Limits on clip name lengths on log and import?

Hi,
I just arrived back from vacation where I had shot quite a number of AVCHD files on my Sony HDR-SR12E (all in the same quality and resolution), plugged in the camera to my Mac, launched FCE, started the Log and Import and proceeded to name each of the clips in the queue something that I could use to easily identify them.
I came back after letting the queue import for a while and noticed that some of the clips were failing to import and hovering the cursor over the queue status flag simply popped up with 'Error: Unknown'.
I repeated the import on some of the small filler clips and it seemed to fail right at the end.
I then removed the clips from the queue, shortened the name and added them to the queue and so far they all seem to be importing correctly.
I didn't have any punctuation characters in the name, sure some had a few spaces but no more than any of the others.
Does anyone know of any naming limitations when importing like this..?
Regards,
-Andy

I didn't have any punctuation characters in the name, sure some had a few spaces but no more >than any of the others.
When naming files as you mention punctuation characters are best avoided.
Also parentheses, brackets, quotation marks and operators.
Spaces can cause trouble and the underscore (_) is a better option than a space.
I suspect one of the above characters to be at the bottom of your file naming drama.

  • Whole clips not tranfering from log and transfer into FCP studio 2

720p 24p clips from P2 get cut short when transfered from log and transfer. I can play the whole clips in the log and transfer window to verify they are there but once they are brought into my project they play about half way through, then the sound drops out and the clip stops short of where it really ended. the clips in the canvas window or on the timeline when played all the way to the end are not the complete original clip? i have tried switching every setting i can think of but to no avail. any ideas out there? thanks a million

no, no in or out points set in log and capture. what's wierd is that clips shot at 24 fps are the ones running short and clips shot at 60 fps come in fine (the slow motion isn't happening but i think i can change that with cinema tools?) anyway, thanks for the suggestion

  • I have footage shot on a p2 camera, why won't all of the clips transfer when using Log and Transfer?

Only about 60% of the clips transferred over or was shown in the Log and Transfer window.

Offload the cards...back them up.  That is priority #1.  Do that first...then return the camera.  Then try mucking about with this.
Back up the ENTIRE card structure.

  • Same clip, different lengths in CS3 and CS4?

I'm trying to fix a problem I'm having importing my CS3 project into CS4 and I noticed that the clip lengths in the properties windows do not match for my files. For example, if I open my clip in CS3 (where it was originally edited) it shows it this:
    File Path: F:TapesTape 24Scene 018 - Ally & Paul Coffee (9).m2t
    Type: MPEG Movie
    File Size: 365.4 MB
    Image Size: 1440 x 1080
    Pixel Depth: 1440
    Frame Rate: 29.97
Source Audio Format: 48000 Hz - compressed - Stereo
Project Audio Format: 48000 Hz - 32 bit floating point - Stereo
    Total Duration: 00;01;54;14
Average Data Rate: 3.2 MB / second
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: 1.333
But in CS4 the properties show up as this:
    File Path: F:TapesTape 24Scene 018 - Ally & Paul Coffee (9).m2t
    Type: MPEG Movie
    File Size: 365.4 MB
    Image Size: 1440 x 1080
    Pixel Depth: 32
    Frame Rate: 29.97
Source Audio Format: 48000 Hz - compressed - Stereo
Project Audio Format: 48000 Hz - 32 bit floating point - Stereo
    Total Duration: 00;01;53;08
Average Data Rate: 3.2 MB / second
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: 1.3333
What would cause this discrepancy? I shot at 30f on a Canon XH-A1. My project settings in CS4 are HDV 1080p30. Do I have the wrong settings? How could the same clip be of two different lengths. I'm so confused!
Please respond only if you have a suggestion. I am not looking for comments about how I shouldn't switch programs midstream. I would like some honest help, however!
    Thanks!

    I've got a couple suggestions.
First would be to see if its a problem with the import or a just a difference in how CS3 and CS4 reads the files. If you import one of .m2t files directly into CS4 and not through importing the project, does it give you the same info as you listed above? (I'm assuming the file info above was derived from importing the project and then looking at the file's info.) If it is correct when independently brought into premiere, then the problem lies with importing a CS3 project and I would suggest trying to unlink then link your media. If there is no difference, then it's something else.
Second suggestion is to export an EDL out of CS3. Then, instead of importing your CS3 project into CS4, import the EDL and see if this resolves your edit points.
One note I've noticed with the EDL's in premiere, they don't import well when generated in framecount mode, but work fine in timecode mode (in CS3 this is just what your timeline time indicator mode is set at, right click the time indicator and set it to Timecode. in CS4 this doesn't work and you have to set the Display Format to Timecode under your Project Settings.)
    Good luck.

