Line Speeds - New Install

Hi there,
I've got BT Infinity being installed on 2nd December, and there seems to be some conflicting information.  I was hoping for some clarification, when I put my postcode into the checker my house name came up and the old address which was 22a came up as well.
My estimated speed for my address using the house name was 24meg down and 4meg up, when I used the number it said 35 down and 10 up.
They won't cap my speed just because the house name has changed will they?  It must be an error as the two houses either side of me say 35/10.
I guess I'll find out when they install but just wanted to ask incase anyone else had a similar thing?
Thanks
Henry
Solved!
Go to Solution.

Post code checking is just a guestimate. The only accurate check is the telephone number check.
You will get the best available speed that your line can take.
You say the two houses either side of you show 35/10, so I would imagine you should be very similar, but that is not guaranteed as someone could have bad internal wiring/bad joints outside/next door could go to a different cabinet/exchange/line could be routed a different way.

  • Line Attenuation - New Install

    Hi there,
I had a new BT line installed last week into a new build house and BT Total Broadband Option 3 activated today. While checking out my connection details I noted the following information from the router:
    Downstream: 1 Mbps
    Upstream: 448 Kbps
    Modulation:G.992.1 Annex A
    Latency type:Fast
    Noise margin (Down/Up):3.2 dB / 12.0 dB
    Line attenuation (Down/Up):66.6 dB / 31.5 dB
    Output power (Down/Up):15.7 dBm / 12.5 dBm
    CRC Events (Down/Up):1087 / 33
    HEC Events (Down/Up):512 / 1
    Error Seconds (Local/Remote):682 / 34
The Line attenuation worried me the most as when placing the order with BT, they estimated I should be able to receive 13 Mbps, not the current 1 Mbps I have.
I understand that the BT line needs to "Sit" for 10 days, but surely the line attenuation isn't going to suddenly drop and give me the speed that was advertised?
The exchange is over 5km away, but has been enabled for FTTC and the nearest street cabinet is just around the corner from the house.
I'm wondering if the engineer connected the new line directly to the exchange rather than the street cabinet. (Unless I'm mistake on how they can connect a new line).
Can anything be done? I'm going to give tech support a ring tomorrow, but wanted to ask here in the meantime.
    Thanks for your patience.

    Thanks for the reply.
The checker came back with the following results:
"For Telephone Number 028******** on Exchange WARINGSTOWN
Your exchange is ADSL enabled, and our initial test on your line indicates that your line should be able to have an ADSL broadband service that provides a fixed line speed up to 512Kbps.
However, due to the length of your line, an engineer visit may be required, who will, where possible, supply the broadband service.
Our test also indicates that your line currently supports a fibre technology with an estimated WBC FTTC Broadband where consumers have received downstream line speed of 13.8Mbps and upstream line speed of 4.6Mbps."
So Fibre is available, so I'm confused why I seem to be only getting 1Mbps with such an awful Attenuation rate.
I'll e-mail the mods as suggested, is there anything I can do if I speak to BT today? (I really want to get this moving if another engineer is required as it took nearly 2 months notice to book one last time)
    Thanks

