Limiting which songs the iTunes Genius references

Two related questions about iTunes and "Genius":
First, how do I restrict which songs get shuffled in the Genius Playlist (left hand pane of iTunes, under Playlists). The "iTunes DJ" lets me pick a playlist (I use one with 4+ Stars) as a source, but the Genius seems to occasionally go for really deep cuts. Is there some rhyme or reason to what it pics out of my iTunes library?
Second, how do I limit which songs in my iTunes library from the "Genius Just For You" pool of songs (right hand pane of iTunes)? Every year in December I buy some Christmas songs for the kids but I have no use for those the other 11 months of the year. Even though they are all unchecked, the "Genius Just For You" insists on recommending Christmas songs in July.

Nope, not listening to Christmas music in July, LOL!
I thought I figured out, for example, playing Bruce Springsteen's "Rosalita" or Tom Petty's "Breakdown" would trigger the Christmas songs purchase recommendation in the Genius Sidebar (on the right) since I have Christmas songs from both artists, but now I can't recreate it. I also tested the "Genius sidebar could not find matches for your specific selection" lists, but its not there either. Strange...
As for the Genius playlist, I looked a lot harder at the matches and I guess they make more sense than I originally thought. Not that one song is necessarily like another in the playlist, but there is a general theme (fairly repeatable on both iTunes and on my iPhone OBTW) for all the songs in the list. I guess I just have some really deep cuts and eclectic tastes, it probably makes picking a list more challenging than the average iTunes library. LOL!
Thanks again, I appreciate the response.

I know this email is confusing and really hard to understand...perhaps now you will know how i've been feeling--lost and confused with all the mis-information, with a hit and miss phone, and out of time with all the 1 1/2 hr to 2 hrs EACH wasted on this issue.
On top of all this, I can't even find out how to file a complaint with anyone higher up than Customer Service.
I hate to tell you this, but you didn't write an email. You wrote a discussion post on the Verizon Wireless Community forum which is a public peer to peer forum. Unfortunately since you didn't mark your post as a question, the VZW reps that roam this community won't ever see your post. Before you re-post it, don't. Duplicate posts get removed from the community.
I see there were several missteps both by the reps and yourself in your post. First you should have insisted on returning the phone within the 14 day return policy period. Second which Samsung Galaxy mini model did you purchase? The S3 mini or the S4 mini? Did you do any research prior to deciding on this device. The reps at that time deflected the easiest course of action, by trying to get you to replace the phone under insurance instead of returning the phone. The Early Edge payment option requires the current phone on the line using the early Edge must be returned to Verizon Wireless. Did you once considered going to a third party site like Swappa to purchase a gently used device for your daughter?

I know this doesn't help you Bud, but I've had this issue for at least the last couple of versions.  If I can ask, what is you enviornment like?  Local PC only, libray saved on another PC/Server?
In my case my library is on Windows 2003 server with the share mapped to drive M:  This has worked for many years through both XP and Windows 7 until and update a while ago.

  • Any app to compare which songs on Itunes vs my hard drive

I wonder if there is an application that will tell me which songs are stored in my Itunes, thus in my Ipod, and which are left unloaded in the hard drive (My Music) of my Mac?
I don't know if I'm very clear, but I have hundreds of songs in my hard drive and once in a while I refresh, so to speak, the list of songs in my Itunes. Yet, there is a time when even I can't determine how many or which songs are left behind, not loaded into Itunes.
Is there something that works like a Finder with twin windows that show which songs are in Itunes and which are not "checked"(?) or not loaded into Itunes?
    Thank you.

  • Limited purchase from the iTunes Store available to SA Apple users

I live in South Africa and the iTunes store only allows (limited) App purchases - no books or music. Can Apple or anyone advise why this is so and is the situation likely to change. Many thanks.

Thanks for your response. But I don't think this is quite correct. I have an Amazon account and have full access to their stock, including a vast collection (probabaly all) of their Kindle books - here I have no problem whatsoever purchasing the latest Kindle e-book best sellers, reference books etc. as well as downloadable software. However, the SA iTunes store does NOT offer one book for sale.
I have noted other posts on this site with a number of people offering an opinion. How can we get Apple to provide a proper answer. We afterall still Apple customers albeit somewhat neglected - maybe a large part of the problem is that Apple itself does not have a presence in SA.

