Line In Recording Level Adjustment

I am recording from a tape recorder to the hard drive. I have done this a lot over the years. Suddenly I am no longer able to adjust the line in recording level. I have always before gone to Control Panel/Hardware and Sound/Sound (recording tab), Click Line In, then click on Levels. When I adjust the level, either lower or higher, it does nothing to change the sound level. Can aynone please tell me why this feature isn't working any longer on my computer. Could some other setting have gotten changed? Where should I look? Thanks!!!!

Have you tried to discuss it with mixer manufacturer?
I mean they know own product very well and have best experiences with it.
I presume they have tested it on different hardware platforms and different operating systems so I believe they are the right address where you can ask for help.
In control panel you have standard options for sound but maybe you need something specific for connected mixer.

  • Record Level Adjust for Audio in Voice Memo or Video Recorder

I would like to request that Apple allow me to adjust the record audio volume level when recording in Voice Memo or Video Recorder modes. Often I find that the audio is distorting and most times I cannot step back far enough to avoid distortion levels. While I love the ability to SEE the audio level in Voice Memo mode, I am hoping that it is only a matter of firmware upgrade to be able to ADJUST the record level.
Also, if it is possible, it would be great to see some indication of audio level when recording video... something simple like a bar graph with green, yellow and red bars with the highest level reached sticking for a few seconds so that I can tell what the level is.
An alternate solution (if none of the above is possible in a firmware update) would be to automatically adjust the recording level to prevent audio distortion.
Thanks for the great iPod and here's hoping for a great firmware update in the near future!

Thanks, I've submitted my recommendation to Apple.

  • C-Media Line In record

Hi there, just a quickkie. Has the O/B C-Media soundcard got an "auto" audio in level record? I have set the sound properties all through the C-Media device, and am recoerding from the record player to the soundcard. If I set the line in record level to "0", it still records well into the red on the VU meter thingy. Turning the output of the source down makes no difference.
I carnt see anywhere in the settings to adjust the Line in record level manually.
    Cheers Chris

Thx reilly. I am using cool edit2000 to do the recording, but have tryed it with total recorder as well. When its recording the source, I can adjust the line level record volume (In windows sound prop), and the sound level from my PC speakers responds accordingly, however, it has no effect on the "VU" meter of the recording software
Its recording into the red, not by a lot, but when the record is played from the source record player thru its own speakers, theres no distortion in the "Louder parts" of the song.
When I have done a recording of the same song onto the PC, as a wave or mp3 files, its distorting at the "Louder" parts.
When recording, I have all the Volume levels in Windows on "0" in the windows sound properties. The sound card still still records the song tho, but at levels a bit higher than I'd like (distorts on playback on Louder parts), and that makes me think that there is "auto" line level record on this soundcard.
Can u suggest another recorder software to try out.
    Cheers Chris

Why can't I adjust the recording level for a Blue mic???

  • Can't adjust recording level with M-Audio Fast Track Pro

I downloaded the appropriate driver for my M-Audio Fast Track Pro interface & everything looks fine... BUT I can't adjust the Recording level at all. I am not sure if this is an issue with the M-audio device, or garage band??? It is driving me crazy, since I just want to make some music and can't even hear what is being recorded. ???

Thanks, .... Yes to all of the above. I am wracking my brain & will call M-Audio tomorrow. Everything looks perfect on the interface & on garage band - but, even though the Fast track Pro shows up in my sound preferences & I can select it as the input & output source, etc., when I go to its window, even hooked up, it says no "device is not connected." Then it details that there are "no input controls" under sound in system preferences. I have two working usb cords & it does the same on either. I think this is the problem & have no idea how to fix it. I just want to plug it all in and record & have lost So much time . Hmmmmm???

  • Recording level isn't adjustable ?????????

