Limiting Bandwidth usage for MDT 2013

Hello Technet,
I recently built up a MDT 2013 platform (on server 2k8R2) for deploying our Windows 7 image to over 125+ computers in our building at the same time. Our deployment server, which is a VM, is located on the same host and switch as our web server
(not my design) and I am forced to limit the bandwidth usage to only 50%. I know WDS was/is able to limit bandwidth usage when multicasting, but I haven't found anything online about MDT being able to limit it.
Do I need to have the WDS role installed on my server to limit the bandwidth or can MDT 2013 do this for me. As always, any and all help is appreciated!

• Bandwidth required for Lync 2013 audio video call

Hi,
what is the required bandwidth required for lync 2013 audio video call from out side of company network. considering users will use owa integration with exchange 2013 for audio video call.
i tried with lync bandwidth calculator but could not figure it out.
actually i have some remote site where users have connectivity of 160 kbps only.

There are a number of variables such as call type and video resolution, but I would suggest using this table as a guide:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj688118.aspx
For example for capacity purposes with a Lync peer-to-peer call you're looking at 57Kbps (86 with FEC)

• Cannot get bandwidth usage for Wildblue but can on IE

We have a bandwidth usage meter on Wildblue Satellite Service. 2 days ago, it quit working. If I change from Firefox to IE, it works. Any ideas?

What I found after much research.....In Wildblue's many changes they have made recently, they inadvertently locked all my permissions in the sign-on screen to my account management and therefore was unable to access my usage. Thanks for your help. Problem solved!

• Monitoring Bandwidth usage for individual hosted sites on osx server?

Does anyone know of a good way to monitor bandwidth consumption for individual websites hosted on osx server?

Part of this answer depends on server configuration details that you haven't provided.
Are you looking for 'bandwidth' as in total bytes transferred for any given site? or are you looking for a megabits-per-second network throughput calculation?
Are your various sites logging to separate log files? or a single, unified log file?
If you want a total bytes transferred calculation, then that data is stored in the standard log files, so a simple parser that adds up the response sizes would suffice - it will tell you that x number of bytes/megabytes were transferred.
A bandwitch utilization graph (e.g. mbps) is a little trickier, though.
Are your sites running on the same port, using name-based virtual hosting to separate the traffic, or are they running on different ports?
If different ports then you may be able to implement some kind of network monitoring, but if they're all running on the same port (e.g. 80) then that doesn't work - you're down to Apache logging.
The standard Apache logs, though, don't include enough data to calculate a bandwidth graph. It does include timestamps of requests, and the total bytes in the reply, but that's not enough - the timestamp is only accurate to the second, and there's no indication of duration... for example, a 1mb web page served in 1 second equates to 8mbps, but that same file transferred in 30 seconds is only about 273kbps.
Since the transfer time is required to calculate the bandwidth utilization for the site, you'll need to amend your logging to include the transfer size. You'll need to enable mod_logio and add the %O (output bytes) and %T (request time) variables to your log format. Only then can you calculate the bits-per-second throughput of your site.

• Tips on limiting bandwidth usage

lIke turning off cloud which I suspect isn't practicle. I don't back up photos or mail just contacts and notes and reminders and stuf. Anyone know of a decent bandwidth monitor that I could use to monitor which apps are hogging all the bandwidth and where its going when the iPad isnt in use? I'm biding my time with this thing. Don't want to buy anything for it If I can help it. Plan on switching to windows 8 product as soon as I wear it out or drop it or let my temper get the best of me.
tried searching for onavo in App Store didnt find it.

Do have a cellular wifi device I used to use but ate through 5gb like it was nothing. Now have slow broadband microwaved off a mountain top 14 miles away near the closest town. They don't hesitate to throttle me when I use too much. So I don't look at videos (usually on facebook) unless they seem really interesting. Avoid hd like the plague. Now days with many web pages taking as much as 10mb to load and my doing a lot of reading and googling I burn through quite a bit. For instance a mopar forum I went to once took like 80mb to load 2 or 3 pages. So when I see my iPad used 200mb I'd like to know where it all went. Especially when I am on extended trips with the wifi/cellular device. If it was to safari than at least I would know I did it. I have no way of telling that which is one thing about the ipad I find frustrating. That isn't an issue with windows. At least I know on my laptop where all the bandwidth went. I keep all my data on a smart card and back it up to a couple of different places. So thank God no need for cloud.

• HP Client WinPE Driver Packs and MDT 2013

Just today I noticed that HP had a couple of WinPE driver Packs for download on their site for WinPE 3.0 and 4.0. I'm using MDT 2013 to deploy Win 7 x64 for now, perhaps Win 8.1 out in the future. What version of WinPE does MDT make for Boot Images? Which
driver pack would be best for MDT 2013 and Win 7 deployment? WinPE 3.0?

