Limiting capture when capturing VHS via DV converter

Hi,
Is there any way in FCPX or iMovie 11 to limit the capture of a VHS tape via a DV convertor (e.g. Canopus ADVC)? Alternatively, will capturing stop when the VHS tape comes to an end, or will it keep capturing until I click stop?
I have hundreds of VHS tapes to transfer and I don't want to have to babysit the machine!
Ideally, I want all the files in .mov or .dv format so I can edit in FCPX.
Many thanks!

BenB - thanks for confirming there isn't a way to limit the capture duration
Thomas - thanks for info about analog not being able to capture in FCPX - I have also come to that conclusion, and I am currently using iMovie to transfer my 8mm tapes using a Digital 8 camcorder. I also assume canopus would have the same issue as there wont be timecode in the signal.
1 Open Loop - My specific question on this post is about limiting the capture duration, which I now have confirmed you cannot do (i.e. is a VHS tape is 1hr 20min, I want it to stop after that time, rather than recording a blank signal till I click stop. Same goes for iMovie).
Do anyone recommend other software to do this job (other than FCP7 which I am trying to avoid using for now)?
Thanks

  • IMovie 4 only records ~8 second clips when transfering VHS via Sony DCRHC32

I am attempting to transfer old VHS tapes directly to my Powerbook using iMovie 4.01. When I start the process using the Sony DCR-HC32 using the analog passthrough feature, I click import and iMovie begins fine but then after about 8 seconds, stops with a blue screen (which says camera connected); when I select import again, iMovie simply records another clip for about 8 seconds and then stops once more. I deselected "automatically start new clip at scene break". Is there a better way to record vhs without having to first save to a miniDV tape and then send it to my Mac?

PROBLEM SOLVED: I removed the tape from the Sony DV recorder; FileVault is ON; the iMovie file is in SHARED FOLDER.

  • Trouble capturing video from VHS via Analogue to DV converter

I use Final Cut Express 1.0.1 and I've always been able to capture video from VHS via a Director's Cut analogue to DV converter box. Today it keeps freezing on me. I've tried force quit, logged off and back on again and even re-started the computer. I've got plenty of space on my two hard drives (125GB free on main drive and 85.42GB on my scratch disk).
I'm sure I've set the rest up correctly (composite cable from VHS to DV convertor box set to output and connected to input slots on box, and DV box set to capture). The box is correctly connected to the Mac.
I've also logged on using another user's account to see if the same problem occurs, and it does. I believe this means that dumping the my preference file won't help, but please correct me if I'm wrong. Any ideas how to stop this freezing on me would be much appreciated.
    Thanks
    Karen

Last bit of help from Martin may have some mileage in it as far as excluding hidden problems with the drive you are capturing too.
Have been reading into the requirements for the hard disc and it does make it clear having a separate one like you have is almost a requirement because of the work it does. Would it be worth trying a small capture to your system disc. If it helps that is how I am working at the moment so it doesn't appear to be instant fireworks if you do use this one but give it some thought first...
On the firewire port side of things I have seen some unexplained connection issues on this front which were cured by shutting things down, unplugging and then beginning again. Take it System Profile didn't yield anything?
Now I got back in front of my Mac it appears Quicktime Pro will allow capture from an attached device but appreciate you may not have the Pro bit, iMovie should be as good a test.

  • A problem capturing VHS tapes into FCE via Miglia Directors Cut

I am trying to capture vhs recordings via Miglia Directors Cut into FCE. FCE does not seem to be recognising or capturing. The footage will be visible in the capture preview window but when capture is started nothing appears in the main capture window and the preview goes back to No preview available.
The VHS deck is connected to the directors cut via composite cables, and the Directors Cut is connected via firewire to my G5. Does this in itself create a problem?

Use the FCE Easy Setup called *DV-PAL DV Converter* if you are working with PAL video (DV-NTSC DV Converter if you are working with NTSC video).
Also make sure all settings in the Miglia unit are correct for PAL video.
Also, I have found it helpful to have the video running before you click the Capture Now button.
One other thing, the Miglia Directors Cut spec sheet says that it is not compatible with the PowerMac G5 or Mac Pro. I do not understand why this should be unless it has something to do with the unit being powered by the FW bus. Do you happen to have the optional power supply for your unit?

  • Capturing VHS-C footage: Will this method work?