  • Which songs are missing Genius data

I've tried all the recommended tricks to update Genius data for my songs.  Some songs simply don't have "enough related songs to create Genius Playlist.". Is there a way to create a Smart Playlist that only has songs missing Genius data?  Maybe then I could see if there was a pattern to the songs missing data.  At the very least, I could start creating some playlists with other "known" songs to build up some Genius data.

This script will search a selected playlist for all tracks that do not contain lyrics and copy them to a playlist it will create called "No Lyrics". Includes a second script to clear the "No Lyrics" playlist of tracks with lyrics. http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=nolyricstoplaylist

When I try to purchase songs in the ITune Store a message pops up and says my session is timed out and to make sure my network settings are correct.

  • Looking for alternatives to the iTunes genius bar

So since the new itunes removed the genius bar, which I had used regularly to find similar songs to ones I owned, does anybody know of an alternative of some sort. Beside Pandora as well

Microsoft has two applications for backing up and restoring data. These applications are:
Client-Based ; Windows Server Backup (in Windows Server 2008/2008 R2/2012) and Windows Backup and Restore (in Windows 7/8): These applications are client-base. They can only back up the systems that are installed on them. The storage capabilities
of these apps are limited (for example, they cannot back up to tape or to cloud).
Data Protection Manager (now in 2012 edition): DPM is a full feature, enterprise-class backup solution. It supports tapes for backup storage and now in DPM 2012 SP1, it can store backups to Windows Azure (cloud), as well.
    Hope this helps you!

  • Is there any way to see which songs in itunes are linked to an itunes account as a group.

Ok, I know if you view the info on a song you can see if it is tied to a account.  I'm wondering if there is a way to see them in a group or have it pulled up uner the view opitions.

I agree that it seems crazy that this can't be done on an iPhone.
Here is the best work around I have found so far.
(It's much quicker and easier to do than to describe.)
In outline, you make an elementary Automator patch
that uses your playlist folder to create a hard coded playlist on iTunes
then just sync across to your iPhone.
1/ Run Automator on your Mac.
2/ In the Automator library select 'Music'.
3/ Under Actions for 'Music' select "Get specified iTunes items" and drag this into the workflow area.
4/ Using the  "Get specified iTunes items" widget  in the workflow area, press the "add" button.
5/ This allows you to choose from a menu that will include your playlist folder.
6/ Now under Actions for Music select "Add songs to playlist" and drag this into the workflow area
so that the results of the first widget will feed into it.
7/ In the  "Add songs to playlist" widget choose "New playlist". Then enter any name for your new playlist.
8/ Run the patch (takes a fraction of a second).
9/ Sync generated playlist to iphone.
    Job done.

  • HT2305 I am currently using a PC and it wont update which means the itunes I am using on my comuter is not up to date. How can I update it? do I have to uninstall and install it again?

Today when I recieved my new phone I realized I needed to back the older one up so I tried and failed when my computer said that my Itunes was out of date so I went on itunes to find out that I have no idea how to just update itunes with out uninstalling it. does anyone know how?

What do you mean it "won't update"?  That is extremely vague and frankly a useless statement.
What happens when you try to update iTunes?  Any errors?
There is no reason to uninstall.
If you want, you can always download and install the latest version from Apple's website, that is essentially all the update does anyways.

  • How do I set up my iTunes Genius to play selections from all, not just some, of my songs in my currently playing playlist?

Last night, when I played my playlist songs with iTunes Genius, my iTunes, with one of my playlists selected, and set on "Shuffle On," "Genius Shuffle On, "Genius On," "Match On," and "Play," played selections from all of my songs in my playlist. Today, my iTunes Genius went back to the same problem it was giving me before last night. My iTunes Genius has been playing selections from just a few of my playlist albums. How do I set up my iTunes Genius to play selections from all, not just some, of my songs in my currently playing playlist?

  • How can I relink my missing songs in iTunes?

