications opening at start

When I boot-up my macbook air, the a number of applications open immediately (including Excel, Powerpoint, iTunes).  How do I stop these applications from opening on their own?

Quit them before shutting down the computer, and ensure they're not set to open at login in the Users & Groups pane of System Preferences.

  • Limited number of Apps allowed to be open

In the last few weeks, like after an Office update I installed, I am limited to the number of applications I can have open. It doesn't seem to be isolated to specific apps either. I'm very confused any ideas?

Is there a certain number of applications you can have open before things won't open anymore?
If you try to open another application, what happens?
Have you tried working in another user account to see if the strange behavior persists?

  • Limitation on the number of applications for a domain?

Does anyone know if there is a limitation on the number of applications you can

java -XX:MaxPermSize=... worked, so now the app server starts fine
    Thanks a lot.

    Rob,
I deployed 291 EJBs into the applications directory for a weblogicdomain, since

Interesting. Is that really how you want to structure your server?
The behaviour I ran into was weblogic server was not able to startcorrectly,
it seems to stuck on some infinite loop, keep printing out the samemessage saying
it's trying to active xxx.jar, but as soon as I reduce the number ofEJBs to a
certain number(238) in this directory, weblogic server started correctly, deployed
xxx.jar just fine.Without more information (like showing me what error it printed out),
    I
can't tell you where the problem lies.
However, the server is limited by the heap size, and the class size
space is another limit you might hit.
I would suggest increasing the heap size as well as the MaxPermSize in
    your JVM.

  • Limited number of apps - poor support

I have bought my printer 2 years ago a photosmart B110. When I bought the product HP was advertising great apps that support the printer functionality. They mentioned apps for google docs connection etc.
Until today NO useful app appears in my list of choice. The company just does not put ANY effort in supporting this kind of functionality.  I like that I do not have to connect my laptop or my tablet to the printer via USB, but so far, there has not been any web functionality that has brought any benefit for me.
    That is very disapointing.

  • Leaving applications open when not in use

This may be the world's dumbest computer question but what effect does it have on the OS to leave applications open on the dock when not in use? Any? Apps such as, e.g., Office 2008? Does it slow the OS to have apps open when not in use? Or perhaps no effect unless using them? Does it matter if Safari is left open after logging off a secure site?
I've been compulsive about closing what's not in use but I just installed Office 2008 and Word and Excel, for example, are slow to open so I'd like to just always leave them open on the dock.
Sorry if this is just too dumb. I searched but didn't find anyone else who had asked. Maybe everyone else knows.

    Hi Memalyn
Essentially, the bare issue is that you have a 500GB hard drive with only 10GB free. That is not sufficient to run the system properly. The two options you have are to move/remove files to another location, or to install a larger hard drive (eg 2TB). Drive space has nothing to do with SMC firmware, and usually large media files are to blame.
My first recommendation is this: download and run the free OmniDiskSweeper. This will identify the exact size of all your folders - you can drill down into the subfolders and figure out where your largest culprits are. For example, you might find that your Pictures folder contains both an iPhoto Library and copies that you've brought in from a camera but are outside the iPhoto Library structure. Or perhaps you have a lot of purchased video content in iTunes.
If you find files that you KNOW you do not need, you can delete them. Don't delete them just because you have a backup, since if the backup fails, you will lose all your copies.
Don't worry about "cleaners" for now - they don't save much space and can actually cause problems. Deal with the large file situation first and see how you get on.
Let us know what you find out, and if you manage to get your space back.
    Matt

Actually it isn't Alt-Tab on OS X, it's Command-Tab to use the Application Switcher.
Also, Control+ left/right arrow key will switch spaces if that's what's desired.

You will need to restore it. The sidebar of your iPad appears on itunes even if you dont enter the passcode. There's the option to restore it. More info:

  • I have a number of tabs open, which never used to be an issue, but lately, Firefox continally tries to load these tabs, and causes the program to crash.

I have a large number of tabs open on Firefox, and while this had never been a problem before, all of the sudden, the program crashes. What happens is that when I get the tabs loaded, Firefox will attempt to reload these tabs, which it had not done in the past, and because of so many tabs trying to reload, it crashes the program. Also, when I click on a tab, it reloads it as well, again, something that had never happened in the past. I need to know what I can do to stop this from happening, so I can once again enjoy using Firefox.

It's the Resume feature of Lion:
Managing Mac OS X Lion's application resume feature.
If you shutdown your computer you should get a dialog asking if you want applications to resume on the next startup. Simply uncheck the box to prevent that from occurring. Open General preferences and uncheck the option to Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps. You can also install a third-party utility to control resume features on individual applications: RestoreMeNot or Application State Cleaner.
