Limiting download of email attachments

We use Exchange at work and I have an Iphone. I'm going to be abroad on holiday and I would like to know if it's possible to turn off the automatic download of attachments on email so that I don't end up with a large bill!! (I get lots of large attachments as part of my job).
I cannot find how to do this - can anyone help? Thanks.

Hi Mike,
We used Nokia phones before and there we could even limit the size of incomming emails (the body of the message) to x kb. For attachments, only the name of the attachment was shown. Clicking in the attachment would start the download.
Now we are starting with iPones..... and yes we have the same problem you have !
This morning at 8am my colleague flew to Denmark at 11am he called, he received a text message
from our Dutch provider (KPN) that his data usage is at 50 Euro and that unless he sends a text message
back his data will be blocked.
So in say 2 hours he used 50 Euros of data !!
With my Nokia E72 I travelled to Austria this winter and in 9 days !
with the setting only 2kb of text from each email to be downloaded and no attachments
I did NOT reach the 50 Euro "limit"

  • Since i reinstalled OSX i am having trouble downloading my email attachments

since i reinstalled OSX i am having trouble downloading my email attachments. I have updated the system.

I am using a new Apple TV streaming box. I cannot seem to get any itunes movies to completely download. If they do completely download, it often takes a day or more. Even when the download is apparently completed, ATV will often re-authorize the movie purchase...and the download process begins again. That is about the time I send emails and get refunds. NETFLIZ works beaitifully - fast, easy to use, NEVER a problem. I use a MAC, iPad too but have not synced either with ATV.
Am I doing something wrong? This is incredibly frustrating for my family!!!!

  • I can't download my email attachments!!

Please help, I keep finding that a lot of my email attachments are not available to download.
All I see on the header of my email's are things like:
    2 Files
It only seems to be a problem with BT Yahoo. I use a Mac with OSX Lion. I have asked people to forward their attachments to another mail provider and the attachments come through fine.
    Many thanks in advance.

You seem to be yet another one sufferingthe attachment download problem. The helpdesk told me 10MB was the maximum size of attachment that could be downloaded to MSOutlook etc.
However, I have had connection fail with e-mails having smaller attachments, so I am not convinced that is the answer. The work round is to log on via BTYahoo, and move any e-mails with attachments to another folder, this should allow other e-mail to download OK.
How long before this problem is the subject of a BBC Watchdog programme?

  • TS1506 iphone iOS 7.0.4 won't open/download/save email attachments

I just bought the a new iphone 5s running iOS 7.0.4. I cannot open, download or save any email attachments. This is critical in running a business when I need to view an image or document when I'm out of the office! It works perfectly fine on my old phone running iOS 6. There seems to be a lot of people with the same problem and no fix yet. Disappointing to say the least. Apple, when will you be fixing this?

    Hey Shaymom,
I found these these steps for when you receive an error or alert message when attempting to update or restore your iPhone:
Install the latest version of iTunes.
Verify that your computer operating system is up to date. If an update requires a restart, check for updates again after restarting.
On a Mac: In the Apple () menu, choose Software Update. Install all available updates.
On a Windows PC: Go to the Microsoft Windows Update page.
Check your security software: Note: Most restore issues are caused by out-of-date or incorrectly configured security software, firewalls, and network router settings or firmware.
Isolate the issue to third-party software.
    Update security software.
    Properly configure your security software.
Temporarily disable or uninstall your security software.
Temporarily remove any unnecessary USB devices, leaving only your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, the USB cable that came with your device, and a keyboard and mouse, if necessary.
Restart your computer and try again.

  • Problems downloading larger email attachments over...

I do work on friends/family PCs and I've had a number of cases (on seperate machines) of emails with larger attachments (2mb+) not being downloaded correctly. The POP3 connection either drops before the email is fully downloaded or the email is downloaded, but not removed from the server meaning no other email will come through.
Is this a known issue with BT broadband's email service?

It's Yahoo! alright, and this is not the most serious problem that has occurred. BT's success in getting resolution has been slow and limited. Heaven knows what the service level agreement (if they got one) says.
I'd say not being able to recieve email is a pretty serious problem!
Sorry, clumsy wording. I was referring to the even more serious problem of not being able to connect with BT Yahoo! at all, and didn't intend to belittle your situation. They've had more than enough time to resolve all  the issues.

  • Cannot download web email attachments!

Saturday I installed Leopard as an archive/install on my then-flawlessly running MBP. Since that time I have tried multiple times to download attachments from my gmail accounts (work uses google biz apps), and everytime I try to download anything larger than a small compressed pdf an error pops up and refuses to download it. These are larger .ai files, but still well within normal range of what has been downloaded w/no problem many times before.
It does this no matter if I try to access the files via Firefox 2.0.0.8, Safari 3 or the latest version of Mailplane. This is extremely frustrating for me and if there isn't a fix to this bug soon I'm going to have to reinstall Tiger.
    What can be done?

+an error pops up and refuses to download it.+
Can you be a bit more specific or post a screen shot ?

  • Downloading PDF Email Attachments

I emailed myself a PDF attachment I can view it and dowload it via email but is there a way to save the attachment to the phone or do I have to keep it attached to my email ?

