Line on desktop with icons below it

I have no idea what it is i do from time to time but suddenly there will appear a horizontal line about two inches from the bottom of my screen. Below the line will be a couple of document icons maybe or perhaps a programme icon. This is not the dock bar. It is further below. It is not launchpad, It is not mission control.
This happened in all three version of Mac OS i have had and i am now on mavericks and a day or two ago the same happened.
When i tap one of the little icons, it brings the docuemnt up.
It is not a fault, but some little known feature I suspect!
Anyone else ever seen it? I contacted an apple agent and they didnt know what it was for either.
Tx

This is not a fault, folks, it is not a screen fault or anything like that ... this is a feature of Mac OS... i have seen this same thing appear from time to time in different versions of the OS, mavericks included.
I have the up to date version of mavericks.

  • How do I view only the desktop with icons and the finder?

I have a hot corner set up to show the desktop.. in Snow Leopard when I exposed the desktop and then clicked on the finder in the dock *just* the finder would show.
Now, with Lion, when I click on the finder it comes into view but all the other open applications come sweeping back in hiding the desktop.
Can I change this back to the way it was before? Or is there another sneaky quick way to show only the desktop and the finder? Set up an entirely different "desktop" in mission control dedicated only to having nothing open in it?
In short: I need a fast way to drag icons from the desktop into folders in the finder. Also, this is driving me nuts.
thanks to anyone who can help.

If you can see a patch of Desktop, with a program (any program other than Finder) window active, hold down both Option and Command and click that patch of Desktop. This will auto-hide all windows for all other programs and switch focus to the Finder/Desktop at the same time.
This works when going from any active program to another, except that the Desktop itself will not get hidden (open Finder folders will get hidden).
To bring a program's windows back to visible status, just click the program's icon in the Dock. For open Finder windows which are hidden, just click the Desktop (plain click).
If you want to hide the windows of just one program, with it the active program hold down just the Option key and click in the window of another program (the Desktop or a folder window counts for this purpose). All windows of the original program will be hidden, and focus will switch to the second program.

  • Can't see desktop with icons

Updated to Lion and now the only way I can get to the non-apple installed apps is through Finder.  For example, Gotomeeting is showing in Finder as a Desktop icon, but when I switch to Desktop view, all I can see are open applications and it is not on Launchpad or the Dock.  Seems like a setting somewhere would give me the old "view Desktop" where I can see all my desktop icons.

    Hi,
In general, event ID 1530 means there are some data in the user profile are still be accessed when the user log
off from the Terminal Server. Please check if any of the data is still remained in the user profile supposed to be deleted. You can use Process Monitor or Process Explorer in order to find the software which is using the data and find the solution. If there
is no such data remained, the Windows have possibly stopped the process and deleted the data when log off. In such a case, you can ignore the Event 1530.
In addition, I recommend running SFC /Scannow from an elevated command prompt and check a dump file for Windows
    Explorer under C:\Localdumps.
    Besides, you can also download
Autoruns to troubleshooting Explorer issues. Please run Autoruns as Administrator, go to Options menu, Filter, select Hide Microsoft Entries and Ok. After that, open the Explorer tab,
and you will see all DLL that are running inside File Explorer, so start disabling and testing if Explorer crashed.

  • My iPod touch shows that it is charging but it actually doesn't charge and I've tried to restore/ restart it but the only icon is the charging icon with the battery icon with a bit of red fill and a small lightning icon below it. Can anybody help me?

My iPod touch shows that it is charging but it actually doesn't charge and I've tried to restore/ restart it because the only icon is the charging icon, the one with the battery icon with a bit of red fill and a small lightning icon below it. Can anybody help me and give me solutions before I go to an apple service center?

Place the iPod Touch into DFU mode.  This will be similer to what the factory would do to install the iOS onto new iOS devices.
Placing it into DFU mode will allow you to "format" and install the current iOS for that device.
To place your iOS device into DFU mode.
First connect you iOS device to you computer.
Open iTunes if not already open
Now turn off your iOS device using the power swipe.
Press the home and sleep button on your iOS device for 10 seconds.
Release the sleep button but carry on holding down the home button.  For another 10 seconds.
Your iOS device should now be on DFU.  Click on restore and iTunes will download the lastest iOS for your device.
Hopefully that sorts it if not, you will have to go to a sevice centre or call Apple Care up and get them to collect it and repair it. (replace it)