    Hello,
It seems like many people have tried to answer this question but for me there is no luck of sorting out my problem.
(I will be inserting pictures as I'm not very good at explaining)
I got a Mustang I/II amp (by Fender) for Christmas (I sing on YouTube and need to get this sorted quick). I am using Garageband 09 on my macbook pro and have for many years (I have never had a problem till now). I have recorded one song with the USB port and it was great but the next time I tried the recording level was greyed out.
I have tried changing the setting through Audio MIDI setup but it was greyed out. I'm not very good with laptops and computers but I need this sorted quickly due to my YouTube career.
    Please help
    Thank you

The Recording Level slider is NOT a GarageBand setting. Think of it as a "remote" control that directly accesses the select audio device (through its driver).
That means, if the selected audio device lets you change its input level through this software control, then the Record Level slider is active. This slider is "linked" to the other input slider on the Audio MIDI Setup app and the System Preferences Sound tab. If you have those windows open, then you'll see them moving at the same time. That's what I mean with linked, basically they are all the same control, controlling the audio device (if allowed).
    Hope that helpsĀ

  • Setting the record straight for setting recording levels in Logic

    Hey everyone,
I asked a similar question a while back and got some great feedback, but I'm still a little confused about how to set a perfect recording level and work with the fader in Logic. A lot of what I've been doing has been trial and error and I would like to ask a few more specific questions:
I record with a MOTU traveler and have recently, for example, been recording direct with my guitar into the MOTU inputs. I am using "pre-fader metering", which is checked, and I using "software monitoring", which is also checked. When I am watching the fader, what should I be looking for? I always have the fader set at 0.0db. How do I set the perfect level in this situation? Should the fader be hitting red as I record? How do I make sure I don't clip, and what should I be watching for overall? AND, is it all the same process when recording with microphones? I've heard Logic records at a low level with MOTU products, but what exaclty does this mean in terms of setting levels and watching the fader as I record? I have been recording a lot lately and have some good sounding tracks and some that are not so great and I think it has a lot to do with the topic of this post.
Thanks for the help and clarification.

the fader position in logic does nothing to affect the recording level. That is totally dependent on the gain setting on your MOTU. The logic fader merely allows you to adjust the level at which you listen to the material you are recording. If you set the gain correctly on your MOTU then you shouldn't see the logic audio object hit the red unless your logic fader is set higher than 0dB. If your logic fader is at 0, and you still see red, then your gain is set too high. Remember, digital distortion is not like analog distortion. Once you have recorded the signal and you are in playback mode, then things change somewhat. The internal headroom of logic allows individual channels to hit the red without causing audible distortion. You should definitely avoid hitting the red on your audio output objects though.
I haven't heard about low levels with MOTU stuff. My own 896 has three settings on the inputs - mic, line and fixed +4dB. If you have variable gain as well, then you should be able to get healthy gain. If your recording level is very low, then recording at 24bit will help a lot towards a more detailed recording, as 16 bit can get grainy if the recorded levels are low.

  • I can't raise my recording level when recording my guitar

When I plug my guitar directly into my computer, GarageBand (line in) with guitar volume on max I get a weak recording signal (10% signal strength). It does record with decent playback but the signal is very weak with lots of headroom. When I adjust the "recording level" slider (even to max) I only gain another, maybe 10%, nowhere near the clipping red lights. Again, my guitar volume is set at max. Any ideas???

Your guitar's signal just isn't strong enough, you either need to pre-amplify it somehow (e.g. by using a pre-amp or a mixing console) or get an audio interface that does the analog-to-digital conversion.

  • Creative Zen V Plus Line In Record

    Hi all
I am looking at getting a number of these for my workplace to use primarily as a line in/external mic recording device.
We have trialled a number of HD based recorders in the past; iRi'ver, Cowon but we have found the line in recording standard to be poor.
I was wondering if anyone has one of these and could tell me what the recording standards are like, especially regarding the volume levels of the line in recording?
The iRi'ver and Cowons both have line in recording but the volume level is so low it is pretty useless.
    Thanks in advance
    Tim

I use my Zen Nano Plus primarily for line in recording directly from sound systems. Line-in recordings are saved as MP3s and you can pick the encoding bitrate, either 96, 28 or 60. The recordings with the built-in microphone are saved as WAV files. I've found that for line-in recordings it's best to put in some headphones and check that the recording level (via volume control) is satisfactory. I've never used any other line-in recorders so I can't provide any comparison. Anyway, I typically use the free version of Wavepad to do an auto gain adjustment on the recordings. Hope I was of some help to you!

