Limited searching on Group share, can't automount

Hi, OS X Server newbie here, but I'm starting to get a decent feel of how things work.
I have set up OD and the client computers up with mobile accounts that store their home directory locally but still allow authentication. I lumped the appropriate users into a group, say "officegroup", with their own share, /Groups/officegroup.
Now, once clients log in to their workstation, I cannot get the group share to automount. To access it I have to go through Finder, enter the username and password, and it works fine. I thought that upon login, authentication would be good to go to access other services and the user would not have to enter their username and password in again. I've checked DNS (dig, dig -x, -checkhostname, etc.), and everything checks out fine and says that it's all being resolved correctly. So, what am I missing?
Second, it seems that searching is limited in the group share. If I search for something, only folders come up, but no files. Spotlight is enabled on the share, I've rebuilt the indexes with mdutil, but nothing changes. Any ideas?

I wanted to write what I found out in hopes of helping someone else who uses OS X Server and isn't as experienced as some people who contribute here. When I upgraded to 10.4, I was using Netinfo domain and Open Directory to bind my clients to the server. In WGM I had to authenticate to LDAP, for reasons I still don't completely understand. I wasn't however, correctly using LDAP for authentication across my network.
I used Server Admin to migrate my Netinfo domain to LDAP in Open Directory. Then I turned on DHCP in OS X Server and turned off DHCP on my router. Then I used DIrectory Access to configure LDAP to use DHCP-supplied addresses and added an entry for my server. I disabled Netinfo on each client once I verified that this worked.
Once this was done the automounts showed up in the correct location as specified in WGM. And no, you don't have to create the folders on the client machines. In addition, my authentication for my users has been fixed to use LDAP properly (well, at least as far as I can tell at this point).
All of this info is in the Open Directory and Authentication Manual. The lesson I learned is that the OD stuff has to be properly configured otherwise services that depend on it will not perform quite right. What's scary is that I used this half-baked configuration since I installed Tiger a long time ago. I run a simple server-based enironment in my house, so I never picked up on the inconsistency.

there is a workaround you can try, create audience and add DL to them and deal with the audience or convert DL to groups

Can 2 cost center group share same cost center?

Dear Experts,
Can 2 cost center group share the same cost center?
Basically I'm looking at MATRIX structure where one cost center, say an Equipment shared by 2 different cost center groups (say one in "Location-A" cost center group, and the other one is in "Process-A" cost center group). This is to enable the management to be able to see the costs incurred in either by "Location" cost center group or "Process" cost center group.
The "Location-A" cost center group may tied to Cost center 101, Cost Center 102 and Cost Center 103. The "Process-A" cost center group may only tied to Cost Center 101, and other cost center 201 (which is also tied to other "Location-B" cost center group).
Please advise.

Hi Abraham,
its not possible to assign a cost center to several cost center groups in the standard hierarchy. Otherwise, the standard hierarchy would be inconsistent.

'You can assign each cost center to only one group in the standard hierarchy, but to as many alternative groups as you require.!

Bug/incompatibility? SnowLeopard server problem automounting group share point on Lion clients

I've been using Wazza's Server Notes for Snow Leopard server, with great success. But now I've run into something that I don't think is user error.
Here's the rundown: school network, mix of PPC Leopard, Intel Snow Leopard, and Lion clients running off a Snow Leopard server. Clients are bound with server. Things that work great: account access, managed preferences, file sharing, mobile accounts, even network image deployment.
Now the latest obstacle: only on Lion clients, the Group Sharepoint will not automount. I know it's not mounting (as opposed to merely not being seen). Finder is configured correctly. I know it's not a conflict of managed preferences--I isolated this one managed preference from the others to make sure of that. And moreover, the Group Sharepoint appears fine, using any user account on any Snow Leopard client. Only the Lion clients don't cooperate.
I have heard rumors that Lion is still a little bit buggy. Is that the culprit? Or is it rather that Apple wants me to upgrade my server to Lion if I have Lion clients?
Regardless, is there a workaround?