    - I suspect that he went to Settings>General>Reset>Erase all content and settings.  For 1G or 2G iPod that can take hours and it will likely stall out if not connected to a charging source.
    Try the following:
    - A reset.
Reset iPod touch:  Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - The connect to computer and try to restore via iTunes.
    - Id something is still showing onthe screen, disconnect from computer/charging source and let the battery fully drain. After charging for an hour, Try the reset and restore.
    - If you can turn the iPod off, se if placing the iPod in recovery mode and then restore. For recovey mode:
iPhone and iPod touch: Unable to update or restore

  • I LOST MY DESKTOP WITH MAPS ON MY IMAC

I was copying my music folder to an external HD, and on a certain moment i lost my orginal itunes settings with all my submaps, all music titles still oke but no submaps anymore. I lost also my desktop with all the maps and files wich were there. I only see on my desktop now the HDD of my imac.
In the finder i found the maps still under desktop icon, but when i want to bring them into my desktop it says:
the item can not be removed, due that the desktop can not be changed.....
UNDER FINDER: i find the icon desktop, on all my other mac computers it says bureaublad, as i am using dutch language, coule that be that he took a new desktop that he is not reconising . On my timemachine it speaks also of bureaublad instead of desktop.
    Also when i want to reset from my timemachine, I njever see the orginal desktop info anymore, as my Itues subtitles can not been set back anymore;
Please help , what i need to do, to solve my problems.
iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

Take these steps if the cursor changes from an arrow to a white "prohibited" symbol when you try to move an icon on the Desktop.
Sometimes the problem may be solved just by logging out or rebooting. Try that first, if you haven't already done it.
Select the icon of your home folder (a house) in the sidebar of a Finder window and open it. The Desktop folder is one of the subfolders. Select it and open the Info window. In the General section of the window, the Kind will be either Folderor something else, such as Anything.
If the Kind is Folder, uncheck the box marked Locked. Close the Info window and test.
If the Kind is not Folder, make sure the Locked box is not checked and that you have Read & Write privileges in the  Sharing & Permissions section. Then close the Info window and do as follows.
    Back up all data.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    xattr -d com.apple.FinderInfo Desktop
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
If the problem is now resolved, and if you use iPhoto, also do as follows.
Quit iPhoto, if it's running, and relaunch it while holding down the option key. It will prompt you to select a library. Choose the one you want to use (not the Desktop.)

  • WIn 7 PRO to Win 7 PRO Remote Desktop with matching 1920x1080 Dual Monitors

I have done quite a bit of looking and still do not know if  WIn 7 PRO can connect to a to Win 7 PRO  with Remote Desktop with matching  1920x1080 Dual Monitors. It seems like it cannot use dual monitors by the HELP file.  But
then why does it have  "Use all of my monitors for the remote session" as a selection in the Connection settings ? Just what is the real answer ? Both systems are 64 bit.   If the answer is YES.   Please tell me how !

    Hello i-wonder-why,
To use this Remote Desktop Multimon feature, you must:
1.Connect using the Remote Desktop Client 7.0 (mstsc.exe) available initially on Windows 7/Windows Server 2008 R2.
2.Enable Multimon using one of the three methods described below:
    a. Click “Use all monitors for the remote session” in the client (mstsc.exe) window.
    b. Use the “/multimon” switch on the mstsc.exe command line.
    c. Add “Use Multimon:i:1” to the RDP file.

  • HP Pavilion a6000 desktop with Vista black screen - need help please!

I have an HP Pavilion a6000 desktop with Vista.  Yesterday it was working fine and today we have the black screen that reads:
    Award BootBlock BIOS v1.0
Copyright (c) 2000, Award Software, Inc.
    BIOS ROM checksum error
    Detecting IDE ATAPI device...
Found CDROM, try to boot from it...Fail
    Detecting IDE ATAPI device...
    Detecting IDE ATAPI device...
    Detecting floppy drive A media...
    Drive A error.  System halt
I am not a techie, but looked at online forums and have tried f10 at startup with no change to the screen other than it stops after the first four lines and does not try the floppy drive.  I also pulled out the round battery, waited and then reintstalled.  Same problem.
Also, computer emits a single, repeating beep after startup.
    HELP!

