Line-in audio only works in Garageband

I have multiple audio/music apps installed. Can't get samples through my line-in via anything but Garageband; which I don't really use a lot. I use a Presonus USB audio interface when I'm in the office but at home or on the road I usually just plug in through the line-in built-in input. I literally can't get any audio to work unless I have an active track being monitored in GB. It's got to either be something I've really messed up or something incredibly simple that I'm missing (anti-feedback?). Here's all I have installed that I know of:
Traktor
Maschine 2
Audacity
Garageband
Soundflower
PreSonus Studio One 2 (basic)
Have checked through system pref/midi settings/audio routing for each of these apps... any ideas?
Thanks

What I was expecting was other people chiming in on this with possible solutions to stream audio only. Aside from simply "buy something new" .
If Apple makes a product that has a separate output for audio and they advertise and sell that product stating that you can use it with AirPlay to "listen to music", then to me it seems pretty obvious you don't need to turn on your television all the time to use these aspects of that product. Of course you need a power lead to watch video, that's something that has not to be said, I follow you there. If however you have to turn on your TV to simply listen to music (despite the fact that you have a dedicated output for music), THAT is imho something that needs to be said if that's the case... That's not obvious, that's just nonsense; why would you need to watch if the only thing you want to do is listen?
Anyway, semantics aside and wether Apple does or does not state certain things, you're answers were also helpful (for which I thank you) because they made me look at this problem from a different angle.  So this morning I thought: if my TV sends a bad off/standby signal to my HDMI and that in turn is blocking my optical audio out, why don't I just unplug the HDMI cable from the Apple TV and only use the optical audio out?
And eureka! I've been enjoying an hour of nice Airplayed music without my TV on!
So thanks a lot for putting me on the right track and sorry if I acted a bit annoyed, but I really felt had a point here. As did you Anyway, nice to be able to have a decent online discussion without things getting out of hand and with the additional bonus that my initial problem is now solved! (which, as a final note, is something very simple that could easily be stated in the manual: "if you want to use the optical audio out of your Apple TV to stream music, it is advised that you unplug the HDMI cable to prevent unwanted standby/off signals". )
Thanks for your help!

I have problems with outgoing call no audio, only works with speaker. I bought my iphone on december 2011.

Had the same problem, no audio on incoming or outgoing calls and only could hear the conversation of the call if I put on speaker. It seemed to start after I did a recent IOS update this past month. I tried restart, reset and restore of my iPhone but nothing changed. It appears not to be a software issue but a hardware problem. I got my phone this past summer so it was still under warranty and got it replaced.

MBPro 17 Intel Core 2 Duo Audio only works with the headphones?
There is a red light constantly emitting from the headphone socket?
I can not listen to sound unless headphones are plugged in - when taken out I get a red light and the volume controls kets seem locked?
    Please help!

    Hi Kitty.
Seems to be quite a popular problem. In another post, I posted the following.
"The red light is the data signal that is transmitted if you plug in an Optical Audio device such as surround sound speakers. I had the same problem for a short while with my 17' MBP. Sound was working fine from my built in speakers but I plugged in some earphones to listen to something that I did not want the rest of the office to hear and after pulling the hearphones out, the optical signal (red light) was being transmitted. The switch Cessna is referring to is the switch that is triggered inside the port that tells OSX that earphones/optical audio device is plugged in and to shut down power to the built in speakers. When the device is un-plugged from that port, the switch should get triggered again and power up the built in speakers and disable the optical light signal. Perhaps there is the slightest defect on the earphones you are plugging in that are preventing it from triggering the switch when the earphones are un-plugged.
Try a different sent of earphones to maybe trigger the switch if you are uncomfortable with the paper clip solution."
That seemed to solve the problem for that user.