Well, no, now I've eliminated that line of reasoning. I had no problem getting the User Home Sharepoint automounted, via computer-group managed preference. Which means that in principle there shouldn't be problems automounting in a lion client.
What I am noticing is that, in general, the lion client is having plenty of success handling managed preferences of computer groups in WGM, but not User groups. For example, the lion client stops loading one of my startup apps if I use user-group preferences to set it.
Problem is, the group Sharepoint can only be ticked on within the users and user groups preferences. Too bad it doesn't do anything,

Limitation on source group with services using ip address range

Hello,
I have an interface on CSS which I regard as public and another interface I regard as private. On the private interface is a server farm with private ip addresses. Since the server admin guys insisted the servers need to access internet just for Windows Update, I made a source group to NAT the private addresses to public addresses to allow the servers to access internet.
I defined services for use by the source group. Since keepalive is not important in this case, I set keepalive none to ,I hope so, save system resources.
I have server 192.168.1.1-5 (5 servers) and 192.168.1.11-14 (4 servers), so I made a service with ip address 192.168.1.1 range 5 and another service 192.168.1.11 range 4.
But then I found that the two services cannot be put in the same source group. It is because of the different range in the service definition.
I can get it work if I define services with single ip address, but then I will have a long configuration with repetative information. And I think this may be using more system resources.
I can also get it work if I include 192.168.11.15 and define two services both with a range of 5 ip addresses. But 192.168.11.15 is not actually there.
Why is there such a limitation on source group, or services with ip address range? Is there the same limitation for content rules? Or am I getting it all wrong and should do the configuration in other ways?
Advices will be welcomed.

Yes you are correct. There is a limitation while adding services into source groups.
You can create as many services that share an ip range (eg. a /24 subnet range). But the trouble starts when you add them into source groups. You can not add them into a source group NOR you can add them under different source groups as well.
You mentioned that you can use single ip adress instead of range for the services...but it is not true as you will be stuck when you add them into source groups.
I can think of these following options in your case.
Option 1
Change the ip range on the servers. Use 2 different IP ranges one for those 5 servers and another for those 4 servers.
Create 2 services for each range.
Create 2 groups and add the services.
service server-out-192.168.1.1-5
ip address 192.168.1.1 range 5
active
service server-out-172.168.1.11-14
ip address 192.168.1.11 range 4
active
group server-out-192.168.1.11-14
vip address x.x.x.1
add server-out-192.168.1.1-5
active

Option 2
Create a service that includes all the ip addresses starting from 192.168.1.1 through .14 using the range keyword.
Now you need to create one source group with a VIP. Add the service to the source group.
If you do not want to cover the unassigned ip addresses just move them up and use consecutive ones.

Can systemd automounter unmount inactive fileystems?

Hi,
tl;dr: Can systemd automounter unmount fileystems after a period of inactivity, like autofs does?
I've just started discovering the wonderful new world of systemd, and to my great joy I found that it contains an automounter, so I thought that I would be able to use that instead of using autofs.
The single thing that I like to automount is my home NAS on my laptop (via NFSv4) that I every day take from home to work and then back home.
To do this with autofs is kind of like killing mosquitoes with a flamethrower. I would much rather just have my automounted NAS defined in my fstab than having to force the slightly mysterious autofs.xxx-files to mount the drive with the options I want it to use.
So, I got systemd to automount my NAS and all was joy! Until I realized that it wasnt unmounting it after a time of non-use. I have googled quite a bit, searched the forums, but have found no mention that systemd either has or doesnt have this kind of functionality.
So my purpose with this post is to get a definitive answer, does systemd do this? And if it doesn't, maybe others searching for the same information will end up here, and find the answer...

I've been having this problem for as long as I can remember. I have finally decided to sit down and work something out instead of my laptop hanging all the time when it can't find the nfs server. The systemd.automount feature is nice, but it really sucks that it does not auto unmount when the share is not found.
Also, having systemd.automount means that every time I open vim, or a manpage, and there is no network connection, systemd tries to mount the shares. I'm not sure why because I am not directly accessing them. Everything loads slowly when systemd automount is active for my shares and there is no network connection.
Using soft instead of hard is a workaround, but then when the network connection is lost, corruption can occur.
It seems like the only way to really solve this problem is to have some kind of script run when the network comes up to mount the shares, and to unmount when it goes down. This would require custom systemd units or something. Diving into the systemd manuals is something I have been putting off because they are so hefty.
For anyone that is interested, here is my fstab:

We are planning to implement a group structure where there a quite a lot of groups that has to be created. that's why i'm wondering if there is a limit to the number of groups we can create in CMC.

I have NOT come across any limits but you need to be very careful on how many nested layers you create and if you are also going to use 3rd party security like AD &/or LDAP. Then you will see some performance issues.
How many groups are looking to create 2,000 / 4,000 / 6,000 ?

Symptom
On Windows Server 2012 or Windows Server 2012 R2, when you use the Search for Group Policy Objects feature in GPMC, the “Value” field is not populated when you choose “User Configuration” as the Search Item. (See Figure 1.)