    jjeahall
I saw your post and wanted to comment. I'm not an expert on these types of situations but did some digging around and found the following at Tips4PC.com.... read below
"There are two types of computer black screens that can appear in Windows. One where the computer will not boot up but you have a beep sequence sounding to let you know what the problem could be, and the other has nothing at all. No beeps, no cursor, no logo screen, and no choice to boot to safe mode or access the bios.
If your computer will not boot up and you get a beep sequence, I am not saying it is good news, however it is a step in the right direction towards solving this problem. This is a message from your computer that can be understood by looking up your bios (the brand) beep code. For example you may have an Award Bios, Ami Bios, Phoenix BIOS, Compaq, Dell, or Acer Bios. This list goes on and on.  You can search for Bios beep codes in Google. Here is an example of results in Google search"

Also  I went into the Troubleshooting Guide for the A6000  and found the following information.  You need to use F11 for recovery. See below
Starting System Recovery from system startup
    1
Turn off the computer. If necessary, press and hold the On button until the computer
    turns off.
    2
Remove the HP Personal Media Drive if your computer includes one. Disconnect all
peripheral devices from the computer except the monitor, the keyboard, and the
    mouse.
    3
Press the On button to turn on the computer.
    4
During the startup, do the following to enter the Recovery Manager program:
When the blue screen with the HP Invent logo appears, press the F11 key on the
keyboard. (You have only a few seconds to press the F11 key before the normal
    startup process continues.)
    5
The computer starts the Recovery Manager program; wait for the onscreen instructions
to display, and then follow those instructions.
    6
Complete the computer startup, finish the registration process, and wait until you see
the desktop. Then, turn off the computer, reconnect all peripheral devices, and turn on
    the computer.
    I am an HP employee.

  • Strange vertical lines in iPhone app icon

I've imported a standard non-transparent PNG into Xcode 3.2.3. The icon is displayed just fine in Photoshop, Finder and in Xcode's preview. However, when the icon is built into the app and displayed on both my iPod Touch and in the iPhone simulator, light black vertical lines have appeared, aligned with the left-most and right-most black pixels in my icon.
Here's a screen shot showing the buggy icon above and the correct icon below:

Has anyone seen this before? What can I do to fix it? I've used this same image with a white background and saw no problems.

Somehow, the problem was fixed (???).
Some additional info about this image:
    - Created in Photoshop CS3
    - Background color in question is #e6f2ff
    - Adjusting the hue of the color to 0 degrees (light red, #ffe6e6) yields a correct-looking icon
    - Adjusting the hue BACK to blue #e6f2ff yielded a correct image
    - The only different between today and yesterday was that I restarted my OS

  • Desktop HD icons

    I'm running a G3/350 with OS 9.2.2
Sometimes, without warning, the finder will crash and my HD icons will disappear from the desktop with a message that says "the disk is damaged".
    A reboot restores everything properly.
I have two HD's that mount on this computer, both have been formatted using a 3rd party utility called FWB HD Toolkit v4.01. Could this be a conflct with this software, a memory issue or bad RAM?

Could this be a problem with:
    FWB HD Toolkit 4.01
FWB Toolkit was a well-respected package. Unfortunately, they are out of business, have been for some time, and have no Web presence or support available. There is no evidence I know of that they had problems with software conflicts of any sort, or problems with data integrity in any version. That said, is there a compelling reason you are using an unsupported formatter?
a memory issue or bad RAM
There is always the possibility that a problem like this is caused by bad memory. But it is very difficult to pin down in most cases. The power-on self test is the first line of defense. Apple Hardware Test or third-party memory testing will improve confidence in your memory integrity. Memory tests do NOT produce false positives -- If it says the memory is bad once, believe it -- It will never get better.
You have left out another possibility -- Hard Drive Errors.
These may be caused by magnetic "drift" over time, or by very small head crashes, or for dozens of more obscure reasons. Data in some blocks becomes unreadable even with the drive's built-in error correction. These usually cause hangs or I/O errors, but not always
You have also left out the most likely culprit -- "Just because"
Directory corruption happens due the power failures, software errors, and other reasons that are not well understood. These are the problems Disk First Aid \[Which should properly be called "Directory First Aid"] are designed to Repair. Disk First Aid can easily Repair a non-boot drive, and later versions can repair the Boot drive, but may require a Restart afterward.
Apple utilities are very conservative in what they are willing to fix, and if you have problems that Disk First Aid will not repair, you may need a more "Industrial Strength repair utility such as Disk Warrior.
    A reboot restores everything properly.
You may have unresolved Directory Damage, and should run Disk First Aid after such an incident. It may also be useful to run a non-destructive Disk Test, using FWB Tools or Drive Setup. Lastly, If your drive died this afternoon, do you have current backups?
