Line Break in Chart Title??

Hi! Does anyone know how to make a line break in the title of a chart? For some reason, just pressing return or any combination of return with option, control, shift, etc. does not seem to be working... the title is really long to be on a single line and I'm not able to change the size either.

Hi kp,
True for Category titles, which are taken from a header column (see examples— Cat 1 through Cat 4 on table and chart below), but not for the Chart title, which displays an option return as a space, and whose box extends horizontally to accommodate the whole title in a single line, even when that line extends beyond the screen/page boundary (see example on chart).
Table names, when shown, are carried in a box that expands only to the width of the table to which they belong, which led to the example above the chart:
For the table example, there are two tables,
"Table with...title" contains two columns, and is placed behind "Table 1", the table containing the data. Only the first table has the Show title box checked.
Just a parlour trick, though—no advantage I can see to using this method of displaying a long table name over using a  text box, as suggested earlier by Jerry.
I can see where your suggestion regarding category names could have some merit, though. Its disadvantage is in doubling the height of the rows from which those names are grabbed.

Barry

Difficult to guess what is wrong in your system or what you made wrongly.
    Here it work.
Maybe a problem of corrupted preferences.
Try to run Numbers from an other User Account.
If it behaves flawlessly it will be time to try to disable the Preferences files:

  • Line break in Scene title?

I have long video titles and I am using the video button as my navigation.
Is there a way to have the title of each scene move down another line instead of having it all on one line? I have tried the <br /> but that does not work.
    Any ideas??
    Thank you.

Just hit enter and it will go onto another line.  But you have to make the box it is in big enough to see it.
Edit in photoshop, find one of the titles, see which "box" it is in, and enlarge it.  Keep in mind that the total "button" is the smallest rectangle that will hold all of what is in it, so this will make each button larger.
An alternative is to create the word titles as part of the background, then let the button just be the smaller shape and the video thumbnail.

  • Line break symbol in WAD Chart

    Hi,
We have WAD 3.5 but Query Designer 7.0.  And Internet Explorer 7.
We have a query where the column description has been split in two lines in the Query Designer.
When this query is put as chart in WAD a strange symbol is shown where the text is supposed to be split  (and the line is not split, but that is less of an issue.)
However when the same query is put as table in WAD, everything is fine.
Any suggestions on getting rid of this symbol?
Thanks in advance for your feedback.
    Reynir

    Hi Reynir,
I too have encountered the enter symbol in the Chart Legend. I think the only way to get rid of the same is to avoid using a line break in the Char desc in Query Designer, use a separator ( ) or so to denote what you wish to on the 2nd line - but that would make the col width too wide in the table view.

  • Chart Title on 2 Lines?

Hey guys, I love Numbers for charts as it looks wayyyyy more professional than Excel. However, there is one thing thats getting frustrating. My charts tend to have very long titles as they are the results of scientific experiments. When I enter a title and then copy the chart into Pages (my Report), the title is so long it goes off the page on both sides.
What i would like to do is simply have the title on 2 lines (I.e. get to half way through the title and press enter, in an ideal world), I have tried all ways to do this that i can think of but have run out of inspiration.
Any ideas? This seems to be something very simple and I may have missed something very obvious.
    Cheers
    Rowan

I would have bet the farm that pressing OPT-Enter would have worked, but nope. You may be stuck with copying the Chart's Title into a text box and turning the Title off.
Although, if it is a close fit (which it doesn't sound like it is), looks like the Character spacing in the Text Inspector works on the Chart Title, which might help some.

  • Output with line breaks seemingly randomly placed

    Hola -
I've adapted Tyler Muth's RSS feed article (http://tylermuth.wordpress.com/2008/01/22/producing-rss-from-plsql/) for the most part successfully; however, my output has breaks in the lines at inappropriate places, often in the mddle of an XML element tag for example. The placement of the breaks varies if I change the values of l_idx, l_len, l_defrows, l_maxrows, and l_desclen, but the breaks persist. They're not reflected in the code below but I've added the utl_file.fflush to no good effect.

Or have a look at the Oracle Documentation, for instance at the parameters for utl_file.fopen
max_linesize Maximum number of characters for each line, including the
newline character, for this file (minimum value 1, maximum
value 32767). If unspecified, Oracle supplies a default value of
1024.It wouldn't surprise me if your randomly placed line breaks are all 1023 characters a part.

  • How to avoid starting a page with line breaks?

Hello. I've just started to refine my Master's thesis and some of the topics moved up and down as I edited their contents. The problem is that in some cases the topic breaks right after the title, and the rest of the contents just move away to another page. Is there any way to avoid starting a page with line breaks or broken topics?