  • Change schema name without doing export and import

No problem at ur side .
There is no Executable Java file  in the EJB  . It will show like this for EJB applications  .  Don't worry about this . Just deploy  .

  • Canon Vixia HF M31 Log and Capture

I would like to log and capture in FCP 7 with my Canon Vixia HF M31. It is USB connection only. I am able to Log and Transfer clips, but like to log and import to FCP 7 as I shoot, so Log and Capture.  Any ideas on the settings, or if this is even possible? Thx

You cannot live capture with that camera...this won't work over USB.

  • Font name length limitation...

    Hello all,
I have a serious problem related with .PFB font files. Is there any relation between font name length; I checked and if font name length is more than 30 characters I am getting an error that "the requested file C:\....\....Pfm,C:\....\....Pfb was not a valid font file". Although I am using the same way to install all fonts.
Please help me and give me any solution. Please let me know if there any limitation with windows XP, or its a limitation of Type 1 fonts.
Thanks in advance and pardon my English.
    Thanks........

I believe the answer is "both" for practical purposes. Although, my recollection would have been that the limit was 31 characters, not 30.
    Regards,

  • Log and transfer clip setting over clip #100 +

When I selected all clips on log and transfer, they stop at Clip #99. It could not transfer more than #100. I had to rename to a, b, c, etc. Is there any preferance settings to accept over #100? I want to keep them in order.

All cards start with #1? I don't see "#1" anywhere.
I see the clip names, like 0001MS, 0002Z8 and so on. And VOLUME NAME is the name of the card or name of the folder you put the card in. The second card MIGHT start again with 0001, but have another code, like "0001GU, 0002B2" and so on. Because that it the first one on that card. IF a shot spanned from one card to the next, the number scheme would continue, like you are seeing. 0057HW, 0058J9, something to that effect.
This is the way P2 names clips, and there is nothing you can do to change this. Import them, and then rename them...fine.
Are you saying that it can't go beyond shot 100? 0100YU, but no 0101IK? P2 can go to 999.

  • My Logic file name length changed

For some reason, Logic started limiting my file name lengths to 31 characters.  This was never an issue before.  I could always use much longer names.  About a week ago, for no apparent reason, it started limiting the length and truncating the names to only 31 characters. Anyone know if this is a bug or is there a setting somewhere that i don't know about.   I'm on OSX 10.6.8.  There is no problem with creating long file names outside of Logic 9.0.0

This has always been so in Logic. It never suddenly "started"...
But it was fixed in version 9.1.0, which came out
    almost three years ago
and is a free update for every LP 9 owner...
You really should update, there's no reason not to. If you're on a PPC (G4 or G5), you can only go to 9.0.2 (still worth it), if on an Intel Mac (2006 and later), you can go to 9.1.8; this will improve things for you, and also end the 31 charachter limit, which was an atavism.

  • ExtendScript in PPro : Clip-names

Using ExtendScript, I am trying to access the clip-names of a track, and I can't figure out how to do this.
Here is what I am trying:
    app.project.activeSequence.videoTracks[0].clips[0]
    Result: [object TrackItem]
    app.project.activeSequence.videoTracks[0].clips[0].name
    Result: undefined
    app.project.activeSequence.videoTracks[0].clips[0].reflect.properties
    Result: duration,start,end,type,mediaType,__proto__
    app.project.activeSequence.videoTracks[0].clips[0].__proto__.reflect.properties
    Result: __proto__,__count__,__class__,reflect
    app.project.activeSequence.videoTracks[0].clips[0].__proto__.__proto__.reflect.properties
    app.project.activeSequence.videoTracks[0].clips[0].reflect.methods
    Result: bind,unbind,setTimeout
    What am I missing?
    The context is:
We have a process in the studio, in which we use a track with clips representing the shot-names and their duration on the timeline.
We use this information later to insert the duration of the shots to our pipeline's database, as well as extract audio files for each shot, to be inserted to 3dsmax for lip-sync purposes.
Our current process involves exporting an EDL and then processing it externally.
This has some issues we want to avoid, so I want to have this process happen within a custom-tool inside PPro.

There's no supported API that will provide those clip names, today.
You could save out the FCP XML for that sequence, and parse that.
Please write me directly [ b b b at adobe dot com], with an overview of what you'd like to accomplish, and I can provide better guidance.