  • Problems with migration on a new install

I turned on my new 27" iMac, and when it asked if I wanted to import info, I was not ready because I did not have the right cable to connect my Time Machine External B/U, so I passed, and created a Bootcamp partition.
I installed Windows XP just fine, and then installed Parallels on the main admin account, and made sure it worked. then tried to import my prior user account by connecting both computers with an ethernet cable, and turned on file sharing. I had problems with lots of spinning beach ball of death on the old mac, so I figured moving to the new machine would get rid of it.
So I used Migration assistant to import from my current computer connected with Cat 5 cable, and it got 99% of the way through, then hung, like it could not gather the final info from the old computer to finish the migration, so I forced quit Migration on both computers, since there is no other way to exit w/o a successful install.
The account was there, though when I log in as that user, I see lots of folders I don't have permission to access like my documents and downloads.
So I go back to the old computer, and do an updated time machine back-up, then connect that external HD to the new iMac and do a 2nd import to a fresh user. All goes well, and I am able to log in, however, my new install of Parallels does not show up on the desktop, rather my old Parallels shows up with its different name. And I am getting spinning beach balls for 10-20 seconds in Safari, which I don't like, as something from the old computer must be corrupt to be doing this like a preference file or ?.
I have had a Mac since the early 1990's, and always only had one account that I used to run the computer, never creating a "User" account to run day to day, and I am not fully understanding the relationships between admin & user.
    So my questions are;
    1. what is the best way to take my documents, movies, photos, music and such from the 2nd migration, and transfer to a freshly created user account that would have no corrupted preferences causing the spinning problems. Do I put them in the shared folder, then access them from the new account, and transfer them that way, or does the admin do it?
    2. What do I do about the applications that were imported, can the main admin move them and possibly the above documents to the main applications folder?
    3. What about fonts and such, should they be put in the main library, or a user library?
    4. Where can I find info on the allowable actions & limits of admin and users? what they can & can't do.
    5. On my admin desktop, I can see my HD, Bootcamp partition, and Parallels shortcut. It is not visible on my test account, or another user account I created for #1 above. How can I give that user access?
    6. How can I access the new Parallels install that shows up on the admin hd, instead of the old imported one in my user account?
    7. How can I access the 2 external HD's that show up in admin and not users?
    8. Can I safely delete the user that was created from my first unsuccessful migration that I had to force quit and has permission issues?
Thanks for your help, really appreciate getting up to speed on users...

No offense, though none of your replies are of any help. I am not migrating from a PPC to Intel, I don't need to reinstall, I am not a new user migrating for the first time, and I am not having any font problems.
    Let me try again.
If I have a problem with an imported user account like it hangs doing certain things, how do I move all the data to a new user on the same PC, just drag all the documents, library, and similar folders to the shared folder, or the user folder?

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

  • How do perform a new install of iTunes on C drive, but locate the library on a second internal drive?

I realize this topic has been kind of beat to death, but I'm not finding exactly the information I'm searching for. There is a lot of information about splitting libraries, but I want to do a new install, and have my media located on a separate drive, with nothing but the software on the C drive.
I have a pretty massive music library (noting new or special about that), so an new install of iTunes is always a huge chore. Like many other users in posts I've read with similar questions, my C drive is SSD (also have another dedicated to something else entirely), and so I have purchased a standard spinning drive to handle my iTunes media, and externals for everything that isn't meant for iTunes. Basically, I need the library database to be located on my 'E' drive (let's say), and I will move most of my files manually. I just need iTunes to find them after doing so, and then I'll simply resync my iPhone to the new setup. I have a few reservations about that, but that is a different topic.Right now, I just need to get iTunes installed and have it recognize/find media on a separate drive. Also, I'm running Windows 7, 64-bit, in case that is relavant.
Sorry if there are a million thread with the same info, but all I was finding was how to split the library, and that's not at all what I want to achieve. Thanks in advance!

hello again Chris - I hope you're able to help, or someone as knowledgeable.
I've started another discussion because installing this newest version of iTunes has caused problems like I've never encountered.
    - I did a fresh install as I intended (new PC running Win 7 64-bit). Installation is smooth, and opens fine. Then I create the new library on "I" drive, iTunes then stalls when opening. I just tried this again, and it has been unresponsive for ~10 min, not fully open.
    - I see the new library just fine when I peek in the "I"drive.
    - In a previous attempt, I used an existing library file, iTunes still stalls, though it loaded the content. It just freezes when I enter the store. The content loaded fine. Still, couldn't access new material or materials I've purchased and won't download after installing and trying to access iTunes store.
-each time I try, I unstall every connected program to iTunes, even removing items from registry.
I'm seriously perplexed. I've been using iTunes since 2005 and have never had any kind of issue like this. this PC is a gaming rig. Top of the line components all the way. I even cancled overclock settings to make sure that wasn't the culprit. Still no joy. I had iTunes installed on this machine about 3 months back, but since "C" drive is SSD, I uninstalled until I recently purchased a standard HD specifically for media content. While writing this, it just brough up the tutorial. I click an option (iTunes in the Cloud) just to see if it moves ahead. It does nothing. I have to minimize the browser to access. Apple no longer offers support - they want me to pay to help with free software for which I've already spent loads of money on for content. This is absolutely insane. What has changed in the last few months to make this software behave this way? Previous versions HAVE worked on this machine. I simply couldn't contain the library on my drive. No help was offed on my other post. I'm desparate at this point. Please. Someone from the community or Apple help me. I've got literally several thousands of dollars of media that I cannot access on my PC. ****, the OS is lean and I barely have any software installed. This makes no sense at all. Sorry that I'm all over the place. I've been working for hours on a problem with BitCoin miners on another machine and combine with iTunes (which should be simple compared to the DIY component of mining hardware and software...which I'm actually able to solve!!!), and I'm fried and defeated. need sleep. Thanks in advance.