No. You cannot save it. Leave it in your e-mail if you need to save it.

  • Email attachments download as ashx for Microsoft Outlook, instead of jpg, pdf, doc, etc. Tried to fix in Preferences Applications but still doesn't work.

Using MacBook Pro running 10.5.8. Downloaded Firefox 8 on 11/9/11 and now Microsoft Outlook Web App 2010 downloads all email attachments as "attachment.ashx" instead of jpg, pdf, etc. This was not a problem with previous Firefox releases which I've been using for the past couple of years. Can open files if I edit the extension to the proper variety (ashx to jpg for example), but no longer initially automatically opens. Instead I first get a "can't open this file" message.  Attempted to fix in Firefox > Preferences > Applications by indicating the proper "Actions" for various "Content Types" but this had no effect. Chrome and Safari browsers still work properly. How can I fix this?

I'm sorry you are having this problem, here is another post about the same problem, where the cause of the problem is described:

A bug has been filed to track resolution of the issue here, because a true fix isn't yet available:

  • Cannot download email attachments windows 7 lion bootcamp MacBook Pro.

I cannot download or upload email attachments with windows 7 on lion bootcamp. Attached files such as xxx.doc,  yyyy.jpg, or zzz.txt  erroneously try to download as *icloud* and of course fail. By * I mean alphanumeric string. icloud mail tries to download perfectly good files as gibberish. On my mac lion side the mail function works fine. On the bootcamp side all non-icloud mail functions and browser functions work fine. I can easily send, forward, reply to and receive icloud mail. The only thing wrong is that I cannot sucessfully unload or download icloud email attachments.

You will have better exposure for your query in the Boot Camp forum:

  • Why does Reader XI download email attachments to my Download folder before I am able to print them?

After last update my Reader XI automatically downloads email attachments (.pdf) to my Downloads folder. I then have to open that file in order to print it.  Before, the attachment would open in Reader and I could print from that direct.

Windows 8, Firefox email client.  What happens is that I click on attachment links in emails, which are .pdf files.  Instead of a menu allowing opening of the file with Reader, the file gets automatically downloaded to my Downloads folder.  I then have to open that folder, click on the file name... then Reader opens and I can view the file as well as print it from the Reader menu.

    Hi,
I have just got myself a new PC with Windows 7 (64bits). Using IE 8 (32 bit version), I am unable to download emails attachments from my normal Yahoo account ([email protected]). I have read somewhere that this could be due to the fact that Yahoo uses Norton as antivirus scan for email attachments, and that this could clash with BT NetProtectPlus (McAfee under the bonnet). Is there an option I need to switch off (and if so which one / how) in BT NetProtectPlus in order for me to be able to download attachments via Yahoo mail ?
Please note that this used to work on my previous PC (Windowx XP).
Thanks for your help. This is getting really frustrating !
    Hi. Welcome to the forums.
To be honest, there would not really be a clash between the products you've mentioned, because the online system using Norton is a server system and actioned before any download. There is possibly an option in BTNetprotect for "email scanning" or similar. This option can be turned off in the general case, since disk writes are covered anyway,
Have you tried another browser (e.g. Firefox, Opera or Safari) to see if the same conditions exist ?
Is there any particular error message or delay you are seeing ?

Why do I sometimes receive email attachments in the body of the email and how can I download and print from there?

To save attachments, a couple of options include: (1) control-click on attachment, select "Save Attachment...", (2)  Click on "Show Details" in the upper right corner of the message, which then gives you some attachment functions including "Save".

  • BESX SP3 MR6 - Email attachments are now ALWAYS Auto-download - not good with duplicate attachment names

Does anybody else see where email attachments are now always auto-download on all devices. The policy option was phased out in 5.0 but the default at that time was no (to auto-download). Now they all auto-download.
    1. PDF will not display because they must stay as attachment to render on Blackberry device. Says
“This attachment type cannot be viewed on your device”
    2. Phone messages attached as voicemail.wav - first one works, but since no longer the "Preview" option second says "Fielname exists - Rename?" Some devcies you can save and go back - others you can't.

Surely there's an expert on this forum who can help?

  • Name/type of downloaded email attachments is changed to attachment.ashx or something similar

I access an email account at the site below which provides Microsoft Outlook Web access. Since the last Firefox update to version 8.0, the true name/type of email attachments that I download is changed to attachment.ashx (or attachment1.ashx etc if there are several downloaded files. This is very inconvenient. Note that the problem does not exist when downloading attachments from aol.com. There is also no problem when I use IE as browser. Version/system details below are correct.

Outlook Web Access sends an illegal Content-Dispositon header to Firefox. This is no longer allowed in Firefox 8. Firefox 9 will have a workaround for this so that Microsoft has time to fix their software.<br>

  • Yosemite Download conflict with Chrome and all email attachments

Since downloading Yosemite to my 2009 iMac, when pressing insert attachment using Google, Outlook or Yahoo mail, the dropdown menu of files won't close and blocks the email send button.  I have to shut down Google chrome and then reopen it and log back into my email draft. Anyone else have this problem or know how to fix it?

Ive noticed this too and find it to be inconsistent even. I have not figured out the pattern, but sometimes mail automatically downloads all the attachments. Most of the time though it only pulls the first one.
