Line-level audio recording via headset jack

I'm interested in using my Touch to run the "FourTrack" app - but want to record line-level rather than via a mic. (I'm not very technically minded.)
Is there any reason that I can't use an "iPOD VIDEO / HIFI CABLE, 3.5mm RCA to AUDIO VIDEO AV TV Cable for IPOD Video Photo Nano Mini" (as it is described on Amazon) and use the video RCA plug (the yellow one) for my audio in.
(I guess that the touch expects a mic-level input, rather than line-level. I'll be getting a DI Box if that assumption is correct.)

  • Digital audio input via mini jack/toslink from ADA, monitored via USB audio output... is this do-able? I know digital audio input should be okay but how do I monitor it, apart from using the internal speakers?

Digital audio input via mini jack/toslink from ADA converter, monitored via USB audio output to amplifier... is this do-able? I know digital audio input should be okay but how do I monitor it, apart from using the internal speakers?

You can output audio thru HDMI, with appropriate adapter.
You can use additional cheap external usb audio for monitoring.

  • Line level audio set to mic level by mistake, audio distorted, help!

I mistakenly set my camera input to mic level instead of line level so the louder music from the concert is muddy.  I watched the waveform on my camera screen and didn't let it go into the red.  As I start to edit now I see that the waveform is fairly flat on the top of much of the audio and it doesn't sound great. None of it goes above 0db. Is there any techniques to make this sound better? I tried DeClippper but the scan does not show any problem because, I suppose it's under 0db.
I shot a great video but the audio s**ks.
Thanks for any help you can offer.
btw, I'm using Audition CS 6, ver 5.0.2  Build 5

Your problem here is that even though the recording level has been kept down, the preamp has overloaded, so what you have is a good recording of, er, distortion. Even if you made this recording clip, it wouldn't help you, as this distortion isn't clipping distortion at all, and has completely different characteristics. And I'm afraid that there's no such thing as undistortion software, regardless.
I think that you may well have to write this one off to experience, I'm afraid.

  • Connecting MACBOOK to home audio system - via 'headphone' jack?

When setting up the MACBOOK to deliver its audio output to an amplifier/receiver, how is that best done?
That is, I assume a y-cable (stereo mini plug-to-(2) RCA plugs) might not be the best way, since it's taking a 'headphone' level signal to what are supposed to be 'line level' inputs.
But are there other better ways of doing this, given that the 'headphone out' is all the MACBOOK has?
    Thanks.

Just realized that was a full size Toslink and not the mini one on a MacBook. You could either use an adapter or a purpose-built full-size Toslink to mini optical.

  • Listening to Line In Audio/Recording from Vinyl

I'm not sure where exactly to post this, but I'm guessing it is a software issue with OS X. I was just given an old record player (Miracord) and receiver (harmon/kardon 330c) and I've got it all hooked up correctly (or so I think, record player > receiver > Tape Out RCA > RCA to 1/8" jack cable > iMac Line In). Under "Sounds" in system pref it does show some volume being I play a record. I play a record and hit record in garageband and Audacity I hear nothing but it does record and on playback it sounds like it is supposed to. Why can't I hear the audio as it is played through the line in imput? Also any thoughts/tips on recording form vinyl on a mac would also be appreciated. Thanks.
    Dave

    Hi Derato!
You are doing it the right way, as far as I can see, and exactly the same as I did getting some old family recordings on tape cassettes on to my hard disk for burning on a CD.
In Audacity, did you click 'monitor input'? Otherwise you won't hear a thing!

  • Monitoring effects in audio recording via Apogee Duet

I had to delete Logic preferences to connect Logic Remote. As a result I have lost effects in headphones out of Apogee Duet Firewire. I can only monitor clean. Is there an obvious fix? (Logic x , Yosemite, Apogee Duet 2 firewire)

It was a Bus (and human) error in Logic Mixer. Sorted, Thanks.

  • No audio from headset jack

I am wondering if there is an app or other process that would possibly turn off audio to the headset jack. The headset that I have used in the past is functioning, but when attached to my Droid Razor Maxx no longer plays audio. When plugged into my Razor, I no longer receive audio through the ear pieces, but the audio still plays through the phone's speaker. Has anyone else experienced this problem?