  • Verizon.net Email Speeds Do Not Match FIOS Line Speeds

In the past months since about September 2012, Verizon email servers are not moving data as fast as the line speeds customers are subscribing to.  Such as, Fios 15/5 mbps line speed package, using a browser and going to a speed test website, the results are equal to or better than 15/5.
Except for when Verizon.net customers use the Verizon.net email accounts which come with the internet package. Those speeds have degraded, especially when moving from the old email servers to the new ones (incoming.verizon.net to pop3.verizon.net).  The overall speed with their email, via browser or software (Outlook, Windows Live Mail, Outlook Express, Thunderbird etc.) has dropped to as little as 1.0 mbps when obtaining email, especially those which have some payload such as a 6 MB .pdf, .jpg., .tiff, .zip, .rar and so forth.
What's fowl about this is, Verizon.net support folks have no access to the email network so they are unable to communicate to those running the email servers that customers are unhappy with the service.  Mostly, those who are new to Verizon Fios just continue to use their Gmail or Live accounts which just happen to work satisfactorily, speeds in the area of the above example, 15/5 mbps.
What's really bad about this is, upgrade to the Quantum Fios packages and guess what?  Email speeds don’t move an inch faster.  This means, the email network/servers with Verizon.net are speed regulated outside of the customers line speed connection.  Too bad, customers pay extra for more speed yet, email with Verizon remains at the slow pace. I have much issue with this since in the past, this had never been an issue.  Now that Verizon has Fiber, it is? It would be nice if they published this alongside of the many features that come with a Fios ISP account however, it is nowhere to be seen.
This is obviously bait and switch service and features.

You don't go into the details as to why the account was suspended ... that background might be helpful since you're asking others for their opinion.  In general it sounds like the account was "deleted" at which point all mail is bounced because the address no longer exists -- but Verizon holds the name in reserve for some period of time to prevent someone from re-registering it in case an error was made and for some level of security, I suppose.
Anyhow ... on your commentary about not using an @verizon.net address as your primary address ... I think you will have this with many providers.  Hotmail, Yahoo, and Gmail all do this if you terminate the account (they do have a suspended account due to inactivity feature which operates differently, but pretty much do the same thing for deletions and such.   I don't use the @verizon.net account as my primary for a different reason however -- my primary address is provider agnostic.   I can move providers (although I'm quite happy with FiOS at the moment) -or- if at some point down the road I have to move out of Verizon territory, my email address will not need to change.  I used this little fact to my advantage when I moved from Comcast to Verizon a few years ago -- no one knew I changed providers because my email address didn't change.   Now .. I don't use one of the free services for email, I own my own domain name (about $10/year from the likes of GoDaddy) and have my domain hosted on the Google Apps tier (but even without that, GoDaddy will do basic forwarding for you of any email address to whatever mail account you're presently using).    Something to think about.

  • Outlook 2010 - Subject line of new e-mail changes to duplicate the subject of the e-mail below

I'm having the strangest issue with a new install of Outlook 2010. Sometimes when I receive a new e-mail, the from, subject, received, and size fields will duplicate the information from the e-mail below it. In other words, no matter what the sender, subject,
time, etc. actually is, it will display in the inbox the same as the e-mail below it. Once I open it, it will list correctly in the inbox, or I can click on another folder and return to the inbox to see it correctly displayed.
I do not have any kind of preview on, and the inbox only displays one line. There is no pattern to which e-mails this happens to.
    Any ideas?

Please run /cleanviews switch to check the result.
(Type "Outlook.exe /cleanviews in Windows search bar and press ENTER.)
Please also create a new Outlook profile to check if the issue still persists. Thanks.

  • Massive drop in line speed...