Ok, I'm new to the whole Video and Digital manipulation realm, but I wanted to run this by everybody before I tried it out.
    Two questions:
    1. Would this work:
    - Capturing at DVD quality (I mean, it's VHS-C tapes, not exactly IMAX level stuff)
    2. I'm using my S-VHS player and my DV player as a bridge to my computer. Which of these two is better/higher quality (or either I guess):
             a. Plug my s-video into my vcr and dv player, then usb into my computer, then capture that video using the dv camera as a bridge
              OR
              b. S-video into my dv and vcr, capture the footage onto my DV camera, then import that captured footage from the DV camera.

If you are passing the video through your DV camcorder using AV-DV option, the camcorder is converting the AV to DV, the camera would do the same if you were recording that input to tape.  Either way it is DV.  When you capture DV via Firewire, you are capturing a stream of binary data that meets the DV IEEE1394 standard.  It makes no difference if the stream comes from the pass-through, or from recording to tape first and then capturing the tape.  There is no change in quality loss between the methods.  Recognize however, the source was only VHS and the DV copy by either method can't be better than the VHS.
As for USB, I do not believe that Premiere pro can capture a USB input, the Premierr pro miniDV/HDV option is only for IEEE1394 capture.
Your USB connection may be passing through a camera-specific utility and being recorded as a AVI file on your HDD.  You then have to import that file to Premiere using the project panel

  • Capturing VHS

    Hi all,
When I was on Final Cut Express, I would capture VHS by connecting my video recorder to my DV camera, then choosing Easy Setup > “DV PAL – DV Converter”. This selection doesn't appear in Final Cut Pro. Can someone tell me the best way to capture VHS?
    Many thanks,
    Andrew

Same process as before, just instead of “DV PAL – DV Converter”, use "DV Non-Controllable Device".

  • Different approach for capturing vhs to fcp

yes i know an often asked question ... i happen to have a kona 3 card but it doesn't have any analog input capabilities. so the way i've captured vhs has been to simply to run it into my mini dv camera and record dv out from the camera through firewire. i think that's how most folks do it. works fine but i'm wondering if i'm losing some quality this way. does it make sense or does anyone convert the component analog out from the vhs deck to sdi which in my case can then be captured through kona. i guess canopus, black magic, and decklink make converters that do this. would i be gaining any quality this way? thanks.

You have a grasp of the issues and no, you are not really losing anything by using the DV cam as a converter. VHS was such a sucky format to begin with, the only thing that really might help is to put a TBC between the VHS source and the A/DV converter to deal with any timing/chroma issues.
The Canopus ADVC300 has a line TBC built in which does help some. It's not as effective as a frame TBC.

  • Capture video via usb elgato or canopus

I can't find how to change my capture source, or even where the capture preferences is.
I'm trying to capture video in FCE using the Elgato usb analog in/usb out device (same thing happens with the canopus device) .
The device works fine with it's own software, but I need to get it going within FCE, and can't find the menu window to even select the source.
I'm sure it's something simple I'm overlooking, but thanks for your help.

FCE will not capture video via USB. With the DV Converter preset you can capture from a FireWire device. This is selected in Easy Setup.

  • Problems Capturing Video via FireWire

I have had problems capturing video via firewire on my MacBook Pro. It is an early 2008 model. I have tried capturing video using multiple programs, cables and cameras. In both Final Cut Express and iMovie ('08 and '09) I loose the connection mysteriously. It just stops sensing my camera mid capture. I can shut the computer down, programs down and cameras down but nothing seems to work consistently in getting it to work. The weird part is that it does work some times. Recently I tried an auto capture of a whole miniDV tape through a sony handicam via iMovie '09. It got 20mins of the tape then stopped and rewound the tape. When trying it again it read "connection error". I could not get it to work. I put the computer to sleep and came back later. It worked but only captured about 10 minutes then shut down the whole camera and import completely. I switched to manual import and it will now only let me capture about 20 seconds at a time. What is going on? To me it seems like the port itself is malfunctioning and disconnecting the signal randomly. Has anyone else experienced this? What is the cause and what can I do about it?

I've been reading the forums and it seems that there is an issue with the Firewire port in general. I have an external firewire 800 HD and when copying large files or a large number of files the HD gets dismounted unexpectedly. Your case seems similar in that we are both transferring large files via Firewire. Anyone have any fixes for this?