At the end of your title, you didn't inserted a line break but a paragraph break (carriage return).
Acivate the mode "Show hidden characters"
Select the carriage return (paragraph break)
    Delete it
Press Shift + return to insert a true line break.
It may be useful to apply that several times if you inserted several carriage returns between the title and the first filled line.

  • How to modify a chart title

I have created a chart in Keynote with a title. But the title is really close to the data, and I would like to increase the space between title and chart, but I don't know how. I cannot even cheat by adding a return and creating an empty second line below the actual title.
I know that I could create a seperate textbox to avoid this problem, but I will have to create many charts and I want the distance to be always the same, and I need the feature to turn the title on and off.
By the way: it is a line chart.

Dear How to modify a chart title,
I think you're going to have to become accustomed to the default position of the title. You can Provide Feedback to Apple using the form available in the Keynote app menu and tell them that you would like this option on the Chart Title feature. My guess is that it won't be high on their priority list since you do have the text box option to fall back on.
    Good luck,

  • Automatic line break in table of contents?

I have several long chapter titles that collide with the page number. Is there a way to set an automatic line break or something that will break the line at the same place? I could do this manually of course, but if I update the toc it would disappear agein. See image below. Thanks

It's not clear if "Hm?" if you are asking about the appearance of the dot leader and page reference that follow the second line of the TOC entry. Are you asking if this is an acceptable form? Are you thinking that the dot leader and page reference should appear on the first line of the TOC entry, and have the excess text wrap around?
Have you tried applying the "no break" property to the last few words of the title paragraph in the main text, or replacing standard spaces between the last few words with non-breaking spaces, to see how the TOC process works with them?
    [EDIT[
If applying the non-break property works satisfactorily for your needs, you can automate the process partially by manually inserting a "non-joiner" character in the main title text, at the point where you'd like the line to break, and define the TOC-entry paragraph style to have a nested style that applies the no-break property starting from the non-joiner to the end of the paragraph.
Search Google for "InDesign non-joiner" and " InDesign no break" without quotes, to find information from all over the Web, as well as topics in these Adobe forums and in InDesign help."

  • Xcelsius Present 2008 - Chart Title

I created a Dashboard with a Line Chart and 6 Label-Based Menus.  Because of everything I have on this chart, I felt I was forced to set this up with 6 individual Label-Based Menus versus using only one Label-Based Menu.  Basically, it's a chart with 6 questions and each question has 3 lines on the Line Chart.  My challenge is when I click on each Label-Based Menu, I want a Chart Title to appear.  This isn't happening because the only place to create a chart title is in the Line Chart Properties.  Normally, this would work but it's not because of having so many Label-Based Menus on one Dashboard.  I took a screen shot of this, but I don't see anywhere here I can attach a file.  ANY HELP or advice would be INCREDIBLY helpful.  I'm new at this and struggling with trying to learn this program for a new client.

Not sure I understand the scenario completely. Sounds like you could link the title in the line chart to a cell and use a formula to populate that cell with the correct title text.  Same could be done with using a test label ins stead of the title property of the line chart.

  • How do I create a line break in an axis label

I have a very long x-axis label that needs some line breaks. I've tried every key combination I can think of to no avail. Does anyone know how?
    Thanks,
    Mark

There are a few ways to get line breaks.
First way: Go to the Chart Inspector, Axis tab.  At the bottom it will either have references to the header cells it is using for labels or it will have a list of the labels. If it has references, use the second or third method.  If it has text, go to the label you want to modify.  Use Option-Return to put a line break in it.
Second way: This works when best before you create a chart and might work afterward if the chart is still refering to the header column and hasn't converted the labels to text. Use option-Return to create line breaks in the header cells of your table. In the screenshot below, the first label has no line breaks, the second has one, and the third has none but is simply wrapping to the next line in the cell.
Third way: If the chart inspector has references to the labels, go to the chart (not the table) and edit one of the labels. The inspector will now show text instead of references. Use the first method to add your line breaks.

  • Line breaks and wrapping incorrect on hebrew+english text

i have a string of mixed text with hebrew and english, usually the english is only the last word in the string.
when trying to show on a limited space (110px more or less) the line break looks like it performs incorrectly since the string is all mixed and it shows the english word in between the hebrew words.
I'm using the following, in a *pure* as3 project in the flex ide using sdk 3.5 and last version textframework swc.
    private function addText():void{
//title is a string brought from xml.
         title = "Canazei סקי איטלקי במיטבו בעיירה";

         return characterFormat;
any help with this will be greatly appreciated, unfortunately the bidi support is not clear and sometimes the examples in the docs are not working.

I played around with your example a little, and removed the explicit line placement you added, and have this (see below). It works as expected if you consider English the dominant language. If you wanted it to assume Hebrew instead, you should set the direction to RTL instead of LTR. Please let me know if this works for you.