  • Audigy 4 Pro Low Recording Levels/Master Knob/OSD probl

I purchased a second-hand Audigy 4 Pro. I was not given the software disk but managed to install the latest drivers and get it to play MP3s. I use Adobe Audition to record my old tapes to MP3 and record my attempts at guitar. With my SBLi've I had no problem. I bought the Pro because of the ease of using the breakout box. However I have some quesions about some problems I am having. ) Since I have no Creative software, just Win XP Mixer I don't seem to be able to control the input levels from either the mixer or the box. I have a tape deck using RCA to Line In 3 and an electric and acoustic guitar to Line In 2. The mixer record levels seem to have no effect. I can record but nothing seems to be much more than -20db or so at most. Could this be because Adobe Audition only shows Line In 3 L (ie one channel only)? Could this be because of the much greater dynamic range of the Audigy 4 compared to the SBLi've Value? Do I need additional Creative software and if so what and how to get it please?2) The Master knob on the breakout box just spins round and round without sto

Wow these forums still suck. You have easy questions and no one bothered to help you out. I registered jsut to answer them for you although you probably already figured it all out. . It seems that loudness is optomized by creatives own drivers. What you described was also true back when you could use the e-mu driver hacks before creative bought e-mu. 2. The master knob indeed spins for infinity, obviously with no effect once you get to either end. This sucks becasue i have OCD and constanly spin this thing all kinds of ways. THey should have used the same system as the line-/mic knob. Only God and the engineer will ever know why they did this. 3 Yes. The on screen display is pat of the creative media player app.
So to solve all your problems, you can get the full software package from creative.com under the support menu. Just follow the menu options for your device. The software requires that you have the hardware which you do so the software is free. One more problem you WILL have. The software doesnt install under XP. You have to enter windows safe mode and install it from there otherwise the whole thing freezes up during the start of the install process. Fun times!

  • Product Request: Line-In Recording for Micro (or a USB Doo-D

I think the Micro would really benefit from that level of functionality.
There are two ways it might work, but I don't know the technical sides...
: the headphone jack is not just a source or dread; it's also Remote-Ready. This may point to additional input uses for the hardware, if there is the firmware to exploit it.
2: a line-in accessory could certainly be attached through the mini-USB jack. Again, the firmware would have to support it, but I would certainly pay for a doo-dad that let me record lectures and whatnot with an external microphone, not to mention the whole "record from a CD player" aspect, great for my numerous partially-scratched disks that my computer refuses to read...
Plus, a USB doo-dad would trans-product - they could be used with all the other players that use the mini-USB jack to transfer data. Anyway, a feature like that is too good to only feature in the N200.

I've just found a Yahoo! Group that discusses audio recording with Creative's Nomad Jukebox 3:

    ps.
    yahoo.com/group/njb3tapers
So that's more proof that there's an interest in that. Maybe not as widespread, but I think one of the reasons the NJB3 was as successful was because of its recording capabilities, because as simple MP3 player it was too big, so it was the extra features such as line-in recording that made it stand up.

  • IMic recording level.

I'm using the iMic USB interface to record drums but the volume control for Real Instrument is "greyed out"... can't be adjusted (it's "locked" all the way to the left). The computer preferences recognize and receives the input device. But I can't raise the input to a recordable level in GB. Is this a software problem?
I can record without any problems using Audacity. But why won't GarageBand allow me to adjust the recording level?
I have tried reinstalling OSX and GarageBand but I still have the same problem.
There's nothing wrong with the iMic because it works with Audacity.
    Any ideas?

Hmmm well it appears that it is working. I've discovered that I am able to record, but the slider in GB is still greyed out so I can't adjust the recording level; but it seems to be ignoring the GB setting and just looking to the system preferences for the mic level. So I can only assume that it must be a software fault with GB.
    Thanks for your help!

  • Zen V plus line in recording with 10 minute tra

I just purchased a zen v plus specifically for recording certain programs using the line in recorder. The programs are generally /2 to 3 hours long. The problem I have is that the line in recorder breaks up the recording into 0 minute tracks. Is there a way to program or adjust the setting,so that it's not broken up into tracks?
    Thanks

When you record a track, the recorded track is automatically named LINE followed by the date and time of the recording ( LINE YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM:SS ). For example, if you recorded a track on March 5, 2004 at 2:57 pm, the track is named >LINE 2004-03-5 4:57:00 . You can just extract the recorded track from the player and rename it when you have it connected to your computer.
