Line spacing increased by superscript numbers for footnotes

in Indesign I am designing a book - at the end of most paragraphs there is a superscript footnote number. The last line of each paragraph has a larger space than the bodytext space or leading. It looks a bit odd - is there a way to  override this - I understand that it is creating the same space from the top of the superscript number to the bottom of the line above but it looks wrong. Can anyone help please?

1. Define in your paragraph style (you should only work with Paragraph Style) a fixed leading (instead of "Auto")
2. And/Or go to
Mac: InDesign > Preferences
Win: Edit > Preferences
In type activate "Apply Leading to Entire Paragraphs"
Redommendation: Set up you footnote numbers with Character Styles.

  • Superscript Numbers in Footnotes

    Our corporate style requires that the number of each footnote be superscript - not just in the body of the text but in the footnote itself. Is there a way to have InDesign make them automatically superscript? I can do it manually but I assume there's a way for the numbers to automatically be superscript.
    I'm using CS4 and am brand new with the program. I did search the forum but the only related responses didn't say how to apply it to the number within the footnote box, only the number in the body of the text.

    I was going to say it was fairly easy but actually turned out to be super-easy!
    I'll assume you have a dedicated Footnote paragraph style -- you wouldn't want your footnotes to look just like your text.
    In the definition of that paragraph style, call up the GREP Style panel.
    Click the button "New GREP Style"
    A new item appears in the GREP list; click the text [None] next to "Apply Style" -- it's actually a drop down list.
    If you already have a character style with just superscript, you can select it here; otherwise, first make one by choosing "New Character Style ..." at the bottom, name it "superscript", and only have it apply "Superscript".
    Click in the field next to "To Text" -- its default is "\d+", meaning the style would get applied to all numbers. Now usually you'd want numbers to be superscripted, but .. not all of them in the entire footnote! So you'd have to think of a way to 'only apply it to numbers that are at the start of the footnote' ... (which is, in fact, quite possible! And I'd be a happy Jongware to tell you how to pull off that particular trick -- but, I'm digressing. Sorry.) The 'super-easy' is because if you do try to use '\d+', all digits in footnotes will be superscripted except the footnote numbers themselves! So why the 'super-easy'? Footnote numbers have a unique code of their own, so InDesign can track them, and update when you insert or delete a note; the GREP code for these is "~F". So just delete the text that is in the "To Text" field and enter "~F" into it (mind you, without the quotes -- those are just to indicate here the text to insert is just "~F". Oh Lordy now I did it again. No Quotes Needed).
    ... and all that's left for Point #6 is to click OK to close the Paragraph definition.
    There you go: automagic superior footnote numbers.

  • How to make tiny numbers for footnotes in pages?

    I cant figure out how to make the number small in pages on my Ipad 2. The app is up to date and aswell is the software, iOS 5.1 but I can't figure out how to make the number tiny and move up to the left hand corn of the letter. Example, the number should like like the '2' in h2o but I don't know how, please help.

    Hi vnessar
    When you place the insertion point where you want your footnote referenced (tap, hold, release) and select Insert  > Footnote, it automatically places the superscript number for your footnote there and takes you to the bottom of the page in a Footnote field with the reference number already filled in.
    If you add another, (tap, hold, release - which brings up the "Select | Select All | Paste | Insert" menu) it will become Footnote 2 and so on.
    See Insert footnotes or endnotes
    In step 2. Tap >, tap Insert, and then tap Footnote.  The triangle is the "more button". Just ignore that and tap Insert and Footnote.
    Does that work for you?

  • How can I change the colour of the line in a chart in Numbers for Ipad?

    I have placed two line charts, one in top of the other, and I need one of the lines to be Red, I can't find a way to do it.
    thanks.

    Hi Jean-Michel,
    If you dig down a few levels from the top-level Polar Plot VI, you will find vi.lib\picture\polarplt.llb\Plot Polar Data.vi. Inside this VI is a VI called "Draw Multiple Lines.vi", which has a "pen" input. This input is currently not wired, so it defaults to a line style of "Solid", and a width of "1". If you take this input and propogate it all the way up to the top-level Polar Plot VI, you can now specify the line width and style of your polar plot.
    I have submitted this as a suggestion, so perhaps we will see it in a future version of LabVIEW.

