Line 21 CC in DVD Studio Pro...is there a way to simulate before burn?

Hey all I had a question about closed captioning for a DVD I am producing for a client. We had some TV Spots closed captioned and now the client wants these closed captioned videos on a playable DVD, so they can share them with others (not for broadcast purposes). Our company sent out to get the CC done and they sent as back an .mov that has CC and an .scc file to be used in DVD Studio Pro. I imported the .mov into DVD SP as my asset and on the track timeline i right clicked and added the Line 21 file. But I was wondering if there is any way to check and test to see if this works before I actually burn a dvd. I want to make sure the CC is synced up and working before i start burning 200 copies of this thing and it's important to the client that the CC is working. Does anyone know how to simulate the CC or Subtitles for a Line 21 file?
-Mike

You DO NOT need to burn a copy of the DVD just to test it.
BTW - If the MOV file has the cc already inserted, you may not need to use the .scc file..
1. Leave the scc file out of the project and simply BUILD the DVD to you HDD. Use DVD Player to test the DVD build with Closed Captions turned on. In DVD Player v5, the option is under the "Features" menu. In DVD Player v4, the option is under the "Controls" menu.
If the captions were encoded properly in the mov file, then they should now be displayed by DVD Player.
2. Using Compressor, create m2v & ac3 files from the mov, and use those for the Track in DVDSP. Build the DVD, and test for cc as outlined previously.
3. If you still don't have cc displayed, attach the scc file to the track, build the DVD (using m2v/ac3 files) and test with DVD Player.
The cc should be displayed in DVD Player unless there was a problem with the scc file, which should have resulted in an error/warning message in the build log.
I highly recommend using files generated by Compressor, as (in my experience) audio will badly drift when mov files are converted to DVD mpeg2 format in DVDSP. Besides, you will have much more control of the conversion, and better results from compressor generated files. Also, a rebuild with m2v/ac3 files will only take a couple minutes as opposed to several hours when using an mov.
Good luck

  • DVD Studio Pro 4 doesn't see my dual layer burner

Not too long ago, I upgraded my superdrive to the MCE 16X DVD-/+R drive with double layer support. Now, when I try to burn to DVD Studio Pro 4, the drive is not listed as an output option. The only thing listed are my hard drives. Allegedly, this drive is supposed to have native support with both DVD Studio Pro 4 and Tiger. Short of taking out this drive and putting the single layer drive back in, does anyone have a suggestion?
By the way, it WILL burn CDs in ITunes...

Don't know much about the burner, but can you can use Toast or Disk Utility as mentioned in may threads involving alternative burning outside of DVDSP?
If so then there ya go but if not then back to single-layer I guess.

  • Text Line Spacing Capabilities for DVD Studio Pro 4

Would anyone know if it is possible to set tect spacing at 1.5, rather than just single or double line spacing (by hitting the return button)?

text formatting is very basic in DVDSP
as a quick adjustment for a small amount of text, I type in two separate pieces of text, one for each line, then move the second text down as needed

  • FCP to DVD Studio Pro exporting help needed - desperatey......

    Hi.
Please help me if you can.
I am exporting a Quicktime movie from FCP for DVD Studio Pro 4. I chose the MPEG 4 option in the compression, make it best quality and bounce it. But when I look at the self-contained mov file, every time a person walks across the screen I am getting little lines on the light parts of the screen or a beating or sizzling effect in the dark parts. Basically it looks like everything is "alive" somewhat - objects like curtains seem to sizzle.
Can someone guide me in the proper choices to make when exporting from FCP to import into DVD Studio Pro? There is not an MPEG-2 or M2V option, and the MPEG compression breaks it down to MPEG-2 or M2v upon import into DVD Studio Pro anyway.
I guess I don't know how to get the best quality bounce from FCP, in order to have a file that is less that 4G in size. Can someone please advise?
There are no directions on exporting FOR DVD Studio Pro in the Final Cut books, nor was there a FCP prep covered in the DVD SP books.

Quick workflow from FCP -> DVDSP:
In FCP, File Export QuickTime Movie
Select DVD Studio Pro Markers in the Markers drop-down (leave other settings as is)
Save QT Movie to your preferred location
In DVDSP, import your newly-created QT Movie
(You may want to confirm your encoding settings - both in terms of bit rate and whether
you're encoding on build or have background coding enabled - prior to this step though)
    Best Quality workflow:
In FCP, trash the render files for your sequence
From the Menu, File Export Using Compressor
Now, in Compressor, select the appropriate preset(s): DVD: Best Quality 90 Minutes - 4:3
Optional: Delete the AIFF setting completely
    Select the appropriate destination(s)
Optional: For the Dolby preset, alter Dialog Normalization (under the Audio tab of the Inspector) to -31. In the Preprocessing tab, alter the Compression Preset to None
    Click Submit
Once the encode is done, import the .m2v and .ac3 (and/or .aiff) files into DVDSP
It's only fair to tell you that since this produces (pretty much) the best possible quality from Compressor, it may take as much as 5x-10x as long as the 'quick workflow' detailed earlier. (Especially if you've set DVDSP to do a one-pass encode)