    Hi all,
I suffered a massive drop in Internet connection speed earlier this week which has so far not improved.
Although I have had ADSL since it's near earliest days and being close to my exchange I have never received a great performance but have become more or less satisfied with the 4\4.5mbps I receive from my Total Broadband Option3 package.
I did receive close to that speed prior to the 8mb upgrade a few years back and an upgrade to 20mbps doesn't promise me any better (availability checker for neighbours etc suggests that faster is available but who is to know?).
On Wednesday (9th February) my connection\synch speed dropped to about half it's usual speed and is now in the region of 240kb rather than the near 500kb I usually receive. I would like to comment that I know my line can achieve better than this as I got download speeds of nearer 600kb for a month or so around October last year.
I power-cycled the router and after the diagnostics had completed etc and the line synch process had  completed the speed of the line had dropped again slightly.
Not to sound arrogant but I know all the usual troubleshooting having been through it all before on several occasions each time finding out the issue is with the exchange and so having had no means to affect the problem.
The situation is the same this time in that categorically nothing has changed inside my home nor with my equipment and so I am confident that the problem is external to me, especially considering the massive drop in speed.
I did get a response from a BT forum moderator from a post I placed on another site but the advise I got back was generic at best and didn't suggest anything besides mounting a BT iPlate. that advice was no good for two reasons which are that as nothing in my home has changed fitting an iPlate won't make a 2+mbps connection increase (back to what it was) and that I already have an 'ADSL v1.0' labelled master socket that already contains all the tech that the iPlate does. Having replied to their email stating that I already have the afore mentioned v1.0 master socket I haven't had any response.
    So... to explain further...
    here are some diagnostic stats for the past couple of days taken from my router (Draytek Vigor 2820n) - sorry the font is small bu tI wanted to keep the layout of the text when I completed the post;

The BT Speed Tester web-site reports my line speed as 2mbps when it was previously 4.5mbps and so as to check actual download speed independently I ran a comparison speed test via SpeedTest.Net which reported much the same result (down\up speed relative to what you would expect for a 2mbps line - Link to SpeedTest.Net results: http://www.speedtest.net/result/711802566.png ).
As you can see from the diagnostic data, the SNR is high and so it does seem to suggest that there is fault on the line. prior to the fault, the SNR was around 6db rather than the 15\16db reported now.
I know it has little factual baring on this incident's potential problems but my last broadband speed issue was caused by water having gotten into the top of the telephone pole at the end of my street which was temporarily fixed by a BT engineer but I don't know whether that was ever permanently fixed?
During that occasion I did suffer very slight noise on my telephone line which I must say isn't the case this time but I thought I would request a line test once again in any case. That unfortunately hasn't helped as the online system tells me 'telephone number not found' and so I can't proceed with the test.
Can anyone offer any advice or is any BT person willing to take on the issue and see it to resolution for me please?
Even trying my own diagnostics trying to speed things along by obtaining a line test hasn't been possible.
I do appreciate that there is a support system in place but that has failed me on this occasion and so I have no faith in going throught the telephone support for BT Broadband when I know that nothing I can affect is at fault.
I can of course provide my account details, email address etc. to anyone BT techie that can assist and I am happy to run any further diagnostics that might me appropriate under the circumstances.
Thanks in advance for any advice and\or furtherance anyone can make towards resolving my issue.
    Regards,
    Dizzy
PS> if my speed increases beyond 4.5mbps I won't be upset!