You can try restore in iTunes also
If that does not work yeah call 1-800-MYIPHONE or make an appointment at an Apple store with a genius

  • How do I monitor the Line-In (Analog) input via my connected speakers?

I'd like to do this in order to hear audio coming from another device on-top of the audio already coming out of my Mac. On a Windows box, I would simply mark the checkbox for the input in the sound settings and the input is heard over attached output speakers, etc.
    Beavis2084

Check the volume setting in the "Input" tab of "Sound" system preference. If it's still too low, run Audio MIDI Setup (Utilities folder. Set "Properties For" to the audio input and make sure the Audio Input sliders are all the way to the right. The Mac uses line-level audio input, so if you are using a microphone you may need a per-amp or iMic

  • Mini jack headsets line level or mic level?

Can someone please tell me if they have tested the mini jack headsets with a mac.  I know for a fact that if the microphone doesn't provide a line level input, that you won't be able to use this type of headset on a mac.  Even if you have the physical ports needed on your mac and the mac knows how to interpret the mic signal, you won't be able to use the headset unless it provides a line level input.

G4 Minis do not have optical out - only analog.
Line-level seems to be a strenght of analog signal - according to this WikipediA article. Whether the G4 will adjust the signal depending on which type of cable you use or always send the same signal is unknown to me, but there is no option in System Preferences nor in Audio MIDI Setup (in /Applications/Utilities) to specify which kind of signal can be sent.

  • Stereo line-level analog audio input?

The analog audio input on my machine seems to be mono only. If I put in a stereo line-level signal it just duplicates the left channel on the right. Is there any way to input a stereo line-level signal through this jack?
    ALFRED GUZZETTI

The input source is a DV tape deck. At the head of finished tapes I record bars and tone. The first segment of the tone is on both channels. It is followed by tone on the left channel only, then the right channel only. When I monitor what the computer is getting either through headphones or direct the input to Soundtrack Pro, where the meters display left and right, I hear and see sound on both channels from both the stereo input and the left-channel input (which shows up on both channels in the computer). The right channel only input is not audible or visible on the meter. The computer has always been this way. I assumed, maybe wrongly, that the input uses a stereo jack since these are pretty universal, but that in effect, the input is mono.

  • How record line-level stereo input on GarageBand iOS?

I'd like to record line-level stereo input sent from my Mackie mixer to GarageBand on my iPhone 4S. I tried plugging a standard 1/8" stereo cable into the headphone jack, but no luck. The GarageBand manual suggests that this is possible, and there is one (pricey) cable I've found that seems to handle this, but it claims that the audio input is mono only, suggesting that I may need a cable connection to the dock (not the headphone jack) to handle stereo.  I can't find a cable to do this, however...ideas?
    Many thanks,
    Jim

Sonoma Wire Works' "GuitarJack Model 2" iOS peripheral can help you do that. It's expensive though.

  • How do I get a good line level from the headphone jack from my latest model iMac?

My house is wired for analog sound and have for years used my iPod and iPhone to send an analog signal to my amplifier which drives speakers in multiple rooms. When I try this on my brand new iMac I get a buzz. Is there a setting or patch cable that can give line level analog audio out of my iMac?

There is no audio out any longer on the new iMacs.
Not true.   All the iMacs have audio out, including the current models:
Headphone/optical digital audio output (minijack) - this can be used for line output also
Support for Apple iPhone headset with microphone
The current models don't have an audio input.

  • Does the built-in DAC on my 2007 mid yr iMac support 96/24 audio as it supplies signal to the headphone jack? (is there a reason to export audio via optical jack then to an external DAC?

does the built-in DAC on my 2007 mid yr iMac support 96/24 audio as it supplies signal to the headphone jack?  If so, is there a reason to export audio via optical jack then to an external DAC then to stereo?

My suggestion to work around this problem would be to hook up an Airport Express. The AE also has an optical out the same as your iMac. As long as your wireless connection is robust enough you should be able to stream from your iMac to your AE and then have the optical cable connect between your AE and your DAC, which then connects to your Integrated Amp/Receiver/Pre-Amp (depending on your system configuration).
I assume because you are using the optical out and connecting to an external DAC that you are looking for a high level of Audio quality ?