  • Subtitle timecode offset in dvd studio pro

I have a TXT file (write in stl language) with timecode in and out and relative subtitle...
But the txt file have the TC reference of a original Beta timecode... so Begin at 01:01:00:00
when I import my txt file in dvd studio all the subtitle are offset foraward because the MPG2 file begin at 00:00:00:00
I use time code offset and set in timeline Assettimecode but I have not result...
I write in the txt file the line $tapeoffset = true
but dvd studio pro don't import the file whit this string...
    Please Help ME...

    Welcome to the forums, Marco.
If the MPEG2 file starts at 00:00:00:00 and your subtitle file assumes a 01:00:00:00 start, and none of the other things you tried are working offset-wise, I would say to just edit your STL so that you change the leading 01: to an 00:
The way I would do this is with Bare Bones's TextWrangler (free) and do a search and replace. You would search for "\r01:" and replace with "\r00:", then search for "\r02:" and replace with "\r01:" (assuming it's not longer than 2 hrs).
The "\r" will only search for numbers preceded by a carriage return, so it'll only change the first number in the timecode and leave any others alone.

  • Upgrade dvd studio pro 3.0---- 3.02

I bought DVD Studio Pro 3.0 on eBay and tried updating to version 3.02 from the Apple download site. They asked for the serial number, which I gave (registration?). However, no more action was seen, I was left with a blank screen with "thank you" on top. What went wrong?

The solution is always simple (most cases).
After closing the "Thank you" screen, I started up the application dvd studio pro 3 and asked for updates. This time all available updates came up, the latest iTunes, dvd studio pro 3.02 and compressor update. Before registration only the iTunes update was displayed.
General clue: update is not directed from the download side. That's why, I think, there is a notation "form" in place. I guess this means "registration form". Your suggestion was in a way helpful, thank you.
How about registration? When I'm going to sell dvd studio pro 3 in the future, is the update 3.02 still available to a new buyer?

  • Aperture stills importing to DVD Studio Pro

apart from loading all my aperture library into iPhoto (and that generates loads of extra files on the drive), is there a way to import stills from Aperture into DVD Studio Pro? There seems to be an iphoto or a file browser input but nothing from Aperture. Any ideas folks?

Have you tried dragging the folder of stills from the finder into the DVDSP assets tab?

  • How can i get a video file with subtitle out of DVD Studio Pro?

i got a project for a dvd in dvd studio pro. There are subtitles which i created within dvd studio pro.
Now i want make a web version of the video with the subtitle, how can i get to this?

    Hi Mr. Cutter,
There is an app called "D-Subtitler for Mac" (as well as several others)
which should allow you to extract the subtitles from a copy of the
finished dvd and use them otherwise.
It's been awhile since I had to do it but it is a fairly common need
    so the software exists.

  • Is DVD Studio Pro 4 compatible with Snow Leopard 10.6.8?

Is DVD Studio Pro 4 compatible with Snow Leopard? Project burns fine, simulates fine, works on my two macs (mac pro & macbook pro networked) but when I put the dvd in to a dvd played hooked to a tv it doesn't recoginize it and says "this disc connot be played"!

It's your set top DVD player that won't play the disk...  That or it's the type of disk that you're using.
    Make sure it's a DVD-R.  That's a MINUS.
They pretty much work in all set top DVD players.
The reason your computers play the dvd's is simply because your computer knows what to do with all types of media.  Something else to consider could be the optical read capability on your computer is better than that of your DVD player.  Perhaps the DVD is a poor quality disk.  You computer can read it because it has a higher quality optical pickup unit.
First things first, take your DVD to a place that sells DVD players and try it in a new player.  That'll tell you whether or not the disk actually works.

  • CD ROM content in DVD Studio Pro

    Hi.
Does anyone know if it's possible to include content from a CD ROM created in Director in a DVD to be created in DVD Studio Pro? There's all the usual stuff -
    - an .exe file
    - a folder called DATA with all the images, sounds and video content in it
    - a load of dxr files, which (I think) represent the pages of the CD ROM
I know I'll be able to get the job done by recreating the CD ROM functionality using DVD Studio, but if there's a way to do this more quickly, I'd obviously prefer that.
    cheers...

you can include it on the rom side of the disc.

  • DVD-RW or +RW with DVD Studio Pro 2

Is it possible to burn DVD-RW or +RW disks with DVDSP2? I have new G5 (16x SuperDrive double-layer (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)) and one +RW disk which is empty but I can't burn to it. It gives an error message saying "Insert an empty DVD-R disk.
And if it is somehow possible, how can I erase disks?