  • Cannot Capture Audio via AJA IoHD

I suddenly cannot capture audio via my AJA IoHD. I am using a JVC ProHD deck which connects through SDI to the IoHD and then into the Mac via FW800.
The system audio is routed to the IoHD. FCP AJA IoHD 720p 59.94 Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) easy setup is selected. Capture Clip Settings are set to capture 8 channels of audio, 48Khz 24 Bit.
I've got to be missing something. Previously captured clips have audio and playback no problem. I can see it in the meters.
Now when capturing I can hear the audio but nothing registers on the meters and once captured there is no audio on the clip.
I cannot think of what I am missing. I've been racking my brain and pounding my fists for hours. (That hasn't worked either)
    Any ideas?

Yes... forgot to mention that the audio box is checked in the log clip settings pane. It behaves as if it isn't though.
I just called Apple support and they were decidedly unhelpful.

  • Need help capturing data via JavaPOS

I am new to JavaPOS. My requirement is to integrate our webapplication with a Hypercom optimum L4250. Users will use this device to enter sensitive numerical data like SSN, Phone number etc. The device is JavaPOS compatible. The idea is to run an applet to read the input from this device and fill the corresponding field on my webpage. I am not sure where to start. I have looked up javapos.com and couldn't find much help. Any one tried or implemented such requirement or can offer any direction?
Any help would be much appreciated.

    Thanks for you replies guys!
I need to use java because the ultimate reporting tool
is going to be a service developed in Jini.
The reason I believe the data seem to be wrapped
around after ftp transfer is because when I edited
(TSO FSE from MVS) all text data is aligned withing
    the same column.
After data is transmitted via FTP (converted to ASCII
during trasmition) and edited with wordpad, text
characters do not seem to be on the same possition.
They are scattered all over the display area. Is
possible this could be a display affect from winword
    but not sure.
The MVS job to FTP the file follows:
    //STEP01 EXEC PGM=FTP,
    // PARM='FTP.MIAMIDADE.GOV (EXIT'
    //SYSPRINT DD SYSOUT=*
    //OUTPUT DD SYSOUT=*
    //SYSIN DD *
    user-name/password
    CD /storage
    CD UAL
    ASCII
    PUT 'STORAGE.DCOLLECT.TYPV' 'DCOLLECT_TYPEV.TXT'
    ls -l
    close
    quit
    Words of advice appreciated

YES! 1st mistake ... don't use WordPad for this ... your NotePad, Dos, or some other pure text editor.

  • Migrating from Access to Oracle - Captured Model did not convert

I'm trying to convert an Access database 2003 to Oracle using SQL Developer. I've worked through the migration process to the point where I need to convert the Captured Model to a Converted Model. The first time I ran that step, the application told me there were some issues with some indexes and didn't convert my captured model. I decided to delete my captured model and rerun the process from the point where I import the .xml file and recreate the captured model. I then tried again to create my Converted Model and again it didn't generate. The Converting Database dialog box tells me that it's 'converting the database' and it's 'transforming identifiers' but it just hangs and does nothing. What did I do wrong and how to I correct my issue so that I can create my Converted Model?
    Thank you.

I was able to get past the Capture Model "hang up" business about three weeks ago. (I'm trying to migrate the Access 2003 Northwind db to APEX 3.2/Oracle 10g.) I found a thread in another forum that noted the problem could be due to a memory issue. This particular post referred to an omwb.bat file in a folder omwb. This may have been referring to an earlier version of SQL Developer -- I could not find the bat file. I'm using SQL Developer Version 2.1.1.64.45. I did, although find a sqldeveloper.bat file in my installation path: C:\Software\sqldeveloper_2.1.1.64.45\sqldeveloper\sqldeveloper\bin. In that file there is one very long java command. And at the very start of that command, I changed
    from: java -Xmx640M -Xms128M .................
    to: java -Xmx1024M -Xms640M ................
In the java documentation (http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/docs/tooldocs/windows/java.html) this notes that changing these parameters effect the size of the initial and maximum memory allocation pool.
So that was pretty great -- that it worked. I am at the point now where I've retrieved it all into APEX but it is all invalid and there are so many issues going on all at once that I need to put the project on hold. There is not very much management patience for something like this that goes on and on. Maybe I'll work on it a bit at night now.
Hope the memory thing helps someone.