    Good Afternoon djLDB,
The resource below explains how to set up an Aggregate Device in the AudioMidi Setup, which may be helpful in configuring your audio interface for sound input/output.  Click on the link for complete details.
How to combine multiple audio interfaces by creating an aggregate device - Apple Support

To set the System Setting in Audio Midi Setup:
From the Finder, choose Utilities from the Go menu. Open the AudioMIDI Setup application.
Control-click or right-click on the device you want to use and choose "Use this device for sound output" or "Use this device for sound input":
    Close the Audio Midi Setup.

  • Message audio only works for some contacts...

i have an iPhone 5S.  I'm updated to 8.0.2 When I try to do an audio message in iMessages it works for most people.  However my brother who has an IPhone 4s I cannot send him an audio message or audio text.  There simply is NO microphone to even attempt a audio message. I have 1 other person in my contacts where it's the same.  Also I have a friend who has an iPhone 5C and he is having the same problem.  Some contacts he can do an audio message some he cannot...
what at the heck is wrong???

So I'm just stuck with this feature only working on most of my contacts??

  • Audio only works one way

My friend and I tried audio chat today. In the past it worked fine. He has a new Powerbook and I have a G3 iBook, both of us are running Tiger.
He can hear me fine on audio chat but I cannot hear him at all. I have tested my headset and both the audio and mic work fine. He said his mic appears to be working correctly too.
    Some additional info:
    - he is on an ISDN connection
    - I am on a broadband connection
Previously, he was on broadband but has had to switch to ISDN.

Check syst. pref's sounds panel for correct settings and also go to ichat pref's & over to video.
Does it say "Ext. mic/Line in" or does it say, "Sound Input" above the Bandwidth Limit menu?
if you are using a line or ext. mic please change the setting accordingly (namely to "Ext. Mic" if you are using an external source for audio input as indicated above in your post).
Hope this helps but if not then you may have a network port issue. Either way please feel free to post back.

  • Audio Only Works With Headphones

So here is a weird one, when I'm in a video or audio chat, I can only hear the other person if I"m wearing headphones. I can hear everything right up until the chat begins even the vwoom sound as the other person accepts the invitation. If I put my ear next to the "right" internal speaker, I can barely hear someone talking but as soon I plug my head phones in I can hear perfectly. What's the story here?

    Hi,
I would try the "Run the Combo" Trick.
Download and Install the Combo version of 10.5.6 over the top of what you have.
This often correct issues like this that are hard to find.
If this does not work I would then delete com.apple.ichat.plist
This holds the camera and Mic info and the volume settings (But normally the Speech volume of the Alerts in iChat Preferences > Alerts)
However deleting this is fairly destructive as things go for iChat.
You lose any setting you have made in the Preferences :- Font choice, Font Colour, Balloon/Text IM background colour, Saved Transripts, tabbed Chats, Alerts you have set other than defaults, Menu Bar Icon (it's sub sections about Logging off fully on Quit and changing to Available on Launch)
You also Lose Saved Status Messages.
I would use this as a Last Resort.

  • PM8M3-V onboard audio only works in mono?????

Hello all......I just revived a 2 year old system that had an A*&S mb that died. The new board I used from MSI installed almost with no problems, accept for the on-board sound I downloaded LiveUpdate and updated all the drivers and checked bios but my version is currently newer than the download. I am sorry to say with stereo headphones on I only have a left channel...MONO! I checked the instruction manual and made sure that the audio jumpers were on the correct pins to transfer the audio signals to the rear output jacks. I guess that I will have to install a sound card, BF2 sucks in mono.....can't really play fully with one speaker working!

Thanks Svenomous.....yes I already checked all volume/audio controls for correct balance and sufficient level. I am also using brand new headphones I know are working, I use them on another system with no problems.