5 days into the problem and nothing much has improved. My line speed has now sync'ed into the realms of 2.5mbps so I am at least seeing circa 300kb download speeds (but that's still at least 50% less that I had).
At the end of this post are the latest batch of diag results for anyone who wants to check them over. The only details that seem to change are the 'Cur SNR Margin' and as a result he downstream actual\attainable rate(s).
It just simply seems that something has screwed-up the line and now I'm going throught the tedious increase period to get back to where I was. As increases always take longer that decreases it could be some time before things get back to normal (if they are on a slow increase that it!).
The Kitz Site has some good information related to BRAS profile increases\decreases and depending on how small the increases (if any) are coming my way it could take a very long time to get back to 4.5mbps or thereabouts.
At current rates if increases continue it could be at least 15 days (at 1/2 mbps per 5 days) making it some 20 days total to get back to where I was. All because of a fault that lasted a a fraction of a second.
It is worth mentioning that I did have a similar long period to wait for my line sync speed to increase as a result of the water having gotten into the top of the telephone pole some time ago, which I mentioned in an earlier post, but at that time the drop wasn't too big and so a few days saw the previous performance restored.
For the benefit of others that may read this post, I've explained in my email message to Stephanie that, I have checked with neighbours for any changes they may have made electrically, which they say they haven't, and confirmed that my modem is connected directly to the master socket, and that the master socket is an NTE5 socket so I don't need an iPlate.
I also mentioned that I have ferrite RF chokes on the extension lines and the router<->ADSL line (supplied with the router itself) to cut RF interference that may be picked up by the system.
On a related note, it was commented in another thread that RF chokes can cause problems with ADSL comms but that is not true (I've done a heap of research on the subject). That being said, they can actually have no effect at all if not installed correctly which is why the snap-on-cable type is best because you simply can't get it wrong.
Anyhow, here are the stats and I hope things continue to improve, even if it does take 20 days!

  • Is there going to be new install media soon?

Seems like they're releasing one every month now?  I'm going to reinstall soon and I'm just wondering if a new install disc is coming soon I would wait.

Woops should have checked the download page.
    http://www.archlinux.org/download/
Is this one final? Karol said there were some last minute issues. Anything I need to watch out for? I may just give it a go tonight if this ISO is good.
EDIT: I know I could just pacman -Syu but at the moment I don't even have Arch installed on my computer.  I dual boot Windows 7 and Linux.  A couple months back I decided to try out Xubuntu but ended up not using it too much.  Main reason for wanted to switch back to Arch is for Pacman.  Apt just kind of frustrates me and lacks the simplicity and the "it just works" feeling of Pacman.  For example, for whatever reason when doing a simple check for updates it returns like 20 or 30 lines downloading all these different files just to CHECK if there's updates.  With Pacman, it just downloads "core", "extra", "community", then it's done.  So much simpler and faster.

  • [SOLVED] iptables - New install, existing conf

I copied my /etc/iptables/iptables.rules to my new install but the rules arn't being read.
    [root@host ~]# iptables -nvL
Chain INPUT (policy ACCEPT 76 packets, 5793 bytes)
pkts bytes target prot opt in out source destination
Chain FORWARD (policy ACCEPT 0 packets, 0 bytes)

First few lines of my rules file...

I've rebooted a few times since and restarted the iptables service but still no joy.  Any ideas?

Well not sure if you meant to, but the loaded rules are technically identical to your rules file. You forgot to change:
    :INPUT ACCEPT [0:0]
    to
    :INPUT DROP [0:0]
Could just be that netfilter is being smart and leaves out "extra" rules.

  • New Install Win 2000 Server ORA-12560 : TNS : Protocol Adapter Error

I am trying to learn Oracle.
I get the following when logging into SQL*Plus.
    ORA-12560 : TNS : Protocol Adapter Error
I have just installed New Install Win 2000 Server and then Oracle 8i for Win2k
    null

Step 1 - from a command line on the database machine, enter 'lsnrctl status' and report the output
Step 2 - display the contents of the %ORACLE_HOME%\network\admin\tnsnames.ora file on the machine running sqlplus.
These are the first two stepo, whether on the database machine or in a traditional client-server configuration.

  • Can't log in to wifi on my new install

I connect to a hidden WiFi network, and I was able to do this successfully on the Arch live USB with netctl, by creating a netctl profile and uncommenting the line about a hidden network. Yet in my new install, I can't connect to WiFi. Trying `netctl start myprofile` gives: "Job for [email protected] failed." and refers me to `journalctl -xn`. When I type that command, I see the error "Failed to bring the network up for profile `myprofile`. What could be going wrong, and how can I fix it?
I made sure to install the `iw` and `wpa_supplicant` packages while chrooted into my new install.

Do you have wpa_supplicant installed? You should carefully compare the installed packages list between on you live version and local version. Then find the missing package and boot from live-usb version and using chroot to install it.