All versions of DVD Studio Pro are rather weak when it comes to burning DVDs. However, instead of burning to a DVD when you build and format your project from DVD SP save the result as an image file to your hard disk. At that point you can either use a third-party program like Roxio's Toast to burn the DVD (using the image file) or you can use Apple's Disk Utility.
I'm running DVD SP v2.0.5 on Mac OS X 10.4.2 and I've burned a good number of DVD-RWs using either Toast or Disk Utility (I've also erased discs using those applications). Toast is the better solution because it allows you to select burn speeds and it also has great underrun prevention (I've never had a failed burn when using Toast with my external Plextor DVD±RW). However, under Tiger you may find that all you need is Apple's Disk Utility.<small><hr width="75%"><small>If this suggestion helps in any way, a confirmation or acknowledgment would be appreciated, since that would also help others who may be having the same difficulty. • Burn in DVD Studio Pro only says Video Bitrate too high

My camera is a Sony Ex1 and I have a 1 hour and 7 minute video that I have sent through Compressor to DVD Studio Pro, which I have done many times before upgrading to FCP 7, and now when I try to build it, it always tells be that the video bitrate is to high. I have gone though preferences and reduced the bitrate to 3 and max 5 and it still does it. I have also made a Quicktime movie and tried to build and burn it in DVD Studio Pro and that does not work either. I have no problem viewing it in DVD Studio Pro when I simulate it.
I would appreciate any help you guy could give me. This is just a hobby, but I have been doing it for over 5 years and have never had this problem.

    Dexil Rold wrote:
When I got DVD Pro 7, I installed 10.6 on a new 1 Tb hard drive and then installed DVD Pro 7, so it was installed on a completely new drive. When I ran my movie through Compressor, I did it two times. One with the DVD 90 Best, one with a suggestion by the new book on Studio Pro 4 (average 4.5 Mbps, Max 7.5 Mbps. I also made a Quicktime Movie. I did have to try several times to get it through Compressor, after hours FCP would quit before it was finished, but I did get it to work
It could be spiking with the 7.5, doubtful, but could be even with AC3 audio.
Try this to see if it works - Export the Final Cut movie as self contained movie (is that what the QuickTime Movie was, the entire timeline self contained?) Sorry I am a bit unclear as to whether you got that to go through Compressor or was it the timeline from FCP, which quit, but successfully went through Compressor. Perhaps it is related to Snow Leopard.
When you look at the build files on your hard drive, is it crashing out at the same point?
Take a look here http://dvdstepbystep.com/vts.php at the image at the bottom, does the build get to the same spot and/or does it throw the error in the log at the same part? Anything else in the log?
Anyway, there would be a few things to try.
I would think the easiest is to
1.) Export a small section of the movie from Final Cut as a self contained movie.
2.) Bring that movie into Compressor and run Compressor on it (including AC3 files) then bring that into DVD SP to see if it builds.
If it does, it would seem to be that there may be a spike causing the error (are you using multiple video streams, subtitles or anything else or is is a straight one video/one audio on the track.)
If that works it would seem to be a spike issue, especially if the error is thrown at the some spot in the building process.
If it gets past that, export the entire timeline and run it through Compressor and see if that works, dial down the top bitrate a bit for the video.
You could also do some other things (make another partition for an install of Leopard, not Snow Leopard, try a new user, etc.) but the above may be the easiest to start with.
When you say it takes hours to send from Final Cut, is that sending from Final Cut to Compressor or Final Cut to a self contained movie? Of course alot of this depends on your Final Cut timeline, codecs, color corrections, renders and the rest, but on a Octo it should not be painfully long for a 1 hour few minutes movie. I ave Final Cut 7 on a laptop and it does a pretty good job speedwise on some HDV timelines, which are a pain to send out. You may want to check things like where you set your scratch disks, when you are putting the media etc. (More as an aside FYI)

  • Export markers from Final Cut Pro X to DVD Studio Pro

    Hello,
After finding out how to create chapters via markers in Final Cut Pro we wonder how to export these markers to DVD Studio Pro without having to create ourselves a .txt file and writing the names and the times of the markers in it to export it to DVD Studio Pro. Isn't there a way to make this happen automatically?
Unfortunately the new version of Final Cut Pro doesn't have an export to Quick Time Player and this is why this kind of solution falls out and we really need to create the markers first in Final Cut Pro and not directly in DVD Studio.
    Is there a solution?
    Thank you.

At present, you cannot add chapter markers in FCP X.
If you send the project to Compressor, you can add chapter markers there, or you can add them in DVD SP.
You can add the chapter markers in Compressor or DVD SP manually, or if you create a text file listing the exact timecode positions (from FCP X storyline) where you want the chapter markers to be (each on a new line) Compressor (or DVD SP) will automatically insert the markers when you point it to the text file.