  • Why does my audio only work when i put water on the audio plug?

whenever i want to listen to music, i have to put water, or some liquid on the TRS (audio plug for earphones) for it to work. It will not detect an earphone without water. There is NOTHING wrong with my earphones, they work in other things without water. They are iFrogz. I need help really bad because i dont want to carry a water bottle on the bus and dip my cord in it JUST to listen to music. It is really annoying
    Ipod Nano 7g Blue

It sounds like a hardware problem, so it's probably not something that can be solved without repair (or replacement).  There may be a fault in the headphones jack that affects contact with headphones plug.  Water is an electrical conductor, so it improves the connection enough so it works temporarily.  That's my theory...  But because water is an electrical conductor, it can cause a short circuit that may damage the iPod.  That's why the warranty is voided if you accidentally get your iPod wet.
You can check your current warrany coverage with the iPod's serial number, here
    https://selfsolve.apple.com/agreementWarrantyDynamic.do
I believe Apple uses the serial number most of the time, to verify coverage.  If you have an Apple Store nearby, there are Apple tech support staff at the store's Genius Bar.  You can make a reservation (to avoid a wait) using the store's web page.

  • Audio only working for one user at a time - flash is the cause

    but what is the solution?
    OSX 10.6.8
    flash player 10,3,183,10
If one user is listening to something via some kind of web (flash) media player, and the other user logs on, then this 'new' user is unable to listen to anything at all - all audio is blocked - not just web stuff
I know flash is the cause as I can go to task manager and kill the other person's flash plug in and the sound comes on instantly
I've tried reinstalling but no joy
    How can I fix this?

I've reinstalled flash and checked that I have the latest version but this is getting ridiculous
Everytime I want to use skype or itunes or iplayer, I have to log in as the other user, close down all their web browsers, then go back to my account to get it to work, much to the annoyance of the other user.
    Flash now: 11.1.102.55
    OSX: 10.6.8

  • Audio only works from my MacBook instead of TV.

When I try to stream a video, the visual works fine but the audio comes from my MacBook instead of the TV. When I went to Sound Settings, the Apple TV showed up as an option for sound output but would go back to computer every time I clicked Apple Tv.
This happens randomly. I'll use the Apple TV to stream a video from the same website and some days it'll work perfectly and other days it won't.

    Hi,
I understand that you are in Airplay?   I had the same problem since my AppleTV updated today.
I restarted the airplay setting in the apple TV :   Settings / Airplay.   Deactivate Airplay.
You will loose the airplay icon in the upper right menu of your Mac.
Reactivate Airplay on the Apple TV and reconnect your Mac.
Solved the problem for me.   I hope it will help you too.   Sorry if the terms are not the right one, my AppleTV is not in English...

  • Audio only works half the time

Product name: HP 2000 Notebook PC
    Product number: C2N26UA#ABA
    Windows 8 64-bit
Sometimes my audio works, sometimes it doesn't. It was just working fine on a youtube video, then when I went to a different video I suddenly had no audio. Itunes doesn't have audio either, the song just stays at 0:00.
Restarting did nothing. Disabling and Re-enabling the speakers did nothing.
    Please help,

    Hello Intelligently,
Have you tried to reinstall the audio driver?  Give that a shot and please let me know if it helps to resolve your issue.
    Good luck!

  • USB external audio only works after reboot

I have a EMU 0202 USB soundcard in order to be able to hear sound in my late 2008 macbook (because the mini-jack from the headphones broke inside the laptop. but this is another story). The problem is that in order for the laptop to detect this soundcard I have to reboot OSX. If I disconnect the soundcard and connect it again, it won't be detected until I reboot my computer again. Thing is I'm tired of rebooting so often just to have sound. Do you have any idea on why is my Macbook only able to detect the soundcard when booting or how could I fix this?
    Thanks in advance.

I see the latest driver is from 2008 (http://www.emu.com/support/files/download3.asp?Centric=1005&Platform=2&File=596), and is supporting Leopard. Perhaps the driver is not fully compliant with Snow Leopard...? Try uninstalling your driver, and installing the one mentioned, and if that does not work, try contacting EMU.
    Kind regards:
    Espen.
