Line across bottom of screen

my son's 3 week old macbook pro has a line across the bottom of the screen.  He has not dropped or misused the computer.  It has been sitting on the counter all week because my son went away to camp. It was working fine Saturday morning.  Started last night.

This is a user to user forum.  Contact the store you bought it at immediately and see if they will exchange it.  You are right at the end of many stores exchange period.  Otherwise contact Applecare.  It sounds like a common LCD inverter cable or board problem.

Hello. I'm running Windows 7. A horizontal, flickering band has appeared along the bottom edge of the screen. When it is flickering I see what looks the top of the screen or window. When it settles down, there is just a thin line across the taskbar icons. This happened after I had been playing a computer game, although I doubt that has any bearing. I replaced the LCD assembly 7 months ago because I was having a problem with full-screen flashing/blinking, and the new LCD had no problems. I have tried changing a BIOS settings (enabling/disabling VT-d) but that made no difference. The line is there from the moment of boot-up whenever the screen is on. Do I have a chip going bad? I don't have an external monitor to test this with.

there is no real easy of testing it once you have done the basic diagnostic.

  • 20 inch G5 iMac displaying 1/4 inch blotchy line across bottom of screen

I just noticed a 1/4 inch thick blotchy, somewhat transparent line near the bottom of my screen. A year ago, right after I purchased this computer, I had to have some things replaced because of a thick white line that appeared across the bottom. Is this more of the same?

It's been discussed and locked for a while...

This was endemic on the Rev. A 20" models. I had my screen replaced twice. After the PS, mid-plane and mid-plane went again they sent me a new one with a built in iSight. I suggest you call Apple Care to have them repair it.
    Good luck,

  • HT2807 why is there a horizontal line across my imac screen?

why is there a horizontal line across my imac screen?

Not sure exactly which model your iMac is..?
see > How to identify iMac models
Sadly display lines generally indicate a problem with either the Display or the Graphic's Chip.
To check, take a screen shot of the display using the (Command Shift 3) keys and open it.
If the line is only seen on the Display and not in a screen shot, then it would most likely indicate a Display problem.
If the line shows up in a screen shot, then it would most likely indicate a Graphic's Ciip problem.

  • MacBook Pro (2007) line across bottom 1/4 of screen

    Hi there,
I have a MacBook Pro from 2007 and just recently there has been a line across the bottom 1/4 of the screen that has been flickering. It's now just become a permanent fixture.
Does anyone know how to get rid of it?
I had the graphics card replaced 2 years ago as there was an Apple fault with the card.
Its driving me nuts please help.

Have the graphics chipset (it's not a card--it's soldered to the logic board instead) checked again. There are reports of the Nvidea 8600M GT failing twice.

  • White line across MBP 17" screen

This just stareted happening, and it's getting worse...
From time to time, a thin white line goes across my entire screen, followed by the entire screen below becoming darker than the top part. Also, there are times when the affected part becomes a cascade of thin white lines.
It goes away when I flex the screen, or slightly tap the screen.
I'm taking it to the Apple Store, but I wondere if anyone else has experienced this?
    Thanks in advance,
    Andrew

What white line?? If it goes all the way across you probably have a row of pixels out. I had mine for 3 months when this happened. I had purchased mine from Best Buy with a service plan, and chose to have mine repaired rather than get a "refurbished" replacement. I received a phone call this morning saying that Apple had authorized an exchange for a new ipod, which has just finished synching. Not sure what the qualifications are for getting a brand new replacement like that are, but I think I'll always choose the repair option over exchange - I just lost 3 months wear and tear on my ipod.

  • Ipad mini dispay black line on bottom of screen

ipad mini has blacyk lines on bottom of the screen

Try to reset it. Hold down the sleep and home keys for about 20 seconds. When you see the silver apple, let go and let it reboot and see if that helps. Regardless you should make an appointment at your local apple store and have them check it out, especially if it's still under warranty.

  • Lines across bottom 2/3 of screen

The bottom 2/3 of my screen has lines running across it - one band of horizontal lines and one band of vertical lines. Almost exactly the same as the lines in this image (http://www.appledefects.com/wiki/index.php?title=Image:BandScreen.JPG), except mine has a second band of lines.
I know this problem has been dealt with before, but I haven't found a solid answer (see this discussion: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6698227).
When I twist the screen HARD I can get some of the lines to go away, but they reappear as soon as a stop twisting. I've tried to repair the problems myself by taking apart the display and adding some additional padding in an effort to improve the LVDS cable connection. This hasn't improved the problem at all. I've found information suggesting that the problem is either the logic board, the LCD display itself, or the LVDS cable.
Does anyone know how to tell which part is the source of the problem? I can't afford to have someone else do the repair, but I'm really desperate to have a working computer again.
Thanks so much for any insights you can offer!

  • I am getting a line at bottom of screen about Sync encountering an error. It happens on every page. What's wrong?

the line or bar at the bottom of the screen, each page as it is now, says "Sync encountered an error while syncing: Unknown error. Sync will automatically retry this action. (box with) Sync Now"
I am not aware of any changes that would cause this although I am having a problem with Hotmail in that it is keeping me at some times from emailing or forwarding email content. There was a item sent me that brought up warnings from AVG, WOT and another source but I did not open that email content or at least did not see it open as the warnings caused me to hit the "x" to get off that email.
I am not sure why I use Sync as I have not had problems before or need to check on what it does for me.
The issue with Hotmail is causing me to think more about using Thunderbird but I need to swap contacts and business connections completely at a later time this or next month.

it is a failing GPU (you have a Nividia GPU right), this is a known problem. Probably the person whom had this laptop had this problem too, before he sold it off to you.