• MDT 2013 Wizard page not skipping

Hi all,
I am trying to reduce the amount of user intervention required for MDT 2013 to deploy a Windows 7 SP1 32 bit system from a Windows Server 2008 Standard box and I'm progressing well however, I've discovered that a wizard page won't skip. Specifically the
one that asks you to confirm time, time zone and date settings which appears right before MDT progresses to installing applications.
Here are the rules I have configured for my deployment share:
[Settings]
Priority=Default
Properties=MyCustomProperty
[Default]
OSInstall=Y
EventService=http://x.x.x.x
SkipLocaleSelection=YES
SkipTimeZone=YES
KeyboardLocale=0809:00000809
UserLocale=en-AU
UILanguage=en-US
TimeZone=255
TimeZoneName=AUS Eastern Standard Time
From what I've read, if you use a Skip wizard page option, there are prerequisite settings you must configure such as the keyboardlocale, userlocale etc and I've also gone through the MDT help topics andd found a table that contains these settings however
what I've found, is that although MDT will set the correct keyboard location and time zone settings, it still asks me to confirm it before proceeding to the installation of applications.
Am I missing anything? Does the order of the rules matter? Not sure what else to do.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Yea, that should work, code snippet from DeployWiz_Definition_ENU.xml is:
<Pane id="SelectLanguageUI" reference="DeployWiz_LanguageUI.xml">
<Condition><![CDATA[ UCase(Property("SkipLocaleSelection")) <> "YES" or UCase(Property("SkipTimeZone"))<>"YES" ]]> </Condition>
<Condition><![CDATA[ Property("DeploymentType")<>"REPLACE" and Property("DeploymentType")<>"CUSTOM" and Property("DeploymentType") <> "StateRestore" ]]> </Condition>
</Pane>

• Wifi Calling - Bandwidth usage

Hi there I have bought an iPhone 6 so that I can use the wifi calling at home due to lack of phone signal. I am trying to find out the bandwidth usage for a call using this service? If I have a few friends around and my home internet is a terrible 1Mb down and 0.5 up - when will teh calls start bombing or jittering etc? I also work for a tech company and I'm interested how this will effect our client's office internet or their public wifi for the hospitality clients Thanks in advance Neil

Hi ,
Thanks for joining the EE Community.
To use WiFi calling we recommend a minimum connection speed of 1mbps.
Thanks

• Create Image using MDT 2013

Hi ,
I am quite new for MDT 2013. I have recently installed MDT 2013 in my Windows Server 2012.
Now , I do have about 10 physical machine with different hardware specification inside. I have installed Windows 8.1 with all required software in it and now I want to distribute the same image in all 10 another physical machine.
Can anyone provide me the steps to implement this...
Do I need to create the image using image x software and then use it as a standard image to be deploy it in rest of the systems..
Thank you...

I was getting exact same error.
here is what I did to fix it.
You need to do all this in a virtual envinronment.
1- import Windows 8.1 x64 from the DVD and add it to your listed os in MDT
2- create standard task sequence and select the OS you imported in step one. you need to add suspend to your TS ( look it up on how to )
3- For some reason WinPe x64 bit kept giving error during deployment so I used WinPe x86.
4- import Winpe x86 boot.wim into your WDS if you use Pxe boot or create a boot disk from the ISO and boot your VM from it.
5- deploy windows 8.1 x64 to your VM ,make sure to select " capture image ".
make all the necessary changes when windows is installed and MDT suspends the deployment, take snapshot of your VM , and then cintinue the deployment to finish the capture.
6- import the new captured image into MDT
7- creates new standard TS or modify your existing one to deploy the newly captured image.
8- update your deployment share and start the deployment of your new image.

• Upgraded to MDT 2013 - old deployments not working - parse error - copyprofile error

I upgraded from MDT 2012 U1 and Waik to MDT 2013 and ADK 8.1. My windows 7 deployments quit working after the upgrade. I installed ADK 8.1 and upgraded 2012 to 2013 then upgraded the deployment share. Since the upgrade I am getting copyprofile errors
when MDT is trying to sysprep the machine then I am in a reboot loop. Not sure what changed. The error is "windows could not
parse or process the unattend answer file for pass [specialize]. The settings specified in the answer file
cannot be applied." In the setup log files it says the copyprofile could not be done. The deployments all worked before the upgrade. Any ideas? Thanks.