  • Robohelp 10 output line spacing for numbered lists is off

    I wondered if you have had this situation occur with your output from Robohelp 10.
    I created my help system and CSS using Robohelp 10. My CSS contains a numbered list style and an alpha list style, both having line spacing of 3pt before and 3pt after. Looks great in Robohelp WYSIWYG, but the generated output (in IE and Chrome) looks bad. The numbered list line has way too much line spacing after (the next style is a non-numbered list style) and the alpha list has way too little line spacing.
    I tried playing around with changing the line spacing but it does not change the output!
    Thought I'd reach out to see if you have experienced this issue and the most expedient way to resolve.
    Here is an example of HTML tags in Robohelp:
    numbered list
    <?rh-list_start level="1" an="1" class="rl-p-1ListNumber" start="1" style="list-style: rh-list;
      list-style: rh-list;" ?><p class="1ListNumber">instruction text.</p><?rh-list_end ?>
    alpha list
    <?rh-list_start level="1" an="1" class="rl-p-Alpha" style="list-style: rh-list;
      list-style: rh-list;" ?><p class="Alpha">Instruction text.</p><?rh-list_end ?>

    When using large text my lines overpal, how can I increase the line spacing?

    Press 'Ctrl + Enter' after the numbered item to insert blank space below it. If you press 'Enter', the next line will start with the next number. As long as you want to type lines without a numbering, press 'Ctrl + Enter' and type the line.

  • Inexact Line Spacing for different fonts

    The line spacing performs correctly with, for example, an Arial font. But when choosing a PostScript font like The Sans I have to adjust the Line Spacing to ".01" or ".02" instead of "1" to have a "normal" spacing.
    This presents a problem when changing fonts or for selecting text, because I have to point the cursor one line down of the line I really need to select.
    Does anybody know a workaround? Thanks.

    Lists is a separate level of formatting from the paragraph style that you are trying to apply. Lists is applied over the paragraph style and controls the numbering systems and indents, it does not seem to extend to space before.
    You will need to create a paragraph style for the leading top level and another for the following indented points.
    You can however use:
    Inspector > Text > More > Following Paragraph Style:
    To set the indented points style to follow after you hit return on the top level style

  • In mail, is there a master setting for line spacing when replying?

    When replying to an email, the spacing is very compressed, the reply is only one line above the original message.  Is there a way to tell mail that for all replys, it should increase the line spacing between the reply and the original message?  Thanks.

    First thing to try is to reset your device. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously ignoring the red slider should one appear until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the device restart. See if that fixes your problem.

  • I have "upgraded" from Pages 2.0.2 to Pages 5.5.3 and can no longer customize my line spacing. Does anyone know if there are more than 4 options for line spacing?

    Is it possible to customize line spacing in Pages 5.5.3? My previous Pages 2.0.2 allowed me to choose spacing in 0.1 increments, but as far as I can tell Pages 5.5.3 only offers four options. Very limiting for creative documents.

  • Fix for extra line spacing in code on publish

    Hi Everyone
    Here is a fix for the issue where on publishing using Contribute (CS3 / CS4) extra line spacing is added into the HTML code on publish.  Everytime you publish using Contribute extra line spacing is added between the lines of coding destroying the formatting over time.
    (See attached PDF document for the complete how to step-by-step fix.)
    The issue lies in the line break type defined in Adobe Contribute settings.  Where the web server type, the website is hosted on Unix / Windows, is different from the line break type defined in Contribute's settings under...
    Users & Roles > Editing > Line break Type
    For example:
    <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd">
    <html>
    <head>
    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8">
    <title>Website Tile</title>
    <meta name="keywords" content="Keywords here" />
    <meta name="description" content="Description here" />
    On publish becomes:
    <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd">
    <html>
    <head>
    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8">
    <title>Website Tile</title>
    <meta name="keywords" content="Keywords here" />
    <meta name="description" content="Description here" />
    (dots are used just to space the text in the forum thread post, they represent blank lines between the lines of code)

    It sounds like you are carrying over a desktop setting that I dont think is editable in iPad pages. It is the before and after spacing around paragraphs. I have been using iPad versions for months now and cant think of the desktop wording in the inspector.
    Open back up in Dekstop pages and see if you can find that setting and reset it to a lower value, or delete the value and resend to iPad.