  • New install, Deskjet K8600

Trying to install - goes to 96% and fails.  I believe there is something wrong with the carriage and that 96% is the configuration part.  I cannot get the printheads to move to the center (someone else installed the printheads and ink cartridges).  When trying to print, I get the same page everytime.  a very fine blue vertical line, a thicker pinkish vertical line and three letter N's, all same pinkish color.  I am trying to return it to the vendor for replacement, although the box has been thrown out.  Any suggestions?  Thank you.  Jonilyn

Possibly I should not be using the domain for the second one?? "Select authenticating domains for this configuration"??
Please uninstall the SSI and MC and run version 3.5.154. The 3.5.144 version had an AD sync bug.

  • For a complete new install, do I have to install Leopard 1st, then Snow?

Ok, now Snow is out, I want to reinstall from scratch, do I have to install leopard 1st (my iMac came with it pre installed and have disks) or can I just use the Snow Leopard DVD to install from scratch
I have backed up what I want , ie iTunes, videos, docs, and want to do a brand new install from scratch.
    cheers

Ok, so I can just do a complete fresh install of Snow, I'm not bothered about archive or anything, just a fresh copy of Snow, as if it came pre-installed from Apple factory.
I dont have a Time Machine backup yet, as I all I need for backup is iTunes Library, Videos, photos, everything else I'm not bothered about. So I take it can just manually copy these to my iMac after fresh install of Snow?
Also another question....I have a Intel iMac, bought Xmas 2007, spec wise It:
    Model Identifier: iMac7,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
    L2 Cache: 4 MB
    Memory: 2 GB
    Bus Speed: 800 MHz
Do you think Snow will speed up my system, as now its a "bit old". It was the lowest spec when I bought it in the range (added another 1Gb RAM) but it was my 1st Mac ever, and all I could afford
    cheers

  • ADSL2+ Broadband Line Speed

I have just renewed my 12 month home BT Total Broadband contract again (contract started Monday 14th March), and have always been very pleased with the reliability and quality of my (up to 8Mbps) actual download speed of around 4 to 5Mbps.
This time I was told I would have an (up to 20Mbps) actual download speed of around 14Mbps, which I verified using the BT Wholesale Broadband Availability Checker (ADSL2+ broadband line speed of 14Mbps, typically the line speed would range between 8Mbps and 18.5Mbps).
However, my line is now still yielding around 5Mbps, but I am aware of the 10 day, MSR, IP Profile BRAS, DLM, etc issues.    The bt.com speedtester has just yielded the following Test 1 results:
Download speed achieved during the test was 5281Kbps.
For your connection, acceptable range of speeds is 2000 - 7150 Kbps.
DSL Connection Rates of 7275Kbps Downstream and 888 Kbps Upstream
IP Profile for your line is 5500 Kbps
My point is : Surely the above Test 1acceptable range of speeds of 2000 - 7150Kbps, should now  be xxxx - 14000Kbps or higher, as ADSL2+ has a maximum speed of 20000Kbps and my line will support the 14000Kbps ?

New upgrade ADSL2+ service started 14th March 2011.

This article from the Internet helped me to get my brain (what's left of it) round this problem. I hope it helps others too.
During the first ten days after the Broadband service has been provided, the line's performance is monitored, and the lowest connection speed is noted. This figure is used from then on to define minimum service standards below which the service can be considered to have a fault. Both during this period and afterwards, a system known as Dynamic Line Management (DLM) constantly assesses the performance of the line in order to provide information to the end user's DSL Modem/Router to allow it to choose a suitable sync rate, with which to connect to the Telephone Exchange Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer (DSLAM), balancing speed against the risk of errors due to changing noise conditions. DLM can make adjustments to the DSLAM output power, suggested target signal-to-noise-ratio, and sync rate, and can choose to apply a technique known as interleaving, which aids error correction. Several factors dictate the sync rate, which limits the maximum attainable line speed, such as the presence of noise within the frequency spectrum used by ASDSL, but mainly it is the distance from the Telephone Exchange to the Subsriber, which has the largest influence on the line' performance.
    Questions.
Why are my Broadband Internet speeds now slower than the old Dial-Up service ?
Why is my Download Speed now lower than my Upload Speed ?
Why have my Down / Up Noise Margins doubled overnight ?
Why is the DLM system now assessing my line as so bad, after years of quality 5000 Kbps Broadband Speed ?
Why does the achievable speed top at 7150 Kbps, when ADSL2+ works up to 20000 Kbps, 14000 Kbps on my line ?