Thanks for your reply. My DISM file doesnt tell me anything. It is not at the location after the system reboots. The exact message I get is
Windows could not parse or process the unattend answer file for pass(specialize) The settings specified in the answer file cannot be applied. The error was detected while processing settings for component Microsoft windows Shell Setup.
I get this message from all of my windows 7 images when trying to apply them. These were okay until I updated the deployment share for MDT 2013. Under the shell setup in the unattend.xml I have
BluetoothTaskbarIconEnabled (blank)
ComputerName (blank)
CopyProfile True
DisableAutoDaylightTime false
DoNotCleanTaskBar True
ProductKey (blank)
RegisteredOrganization CompanyName
RegisterOwner CompanyUser
ShowWindowsLive false
StartPanelOff (blank)
TimeZone Central Standard Time
Something in the unattend.xml that 2013 doesnt like perhaps?
Thanks..

• MDT 2013: bootstrap.ini not applying username and password for share access

I customized my bootstrap.ini file to skip the welcome screen, set keyboard locale, and enter a service account username and password for share access. The welcome screen skip and keyboard locale work beautifully but it's not applying the share username/password/domain

Basics - Server 2008 R2 - SP1, WDS, MDT 2013
Well all, I've done this at least 20 times today and the deployment share info is still wrong...
Someone else built and messed with this thing so i'm trying to fix it. We have 2 MDT servers and 1 WDS that is on the Production MDT. I've turned the test MDT off.
It was working fine, until I updated the deployment share ... after adding some drivers for the surface pro 3 for the pxe boot
Very Simple bootstrap.ini
[Settings]
Priority=Default
[Default]
DeployRoot=\\MMPDEPLOY02\DeploymentShare$
UserID=xxx
UserDomain=xxx
UserPassword=xxx
KeyboardLocale=en-US
SkipBDDWelcome=YES
It continues to show up on the client as ||mdt901w8|deploymentshare$ (test server) (pipes for \ since it makes it a link and i'm new)
I've deleted all the .wim and associated files from all locations from the deployment share\boot folder and from the wds remote install\boot\x64\images folder where they are instead of the remote install\boot\images folder that everyone refers to.
I really can't figure this one out... I know it's something simple I'm over looking but I can't see it..
Any ideas..

• Patch management for Office 2013 on MDT

Hello,
on current MDT 2012, Office 2013 is added as an app. MSP was created for customization and placed in Update folder (did it a while ago)
I am preparing new MDT 2013. Deployed OS will be patched with latest updates. So Windows update will not take initially any time for applying patches after deployment from WSUS.
I would like to know best practices for Updating Office 2013 on Deployment Share.
Please provide a link or instructions: where to get latest O2013 Update Packages (at least security and critical) and how to place them properly in Update folder. Can it coexist with Customization.msp?
1. What is the right thing to manage this? No SCCM in place.
2. Does somebody includes Office 2013 in the image and then use GPO for customization?
Is it a valid scenario? I see at least 2 advantages: no additional time after deployment and full patches for the moment of image creation. Than it could be updated in the moment of image update.
Does it make sense? What are disadvantages of this approach?
thanks.

Thanks to all!
Ty, I added a lot to my knowledgebase during bombing :) you with the questions since last week :) ... Thanks for the answers...
I purchased Johan's Fundamentals V4 (found it more applicable to my current needs).
A bit in pressure this week need to push 2 models deployment quickly and correctly as possible.
So don't have time to Deep Dive.
What I achieved Driver Group approach works find for tons of drivers. Tried just on model now...
Have to solve sudden issue with WinPE that was working fine and suddenly stopped working.
For O2013...
Just to make things fast I installed O2013 in reference image.
If I understand correctly I cannot use MSP file after the installation is made. I suppose to create it and add to Updates folder of the O2013 source.
So now my option is to work with GPO. I have a configured one for O2013 APPV deployment.
It works great.
Don't remember if I can manage by GPO applications appearance in the Office. (Example want to exclude Publisher and Access from being used on client PC).
Can somebody point where is the option in GPO for selecting individual apps within the Office.
In my MDT2012 I use O2013 deployment as App and use MSP.
For Appv Office I use apps selection from APPV manager. So not sure if it is doable from Office GPO.
Thanks.

I have narrowed this issue down to .net 3.5 install.
I have boot, efi, sources, support, autorun, bootmgr, bootmgr.edi, and setup.
I have confirmed that the sxs folder is there.
I also just added WindowsSource=%DeployRoot%\Operating Systems\Windows Server 2012 R2 SERVERSTANDARDCORE x64\sources\sxs to my customsettings and updated the boot iso. I am still receiving the errors.
One last bit of information I am able to get to the deployment share with the sxs folder in it from the reference machine I am creating but when I manually try to install .net 3.5 from roles and features to the share it fails. But if I copy the files local
they work fine.
I seem to have permission issues with other subfolders also.
Thanks,
Anthony