  • AutoSize not working properly in TextField when using non-zero line spacing

    When using non-zero line spacing, the autoSize property is not functioning as expected, causing text fields to scroll that shouldn't.  Also, when using device fonts, the sizes of the TextFields are wrong in the Flash IDE.
    I have a TextField whose height is supposed to be dynamic, depending the width of the TextField.  wordWrap is true, the text is left aligned, and the autoSize value is flash.text.TextFieldAutoSize.LEFT.
    When the TextField's width is adjusted, the height increases or decreases as expected, but when I scroll the mouse wheel over the TextField, it allows a single line to scroll out of view.  This should not be happening.  The autoSize property should ensure the TextField is large enough to neither require nor allow scrolling.
    Has anyone else encountered this issue or know how to fix it?
    Update: Been a problem since at least 2006! > http://blog.nthsense.net/?p=46
    http://www.kirupa.com/forum/showthread.php?288955-Disabling-textfield-scrolling   Bug is caused by using a line height ("line spacing" in Flash) larger than zero, for example 1.0pt.  It looks like when I reduce the line spacing of the text field to zero, the issue goes away.  There doesn't seem to be anything wrong with how autoSize is calculating the required height of the text (i.e. it is exactly textHeight + 4 pixel gutter, and drawing the rectangle (2,2,textWidth,textHeight) aligns visually with the text), so it must have to do with how the TextField is deciding whether it needs to scroll or not, and that separate calculation is being thrown off by the non-zero line spacing.  The additional non-zero spacing at the end of the last line could be making the TextField think it needs to scroll, even though it's hight is sufficient at "textHeight + 4".  Apparently the problem manifests when using a non-zero leading value as well.
    In fact, it has to be related to the leading value exactly, since the following code stops the textfield from scrolling.
    //body is TextField
    var tlm:TextLineMetrics = body.getLineMetrics(body.numLines - 1);
    trace(tlm.leading); //traces "1" here.  traces zero when line spacing is zero, and traces larger values with larger line spacing values
    body.autoSize = flash.text.TextFieldAutoSize.NONE; //turn off autosize so the height can be set manually
    body.height += tlm.leading; //increase height of textfield by leading value of last line to cause scrolling to be turned off.
    Honestly, this is pretty unacceptable bug.  First of all, scrolling should not be sensitive to trailing line spacing, because autoSize and textHeight do not include it. It need to be consistent, and I think textHeight and autoSize setting height = textHeight + 4 is correct.  Vertical scrolling should use textHeight as it's guage for whether scrolling is necessary, but instead, it's obviously involving the leading values of the last line.  At the very least, vertical scrolling should simply be disabled when autoSize is turned on and wordWrap is true, because the TextField should be big enough to fit all the text.  The workaround of manually adjusting the height is also no good, since turning autoSize back on will immediately change the size back and trigger scrolling again.  I also shouldn't have to set line spacing to zero just to use the autoSize feature, since the scrolling calculations are wrong in this way.

    No, lol.  Luckly, I replace most of my TextFields on the display list with my subclass TextFieldEx.  I just call a clone method that accepts a TextField and returns a TextFieldEx with identical properties.
    I corrected the problem via modifying the subclass to behave differently when autoSize is not NONE and wordWrap is true.  Under those conditions, the maxScrollV and scrollV property values are fixed at 1, and the class listens for its own SCROLL event and sets scrollV to 1 when it occurs.  That allows me to leave everything else alone, including text selection, and use whatever line spacing I want.
    The modification seems to work fine so far.
    For anyone interested in doing something similar, here is a clone method that will copy a TextField.
    public static function clone( t:TextField ):TextFieldEx
                                  var te:TextFieldEx = create( "", t.width, t.type, t.multiline, t.wordWrap, t.selectable, t.embedFonts, t.defaultTextFormat );

  • Uneven line spacing

    In the document I'm creating there are some paragraphs where the line spacing on the screen and printed page are uneven ... for example, the white space between line 2 and line 3 is wider than the space between any other lines in the same paragraph. Yet, for most paragraphs the line spacing looks fine. For this example, I'm using the font Minion, at 11.2 with a line spacing of 1.2. Any help / thoughts would be very appreciated. Thanks.

    Hullo Tom:
    I run into this too, sometimes, but it generally gets sorted when I apply a baseline adjustment to a whole page to balance up facing pages. So just a thought, no guarantees. Have you tried selecting your paragraph up to and including where the problem begins, then setting a value for baseline adjustment; and, if you don't want it, setting it back to zero again?
    Even were that to work for you, there is still something a bit unusual about the way Pages handles line spacing. Other users have asked for a fixed line spacing option, whereas the spacing in Pages seems to be set in reference to the total content of the font in use, and sometimes behaves a bit strangely. Of the options on offer, you might like to try whether choosing "between" or no choice at all from the scroll-down options in "multiple" under the line spacing slider in Text Inspector improves things for you. I think "at least" in these options is meant to avoid ascender / descender collisions with mid-line font changes or access to glyphs or superscript characters, and choosing that might exacerbate your problem. If you find it on, try switching it off.
    The baseline adjustment I've mentioned is in Text Inspector / More, in case you want to try it. Unfortunately this is an intermittent problem, and I haven't been able to duplicate an occurrence of it on demand to see if I can clarify it.
    But the option of a fixed line spacing would, if it were available. Pages' regard for everything that might happen in a font can sometimes be a nuisance when you're just entering standard body text, and if this little quirk of it bothers you, I strongly recommend that you "Provide Pages Feedback" under the Pages main menu to report to Apple that it does need fixing.
    Regards.
    PS: I've also tried this with your fractional font size (though I don't have Minion) but I don't think this is the cause of the problem: I've found it in 12pt Baskerville too.