  • I have a translucent bar across bottom of screen.  How do I remove?

I have a translucent cloudy looking bar across the bottom of my screen.  How can I remove this?

The dock can be described as a translucent cloudy bar going across the bottom of the iPad and depending upon what your wallpaper is, that could fit your description to a "T". But if this is not the dock bar that you're describing, try a reset.
Hold down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears on the screen.

    guys
would you believe that when i remove my memory card the solid line dissapears and the display is perfect!
but now when i put the memory card back in and switch on the phone, there is no boot up ie i have my white screen with NOKIA and then it just switches off- no matter how many times i try the same thing happens
but when i take the memory card outand switch the phone on again, the phone boots up perfectly
what is going on? is the memory card corrupt? i have only used 500mb out of 8 gigs and the phone is only a few months old. what must i do? should i try formatting the card? or put in a warranty claim for a new memory card as this BS?
    thanks again for your advice
    regards

  • Strange jiggly line at bottom of screen/display

    Hi!
Just got a Lenovo T61 7659/CTO from Ebay, and was v. pleased with it at first, but it's now developed a strange jiggly line at the bottom of the screen where the tast bar is. As I'm not much of a techie, I don't really know if it's a hardware or software issue.
Here's a link to an image of the fault:
    jiggling line
It seems to be constantly bobbing/jiggling, if that's any help. It's also grown over the space of time since I first noticed it. Was very, very fine at first, but has suddenly deteriorated to about 2mm.
Would be very, very grateful for any suggestions as to what's causing this. The laptop is still under warranty, I believe, so am hoping to get it fixed by Lenovo.
Thanks very much in advance for your help.
    Wendy

  • Blank white band across bottom of screen

Sometimes when I turn on my new MacBook there is a thick (more than 1" wide) blank, white band across the bottom of the screen, and the rest of the screen display is squeezed (elongated) into the remaining space. If I then put the MacBook to sleep and wake it up, the screen returns to normal.
Any idea what is going on? And what I should do?
It occurs to me that my MacBook might be "confused" because I sometimes use it with an external monitor and sometimes I don't..... Coudl that be the explanation?
    thanks!
    Peter

I am still having this problem. It especially occurs when I am not connected to my external monitor and running off the battery. Has nobody else had this problem? Does anybody know what the problem is?
    Thanks.

  • IPhone 5 App Store keyboard glitch -- persistent green lines at bottom of screen

I just brought home my new black 32GB iPhone 5 from the Verizon store.  After using it for an hour or so, and switching over to WiFi, I entered my Apple ID password in the App Store to (re)download an app.  My password requires me to switch to the ".?123" keyboard.  The bottom ~1/5 of my screen became fuzzy, as though the keyboard overlay was sticking around longer than it should have.  After a short time, glitch resolved to a state that's been "permanent" - vertical green lines.  These green lines fade in slowly after I wake the screen from sleep.  They've persisted through multiple power off > on cycles, a hard reset, and even through the upgrade to iOS 6.02.  Interestingly, screen captures do not seem to grab these green lines.
Any ideas on how I can fix this, or am I going to have to get the phone replaced?

I think this is normaly. I've had some issues (gone through 6 replacements - not trivial issues, dead home button, dead camera, dead wifi that kind of thing). I noticed this on the 3rd replacement and everyone since. People are claiming that they have received "flawless screens" (whatever that means). I think the Sharp pannels are the ones that don't show these interlacing lines and AU Optronic pannels do. I have experience with AU Optronic pannels and everyone that I have ever owned (Motorola Xoom, PC Monitors, etc...) have done this. It is too bad that Apple settled for this manufacturer, but it is a gamble whether you will get one that doesn't do it. It is normal and within specs as most the iPhones at this point with have AU pannels due to Sharp's shortage.
The geniuses will likely not replace an iPhone for this reason. If you have AppleCare+ and have an incident in the future, perhaps you'll get lucky and get a sharp pannel put on to replace the AU pannel. But, there is no way to know which phones have which pannels.
Interestingly, I checked at the Apple store and 50% of the display models did it, and the genius that I spoke to's iphone 5 did it. You can find wall paper that is alternating black and white lines one pixel in width and it will cause the screen to flicker. Like you, I REALLY wish that apple DID NOT choose AU Optronics and if I had known I would have waited to purchase, but now I have it and cannot return it. I may sell it and move back to my previous phone. Given that the #1 selling feature is the retina display, it is disappointing to see a low quality pannel used. I really like the iPhone, but this is pretty much a deal breaker - and not knowing if you will get one that does it, or doesn't makes it very hard to "trust" a future production. I would rather have waited for the Sharp pannels and delayed getting an iPhone due to supply issues, than Apple finding an alternative, lower quality, source to produce them.

  • Hortizontal black and white lines across web browser screen that appears and disappears but blocks usually 3/4 of web page, did not have with last version heard it might be my graphics card?

Since downloading Firefox 4, I will periodically get black and white horizontal lines that cover about 2/3 of the browser screen. There doesn't seem to be any trend to the website or areas it happens at, and will sometimes happen multiple times while scrolling through a large news article. The lines stay fixed to a certain area. The only way to get them to go away is to refresh the screen or if the page is big enough scroll to an area not affected and then scroll back. I've heard from someone that it might be my graphics card. My computer's a hand-me-down but not terribly old so it could be that the card is just old or bad, any other ideas?

    Try to disable hardware acceleration.
*Tools > Options > Advanced > General > Browsing: "Use hardware acceleration when available"
If disabling hardware acceleration works then check if there is an update available for your graphics display driver.