Cause
The happens because the Data of the (Default) value of the following Registry Key is not correct.
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\GPExtensions\{4D2F9B6F-1E52-4711-A382-6A8B1A003DE6}]
By default the Data is (value not set). (see Figure 2)

Resolution
The registry keys under [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\GPExtensions] are the Group Policy Preference Client Side Extensions. The CSE name of the GUID {4D2F9B6F-1E52-4711-A382-6A8B1A003DE6} is
RemoteApp and Desktop Connections. Please follow the steps below to resolve the issue.
1. Locate the registry key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\GPExtensions\{4D2F9B6F-1E52-4711-A382-6A8B1A003DE6}]
2. Take the ownership of this key: Right click on the registry key and choose Permissions option and click the Advanced button on the dialogue window. Then on the Advanced Security Settings dialogue window, click Change button to take the ownership
of the key for the current logon account and make the current logon account Full Control permission with the registry key. (See Figure 3.)

3. Change the data of (Default) value from "(value not set)" to
"RemoteApp and Desktop Connection Component". (See Figure 4)

Updated to 10.5.6, no longer able to search through networked shares.

One of our users was able to search through our network shares(extreemeZ-ip) just fine yesterday morning, mid morning he updated to 10.5.6 and is no longer able to use finder to perform searches on those shares.

We ARE on Mac Servers, but only version 10.4.7. All networked computers are Mac OS 10.5.6, except for one, which is on 10.4.11.
Command-F) FIND no longer works on any of the Leopard boxes. Works fine on the one box with Mac OS 10.4.11. I can do simple searches for files I know are there, but it can not find anything. I have checked all permissions.
I found this thread (http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=8654089&tstart=0) and the solution he wrote of works, but that's such a backwards way of having to search.
Would the spotlight issue also pertain to Server software 10.4.7? Thanks in advance for any help!

What is the algorithm the system uses to compute group share for B, C?
Does it use multiple iterations and does it solve the system of equations for this?
Is this algorithm documented somewhere? (exept for simple example in the hepl)

Spotlight searches on network share points are slow

I have a 2008 Xserve running SL 10.6.8
I can perform local spotlight searches directly on the server with no issue. When users connect to a share point on the Xserve and attempt to search it using Spotlight, Finder freezes and pinwheels for a while and finally recovers and continues on with the searches.
The freezing can last as short as 5-10 seconds and can be as long as a few minutes. The users are getting irritated as this is a common occurence.
If I restart the Xserve, the issue will go away for about a week. It's almost like clockwork...a week goes by, and the Xserve needs to be reset.
The hard drives in the Xserve are over 3 years old, and I'm not sure if it could be a hardware issue or something else entirely. Does anyone have any suggestions on what tools I could use to determine the health of my Xserve's hardware or any other ideas as to what may be causing this issue?

Ran a Drive Genius scan and integrity check on the RAID volume on the Xserve with no errors reported... so either Drive Genius isn't finding anything wrong or the drives are genuinely in good shape.
I'm planning on setting up some Automator scripts to restart the server during downtime on the weekends but I feel this is a less than desireable solution.

Hi,
Lion has changed the way reminders (todos as was) work. They now seem to need to be in a seperate calendar.
In iCal open the File menu and select New Reminder List... and select where to put it.

Product Group capacity can not be seen in MF50 output

Dear All,
I can not see the product group in 'total capacity' subscreen in output of planning table MF50.
In MF50 the input parameter i am entering is product group and plant.
In the scheduling tab of input parameters detailed scheduling and capacity planning is tick.
For some product groups i can see in output as "Product Groups / Total Capacity" and also in the rows below it shows "Prod.Grp XYZ" then requirement and available quantity rows. After which the production line rows follows.
For some product groups when enter in initial selection screen of MF50 with same input parameters in output i do not see Product group but i can see "Total Capacity Data" and then the rows starts with production lines. But no information on capacity of product group.
The setup of all product group is same and are created with MM01.

In 'Control Tab' i am not selecting any parameter. So in output i can see all materials in 'Material Data' section which are included in product group irrespective of requirements.
I have issue in upper half section of 'Total Capacity Data'. I can see the different production line rows with Requirement / Available rows with capacity values in each period. Unit is %.
But i do not see 1st row for Product group row with 2 subsequent rows (requirement / available) with unit KG.
I can see these rows only for some product groups but not for all.
For the product groups for which i do not see these rows have capacity requirement in selected periods which can be seen in same output in production lines rows. (where selection in input screen is product group and plant)

consulte your MM guy material master screen group and selection is done by MM guys in general. There they can do setting for this.
Also why you need MRP group. If it is maintained. It should be done properly otherwise it will create lot of problems.

There isn't anything in contacts that has "create a group" . That's why this is so frustrating. I've tried creating a new contact and dragging names into it - doesn't work. I can't find anything that helps!!! What am I missing?