    Hi,
I´m a bit panicking since now 1000 songs on my iTunes library aren´t being located by my iTunes... What happened is that I had to reinstall my MacBook Pro after it crashed, and my network drive failed, so no possibility of Timemachining it. Fortunately I had a second manual copy of all my data on another external hard drive, but here´s the problem:
Even though I did all right when switching from PC to Mac a while ago with iTunes (did consolidate library and allowed iTunes to keep it organized), it turns that I now have two folders for my music, on iTunes Media and iTunes Music, and my music library split in both.
I have copied all files from Music to Media, and tried to let iTunes find other missing links in the same folder (Media), but it doesn´t seem to work - it never finds them, even though they´re there, and in theory, in the same config that they were in the Music folder (as this one appears to be also organized). Tried to reboot library with option-down, and unchecking both keep it organized and copy files, but nothing worked. Also tried to have iTunes looking at the Music folder for the library, but this way it wouldn´t find the songs either.
I did edit the iTunes Library xml file, and replace all iTunes%20Music for iTunes%Media, in the hope that´ll fix it, but somehow, even Dreamweaver finds and replaces all, and I save the file, every time I open the xml again it does appear as unchanged (that´s to say, still with the iTunes%20Music references).
Can you please help me? The thought of having to manually locate 1000 songs keeps me awake at night...
    Thanks!!!

Look at the FAQ here http://www.apple.com/itunes/content-providers/music-faq.html  consider the "aggregators" they will assist with the process for a fee.

  • Error message - "The iTunes Library.itl could not be read because it was

created by a newer version of iTunes."
I was having problems with iTunes so I uninstalled it and then reinstalled it by running an iTunesSetUp.exe, which reinstalled the iTunes version 6.0.4. I now however am getting the error message mentioned above.
I tried copying my library (with songs) to my desktop and also moved the library.itl file, then tried to reopen itunes, but still get the same message.
Can anyone help me please?????. Many thanks.

Are you sure you want to use such an out of date version of iTunes?
You can install the latest version from the Apple site:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
If you must use the old version you will have to recreate your library.
    Close iTunes
Drag both iTunes Library.itl and iTunes Music library.xml to the desktop.
Open iTunes - this should create an empty library.
You could try recreating your library by using File>>Import to import iTunes Music Library.xml although I am not certain that this will work with such an old version, you didn't say which version you were using before.
Otherwise, if that doesn't work, you can add your iTunes Music folder with File>>Add folder to Library.

  • The iTunes Library file cannot be saved A duplicate file name was specified

I keep my music and my library file on an external drive. I've been having this error whenever I try to download the updates for my iphone apps, and then after it's popped up once, it continues. After I quit the app, when I try to restart iTunes it won't open because of an unknown error 13014. If I trash the itunes genius and extras files, I can get iTunes to open again, but then I'm back to the library file cannot be saved problem.

    I found the solution:
first you have to locate your last library file, you can do this by clicking Edit-preferences-advanced. it will show you the itunes media folder location. then close Itunes
open your folder and locate the last library (libraries are saved with date names, find the most recent one or the one that was last modified).
change the name of the library to today´s date following the format it already has. you will have to change the name for libraries: .itl, .xml, genius and extras.
once you have changed the name to today´s date on the 4 libraries you will have to delete all other libraries existing on the same folder or on a folder named "previous itunes libraries". it is also recommended to delete the itunes "preferences file" .dat (usually 1kb) and the "sentinel" file.
so, you will have on your itunes media folder only 4 libraries: .itl .xml genius and extras.
the next step is to click the itunes icon holding the "shift" key . itunes will ask you to either "quit, choose library or create library" click on choose library. then locate the library you just renamed with today´s date and extension .itl
done, itunes will open with the last saved version of your library. keep in mind that some changes or songs will not be present if you added any while getting the error "itunes cannot save the library file. a duplicate name has been specified" just locate the songs and add them again, if you have the option "copy files to itunes media folder when adding to library" checked. then go to file-add folder or file-and locate the songs missing on the itunes media folder.itunes saves the files on the hard drive but does not save the changes on the library.
    hope this is clear enough.
