Line-in Jack

I have been using an amplified "line-in" mic headset for weeks on my G4 iMac. I use it for both gaming and speech commands. I have always used the escape key as my push-to-talk key. Today I could not get the computer to register the mic. No matter what application I run, when I push the esc key to acitvate the mic I hear clicks (as if you pushed delete too many times). I have checked all settings and they are just the same as usual.
I know that the quick fix to this is to get a USB mic. As this mic has been working fine I am curious to why this has happened.

This may sound crazy but try repairing the permissions. It's amazing how much it helps (or doesn't help).
The other thing is to make sure that it's still you're selected audio input/output in the sound control panel.
Lastly it could be the jack itself. The soldering inside the computer could be coming loose and the connection isn't solid.

  • Two Line-in jacks not working prope

I have a logitech 5. surround sound system on my computer. Three cables, yellow, black, and green.
A strange thing happens, however, when I attempt to get it working. I will plug all of the cables into thir color coded slots in the back of my sound card, but only the green line-in jack works properly. I can even connect the yellow or black cables to the green line-in jack and thos speakers will work.
    Solution to this problem?

Have you set speakers to 5. on Creative Speaker settings panel (for some(/certain) reason/settings, setting speaker mode on Windows speaker settings panel won't 'open' those other output channels (#2 & #3) but only the channel #)?
Also, if you're playing back stereo sources through multichannel system, you may need to enable CMSS processing.

  • Time Capsule OR Airport Extreme no line out jack?

Does it make sense to anyone else that Apple choose to inclue a line out jack on the Airport and not on the AP Extreme or TC? I really want a networked drive and one that is also a wireless station would be even better, but right now my cable connection is where my TV is in my living room and I have a AirPort there which connects to my stereo to play iTunes through the stereo. Now to add a TC makes sense, the price is right for a 500 GB HD but no stereo jack... just inconvienient I guess...

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
You can also consider an AppleTV as a box with a line out jack. It supports SPDIF and standard red/white RCA stereo cables. You'll need a TV to setup how it receives the audio, but once setup, like the Airport Express base station, you can setup iTunes to use the AppleTV's connected speakers for audio in another room. This is new with the version of the AppleTV software released yesterday.

  • Line In jack Problems

Ok so here is my issue, The line in jack in the back of my imac, for a while it was working, i have a mic and a mixer for my recording studio, until the other day it worked, but when i pug it in everything runs really slow garage band freezes, and it wont work any more on there, the rainbow curser comes on until i unplug it, and it hummm's really loud, now i also have boot camp with windows vista, when i plug it into it it also humms loud. It also flashes plugged in, then flashes unplugged, really fast between the two then i have headphones on and the sound will come out of the speakers on the imac,
its acting like its pocessed. im so confussed if some one could help i would really be thankful
    Thanks Ricky

I would guess it's a hardware problem with the line in jack, which will require a service engineer to deal with.
You can plug a mixer into the jack, not a microphone by itself.
A workaround would be to get an audio-USB interface and plug the mixer into that: the quality will also be better. Edirol make suitable ones, see also http://www.bulletsandbones.com/GB/FAQPages/Interfaces.html

I just got a new system with that card included and I obviously wanted to do what is normally always done and what I did on my older system with the SBLi've - plug in the speakers into the speaker jack and plug in my stereo system into the LineOut... but there doesn't seem to be such a jack on that card!!! What is this?!?!?

As told in the User's Manual on "About your Hardware":

    2. (GREEN)
Line Out jack (_) Connects to Front Left and Front Right inputs on powered analog speakers or an external amplifier for audio output.
    3. (BLACK)
Line Out 2 jack (_2) Connects to Rear Left, Rear Right and Side Right (only on 7. speaker systems) inputs on powered analog speakers or an external amplifier for audio output.
    4. (ORANGE)
Line Out 3 jack (_3) Connects to Front Center, Subwoofer and Side Left (only on 7. speaker systems) or Rear Center (only on 6. speaker systems) inputs on powered analog speakers, or an external amplifier for audio output.
Also, check the audio settings on 'Creative Surround Mixer' panel.

  • Sleeve slippage inside of line out jack on iMac

I routinely use headphones on my 27" iMac. I plugged a pair in this morning and got either popping and static or sound still routed through the iMac speakers. When I use the keyboard buttons to adjust sound there is a little NO sign underneath volume level. I have powered down, reset PRAM to no avail. I also checked system prefs for sound, which was useless.
I unplugged the headphones to take a look and there's this white sleeve I suppose I would call it that appears to have slipped a quarter centimeter inside the line out jack as compared to the position of the sleeve on the line in jack.
I'm really gentle plugging things in, I don't understand why this would have happened to a six month old iMac. Has this ever happened to anyone or does anyone have a solution other than Genius Bar? (It's a **** of a drive for me.)
Is it possible to reroute sound output through line in? Or would a USB sound card dongle work? I saw Griffin makes one.
Apologies if a similar thread has been posted elsewhere, I did a bit of searching. Thanks!

My audio out jack went bad last year and I had it replaced but it has started to go bad again so I believe they might have a workmanship issue here. I called my apple repair guy and he left a message on my phone that said its rare for it to happen once..let alone twice. I have news for him. It's happening. Thank God I have Apple Care, but this is still getting annoying.

  • Help using line in jack to play music...