  • Log and Transfer: DVD-RAM vs DVD-RW

I recently installed Final Cut Express 4 on my Macbook and I am using a Panasonic AVCHD camera to transfer footage. When I used a DVD-RAM disc the data appeared in the Log and Transfer window with no problems, however I have footage on a DVD-RW disc which I want to transfer. (Despite being RW it won't let me delete footage through my camera) My DVD-RW disc has been finalized and when I plug in my camera it shows the loading color wheel, but no film clips appear in the log and transfer. I look in the actual disc window and all the files for my clips are there, but it doesnt recognize them in log and transfer. Is there some reason that Final Cut Express 4 will only notice DVD-RAM discs?

Is Toast 7 a method of making disk image(s) or
DVD(s), or are we talking about several different
    things here?
YES. IT IS AN ALTERNATIVE TO IDVD.
Also, the reason I bought +RW disks and TWO of them
at that is that it seems ANYTHING I do needs to be
done about ten times to be right ONE time (hence five
days to get titles that play the way I want) and the
thought of a "write-once" disk scares me.
SO IF YOU MAKE DISK IMAGES FIRST YOU DON'T BURN ANYTHING AND CAN TEST IT OUT FIRST.
You know that song, "Mamma's Going to Buy You a
Mockingbird"? If this doesn't work, then that, if
that doesn't work, the next, and so on.
YOU WOULD BE BETTER OFF LEARNING A BIT MORE SEE THE PRECEDING POST
If the +RW disk won't play in my VCR
A DVD CANNOT PLAY IN A VCR
    I will try
playing it on my combo drive in my Mac. If it plays,
I'll see if there's a way to connect the VCR to the
Mac and copy it to videotape from that so I can
finish the rest of the project!
YOU CAN'T UNLESS YOU CAN FIGURE OUT YOUR CANOPUS BOX BETTER THAN SO FAR
    (The reason I don't
go direct from the Mac to the VCR, besides the
generational loss of digital to tape, is that I want
the opening titles at the beginning, the middle title
in the middle, the closing titles at the end, and the
outtakes after that, and if I have to string them all
together into ONE project I don't see HOW I can put
them where I want on the tape without a DVD I can
    start and stop!)
YOU COULD MAKE ON IMOVIE PROJECT THAT WOULD DO THIS, OR SEPARATE ONES, AND USE MULTIPLE CLIPS IN IDVD, BUT HEY YOU'VE BEEN TOLD THAT AND WON'T LISTEN, SO GOOD LUCK.
If that won't work, I'll copy it
either from the +RW disk or (if I dare!) directly
from whatever format seems best to a -R disk my
friend gave me. If none of these work, then I panic.

  • P2 Log and Transfer Problem

I'm trying to import footage shot with these specs: (with FCP 7)
    Panasonic P2
    720p (960x720)
    25 FPS
    DVCPRO 720/25p codec
The clips open ok with log and transfer, but once they are transfered the footage has the following errors:
    - Playback rate is wrong. Everything plays back at half speed.
    - Audio drops out at exactly 2 seconds and 9 frames on every clip.
I tested a clip shot on the same camera in a different format (720/25PN camera native codec) and it transfered fine. No problems at all.
The error only happens with footage shot in 720/25P (DVCPRO).
Does anyone know what is going on with this?
    Thanks

In the P2 Browser, there is a little sprocket drop down menu. Click on that and choose PREFERENCES. Uncheck REMOVE PULLDOWN and then try importing again.

  • Log and Transfer - loss of preview window

I have managed to make the preview pane in the Log and Transfer window disappear and I can't work out how to get it back.
To expand the left hand side of the L and T window I dragged the right-hand side divider towards the preview pane. As the divider started to overlap the preview area the pane disappeared never to return even though I have tried dragging the divider back again from the right side of the L and T window.
Does anyone know how to get it back?
    Thank you.
    John

    Thank you.
I know what you mean and can see the Logging and Import Settings boxes you describe in FCP running on a different machine but on my Macbook the whole right hand side of the L&T window has gone, including all the logging data entry places below the preview area.
If you wanted to mimic this try dragging to the right the divider between the list of clips on the L&T window's left side and the logging area on the right. You will see the preview window and logging area disappear before you've dragged very far. If you let go of the mouse button at this point they seem to disappear for good, or at least as far as I can tell. I don't recommend letting go though as I can't find any handle to grab so I can't find or drag the divider back to the left to reinstate them.