At the moment I have a record player hooked up to my iMac (10.7.1). It's connected to a pre-amp which then goes to the line in jack via R/C to 1/8th in cable. Under Audio in sys prefs I can see that the audio is recognized when I play a record. And when I'm in Garage Band I can turn monitoring on and actually hear the audio through my computer's speakers. What I'm wondering is this: Is there a way to us the multi-speakers function within iTunes to play music from this record player to my stereo speakers. I should note that I have an Apple TV hooked up to a stereo system in another room (using a wireless base station) and i normally play music in iTunes through the computer speakers and my stereo speakers simultaneously.
Hope this makes sense and doesn't make me sound like a crazy person. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Glad to hear it helped.
I don't have an Apple TV so I don't know what goes with it and what not.
Might be a good idea to post Apple TV in the appropriate Forum https://discussions.apple.com/community/appletv/appletv where there's Winston and other cracks.

  • Distortion workaround: can chip swap using line out jack for rear out ja

I am using a SB Audigy EAX. My headphones sound like a blown speaker mostly out of left ear. I tryed everything including reinstalling xp on my dell and nothing worked [yes I tried other headphones to no avail]. Finally I played around with the balance and realised that the left and right channels were leaking together slightly so I think there is a physical problem on the card. As a temp solution I have set my card to use four speakers and plugged my headphones into the rear out which is a different jack on the card. It sounds fine from the rear out jack but I wish there was a way to have the card use the rear out jack for line out output. In other words is there a program or driver that can tell the chip to swap line out jack for rear out jack? My card is no longer under warranty and I only ever use heaphones. The problem with my temp solution is that some winamp plugins and games don't function properly.

On my sound blaster ex, when connecting through the analogue 6 channel output, Line Out 3 is a 4 pole mini jack. My sound system is only 5. and doesn't need the centre rear speaker. Does any one know if in this case I can just use a standard 3 pole stereo jack for subwoofer and front center?
For analog 5. it should work. See the user's guide.

  • Equium L20-197: No line-in jack - How to record from an external audio source

    Hi,
I'm generally very pleased with my Equium L20, but am now finding a few annoyances that I guess are cost-cutting issues. For instance, there's no onboard mic, so need to buy one for Voip purposes. And I would like to use this laptop to record from an external audio source, but now discover that there is no line-in jack, and it seems the microphone jack is mono only, even if it was possible to configure the audo card to use this for line-in source.
I'd be very grateful if anyone has any ideas for a workaround perhaps using a USB port.
    TIA
    Keith

    Hi R2D2,
Thanks for your quick reply - it set me on the right track and I've been googling for similar solutions available in the UK. I've since found this product - http://www.dolphinmusic.co.uk/page/shop/flypage/product_id/9326 and redhawk has pointed me at something by Creative Labs which I'll try and track down.

  • Is there a sound card with a Microphone AND Line In jack on the boa

I have been looking through Creative's cards and it seems like they all share the Microphone and Line In on one jack. I need 2 separate jacks because I need to use both at the same time. I do not have a free dri've bay for a bay device either, so I need the jacks to be on the card itself.
Does Creative make a sound card like this? Or should I look somewhere else?

  • My microphone line-in jack isn't working.

I want to use an external microphone for online gaming conversations. I have a headset with both mic and earphones. I can hook the earphone jack up and can hear fine, however when i hook the microphone jack i can't get it to work.
Yes, i have gone into system preferences/sound/input and selected the line-in tab. Nothing is letting me use an external mic. (although the internal mic works fine)
The funny thing is, when i boot into Windows XP, i can use the headset perfectly fine, both microphone and headphones.
    What's the deal?

I found some information on Apples Web site that may shed some light on this subject. The link below has more info.
The last line may indicate the problem, also I found somewhere some mic's need their own power source. Look around on the Apple site it gives that information also.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=43019
To turn on the microphone and use it as the sound input device, follow these steps:
    1. From the Apple menu, open the Monitors & Sound control panel.
    2. Click the Sound button.
    3. From the Sound Monitoring Source pop-up menu, choose Built-in Mic or External Mic.
    4. Click the close box to close the control panel.

Important: Some microphones will not work properly without the use of a third-party sound recording application.

Thank you very much for your reply. This is what I was hoping not hear though...
It seems that I have no choice other that recording "mono". The problem is that the audio device I want to connect has true stereo output (the signal differs significantly between the two channels) and has no option to downmix to single-channel, which would be find by me, and now I have to manually implement it before I can fed it to my laptop.
I was considering a USB card and I even bought a Sound Blaster Play! based on a video review that explained that the sound can actually record line-in, but it can't. Models that guaranty a line-in start at 60 euro or so, and is already much higher than my budget.
Originally I was going for a "Sound Blaster Easy Record", but I cannot find it anywhere in Europe, only in some e-stores in Hong Kong and Australia, and I don't want to order from that far, because the shipping costs will double the final price.
I think I will have to settle with a combo jack splitter and only record the "left" channel.
If you have any idea on a cheap usb card that supports stereo line-in please let me know.
Also if you know a cheap way to downmix two channels into mono using only passive electronic components that would also help a lot.

  • Megastick 256 (USB 2.0) has "external MIC" or "line-in" jack ??

In the manual on page 9 can be found an information "12.External MIC jack", but in the player setup and in the spec. is "line-in". So, what type input has the player ?? It can be changed ??
I'm interested in "mic-in" line, but external standard mic doesn't work.

  • Damaged Audio line out jack

Hope to get some advice here - after messing with my MDD to get a Time Capsule up and running (while changing the ethernet connections a couple of times), I managed to thwack the audio line out cord from the box enough to damage it - I noticed one channel of the audio was gone, then after finding the jack is loose, wiggled it just enough to make it worse or better depending where the cord sits... I am using powered speakers so the apple speaker mini-jack doesn't seem to be a good option instead of the line out...
The question is, can this be repaired without replacing the logic board?
    Many thanks in advance!
    David

    Hi, David -
Repairing that component could be not inexpensive (if done by a tech shop) or risky (if done by someone else).
As an alternative, you could consider using the Griffin iMic Adapter.
